hello! are you going to any of the following mountain goats concerts: 04/19 Salina KS, 04/20 St Louis MO, 04/21 Pelham TN? hey wow I'm going to those three shows! and what's more, I've made patches to give away (for free!!) to people at those shows! here's what some of them look like:
[image description: a set of four patches with black printed designs laid out across the back of my jacket. they are: a nametag design reading "I am just a broken machine" printed on blue, a cluster of flowers and a flame reading "I feel so proud to be alive" printed on a trans flag, a boot with a footprint and the words "be untraceable" printed on yellow, and a pair of interlocked hands with the words "twin high maintenance machines" printed on white. end ID]
i've got eight designs in total and multiple colors of each one! find me as the person in the black jacket with the big gold spikes on one shoulder and I'll let you grab a patch - the trans flag heretic pride one will be specifically upon request because I don't have as many of that one, so if you want that one please ask me for it! looking forward to hopefully seeing some of y'all out there <3
#img#transmissions from lyric#described#concerts#tmg#the mountain goats#& for those who arent going to be at any of these shows but want a patch: i do not formally sell them but feel free to dm me#and we can definitely figure smth out! im more than happy to mail one or something#the patch zone

Tarot Pull for 3/5 Kraken-Jets! :
ok ok interesting!! cool!! so introspection, the calling to a time of solitude... i think with about 20 games left, it's a good time for the boyos to re-reflect and set intentions for what they personally want out of this season. playoffs sure, but i think there are other ways for the team and their fans to make the most out of the rest of the games. i also think this team has a lot of quietly talented players on the team, not necessarily the most showy/their stats don't support it all the time but a lot of our key players are often just kinda... sneakily good? lol so mayhaps some of those guys will get to shine tonight! the overcoming obstacles card aghhhgg,,, after whatever last night's game was i'd bet there are maybe mixed emotions and feelings in the lockerroom right now, and with wenny scratched, dunner likely out, a lot of really dirty plays from the flames.. that's probably lingering on their minds at least a bit? and to add insult to injury apparently the entire jetsties crew is sick and so the boyos could catch a COLD! :( but along the lines of what the card says to, a recent obstacle or loss appearing, i think this card and the introspection card go hand in hand to say!! we are still here!! we are still balanced and strong!! back-to-back games??? no problem!!
the imagery omg the goat... stubbornness.. work ethic... yannis?? burky?? if burky finally gets a goal tn i'll cry
is it bad to say for the weasle i want riggy to have a day. the 6'7 weasle!! he did really well yesterday id love to see some more of that
#something something jets are really good something something we collapse without dunner. SHUSH#kraken by a thousand!!! look at these cards!!!#seattle kraken#kraken lb#tarot pulls#andre burakovsky#yanni gourde#jamie oleksiak

Wedding Highlights
-My dad made a racist joke about the coronavirus at the rehearsal dinner. I know he was drunk and on cold medicine but still. My husband is half-Taiwanese, his stepmom is Filipino, his sisters is half-Taiwanese and his little sister is half-Filipino, one of the groomsmen is half-Japanese and one of the groomsmen’s wife is half-Filipino. And my dad made a very inappropriate joke and then doubled down on it with “Too soon? Too soon?” TOO SOON? TRY 50 YEARS TOO LATE FOR THAT TO BE REMOTELY APPROPRIATE. (not that it ever actually would have been but like maybe the other white people in the room would have let it slide 50 years ago)
-But he did redeem himself and get along wonderfully with my father-in-law, which makes sense because they are basically the same person.
-My dad also started crying when we were lining up for the first runthrough at the rehearsal and didn’t stop for the rest of the weekend.
-Seriously our daughter/father dance was just him rocking back and forth, holding me, and crying. Sweet but also dude you’re not selling me across the country for some goats I live two hours away.
-my brother and my new sister-in-law got along really well. a little too well, tbh. Christian and I were talking about how much my brother seemed to like his sister and I was like, “She’s too good for him.” and he replied, “He’s too good for her!” We are excellent big siblings. Also no, she’s definitely too good for my brother. I love him, but he needs someone who can put up with his shit and i don’t think that is her.
