Nvidia highlights AI software and services at D.C. AI Summit

A3 Ultra VMs provide non-blocking 3.2 Tbps of GPU-to-GPU traffic using RDMA over Converged Ethernet (RoCE) when paired with our datacenter-wide 4-way rail-aligned network.
In contrast to A3 Mega, A3 Ultra provides:
With the support of Google’s Jupiter data center network and Google Cloud’s Titanium ML network adapter, double the GPU-to-GPU networking bandwidth
With almost twice the memory capacity and 1.4 times the memory bandwidth, LLM inferencing performance can increase by up to 2 times.
Capacity to expand to tens of thousands of GPUs in a dense cluster with performance optimization for heavy workloads in HPC and AI.

This may be difficult and time-consuming. For this reason, Google Cloud is introducing Hypercompute Cluster, which simplifies the provisioning of workloads and infrastructure as well as the continuous operations of AI supercomputers with tens of thousands of accelerators.
Fundamentally, Hypercompute Cluster integrates the most advanced AI infrastructure technologies from Google Cloud, enabling you to install and operate several accelerators as a single, seamless unit. You can run your most demanding AI and HPC workloads with confidence thanks to Hypercompute Cluster’s exceptional performance and resilience, which includes features like targeted workload placement, dense resource co-location with ultra-low latency networking, and sophisticated maintenance controls to reduce workload disruptions.
For dependable and repeatable deployments, you can use pre-configured and validated templates to build up a Hypercompute Cluster with just one API call. This include containerized software with orchestration (e.g., GKE, Slurm), framework and reference implementations (e.g., JAX, PyTorch, MaxText), and well-known open models like Gemma2 and Llama3. As part of the AI Hypercomputer architecture, each pre-configured template is available and has been verified for effectiveness and performance, allowing you to concentrate on business innovation.
A3 Ultra VMs will be the first Hypercompute Cluster to be made available next month.

Google Cloud is also awaiting the developments made possible by NVIDIA GB200 NVL72 GPUs, and we’ll be providing more information about this fascinating improvement soon. Here is a preview of the racks Google constructing in the meantime to deliver the NVIDIA Blackwell platform’s performance advantages to Google Cloud’s cutting-edge, environmentally friendly data centers in the early months of next year.
Redefining CPU efficiency and performance with Google Axion Processors
CPUs are a cost-effective solution for a variety of general-purpose workloads, and they are frequently utilized in combination with AI workloads to produce complicated applications, even if TPUs and GPUs are superior at specialized jobs. Google Axion Processors, its first specially made Arm-based CPUs for the data center, at Google Cloud Next ’24. Customers using Google Cloud may now benefit from C4A virtual machines, the first Axion-based VM series, which offer up to 10% better price-performance compared to the newest Arm-based instances offered by other top cloud providers.
Additionally, compared to comparable current-generation x86-based instances, C4A offers up to 60% more energy efficiency and up to 65% better price performance for general-purpose workloads such as media processing, AI inferencing applications, web and app servers, containerized microservices, open-source databases, in-memory caches, and data analytics engines.
Titanium and Jupiter Network: Making AI possible at the speed of light
Titanium, the offload technology system that supports Google’s infrastructure, has been improved to accommodate workloads related to artificial intelligence. Titanium provides greater compute and memory resources for your applications by lowering the host’s processing overhead through a combination of on-host and off-host offloads. Furthermore, although Titanium’s fundamental features can be applied to AI infrastructure, the accelerator-to-accelerator performance needs of AI workloads are distinct.
Google has released a new Titanium ML network adapter to address these demands, which incorporates and expands upon NVIDIA ConnectX-7 NICs to provide further support for virtualization, traffic encryption, and VPCs. The system offers best-in-class security and infrastructure management along with non-blocking 3.2 Tbps of GPU-to-GPU traffic across RoCE when combined with its data center’s 4-way rail-aligned network.
Google’s Jupiter optical circuit switching network fabric and its updated data center network significantly expand Titanium’s capabilities. With native 400 Gb/s link rates and a total bisection bandwidth of 13.1 Pb/s (a practical bandwidth metric that reflects how one half of the network can connect to the other), Jupiter could handle a video conversation for every person on Earth at the same time. In order to meet the increasing demands of AI computation, this enormous scale is essential.
Hyperdisk ML is widely accessible
For computing resources to continue to be effectively utilized, system-level performance maximized, and economical, high-performance storage is essential. Google launched its AI-powered block storage solution, Hyperdisk ML, in April 2024. Now widely accessible, it adds dedicated storage for AI and HPC workloads to the networking and computing advancements.
Hyperdisk ML efficiently speeds up data load times. It drives up to 11.9x faster model load time for inference workloads and up to 4.3x quicker training time for training workloads.
With 1.2 TB/s of aggregate throughput per volume, you may attach 2500 instances to the same volume. This is more than 100 times more than what big block storage competitors are giving.
Reduced accelerator idle time and increased cost efficiency are the results of shorter data load times.
Multi-zone volumes are now automatically created for your data by GKE. In addition to quicker model loading with Hyperdisk ML, this enables you to run across zones for more computing flexibility (such as lowering Spot preemption).

