There it was.
The final whistle.
Gotham has won the 2023 NWSL championship.
Ali won the championship in the last game of her career.
You run onto the field from the bench as quickly as you can. After the 86th minute, you were subbed out of the game, walking away with many goal-stoppers and leaving you very pleased with your performance. While on the bench, you couldn’t tear your eyes away from the tattooed captain who also happens to be your girlfriend.
So given the fact you were so focused on the girl, you run straight to her, flying into her arms for her to catch you. The team along with all the staff gather around the both of you, jumping up and down while chanting.
She sets you back onto the ground and places multiple kisses on your cheek before pulling back and whispering, “We won.”
“We did.”
The two of you pull away with love-struck looks on your faces until Kelley hops high with her hands on both of your shoulders, making you laugh at the energetic girl.
“We are the champions, my friends!” Kelley begins to sing as Lynn and Kristie wrap their arms around her shoulders and join in.
“And we’ll keep on fighting till the end!”
The trio looked at you and the captain with awaiting eyes. You and Ali look at each other before turning back and waving your hands in the air while singing, “We are the champions!”
Everything else goes by in a blur, the medals, the trophy ceremony, and now you’re in the locker room with goggles and beer, dancing to the thump of the music. Bodies hit against each other as everyone has a good time. You notice Kristie calling you over while saying something about her being live. She points the camera towards your face as you cheer while holding your beer up in the sky, watching the comments flow in rapidly.
Ali comes over and a bunch of players pour beer down her mouth, making it all spill down her neck and shirt. Once Kristie walks away, Ali grabs your wrist and pulls you into a corner of the room.
“Bottoms up and chin up.” She places her pointer finger under your chin, forcing your head up as she hovers the bottle of alcohol over your mouth. You open your mouth in compliance, allowing her to pour the liquid down your throat. “Good girl.” She purrs while wiping the remaining beer on your chin off.
You blush profusely at the praise but try to ignore it due to the cameras all around the room and your teammates. The captain just smirks and walks off into the crowd, knowing exactly the effect she has on you, so you take a few deep breaths, calming yourself down, and walk over to Kelley.
“We actually won! Fuck yeah!” The defender yells, picking you up which makes you laugh even harder.
Soon everyone becomes a little too tipsy and is told to gather their stuff up. Everyone heads to the bus but you and Ali, insisting that you both are capable of driving since you only had a bit of alcohol which is true.
You’re gathering up all your clothes from your cubby and shoving them into your bag before strong tattooed arms wrap around your torso. Kisses begin to trail from the base of your neck to the underside of your jaw right below your ear.
“Well hello, captain.”
“Don’t say that, you know what it does to me.” She groans, making you feel her warm breath against your skin. You turn around and wrap your arms around her neck, trailing your eyes down from her messy bun all the way down to her veiny hands.
“Why don’t you show me, captain?” You say, biting your lip in anticipation. The taller girl’s pupils widen as her eyes shift to a more lustful tone.
“I think we both have to take a much needed shower, don’t you, baby?”
Once you nod your head, Ali is quick to pull you away into one of the cubicle showers. Both of your hands grab at each other’s clothing, trying to rip everything off as fast as you can, both needy from the slight teasing.
You’re both finally completely bare as the taller girl reaches over and turns on the shower. Hot water hits against your skin, but you’re pushed against the wall by your hips and caged in by the taller girl’s arms. She looks down at you with a grin as water runs down her shoulder onto both of your chests.
“You looked so sexy with that medal around your neck, captain.” You tease her once again with the nickname, causing her to lean down and smash her lips against yours.
“You’re going to look so hot when you’re moaning my name in a second, darling.”
She attaches her lips back onto yours, sliding her tongue in your mouth not wasting any time. Pulling away, she tugs your lip between her teeth and lets it go with a gentle pop. Her kisses start to train down your neck and onto your stomach. She swirls her tongue over your breasts, showing each the same attention before moving even further down to your belly button, leaving her kneeling on the wet floor.
Your breath picks up, but you tap her shoulder to get her attention which she notices and looks up at you. “I want you up here with me.” You admit shyly with a slight blush washing over your face, making the girl on the ground stand up with a smitten look on her face, knowing she’s already so in love with you.
“How about we do this?” Before you’re allowed to ask what she means, she wraps one arm around your waist and lifts you up, causing you to let out a shriek and wrap your legs tightly around her hips.
“I thought your back was breaking, and that’s why you can’t play another year.”
“Suddenly I’m all healed.” You press your lips back onto hers with a smile remaining on both of your faces but is soon gone when the kiss gets sloppier and hotter.
Her free hand runs down your stomach and grazes over your slit but stops when she notices your breath shutter, wanting you to wait and beg for it. She keeps doing it while kissing you until you pull away with a needy whine.
“Please, Ali! I need you so bad.”
She begins to gather up your wetness with her fingers, making you think she’s going to give you what you need, but instead, she rubs torturously slow circles around your clit. Although it’s something, it’s not nearly enough to get you off and it’s not what you want at the moment.