-my baby sister-in-law who is 9 and my cousin who is 10 were junior bridesmaids hit it off immediately because of course they did, and at one point my 10yo cousin Cori said, “I told her I wished Mississippi was part of TN and not its own state.” KID LOGIC IS THE BEST. Like honey she would still live 6 hours away but I appreciate the sentiment.
-My cousin who is getting married in October caught the bouquet so that’s perfect. Also my other brother and his fiance were like trying to book our vendors for their wedding AT my wedding which like go for it, they are awesome!
-Not that our caterers weren’t great but their cleanup was a little TOO good. Like I kept trying to grab us a piece of cake or a drink and then I’d set it down, go dance for half a song, and when I came back it was gone.
-I spent most of the night far too sober given that I was the bride.
-It’s a small world because one of my husband’s friends randomly knew one of my friends from high school.
-My husband struggled to get my wedding band over my knuckle and it was a super cute awkward moment during the ceremony and I had to help him.
-Yeah it was like me and two other people who knew wtf the songs were when we had the dj play Simple and Clean and Face my Fears during the reception but who fucking cares it’s my nerd wedding and I’ll dance if I want to.
-Oh and my uncle played a custom arrangement of Dearly Beloved when I walked down the aisle and it was everything I dreamed it would be
-No one tells you that the most exciting part of getting married is when it’s all over and you realize you don’t have to stress about shit anymore
-I didn’t get nearly enough cake at the wedding but we now have almost the whole bottom tier of the cake left and idk how we’re gonna eat it all
-one of my friends got us a card that is for a 10th wedding anniversary but he crossed out the 1 so it is wishing us a happy 0th wedding anniversary and it’s my favorite
-we have sooooo much alcohol left over. we will drinking wine for months
-i got married and it’s pretty great. here’s hoping the coronavirus doesn’t ruin our honeymoon plans because we were gonna go to Japan in November
-like we’ve been living together for like two years so basically nothing has changed which is weird but also my boy calls me wife now which is gr9 and I like it a lot
-our cats have no idea what happened except that we left them for a few days and it’s weird because we’re like ‘mommy and daddy got married!!!!’ and they’re just like ‘feed us’
#look i want to be clear that marriage is not the end all be all of existence#like when you're happy as a single person you're more likely to be in a healthy place#for when you find a relationship#but also#having a Person who is Mine is pretty great too#and sometimes it feels so surreal

Cave of Swimmers Premieres Scorching New Single!
~Doomed & Stoned Debuts~ By Billy Goate (Editor in Chief) Photos by Jen Cray
I've long been a fan of Miami's CAVE OF SWIMMERS, ever since I heard their stunning eponymous EP in 2013. It was just so...different. The shot in the arm that the heavy scene desperately needed. This was followed by their milestone full-length debut, 'Reflection' (2015) which still stands as one of the decades finest releases. Long-time friends Guillermo Gonzalez (guitar/vox) and Arturo Garcia (drums) come to us by way of Venezuela, where they crew up on a steady diet of Metallica and Candlemass. If you've missed our in-depth interview with the band, you'll definitely want to check it out to get their incredible backstory.
When I first heard Cave of Swimmers I said to myself, "Holy shit! These guys should be HUGE!" If we were still in the glory days of terrestrial radio, I have no doubt Cave of Swimmers would be a name we'd be hearing a lot more of. In today's crapshoot environment of online releases, it's becoming more and more difficult for a solid act like Cave of Swimmers to be noticed. Until last year.
The visionary festival Psycho Las Vegas invited Guillermo and Arturo to join their stellar inaugural line-up and I couldn't wait to catch their act. I was impressed by the passion, ingenuity and, well, fun which the dynamic duo brought to the stage. Look at Guillermo shred! And what's this, is he dancing to Latin rhythms? Yes! Who would have thought to marry heavy metal with the infectious groove of Argentine dance and the gravity of doom? Whatever you call this innovative new style, it was clear it worked and it was uniquely Cave of Swimmers. Most importantly, the crowd loved it.
It was clear that these guys could not only convincingly hold their own, but hang with the best of them. Months later, Arturo and Guillermo would fulfill the dream of opening for their childhood idol Jason Newsted, of Metallica fame. Again, I say, these guys have the potential to go mainstream.
