Uther vs. Morgause: Who is really to “blame” for Morgana’s destruction?

There’s also secret option Nr. 3, Merlin himself. But we’ll get to that. Now pull up a chair and be ready for LOTS of pro Morgana meta with a dash of Regina Mills on top.

One of the most common criticisms MERLIN receives to this day is that Morgana flipped from tragic hero to heartless villain way too quickly and with no buildup to justify it. For the record, I do not agree with that. But let’s look at who Morgana is:

From the Pilot onward she is introduced and presented as someone deeply affected by Uther’s purge of magic users (It makes Dragon Age seem like child’s play when it comes to this issue in a lot of ways), she is also shown as the only character who openly defies the King of Camelot himself and the second character not putting up with Arthur’s fratboy behavior after Merlin himself. 

The first hint we get at Morgana maybe having a magical secret are her (prophetic) nightmares, treated by Gaius through the usage of sleep tonics. And believe me, given what those tonics were made of back in the day (And MERLIN does a great job at using actual herbalism), that wasn’t a good idea, nor did it help her physical or psychological health.

Morgana spends two seasons unraveling while preserving her kind, supportive, loving core. She stands up for what is right, defends her friends, saves countless lives and risks everything to save baby!Mordred from execution (!). (The fact that Uther went as far as executing CHILDREN is a whole other can of worms that’s terrifying to consider) What does her support network look like, well, the small one she’s got, anyway? First, there’s Gaius who, with the best of intentions, seeks to “treat” her problems away and, as a magic user himself, should know better. Then there’s Arthur who doesn’t pick up on any of the clues but does care for her in his own way. Which leads us to Gwen who is her rock, her haven and her best friend. And then there’s Merlin himself, her mirror, “the light to her darkness”, the ONE person whose support could have turned everything around. But Kilgarrah’s toxic warnings, his own (Justified, I get that) fear of being exposed and circumstances prevented them from seeing each other as kin. However, Merlin telling that kid in the tourney about his magic to save him but never opening up to Morgana kind of debunks that argument.

Morgana does try to reach out, mainly to Gaius and Merlin. Which leads to her and everyone’s fear of Uther. Was her fear of him justified, yes, we’ll pose that question. Would Uther have gone as far as harming/killing her over her magic? Despite his sudden, overly pronounced fondness of her in Season 3 (To build him up as a victim and her as his destroyer), I believe he would have had her killed. Why? He has both psychologically and physically harmed her before. Going as far as locking her up in a cell, clapped in irons, no less. For....defying him. 

The thing is, both she and Uther received a radical switch in written perspective once Season 3 begins. Paranoid Uther suddenly treats her like his greatest treasure, never picks up on her “evil smirks” or wonders about her sudden compliance and docile behavior. Where the scene at Gorlois’ grave in Season II (The first time she actively tried to have him killed but backed out & saved him in the end) was layered, genuine and heartbreaking for both characters involved, Season 3′s switcharoo feels extremely forced in Uther’s favor and it takes till Season 5 until Uther is shown as a villain again. How did this come about?

Morgause?

Morgause enters Morgana’s life without telling her who she actually is. She is introduced manipulating her from the start. For all her talk of “sisterhood” (They are half-sisters), every interaction between them has a sinister undertone of Morgause actively fueling Morgana’s rage and fear to support her own lust for power. Note how Morgana becoming queen was Morgause’s idea? How Morgause used her in the season finale of Series 2, leading directly to the awful conclusion of Merlin poisoning Morgana (Her magic was used by Morgause to power the undead knights) to blackmail Morgause into ending her siege on Camelot? Does Morgause immediately stop? No. She only stops once it’s made clear that there is no other way if she wants her sister to live. This isn’t a point in her favor, nor is her taking Morgana away afterwards.

The Missing Year with Morgause

Series 3 begins with Morgana having been gone for a year, apparently in Morgause’s care. The fact that this year, which is when this “personality change” occurred, isn’t even shown in flashbacks or referenced much, we are left with the question: What on earth did Morgause do to Morgana to ensure her loyalty while turning her against everyone she once cared about? Morgana states that she “grew up”. She tells Arthur that they “were both wrong” about being friends. She tells Merlin much later after Morgause is dead that she “has no one left to be loyal to.” So what was the straw that broke the camel’s back? The unforgivable acts Morgause could reference in order to crush Morgana’s love for her friends?

Merlin

The titular character, the hero, the character who consistently insists that magic must be used for good. The first gif is from a scene where a terrified, traumatized Morgana seeks out Merlin, tells him everything she is scared of, BEGS HIM for nothing more than reassurance and he......does nothing. Out of fear? Maybe. But he later reveals his magic to people he has known for like five minutes (IE Freya), so that argument loses a lot of its carrying power, esp. since Merlin KNOWS Morgana wouldn’t betray him. Her constant quarrels with Uther and her protecting baby!Mordred proved that beyond ALL DOUBT. The second gif is the culmination of a tragedy....

Merlin poisons Morgana, his best friend, to force Morgause to end her siege and to save Camelot after (wrongly) believing that he had given her numerous outs to confess her collaboration with Morgause (Which is how anyone would have taken her behavior, sadly. Her being unaffected by the Sleep Spell, her being unable to explain this and seemingly lying about why the Undead Knights wouldn’t kill her) and being cornered into this desperate, vile act of attempted murder. Now imagine, for a second, if Merlin had shared what he uncovered with Morgana while Arthur isn’t nearby to gauge her reaction. It could have and very likely WOULD HAVE changed everything. It might even have turned Morgana against Morgause.

Remember the reference to Regina Mills in this post’s title? This is what they have in common. They were both innocent, kind, heroic, loving young women who were hurt, gaslit and betrayed by those who should have loved them. (Cora/Rumple being the Uther/Morgause parallel) They both committed unspeakable acts after “going evil”, they both never stood a chance because outside their abusers, even their friends abandoned them time and time again. Why is Morgana even more tragic though?

Because she never makes it to the other side. She is never shown hope, love and support. She is “put out of her misery” (Katie McGrath) in the end.

So who is to “blame” for Morgana’s destruction outside her writers who did give her glimmers of her old self but only had villains show her support (Aggravaine especially)? All three characters. Uther, Morgause AND Merlin. Merlin does admit that he blamed himself at least, small comfort though that is.

Morgana Pendragon doesn’t deserve the hate she got. She deserved the world and got NOTHING but misery, pain and anguish. She was literally chained up in a pit with Aithusa for TWO YEARS (The dragon outgrowing the pit leading to heartbreaking screams she was forced to hear 24/7 while screaming for death herself.). 

She is one of the most WRONGED characters I have ever encountered and there is literally nothing that can be said to justify her fate.

He has been married and divorced three times over the years. He typically seeks no acute or preventative medical care. ___ was treated by a psychiatrist previously, but he did not like taking the prescribed medications so he stopped taking them and did not keep any further psychiatric appointments.

Patient denies any previous diagnoses. However, when asked why he saw a psychiatrist in the past, he tells you that the psychiatrist diagnosed paranoid schizophrenia, but that he does not have any psychiatric diagnoses or problems. He states: “It was just a way for him to make money off me coming in and seeing him and paying the drug companies for me to take all those meds!”