“I need your fingers! Please, captain.” You whine desperately, having been worked up all day.
Too busy in your own haze, you don’t notice the expression on the tattooed girl’s face change to something more desirable. “If you be a good girl for me you’ll get my fingers. Can you do that, sweets?”
You simply nodded your head, knowing that even if she didn’t ask, you would do anything she asked. If you ever become bratty, she punishes you until you’re crying for a release and that’s something you don’t want right now.
Two of her digits finally trail down to your dripping hole and push into you. You let out a small moan at the feeling of being filled and latch your lips back onto hers. Her tongue dances around yours as her fingers start to pump in and out of you at a steady pace, making you moan against the kiss at random times.
The position is semi-awkward for Ali, but it doesn’t stop her from pleasuring you. Seeing your chest bounce up and down, your lips opening while making a bunch of hot noises, your eyes squeezing shut, and your legs gripping tighter around her waist. She felt so lucky when you said yes to being her girlfriend. Now all of this is only for her to witness, and the best part is it’s her doing this to you.
“You’re so wet, baby. You’ve been thinking about this for a while, haven’t you?” Her raspy voice catches your attention. All you can do is nod because of the amount of pleasure you’re feeling with her fingers pounding into you and her palm hitting against your clit.
“Yes, yes I’ve been desperate for you all day.” You pant into her shoulder while your arms hug around her neck, squeezing every time she hits a spot that leaves you melting.
She notices when you let out a particularly loud moan and your arms flex, tightening around her. She finds the spot that makes you go feral and starts to pound harder and faster into you, causing a string of noises to leave your mouth as your body tenses. She feels your walls squeeze around her fingers and notices you getting close, but she doesn’t say anything and continues her thrusts.
The coil in your stomach finally snaps as the muscles in your body that were once tense now loosen. Her digits keep pumping you through your orgasm until your hand reaches down and stops her movements, becoming sensitive after your intense finish.
“You did so well,” Ali whispers, connecting her lips to yours in a gentle kiss, letting you breathe and come back down to earth. She notices you shiver, so she wraps her arms around you and pulls you into her towering figure.
“I’m cold.” You mumble weakly against her arm, making the older girl laugh at the obvious admission and the first words that have come out of you in a while.
“Let’s run you under the water and get you warmed up.” She rubs her hands up and down your arms, guiding you under the water and wrapping her arms around your waist. She places sweet kisses against your jaw and over to your ear before tugging on it with her teeth whispering, “Then I have to punish you for cumming without my permission.”
You simply look back at her with a slightly fearful expression. And here you thought being a champion and a good girl would help you out.

Swim Tryouts at 7:30- Danielle Van De Donk
Danielle Van De Donk X USWNT Player! Lyon Player! Reader
Synopsis: When Daan has football at 7:00 and swimming practice at 7:30, while at the world cup.
851 words
Being a US player that plays outside of the US is rare, like extremely rare, but being the only one to have never played in the NWSL, now that's rare.
I was born in the USA, raised in Memphis Tennessee, but when I was 14, I moved away to Germany as that's my father's home country. When I spent the next three years before I started off my career in the German Women's top League.
I've played for four leagues, now, starting off my career in the German League with Bayern Munich in 2017 for just one season. Getting to play with the greats over there, learning so much from Frido, Sara Dabritz, Jill Roord, Leupolz, and Leah Galton.
Before I signed with Arsenal in 2018, for the next three seasons, until 2021. Where we won the WSL title once, in my first season.
Which was where I met Daan, I fell in love to say the least. But she was already in love, with Beth Mead, so I watched on from the side lines, like I was waiting to be subbed on now.
But she was my best friend, it was her, me, Viv and Jill when she finally came and joined us. The Dutchies and the American.
But they were my family.
And then I moved to play for Barcelona for just one season after they won the Champions League in 2021 til 2022. Before I moved, and I got the chance to be with the girl I was in love with.
Daan.
So I joined in 2022, which was where we reconnected, and to say we both fell in love was the truth. We've been dating now for 10 months, and we do hide it, but we don't at the same time.
We're private people but not a secret.
So facing here now in the group stages of the Women's World Cup, it was hard.
But with less than 3 minutes to go of extra time was on the clock, and I turned back after the whistle was blown.
I just saw an orange shirt on the floor. "Who is it?" I asked Lindsay, my Lyon teammate, as I couldn't read from that far away. Well that and I'm dyslexic and can barely read myself.
"Daan." She muttered before I ran over to my girlfriend. I couldn't hide all of this, I was scared, my girlfriend is on the floor not bloody well moving.
"Schatje." I told Daan standing by her as she was led on the floor not moving, crouching by her as I had my hand on her shoulder.
"Poepie." Daan muttered back to me.
"Not that name." I told her with a smile, that was one good sign she could still understand me and knew who we were around her.
When the Dutch medics made their way over to Daan you saw the first showings of blood slowly coming out of her hair, but you had no idea how much there would be under there.
I wasn't given a choice but to move away from her as the Dutch staff moved me out of their way, pushing me back away from my girlfriend.