And now to the brand new Cave of Swimmers track before us. On July 3rd, Southern Druid Records will release 'The Sun' (2017) as a limited edition 7". There are two tracks here, really: the title track, which makes me want to do something very impulse and foolish. I can see a whole lot of stage-diving going on to "The Sun." The song is a lightening in a bottle, a furious hornet’s nest of riffs that would have been legendary in the adrenaline fueled heyday of thrash. Everything about this works, from Guillermo’s laser-sharp shredding and bold, almost operatic, vocals to Arturo's moshing rhythms. Exciting is the word I'm looking for.
Given the massive length of Cave of Swimmer's opus, Guillermo tells me, "We knew we needed shorter songs. There's only so much you can play in 45 minutes of an usual set, and our songs are so long that we mostly end up playing no more than four. That's basically where the idea came from: write a shorter song, more straight to the point. Ideas kept pouring in, and the song evolved into what it is. Just above 6 minutes, it's our shortest song yet. It's fast paced, too."
As far as lyrical content goes, Guillermo says "The Sun" is self-evidence. "It deals with the sun and how it's something that is there for us; it exists and we know it's real. It's bright, we can see it, we can feel it... It's about something palpable in moments when we don't know who or what is real. I think it's good for us to have a 'sun' in our lives in order to keep us grounded, motivated. For some people it might be a loved one, or a pet or even art. Music is definitely mine! Something real in times of doubt. Reliable, life-giving, wound-healing. I used to work at a therapist's office in Delray Beach, where a lot of people went for rehab. After being there for a couple of years, listening to all kinds of stories about personal issues and tribulations and just relating, to feeling hopeless and lonely at certain times. I walked out of the place for a breather one day, and it was a beautiful day outside, took a deep breath, and thanked goodness for the sun."
Played live, "It's a fast song. Lots of singing, a lot of notes, a lot of emotions. It's definitely different than what we've done in the past, but it's still us. It sounds like we did it, it sounds like I sang it -- for better or worse (laughs) -- sounds like we played it. So it's us. It's very honest. Hopefully it'll remind whoever is paying attention that someone out there loves you. Guess who?"
The second track (which Doomed & Stoned debuts today) is vintage Cave of Swimmers. Arturo tells me that "Hangman" is one of the first songs he and Guillermo wrote. "It’s based on the movie The Machinist, starring Christian Bale," he explains. "Bale plays a factory worker whose insomnia, lucid dreams and very realistic hallucinations lead him to become emaciated, and to be the cause of other problems in the work place. He finds comfort in Stevie, a prostitute with genuine affection for him and Marie, a waitress at a dinner he frequents. Musically, it came out of an old riff we had that we sped up. We also included some dance breaks for Guillermo and most importantly, our audience."
You can get the limited edition 7" The Sun on pre-order via Southern Druid Records here. AND...if you get a chance to see Cave of Swimmers live, do not miss them!

Exclusive: We Found Kristin Cavallari and Jay Cutler’s ‘Forever Home,’ and Just … Wow
realtor.com; Todd Williamson/Getty Images for JDRF
If you’ve been watching the new E! reality show “Very Cavallari” (it premiered on July 8), you’ve no doubt heard NFL quarterback Jay Cutler gushing to his wife, Kristin Cavallari, about a house in Nashville, TN, he’s dying to buy—and, in the latest episode, we finally get a good look.
In the episode titled “Boss Moves,” Cutler takes Cavallari (with cameras in tow) to see what he believes is the perfect house for their family: a 10,000-square-foot mansion with eight bedrooms and eight baths on 10 acres of land called Highbrow Hill. Despite the hilarious name, it really is a gorgeous property complete with a chicken coop, horse stables, and a goat barn—amenities that Cavallari says will give the couple’s three young children some “fun, cool chores” to do.
During this tour, Cutler is all in, ready to buy the house right then and there. Cavallari, who was reluctant at first to move, is charmed by the property, and agrees that they should buy it with one stipulation: that they stay there for good. She’s sick of moving, and wants their next house to be for keeps. Judging from the looks of this property, this home has it all—so they truly can kick back here till the cows come home.