Mukesh Ambani had a fireside chat with Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang in Mumbai on Thursday. The two prominent leaders shared the stage at Jio World Centre during the three-day Nvidia AI Summit India, where they talked about advancements in artificial intelligence and India’s expanding tech landscape.
The highlight of their discussion came at the very start, when Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani credited his wife, Nita Ambani, as the mastermind behind the Jio World Centre.
Nita Ambani’s Guidance to Mukesh Ambani
After Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang welcomed Mukesh Ambani, praising him as an “industry pioneer” who played a crucial role in India’s digital transformation, he remarked, “No one has contributed more, Mukesh, to make India a high-tech and deep-tech nation. You’re just beginning this journey with grand ambitions. What drives you to believe that artificial intelligence is India’s moment?”
Mukesh Ambani, 67, responded by thanking Huang for being in Mumbai and, more specifically, at the Jio World Centre, which he humorously noted was built by his wife.
“We’re here at the Jio World Center, which is new, and it was built by my wife. So, if I don’t mention that, I’ve been instructed to,” Ambani said, sparking laughter from the Nvidia CEO.

More details of Sam Altman’s sudden ousting as CEO of OpenAI have emerged, with several senior researchers quitting the company, and executives and investors from across the industry expressing shock and confusion at what is increasingly being perceived as a board coup.
Hours after Sam Altman was booted from the company by its board, Greg Brockman, another OpenAI cofounder and the company’s chairman, quit in protest. Brockman later posted details of Altman’s removal suggesting that the company’s chief scientist, Ilya Sutskever, had orchestrated the effort to remove the CEO.
Brockman’s post claimed that Altman was told he was being fired by Sutskever, the company’s chief scientist and a member of its board. Several accounts from inside the company suggest that a disagreement between Sutskever and Altman centered around the company’s direction, and specifically its ability to build more capable AI technology safely.
“This was the board doing its duty to the mission of the nonprofit, which is to make sure that OpenAI builds AGI that benefits all of humanity,” Sutskever told employees at an emergency all-hands on Friday afternoon, according to a report in The Information.
Jakub Pachocki, a lead research on OpenAI’s groundbreaking language model GPT-4; Aleksander Madry, a professor at MIT recruited by Altman to work on AI safety; and Szymon Sidor, a researcher who has worked on a branch of AI known as reinforcement learning, all reportedly quit as the crisis deepened.
The fallout from Sam Alman’s firing as CEO of OpenAI has shaken the tech industry, and threatens to turn into a backlash against the remaining board.
Executives at Microsoft, which has invested a reported $13 billion in OpenAI, were said to be “blindsided” by news of Altman’s exit, and Microsoft’s CEO, Satya Nadella, was furious, Bloomberg reports.
OpenAI declined to provide further comment on the situation. Neither Altman, Brockman, nor Sutskever responded to requests for comment. Inquiries sent to the three researchers who quit also went unanswered.
Altman had led OpenAI on an incredible run of success starting with the launch of ChatGPT less than a year ago. He quickly became a figurehead for the generative AI boom, and he was courted by world leaders keen to learn about the remarkable potential—and the potential dangers—of more advanced AI.
Earlier this month, Altman hosted OpenAI’s first developer conference and announced a plan to create an app store for AI agents built on top of its technology. Altman was also courting Middle East sovereign wealth funding for the development of AI chips that would compete with Nvidia’s, according to Bloomberg. The Information has previously reported that Altman was exploring the possibility of developing AI-oriented hardware in collaboration with the ex-Apple designer Jony Ive with funding from Softbank.
Disagreements over the issue of prioritizing safe development of AI previously led several prominent OpenAI researchers to leave the company and found competitor Anthropic.
The development of OpenAI’s most powerful large language model, GPT-4, has sparked unprecedented debate around the potential for AI to advance beyond human control. In July, Sutskever became the colead of a “superalignment group” at OpenAI, dedicated to producing “technical breakthroughs to steer and control AI systems much smarter than us.”
Speaking at the APEC CEO summit in San Francisco last week, Altman indicated that the company had been making progress on developing a more powerful successor to GPT-4. “Four times now in the history of OpenAI—the most recent time was just in the last couple of weeks—I’ve gotten to be in the room when we push the veil of ignorance back and the frontier of discovery forward,” he said.
Many within the tech industry have spoken out to support Altman, or criticize OpenAI’s board for its actions.
“What happened at OpenAI today is a board coup that we have not seen the likes of since 1985 when the then-Apple board pushed out Steve Jobs,” Angel investor Ron Conway wrote on X. “It is shocking; it is irresponsible; and it does not do right by Sam & Greg or all the builders in OpenAI.”
“Sam Altman is a hero of mine,” Eric Schmidt, the ex-CEO of Google posted. “He built a company from nothing to $90 Billion in value, and changed our collective world forever. I can’t wait to see what he does next.”
OpenAI announced that Altman would be replaced by Mira Murati, previously OpenAI’s CTO, who is serving as temporary CEO while the company searches for a permanent replacement.
Some employees at OpenAI seemed to suggest that Murati had been serving as de facto leader of the company for some time.
“In the craziness of ChatGPT forming, @miramurati was the one making final decisions in daily standups” Evan Morikawa, an engineering manager at OpenAI, wrote on X. “She’s been leading this company for years and will continue to do an amazing job here.”
Altman, who has little financial stake in OpenAI, took to X in the hours following his ousting to suggest that he might reveal more about the circumstances of his departure. “If I start going off, the OpenAI board should go after me for the full value of my shares,” he wrote.