"No, stay!" Daan told me as she locked eyes with me, trying to reach her hands out to grasp onto me.
"I'm right here." I told her as I kept eyes with her.
I watched as they placed some gauze over her wound, before just placing a swimming cap over it.
I laughed at her.
"Not a word!" Daan told me, pointing that finger at me, wagging it at my face.
"You look like you've got swimming practice in half an hour." I told her with a smile.
"Oh shut up." Daan told me as she stood up.
"Make me!" I told her walking away from her backwards as she was escorted of the pitch before she could return to play.
~~
"Are you two doing okay, it looked rough on the pitch?" The interviewer switched to English seeing me walk up to Daan, and I stood a bit behind my small gal.
"The best players are always the most competitive." I told the interviewer as I interrupted Daan's interview.
"Best friends?" The interviewer asked us both, as my arm was around Daan's shoulders but Daan's was holding onto my waist.
"The best." Daan answered like clockwork for us, squeezing my waist twice, doing our code, for when we wish we could say our feelings.
"Go get that checked out properly." I told Daan raising one eyebrow up at her, as she nodded, looking deep into my eyes.
"I will, ik houd van je." Daan told me, trying to politely kick me out of the interview.
"Ik houd van je." I told her back quickly kissing her before walking off to Lindsay who was gasping at my actions, before I froze.
"You didn't mean to do that?" Daan asked me.
"No I didn't!" I said shaking my head, before running back to kiss Daan one last time before running away back to Lindsay as we were both bright red in the face now.

redirection XII

summary: this moment brings up some insecurities
you sit in your shared hotel room with esmee in lisbon, the night before one of the biggest matches of the season.
the champions league group stage has all led to this—the final match against benfica, where every pass, every tackle, every chance could mean the difference between staying at the top of the table or not.
jona announced the lineup earlier after the last training session, and you were named a starter.
it’s an honor, but the weight of it all has been pressing down on your shoulders since you heard your name called.
you’re trying to relax, but your thoughts are racing a mile a minute, and your fingers fidget constantly—tugging on the hem of your shirt, tracing the stitching on the comforter, twisting the bracelet on your wrist that esmee gave you a few weeks back.
you’ve been in plenty of big matches before, but the nerves tonight feel different. heavier.
this is your first season at barcelona, and you don’t want to disappoint your teammates. its confirmed that jona will be going off to your old club back in the nwsl after this season, but you want the next coach to be reassured that you are a reliable player.
the door opens, and esmee walks in the shared room, holding two smoothies from the café just across the street. she’s wearing a smile, but it dims slightly when she sees you curled up on the edge of the bed, your shoulders tense, eyes staring blankly ahead.
“hey,” she says softly, crossing the room to you. “strawberry for you, mango for me.”
she hands you the smoothie, and you take it with a small smile, but you don’t sip it right away. you know esmee’s watching you closely, the way she always does when she can sense something’s up.
you avoid meeting her eyes, knowing they’ll be full of questions, and instead stare down at the bright pink drink in your hands.
she plops down beside you, sitting so close that her knee brushes against yours, and the warmth of her presence is comforting, grounding. “okay,” she says slowly, drawing out the word.
“what’s going on?”
you shake your head quickly, forcing a laugh that sounds more like a huff. “nothing. just... thinking about tomorrow. it’s no big deal.”
but it is a big deal. and you know esmee sees right through you. she sets her own smoothie down on the nightstand and turns her whole body to face you, one knee bent on the bed, so she’s fully in your line of sight.
“y/n,” she says, her voice gentle but firm. “talk to me. what’s really going on? you’ve been quiet ever since the lineup got posted.”
you bite your lip, staring down at your fingers as you fiddle with the straw of your smoothie.
“it’s... i just don’t want to mess up, okay?” you finally admit, your voice small.
“starting in this game... it feels huge, more different than the past ones. i know i’ve started before, but this is different. everything matters now. and i don’t want to be the reason we don’t win.”
she’s silent for a moment, and then you feel her hand slide over yours, squeezing tightly.
“you’re an amazing player, y/n. you’ve proven that time and time again, and tomorrow’s just another chance to do it. jona wouldn’t have put you in the starting lineup if he didn’t trust you.” esmee says, her voice full of conviction.
you glance up at her, your nerves softening slightly at her words. “what if i... what if i’m not enough?” you ask, the doubt in your voice barely hidden.
“i know i’m good, but sometimes i feel like... like maybe i’m not good enough for a match like this.” you say.
esmee’s eyes soften, and she reaches up to tuck a stray strand of hair behind your ear, her thumb brushing against your cheek.
“you’re one of the hardest workers on this team. you’ve got heart. we have got ten other players out there with you, don’t worry.”
you close your eyes for a moment, letting her words wash over you, and then you lean into her, resting your head against her shoulder. “thanks, es,” you murmur.