And that got us here at realtor.com® wondering: Where is this gorgeous place, anyway?
An exclusive peek inside Kristin Cavallari and Jay Cutler’s new home
With some sleuthing and sifting through our own listings, we pinpointed this celeb duo’s new digs—and confirmed that they indeed bought the place, back in April, for $4.23 million.
Which all makes total sense in terms of timing: Just this June, the couple put the Nashville house they’re currently living in up for sale for $7.9 million.
In that context, their new home appears to be quite the bargain! But as the photos below show all too well, “bargain” is hardly the word that comes to mind when you see Highbrow Hill.
Care to see inside Cavallari and Cutler’s forever home? Take a look.

After a rather enjoyable trip of Chennai of a week, during which I met my maternal grandparents, relatives and friends; it was time for me to return to Mumbai – again by train! Oh, and for my account of my train journey from Mumbai; please refer https://ashwinkumar1989.online/2017/11/22/a-two-night-sojourn-to-chennai-part-1/ and https://ashwinkumar1989.online/2017/11/23/a-two-night-sojourn-to-chennai-part-2/ . This time, I took 11042 MAS CSMT express on Nov 25; which departs from MAS at 12 20 and reaches CSMT at 13 35 (I would get down at Thane) – this would enable me to rest for more than half a day at home before the usual Monday morning blues (heightened after a one-week holiday!) . As always, please refer to the legend at the bottom for all technical terms and station codes (not all, mind you!) . Non-railfans and purist railfans, I warn you in advance that this blog will contain a LOT of loco numbers and other technical stuff! Also everyone, this is so long that I have to split it into 3 PARTS so that it doesn’t get boring! 😛
After brunch, I left home by 11am and took an Ola auto to reach MAS by 11 30 without much ado. One look at the giant digital display board told me that 11042 was berthed on Platform 9. On PF 6, 22602 SNSI MAS superfast was resting with APU-fitted TNP WDM3As 16084R and 16853R; while on PF 8 a shining LGD WAP4 22322 was resting – according to railfan Jyothish K it had brought in 12696 TVC MAS superfast.
My coach S8 was a very old 1996 old make, but surprisingly had mobile charging sockets in all bays and even bio-toilets at one end! :O It was 5th from the loco – AJJ WAP1 22011, and I had a trackside window seat LB 😉 .
From PF 3, 22637 MAS MAQ West Coast express departed at 12 05. On PF 8, 12608 SBC MAS Lalbagh express arrived at 12 19 (4 mins late) behind RPM WAP7 30332. One of its 2 AC Chair Cars was a 2015 make, and it had 3 Deen Dayalu coaches (1 2017 made). We departed at 12 25 (5 mins late) after sounding 2 LT horns. For a while, there was parallel action with the rake of 22602 which was being shunted – its front SLR had broken shutters despite being 2015 made 😦 . Near BBQ Coaching Depot, I saw a 20 lever Cabin; and a Train Care Centre in the distant right. On a siding was TNP WDM2 16885 in GOC livery (maybe to be transferred to GOC?). As always, the BBQ ETS was home to a variety of locos – RPM WAP7s 30367 and 30413, ED WAP7 30573 (First time I had ever seen an ED P7! ), LGD WAP4s 22663 and 22515; and AJJ WAP1 22021. Not a single ED/RPM WAP4 though – times have indeed changed! :O
There was a PSR of 30 kmph before BBQ. I also saw Don Bosco Higher Secondary school before VPY. There was a TSR of 30 kmph before Villivakkam – there I saw a road with name “Loco Scheme Ist Street”! :O I guess it is a railway colony! Near Korattur there was a lake full of moss. By now we were galloping and the continuous honking (the two LT horns and a rarely used HT whine) was a treat to the ears, accompanied by mild flat wheel sounds coming from the rear of the coach :P. There was another dirty moss-filled lake near Ambattur. As we crawled through Avadi, I could see the Tube Products of India factory in the right. I also saw the Madras College of Pharmacy and 2 Kalyana Mandapams before a WAG9 hauled BOXN rake crossed us (a cue to the freight action to follow). After the line to PTMS branched off to the distant right, a Tigerface WAG7 hauled express crossed us – probably 16054 TPTY MAS express.