AI-savvy PM Modi wows NVIDIA CEO, Jensen Huang
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s understanding of technology has captivated major tech leaders, including NVIDIA’s renowned CEO, Jensen Huang.
Huang expressed that Modi’s vision for a digital India and his familiarity with emerging technologies like AI have positioned the country prominently on the global tech stage. He highlighted how government initiatives such as Digital India, Startup India, and Make in India have significantly contributed to the advancement of India’s tech landscape.
At Friday’s NVIDIA AI Summit in Mumbai, Huang recalled his first meeting with Prime Minister Modi six years prior, expressing surprise when Modi asked him to address his Cabinet on artificial intelligence.
“It was truly the first time any government leader, any national leader, asked me to address his Cabinet on this specific topic. This was long before artificial intelligence was on anyone’s radar,” Huang noted.
This encounter was not the first instance of Modi leaving Huang impressed.

NVIDIA NVLink Revolutionizing GPU-Accelerated Computing
For GPU and CPU processors in accelerated systems, NVLink is a high-speed link that drives data and computations to useful outcomes. Once limited to high-performance computers in government research facilities, accelerated computing has become widely available.
AI supercomputers are being used by banks, automakers, factories, hospitals, merchants, and others to handle the increasing amounts of data that they must process and comprehend.
These strong, effective systems are computing superhighways. On their lightning-fast trip to actionable answers, they transport calculations and data via parallel routes.

What is NVLink?

The bandwidth of PCIe Gen 5, the link found in traditional x86 servers, is more than seven times that amount. Additionally, because NVLink uses just 1.3 picojoules per bit for data transfers, it has five times the energy efficiency of PCIe Gen 5.

When NVLink first connected the GPUs and CPUs in two of the most potent supercomputers in the world, Summit and Sierra, in 2018, it gained significant attention in the field of high performance computing.
Installed in Oak Ridge and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories, the systems are advancing science in areas like drug development and catastrophe forecasting, among others.
Bandwidth Doubles, Then Grows Again
The third-generation NVLink, which came with a dozen interconnects in each NVIDIA A100 Tensor Core GPU, increased the maximum capacity per GPU to 600GB/s in 2020.
AI supercomputers in cloud computing services, business data centers, and HPC laboratories worldwide are powered by the A100.
One NVIDIA H100 Tensor Core GPU now contains eighteen fourth-generation NVLink interconnects. Additionally, the technology has assumed a new, strategic function that will allow for the world’s most sophisticated CPUs and accelerators.
A Chip-to-Chip Link
A board-level connection called NVIDIA NVLink-C2C is used to combine two processors onto a single device, forming a superchip. For instance, the NVIDIA Grace CPU Superchip, a processor designed to provide energy-efficient performance for cloud, corporate, and HPC customers, combines two CPU chips to produce 144 Arm Neoverse V2 cores.
A Grace CPU and a Hopper GPU are additionally joined via NVIDIAÂ NVLink-C2C to form the Grace Hopper Superchip. It combines accelerated computation for the most demanding AI and HPC tasks on a single chip.
One of the first to employ Grace Hopper will be Alps, an AI supercomputer slated for the Swiss National Computing Center. For instance, an NVIDIA DGX system’s eight GPUs’ NVLinks exchange quick, direct connections using NVSwitch chips. When combined, they allow for an NVLink network in which each server’s GPU functions as a single system.
DGX workstations itself may be stacked into modular units of 32 servers to provide even higher performance, forming a strong, effective computing cluster.
Using an NVLink network within the DGX and an NVIDIA Quantum-2 switched InfiniBand fabric between them, users may integrate a modular block of 32 DGX devices into a single AI supercomputer. An NVIDIA DGX H100 SuperPOD, for instance, has 256 H100 GPUs to provide up to an exaflop of the best AI performance.
Users may access cloud-based AI supercomputers, like the one Microsoft Azure is constructing with tens of thousands of A100 and H100 GPUs, to achieve even higher performance. Some of the biggest generative AI models in the world are trained using this service by organizations like OpenAI.