“always,” she replies, pressing a kiss to your temple. “and you know, when i come on, i’m gonna be there to pick up any slack if you need it.” she pauses, and then adds with a playful grin, “but i won’t need to.”
you laugh softly, the sound coming more naturally this time, and finally take a sip of your smoothie. the sweetness of the strawberry fills your mouth, and you let out a sigh, feeling a little bit of the tension melt away.
“okay. tomorrow, we win. no fear.”
“that’s my girl,” esmee says, wrapping her arm around your shoulders and pulling you into a warm, comforting hug as you both settle in bed together.
the next day, you can’t help but feel the nerves bubbling up again as you lace up your boots in the locker room, the chatter of your teammates surrounding you. the tension is palpable—this is the final champions league group stage match, and every single player knows what’s at stake. but you’re ready, even if your stomach feels like a knot.
you look around at your teammates, exchanging nods, high-fives, and encouragement. aitana, caroline, alexia—they’re all calm, focused. it helps you find a sliver of calm too.
when you step out onto the pitch, the crowd’s energy is electric. you can hear the roar of the away barça fans in the stands, and it’s like a wave, crashing into you and filling you with adrenaline.
as you take your position on the left wing, you glance back over your shoulder, catching esmee’s eye on the sideline. she gives you a small nod and a smile.
you nod back, and then the whistle blows.
the first half is a blur of intensity. both teams are battling hard for control, and every time the ball comes your way, you push yourself to be faster, sharper. you weave through defenders, play quick passes to mariona and caroline, and make runs into the box, always looking for that opening.
you’re playing well, but it’s tight—benfica’s defense is strong, and it’s hard to find space to work in.
early in the second half, its 2-1. in the 50th minute, caroline gets the ball just outside the box, dancing around benfica’s defenders with that incredible close control she has.
you see the space open up on the left, and you make your run, calling for the ball. she sees you, and it all happens in an instant—a perfect through pass, cutting between two defenders. you take one touch to settle it, and with a quick glance up, you spot caroline making a darting run into the box.
you whip a low, driven cross, right into her path, and she meets it cleanly, sending the ball flying into the net.
“yes!” you shout, running over to her as the stadium erupts.
caroline grabs you in a tight hug, and you can feel her joy radiating through her light laughter.
the team surrounds you both, high-fives and cheers all around, and for a moment, you let yourself bask in the feeling.
there’s still a lot of game left to play, and as you take your position again, you know you have to stay focused. you’ve got to give it everything.
five minutes later, you’re battling in midfield, trying to push barça forward on a counterattack. one of benfica’s defenders is on you, and it’s a dribbling duel—her trying to get the ball, you keeping it just out of reach.
you shift your body left, then right, trying to shake her off, but she’s quick. and then, just as you’re about to make a break for it, another benfica players’ foot comes in hard, swiping underneath you and catching your ankle.
the pain is immediate and sharp. it shoots through your leg like fire, and you’re down before you even realize it, clutching your ankle as you grit your teeth against the sting.
you turn your head to see that kika, someone you know about, was the one who swiped your ankle. now laying outside of the midfield on benfica’s side, your clenching your teeth trying to ease the pain.
“y/n!” aitana’s voice is there first, and suddenly she’s at your side, her hands on your back as she leans over you, eyes wide with concern.
“where does it hurt?” she asks, urgency lacing her tone.
“ankle,” you hiss out, your fingers digging into the grass as you try to breathe through the pain.
“shit,” aitana mutters, looking up quickly to wave over the medics.
on the sideline, you can hear jona barking instructions to warm up a sub, and you know it’s esmee being told to get ready. you hate this—you hate the idea of having to come off, of leaving your team when they need you.
“i’m sorry, i didn’t mean to,” kika says, suddenly kneeling beside you, her face pale with worry.
“i wasn’t trying to hurt you, y/n.”
“it’s okay,” you manage to get out, though your voice shakes from the pain. “really, it’s okay.” you give her a weak wave, trying to show there are no hard feelings.
patri’s not having it. “what were you thinking?” she snaps at kika, her voice rising in anger. “that was reckless—”
“patri, chill,” aitana interrupts firmly, shooting her a look. “it’s football. let the medics do their job.”
the medics help you to your feet, and every step sends another wave of pain through your ankle. they support you as you limp off the pitch, the sound of the crowd’s applause ringing in your ears.
you try to look back at esmee one last time before she goes on, and the look in her eyes is fierce. she’s worried about you, you can see it, but she’s determined too, more focused on the game. you’re okay with that.
in the medic room, your ankle is tightly wrapped and propped up on a chair, ice pressed against the swollen joint. outside, you can hear the roar of the crowd, the muffled sounds of the match still going on without you.
it’s agonizing, not being out there. the medics have told you to rest, but all you can do is stare at the screen in the corner of the room, watching as your team battles on. and then you see it—the final whistle, and the scoreline flashing on the screen: 4-4.
it’s a tie, and you can’t help but feel the sting of disappointment. you start replaying everything in your head—the moment you went down, the way you couldn’t keep fighting for those final 35 minutes.
you feel like maybe you could’ve been the difference. maybe you could’ve found that extra pass, that one moment to break through benfica’s defense and get the win.
the door creaks open, and you don’t even look up until you hear esmee’s voice. “hey,” she says softly, coming over to you, followed closely by ingrid and alexia.