The surroundings became more rural from hereon. I observed Jaya College and Vivekananda Vidyalaya, and a Tigerface WAG7 hauled BOXN freight at Veppampattu. There was a lot of stagnant dirty water for a while, and quite a few temples before the crawl through Tiruvallur. There was a container freight hauled by GMO WAG9H 31822 standing in the opposite direction. Then an express crossed on the left before the Egattur forests. There were a lot of sheep, goats, cows and calves grazing. There was a stagnant patch of water in the dry Kushasthalai river. My ticket was then checked – the TTE asked only for the ID proof – I showed him my PAN Card, but he told me that it’s a photocopy and asked me to keep Aadhaar card for safety! Aaah…just underlines the obsession of our government with Aadhaar for anything and everything! Anyway, I have the original Driving License as well just in case!
There was a BCNA rake led by Ajni WAG9 31259 standing at Tiruvalangadu. We crawled and changed tracks – now we were on the leftmost track! On the right most track there was a TSR of 100 kmph! I then saw a stagnant pond and a long line of palm trees, as well as a Splendor bike parked in the midst of this wilderness before Mosur! After Puliyamangalam, 12610 SBC MAS Intercity exp crossed us with RPM WAP7 30427. Then there was again a TSR of 100 kmph on the right most track! :O Then there was a lake before a PSR of 15 kmph (which would continue till we took the line to RU from AJJ). In the AJJ yard, there was a Car Carrier AutoLinx rake and a BCNA freight with LGD WAG9 31556. An EMU departed towards MAS on the distant right as we pulled into the station (PF 3) at 13 44, 22 mins late. 3 families got in our coach. There was an EMU waiting on PF 4, ready for departure towards MAS. 22638 MAQ MAS West Coast express arrived on PF 2 as we departed after a two-minute halt.
An LHB rake crossed us on the left (12551 YPR KYQ AC superfast ?)while we changed tracks to move to the RU line. There were people hanging from the doors of our front 2 coaches! :O On the line to RU, there was a TSR of 80 kmph for passengers and 50 kmph for goods. Soon there was a teaser of the scenery to follow later in this section, in the form of a forest, corn fields, palm trees and irrigated fields before we passed the ghost station of Ichiputtur. Then there was a stagnant pond and some coconut trees before an express crossed with a P1 – probably our counterpart 11041 CSMT MAS express. Then there was a small pond with water lilies and a lot of houses and an LC before we pulled into Tiruttani, where a few people got down and a family got in. 12245 HWH YPR Duronto (apparently running about 3 hours late) passed the station without stopping, hauled by TATA WAP7 30549.
There was a small river called Nandhi, before a highway gave us company on the right. Then came the scenic Ponpadi station (last station in TN on this route) which was full of trees, following which there was that famous 90 degrees curve.
On the DOWN line, there was a TSR of 50 kmph for passengers and 30 kmph for goods before Venkatanarasimharajuvaripeta – the station with the record for having the longest name in IR (or has it been broken?), and the first station in A.P in this route. There was a Grand World Water Park (a really scenic location for a water park, I must say! 😀 ) . Then there were some stagnant water patches and the dry Nagari river. There was a tractor on a thin road next to the DOWN line bridge! Now the DOWN line was really down – as it was below us! 😛
Then there was a beautiful lake near Ekambarakuppam, in which there was a grass island. I saw cows and calves grazing. There was also a uniquely shaped mountain peak christened “Dadar express” by railfans – since it resembles a train being pulled by a diesel loco – 12163/64 MS-DR superfast (earlier 11063/64 MAS-DR express) has always been associated with diesels; in fact, for a brief period from 2003 to 2006 it was hauled by a diesel loco (usually a GTL WDM2) between Pune and MAS!
Check this video of us blasting through the scenery – rock cuttings, greenery, trees and mountains; skipping Vepagunta on the way – all the way our P1 honking melodiously https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2M6P4-2EBOc&t=9s . Then there was the lovely sight of boys playing hockey at a school, while a lot of girls and boys watched. This school was, again; in a very scenic setting – with a beautiful lake nearby and a lot of coconut trees. A lot of buildings signalled the arrival of Puttur, where some people got down. We overtook a freight led by twin WAG7s (leading – ED 27481). The separation between the DOWN and UP tracks made for some good photography! 😉
There was another beautiful lake and some spectacular scenery (yet again!) in the form of forests and surrounded by a line of coconut trees and of course the Sapthagiri Hills in the distant right!
There was a TSR of 80 kmph before Pudi, where we overtook a TNP ALCO with a few freight bogies. There was the dry Swarnamukhi river, before we crossed an almost 1 hour late running 66048 TPTY MAS Fast MEMU. At RU yard, there was an LGD WAP4 22717 coupled to a now rare Rajdhani liveried AJJ WAP1 22058. There were Humsafar coaches (have seen them here since March end this year!), few BCNA rakes, an accident relief train as well as a WDP4D in the distant right; as we pulled into the station (PF 1) at 14 57, 7 mins late. Near us lay GTL WDM3D 11118 with 2 Accident Relief Medical Vans. On PF 5, 22603 KGP VM superfast pulled in behind RPM WAP4 22872. On the distant right, a BCNA rake led by BZA WAG7 28464 (in WAP4 shell) left (in our direction) after continuous LT horn blowing. On PF3, 16381 CSMT CAPE Jayanthi Janata express arrived behind ED WAP4 22526.
I had an Egg Biryani for lunch (which was strictly ok) as we left at 15 10. I spotted twin ED WAG7 twins 27653 and 27497 in the distant right. I will be continuing my account in Part 2. Hope you have enjoyed so far!

Self-betrayal in “Prowl Great Cain”
"This is a song about a guy who betrayed a guy, and he feels bad about it because they didn't kill the guy that he betrayed. If he had killed the guy, he probably would be able to just not think about it so much. Like, if it was movies, then maybe he would be haunted by it and wake up in the middle of the night. But realistically speaking, out of sight, out of mind, it would have been better if the guy had died in prison under the horrible torture that he handed him over to.... It takes place in Cambodia after it is no longer Democratic Kampuchea." -- John Darnielle, 2011-04-06 - Mercy Lounge - Nashville, TN
"Autogenocide is 'the mass killing by a government or regime of a section of its own people'. The term was coined in the latter half of the 1970s to describe the actions of the Khmer Rouge government of Cambodia, to distinguish such acts from the genocide of groups considered 'other' by a government, such as the killing of Jews and people of Slavic origin by Nazi Germany." -- Wikipedia article, "Cambodian genocide"
"We push shame away as fast as we can, covering it with more tolerable states of being." -- Patricia DeYoung, Understanding and Treating Chronic Shame
"Prowl Great Cain" by the Mountain Goats sets the Old Testament story of Cain and Abel in the context of Cambodia in 1979. The second line in the chorus, "Prowl through empty fields, great Cain" ties together the story of Cain, the farmer who was condemned by God to wander the Earth, never to be able to grow crops again, with the Khmer Rouge Killing Fields. The first line, more cryptically, declares "I feel guilty, but I can't feel ashamed."
Who's the "I" in the song? I think it's Cain himself, or the character meant to be the 1979 Cambodian stand-in for him. The Cain character in the song is the person who betrayed their brother, or someone else close to him: "Wonder if you'll ever get the chance to ask me why I turned you in." So Cain addresses himself in the chorus, "Prowl through empty fields, great Cain". (The alternative is that that's the voice of God telling Cain to "prowl through empty fields", but it's not God who feels guilt or shame, and I don't think the chorus would switch perspectives in the middle.) I'll call the narrator in this song "Cain", since we don't have another name for him.
Cain doesn't need to prove to himself that he has no reason to be ashamed, which is what "I feel guilty, but I can't feel ashamed" would probably mean if he was saying it to anybody else. In the privacy of his own head, he's merely observing his own experience: he can't feel ashamed. But if he feels guilty, he must know he's done something wrong. It's easier to live with guilt than shame, but to be unable to feel shame is to be missing a section from the range of emotions it's possible a person to experience. In its own way, that's a hard way to live.