“how’re you feeling?”
“like i let everyone down,” you admit, staring down at your wrapped ankle.
“we tied. maybe if i’d stayed on, we could’ve... i don’t know.”
“y/n, don’t,” alexia says firmly, stepping closer. “you were amazing out there. you gave us an assist. you played hard, and none of this is on you. the tie isn’t your fault.”
ingrid nods, her expression sympathetic as she stands beside esmee and in front of alexia.
“ale is right. you did everything you could. and you’ll be back out there soon enough, stronger than ever.”
you sigh, the weight of their words sitting heavy on your chest.
“i need to go to the doctor back in barcelona to figure out how long i’ll be out,” you say quietly, hating how small your voice sounds. “and now i need crutches to even walk until then.”
“we’ll figure it out,” esmee says, her voice gentle but steady. “and hey—whatever you need, i’m right here.”
she helps you stand up carefully, and ingrid grabs your crutches, handing them to you with a reassuring smile. the three of them hover around you like protective walls as you make your way out of the room, and alexia leans down to press a kiss to the top of your head before you step out into the hallway.
“you did great, y/n,” she whispers. “never forget that.”
unfortunately, you forgot.
you’ve never really talked about your underlying problem with anyone when it comes to injuries—not even esmee. the summer before this moment, the moment that took some of your confidence away.
back then, you’d been waiting for that world cup roster announcement for weeks, hoping, praying that your name would be there. when the roster was posted, your heart sank. you weren’t on it. no explanation. no reason. just... nothing.
it felt like the ground was pulled out from under you. all you could do was sit there, staring at the roster, wondering what you’d done wrong.
now, sitting in the hotel room in lisbon, with your ankle wrapped and elevated on the bed after the match against benfica, it feels like those old insecurities are creeping back up again.
you’re silent, lost in thought, until esmee speaks up from beside you, her voice soft but curious.
“you’ve been quiet for a while. what’s going on?” she asks, leaning over, her elbow resting on the pillow as she looks at you with concern in her eyes.
you hesitate for a second, not sure how to even begin to explain what’s been weighing on your mind. but you know she’ll keep pressing until you tell her. she always knows when something’s wrong.
“it’s just... you ever wonder if you’re not good enough?” you finally mutter, your fingers picking at the edge of the blanket, fidgeting the way they always do when you’re anxious.
esmee raises her eyebrow slightly, her head tilting as she tries to understand where this is coming from. “not good enough? for what? barça?”
you shake your head slowly, feeling the words catch in your throat before they finally come out.
“the world cup... last year, when i wasn’t selected. i thought i was ready, you know? i’d been cleared for months—eight months. i felt strong, i was finally back after my acl injury. but... they didn’t pick me. and i always wonder what i did wrong.”
esmee sits back, her eyes scanning your face, trying to piece together what you’re saying.
“you think they didn’t pick you because of your injury?”
“i don’t know,” you murmur, voice barely above a whisper. “i mean, maybe? but i was cleared way before the tournament. i thought i was good enough to be back in the mix, but... clearly, they didn’t think so.”
there’s a beat of silence before esmee speaks again, her voice gentle, but there’s a sharp edge of determination in it.
“y/n, you had just come back. maybe it wasn’t about you not being good enough. maybe it was about them thinking you needed more time, more recovery.”
you shake your head again, the insecurity still gnawing at your chest.
“i don’t know, es. eight months should’ve been enough. i’d been playing again. it wasn’t my injury holding me back—it was just me. maybe i wasn’t good enough after i came back. i’m scared that this ankle injury is going to bring back those familiar moments”
the words hang in the air between you, heavy and raw. you’ve never admitted that out loud, not even to yourself. but it’s always been there, lingering in the back of your mind.
that nagging voice telling you that maybe you’re not cut out for this. maybe your acl injury– and now this ankle injury–changed you in ways you can’t fix.
esmee shifts closer, her hand reaching for yours, fingers lacing through yours with a firm, grounding grip.
“y/n, stop. you’re more than good enough. and you’re not just good—you’re incredible. everyone on this team sees it.”
“right now it doesn’t feel like it,” you confess, your voice barely steady. “that’s why i push myself so hard. i don’t want to let anyone down. i’m scared that if i don’t push myself to my absolute limit, i won’t be good enough for barça. like... maybe they’ll see the same thing the national team did.”
“that’s not true,” esmee says firmly, her hand squeezing yours tightly. “you’re a vital part of this team. you make everyone around you better.”
you look down at your lap, feeling the familiar sting of doubt, but esmee’s voice pulls you back up.
“you know what alexia said the other day about you?” esmee asks, her tone softening as she leans in a little closer. “she said you’re one of the hardest-working players she’s ever seen. she said your work rate and your mindset—those things are what make you so valuable. not just your talent.”
you blink, surprised by that, but esmee’s not done.