An editor of the "Prowl Great Cain" page on the Mountain Goats wiki wrote, by way of explaining the song's title and chorus, "God cursed Cain so he could grow no crops, leaving him to wander. God also marked him so that if anyone were to harm him, that person would be paid back sevenfold, ensuring that he would live the rest of his natural life in a cursed exile."
I like the interpretation here of God's marking of Cain as a condemnation of Cain into loneliness and isolation. If people think they will be punished severely for hurting you, they're not likely to get to know you at all; they're more likely to avoid you, since hurting someone you're in a close relationship with is inevitable. Cain's mark only protects him from bodily harm -- not from enforced solitude and its accompanying emotional harm.
"I saved my own skin, but I live to fight, I live to fight another day." The price Cain paid for "saving his own skin" is not shame (which he isn't feeling), nor is it guilt (he just justified his action by reference to his need to survive), but rather, isolation.
Especially since the song suggests the person Cain betrayed is still alive, in a sense, he really betrayed himself. The other person survived, but Cain is left to live with the guilt of having chosen to turn his friend in for certain torture and probably death, a guilt that is independent of the betrayed person's actual fate. Even if you haven't lived during a genocide, you may have had the experience of having to make hard choices in order to survive. And those choices, too, often involve sacrificing pieces of ourselves.
"The soldiers who carried out the executions were mostly young men or women from peasant families." -- Wikipedia article, "Khmer Rouge Killing Fields"
About 25% of the people of Cambodia were murdered under Pol Pot's regime during the 1970s. There were, presumably, many people who had to make the choice that the narrator of "Prowl Great Cain" made: to betray their own friends or relatives in order to save their own lives. Choosing between death and intolerable guilt is not an enviable choice to be faced with. Since this is a Mountain Goats song, it takes the perspective of the person who chose to survive, suspending moral judgment.
How does it feel to be both the betrayer and the betrayed, to be complicit with genocide -- something that violates every moral value you have -- in order to save yourself and to, perhaps, be of service to someone else once you're in a place of safety?
"Since You are banishing me today from the soil, and I must hide myself from Your presence and become a restless wanderer on the earth, whoever finds me will kill me." -- Genesis 4:14 (Holman Christian Standard Bible)
In Genesis 4, Cain hid himself from God's presence; in "Prowl Great Cain", the narrator hides ("Rummage through the gutted storehouse now / And lick the sweat from my brow") from further violence, and survives to see "the trucks roll out this morning", maybe referring to the retreat of the Khmer Rouge army following the Vietnamese invasion of Phnom Penh in 1979. Whether they fear God's judgment, or the violence of the Khmer Rouge, neither character reveals any internal judgment. But wouldn't you feel ashamed if you killed your own brother?
"The ground is cursed because of you. You will eat from it by means of painful labor all the days of your life. It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field. You will eat bread by the sweat of your brow until you return to the ground, since you were taken from it. For you are dust, and you will return to dust." -- Genesis 3:17-19 (Holman Christian Standard Bible)
I don't know if "lick the sweat from my brow" references this passage as well, but it seems fitting; like his father before him, Cain has to eat by the sweat of his own brow ("lick the sweat from my brow" is, I'm assuming, an imperative addressed to himself), but he must bear the additional hardship of not being able to cultivate the earth, instead having to scavenge for food.
All of this evades the question of who, exactly, the Cain in "Prowl Great Cain" betrayed. The quote from JD says "what is the Cain figure I want who has betrayed his brother?" But that's outside the text, and within the text, the only thing suggesting at the relationship between the "I" and the "you" in the song is the use of the name "Cain". The song doesn't tell us much about the identity of the "you"; we have to guess. The story ends with: "Sometimes a great wave of forgetfulness rises up and blesses me / And other times the sickness howls and I despair of any remedy." If Cain is haunted by the memory of the person he betrayed, wouldn't the "And other times..." line mention that person? It's not a "sickness" to miss someone who is gone, whether or not you did them harm. Guilt as a result of doing something you know to be wrong is a normal emotional reaction, not a "sickness". That's what makes me look further.