“and aitana? she said you’re one of the best wingers she’s ever played with. she told jona that when you’re on the left, she feels more confident in her positioning because she trusts you to always be where you need to be.”
you swallow hard, your chest tightening as the weight of esmee’s words sinks in.
you never knew aitana thought that. you’ve always looked up to her, admired the way she brings intelligence on the pitch, but hearing that she trusts you so deeply... it’s overwhelming.
“and ingrid,” esmee continues, her voice a little lighter now, like she’s trying to ease the tension building inside you.
“she said that you’ve got the best vision on the team. said you see plays before they happen, like you’re always one step ahead.”
you can’t help but feel a small smile tug at your lips at that. ingrid’s always been one of the sweetest players you’ve known, so hearing her say something like that about you... it feels like a weight has been lifted off your shoulders, even if just a little.
“see y/n,” esmee says, her voice soft but steady.
you close your eyes for a moment, letting her words sink in, feeling the warmth of her presence beside you. when you open them again, you meet her gaze, and for the first time in a long while, you feel a little lighter.
“thanks, es,” you whisper, your voice catching in your throat.
“anytime,” she replies, a smile tugging at her lips as she leans in, pressing a soft kiss to your cheek. “and remember, you’re not doing this injury thing alone anymore. i’ve got your back. always.”
as she pulls you into a hug, you bury your face in her shoulder, letting yourself breathe for a moment.
and maybe, just maybe, that’s enough.

I just know Gotham FC game nights are dramatic as fuck
Image IDs below the cut
Image 1: A photograph of midfielder and emergency goalkeeper Nealy Martin sitting at a chess board with a Gotham FC assistant coach. Behind them, prominently displayed, is a sign with the Gotham FC logo naming them 2023 NWSL champions. Nealy is wearing her gold medal and champion T-shirt as she sits cross-legged in front of the chess board.
Image 2: A screenshot of my own tumblr post made in April of 2023, reading: "Kristen Edmonds makes her teammates and the assistant coach play chess with her so they learn how to anticipate people's moves" underneath is my commentary, where I say it is the best thing any [soccer] commentator has said
Image 3: A screenshot of Jason Anderson's tweet from 11/11/23, at 11:53 PM. It reads: Purce on Martin: "She's such a special character, she's a light on our team, and she brings some things no one else can. I *don't* think she's funny. But she thinks she's funny, and I do love being around her." He has included the NWSL championship hashtag.
Image 4: A screenshot of Steph Yang's tweet, reading: Whenever Midge Purce does her Ultimate Midge Purce thing I hear her voice in my head talking about beating her friends at board games going "they don't have strategic minds" and she has included the NWSL championship hashtag.

The Question
This one is short, but I loved writing it. I really want to say sorry because I meant to have it posted this morning and I would have but I ran into car trouble this morning after I had breakfast so I ran out of time to finish editing this before I went to class. I’m planning on posting two more times today. However, it may not be until very late tonight.
prompt: I have a prompt Christen asks r to marry her after Utah wins the championship.
warnings: None
words: 697
(Y/N) POV
I cheered as I caught Christen as she jumped into my arms. We had just beaten North Carolina in the finals to win our first NWSL Championship. I hugged Christen tightly because there was no one I would rather win the championship with than my girlfriend. It didn’t surprise me when Christen kissed me.
“Way to beat homophobia,” I said causing Christen to shake her head at me.
Nothing could put us down right now. We had taken down the number one team in the NWSL to win. We had all put on the 2019 NWSL Champions shirts before North Carolina had accepted their 2nd place medals. We then accepted our first place medals.
I was proud when they announced that Christen had won the Championship MVP. We were all jumping when we got to lift the trophy up. It seemed like everything was going great tonight.
We all stayed on the field a little longer as we continued to celebrate and I knew that the celebrations would continue on our way to Utah and even when we got back to Utah. I was a little surprised when Christen started to drag me into the locker room before either of us went to see any of the fans.
“Are you not going to see the fans?” I asked causing Christen to look back at me. “I was going to.”
“I am, I just need to do something first,” Christen assured. I was a little surprised to see pictures from our relationship sitting out. “I recruited Tobin to help me which she recruited Sonnet, Lindsey, and AD, obviously.”
I furrowed my brow in confusion as I looked at the pictures. Most of them came from our dates but some came from when we got to play together. There was even one of our kiss after we won the World Cup from this summer. I smiled at the memories that these pictures held for Christen and me.
“I was going to do this in France,” Christen started out as I turned to her. “It was going to be a spur of the moment thing in France, but Tobin convinced me that I should wait and plan it out. I wasn’t going to, but she pointed out to me that if we won the World Cup you would be too drunk to remember in the morning.”
“What’s keeping me from getting too drunk to remember any of this tomorrow?” I teased.
Christen smiled and laughed at that. She shook her head because nothing had changed in the way we celebrated since we left college. Christen pulled me toward the middle of the room before kneeling on one knee. I froze because I didn’t think Christen would do this.
“(Y/N), I have loved you since we first met at Stanford. I remember you showed up late that first day of class and the only spot that was left opened was by me. You know, I did not want you to sit by me because you were sweaty and gross, but I am so happy that you did. You opened your mouth and immediately apologized because you had been out on the field practicing. I think your love for our sport is what drew me to you,” Christen said. She took a deep breath before. “I used to think it was the most ironic thing ever because we were chemistry partners and we had chemistry. Now look us, 12 years later and I’m proposing. So, (Y/N) (Y/L/N), will you marry me?”
“Yes,” I nodded. Christen grinned as she immediately jumped up. Christen wrapped her arms around me before spinning me around. I laughed at her. When Christen stopped, I let her put the ring on my finger before I kissed her. “I love you.”
“I love you, too.”
The clapping from the doorway caused me to jump as I looked toward the clapping. I was a little surprised to find all of our national teammates there along with our Utah teammates. If I was going to get engaged to the woman that I loved, I wanted to be surrounded by the people that had become my second family.

Turn of Events (Tobin Heath x Reader)
Summary: Reader has a difficult start to camp, but then befriends Tobin and things change for her.
You kept your head down as you walked into the meeting room. You were late and you knew it. Your alarm had gone off late, you’d almost missed breakfast, and then you had to rush to get to the meeting. Not to mention that you’d gotten lost in the hotel. Everybody else had stayed at this hotel before apparently, but you hadn’t. Your first camp with the USWNT wasn’t going nearly as well as you had hoped it would so far.
“Y/n,” Christen called you over. She pointed at the seat in between herself and Tobin and you sat down there. “Get lost?”
“Yeah,” you said. The meeting commenced and you got your practice schedules before being dismissed. There was a lot expected in this camp, especially from you. The coaching staff was still on the fence about your abilities and you understood why. You weren’t coming from a big university team, but you’d made waves playing for your college team.
“The van is leaving at 11, don’t be late,” Alex told you in the elevator. You nodded and went up to your room to get ready for practice. You were in the lobby at 10 exactly and waited for the van outside. You sat outside alone for a long while until Tobin came outside with a ball. She started juggling it before kicking it over to you. You stood up and did a couple of juggling tricks before kicking it over to her. The two of you kept that going back and forth until the first van arrived. You went to get on that one, but Tobin stopped you.
“Wait for the last one. It’ll be the one that Alex, Christen, Allie and I get on,” Tobin said and you nodded. “You know, you’ve got skill rookie.”
“Thanks, but I’ve got a long way to go until everybody else starts thinking that,” you said and Tobin frowned at you. She put her arm around your shoulders and pulled you close to her.
"Do you like burgers?” Tobin asked and you nodded. “Alright, I’ll buy you the best burger in Portland if after this camp you start getting calls from professional teams.”
“And if I don’t?” you asked and Tobin thought on it for a moment.
“I’ll personally make sure that after the next camp, if you aren’t drafted yet, you do,” Tobin promised and you nodded. It was a win-win situation for you, you either got a confidence boost and a burger or you got trained by one of the best soccer players in the world. Tobin grabbed your bag from off of the ground and walked inside with it. You followed her closely and that set the tone for the rest of your camp.
Wherever Tobin was, you were like a shadow. She didn’t seem to mind though, she encouraged it. The two of you would spend a lot of time in her room and you started to get to know some of the veterans. Christen was the sweetest person you’d ever met, Kelley was insane, Allie was an interesting character to say the least, and Alex was very intimidating. You fell in with that group pretty easily and whatever hero crush you had entered the camp on Tobin with, became a different kind of crush, a more intense one.
“She really likes you,” Alex said, sitting down next to you at breakfast. The only people in the room were you, Alex, Carli, Alyssa, and Becky, but the last three were sitting at a table on the other side of the room. “I haven’t seen her like somebody so much so quickly in a long time. Don’t break her heart.”
“Um, what?” You were confused and Alex seemed annoyed that you hadn’t caught on yet.
“Tobin. Heath. Likes. You.” Alex made a point with each word. You started laughing, which drew some attention from the others in the room, but you stopped when you realized she was serious. “I don’t think it’s funny.”
“How did that even happen? She’s, well, her, and I’m just me,” you said and Alex sighed. “She’s a two time world champion and I probably won’t even get drafted.”
“Whenever Tobin takes you out for that burger, kiss her. Don’t hold back because if you, she will too,” Alex told you. She moved over a couple of seats as Christen and Allie walked down for breakfast. Christen sat next to you and Allie sat next to Alex.
“Ready for the game tonight?” Christen asked and you nodded. You were getting your first start in the midfield. You were standing behind Tobin, who was playing as a winger up top and beside Lindsey. “Score a good goal tonight, do something to show them who you are.”
“Yeah, okay,” you said and Christen patted your head. You stayed down at breakfast until Tobin got there and then you hung out with her until it was time to leave for the game. You hadn’t really ridden on the bus yet, so you didn’t know where to sit. Luckily, Tobin had that figured out for you.
“Bus buddy,” Tobin said, pulling you into the seat next to her. “Christen and Kelley are sitting together. Getting that Stanford connection going.”
“Oh, okay,” you said and Tobin put her arm around your shoulders. You rested your head on her shoulder and looked out the window, occasionally sneaking glances at her. It would have been so easy to just kiss her then and there, but you didn’t. Your nerves didn’t get any calmer the closer the game got to starting. You watched Tobin jump the line by herself and wondered if you could find somebody to start a game-day tradition with.
Once the whistle blew, you shut your mind off and let your body act. You were where you needed to be, whether that be acting as a defender, running the ball, or crossing it to Tobin for what would be the first goal of the game, you were doing it. Tobin immediately bypassed everybody and ran to you, jumping into your arms and holding you tightly against her. The rest of the first half was very slow, the two teams just passing and trying to keep possession.
“Wow, that was great!” Tobin yelled, jumping on your shoulders as you walked to the bench to get some water. “You’re amazing, those tackles, that assist, the passing. You’re on fire tonight, all you need now is a goal or two and you’re gonna go as a #1 pick if somebody doesn’t sign you first.”
“Whatever you say Tobin,” you said, not believing her. She frowned at you, but then her attention was taken by what the coach was saying. Once halftime was over, you went back onto the field and the game started again. This time, you were playing a bit more forward than before. The other team had worn themselves out trying to keep pace with the USWNT and you were taking full advantage of that. You followed Christen into the box and she passed it to you. You shot the ball and suddenly felt bodies piling on top of you. You opened your eyes to see the keeper fishing the ball out of the back of the net.
“Top corner, impressive,” Christen told you and you blushed. Taking praise wasn’t necessarily something you were good at. Tobin pulled you into a hug and kissed your cheek before letting you go. You played the rest of the game with a new vigor, making sure the opposing team’s chances didn’t turn into anything. Around the 88th minute, you got a corner and Tobin played in a perfect cross to you that was headed in as a goal. You ran straight to Tobin and she picked you up in a hug. She set you down and before you knew it, the whistle was blown, ending the game.
“Good game,” Tobin said, putting her arm around your waist. You turned your head and looked down at her. She surprised you by kissing you as the two of you began to walk off of the field. You almost tripped and fell on your face, but luckily she caught you. “Expect a call from Portland at the very least. You’d be a good edition to the team.”
“We’ll have to see how I look in that jersey won’t we?” you asked and Tobin nodded. The two of you walked back to the locker room together and then got ready to go eat dinner with the team. You took a detour at the hotel so people could get nicer clothes and Tobin had you wear a Thorns shirt to dinner. “You’ll never get this back.”
“When you come play at Portland I will,” Tobin said, holding onto your hand. The next morning, you had emails and phone calls from teams, both in the NWSL and out of it. You ended up answering Portland first, agreeing to meet about a contract. Six and a half weeks of negotiations later and you were packing your things to go to Portland. The first text you received after news of you joining the Thorns was Tobin asking you if you were ready for your complimentary tour of the city.

You may have luck with those seats, but try to keep an eye on the thorns twitter on game day. Half the passes go to season ticket holders & they give out the other half the day of via twitter - usually something along the lines of "tweet us a photo of you in your match gear for a chance to win a pass!" I've never tried for one, so idk how competitive it is, though, but it's always worth a shot. Also, the riveters are super nice and may have a pass to give you if you ask on twitter.
ahh ok! i’ll def keep an eye out on the thorns twitter.. although i dont have thorns merch lol but i plan on going to the store to pick something up. ideally would love the harry tee but i dont think i’ll be there in time lol. and i’ll reach out on twitter somehow lmao. thanks so much anon you are a life saver

Sulley Muntari walks out of Serie A match after being yellow carded for reporting racist abuse
The Ghanaian midfielder didn’t get much support from anyone.
Ghanaian international Sulley Muntari was subjected to racist abuse during a Serie A match on Sunday, and he couldn't find support from anyone. He was yellow carded for dissent for asking the referee to do something about it, then didn't exactly get wholehearted support from his coach afterwards.
The incident happened during a match between Pescara — Muntari's team — and Cagliari. After being booked, Muntari opted to walk off the pitch before the match ended.
“[The referee] told me I should not talk to the crowd. I asked him if had heard the insults," Muntari said. "I insisted that he must have the courage to stop the game. The referee should not just stay on the field and blow the whistle, he must do everything. He should be aware of these things and set an example. I am not a victim. But if you stop the matches I am convinced that these things won’t happen any more.”
After Muntari was shown a yellow card, he walked off the pitch and handed his shirt to the young fan who was hurling the racist insults, saying he "needed to set an example so he grows up to be nice."
Muntari's manager, Zdenek Zeman, wasn't exactly supportive of the way his player handled the situation. “Muntari has abandoned the pitch because of racist chants but we should not take justice into our own hands," he said, though he added that Italy needs "a change of mentality" when it comes to dealing with racism in soccer.
Someday, an incident like this might inspire authorities to make serious changes in Italy. But the current president of the Italian FA is a vocal racist, so it's unlikely to be this one.