To side with someone, a person or an institution, who means you harm is to betray a part of yourself. In the extreme, that can mean destroying -- or at least disowning or dissociating from -- part of yourself. This is something that people tend to do when they're in a situation of captivity and ongoing violence: if you can escape from violence, you do that. When you can't escape from an abuser or captor, siding with them is a way to survive: when you're at somebody's mercy, resistance is not necessarily the way to preserve your life. But coming out of it alive doesn't mean coming out of it whole.
Reading the song literally, Cain turns in his brother to save his own life. We don't know whether he sends him in to be jailed or executed: from history, we can guess the latter. "I wonder if you'll ever get the chance to ask me why I turned you in" suggests Cain thinks his brother might still be alive; on the other hand, the second verse's "Thought I'd seen a ghost up on the boulevard, between the broken bits" suggests death (who would the ghost be if not "you")? But perhaps the ghost is wishful thinking: "It's hard to tell gifts of the spirit from clever counterfeits."
Reading more figuratively: If you experience shame you can't escape from, putting the shamed part of yourself in jail (cutting yourself off from it) saves you from feeling shame, while perhaps leaving you with guilt about killing off a part of yourself.
Moreover, if your attempt at killing part of yourself fails, you've damaged yourself and still have to live with a part of yourself that feels shame, disowned or dissociated as it might be: to force a part of yourself to live "in a cursed exile", unable to connect with other people or even the conscious part of your own mind, is worse than if you'd done nothing. "I can't feel ashamed" doesn't mean there's no shame, only that it's not being consciously felt. You can feel guilty about what you've done to yourself to survive, but you protect yourself from the less tolerable emotion, shame -- or so you think.
When the "great wave of forgetfulness" comes, Cain can ignore or silence the shamed part of himself that lives on in exile -- but that forgetfulness only visits him "sometimes". The "sickness" that howls at other times is the wounded but still living version of himself that continues to carry the shame he can't feel; that's why he recognizes its calls as only a "sickness", because he expects it not to be there at all. He thinks he sees the ghost up on the boulevard because it would ease his mind to have some proof that his shamed self is gone for good. He knows he didn't really see the ghost, because he knows it's still alive and howling. He knows this because, at least "now and then", he feels "the prickings of his conscience", which is to say, the imperative to connect with the exiled part of himself. It's not likely to stop, so while at the end of the song, he's free from the violence that precipitated this self-destructive act, he's not free from the burden of guilt over who he has become in order to survive that violence.

Episode #12: “SO WHO'S WINNING, BITCH!” - Alyssa
aslkdfkjlsdjklflaksdf TIM why did you flip?? I mean
This sort of ruins my game plan I had going in. I was counting on the Kato 2.0 to stick together at least past this vote and NAH Tim goes and votes Zach? I mean, it makes it easier for us in regards to voting out Tim b/c he's done something legitimate now so it won't be straight betrayal. I still feel bad because we were talking F3, but it is what it is. Plan now is to go Alyssa-Karth-Me, but if it's F2, I'd definitely have to make a choice. That's if I make it that far. I think the next move is approaching Stephen, but I don't know how much he'll trust me after all this.
youtube
SO my 3-2-2 idea didn't but out but a bitch K N E W Tim was shady and MY TWO F2S ARE STILL HERE AND SO AM I SO WHO'S WINNING, BITCH!
So uhh its clear that I am being perceived as the goat of the season and I am not sure if I could do anything now that could change it so I shall just continue enjoying the game and do what I feel is right. Seriously, this is a wonderful cast with a lot of really good players. Even though, at the end of the day it comes down to how the jury sees you, I do not really regret the way I have played and I am pretty sure I will learn a lot from this game.
youtube
This messy binch is now idol searching with the remaining members of Kato 2.0 minus Tim. 1) It’s fucking F6 and we only have two more times we can use it 2) If Tim gets it I’m going to fucking YELL
Ok so Karthik woke up last vote and decided to royally screw me the fuck over. He had a talk with Ally before the vote and allegedly she was rude to him which caused him to be emotional and switch his vote to her instead of Zach. I get out of theatre practice to find my entire game set ablaze and on fire. So much for being on the right side of every vote at every tribal right??? And now I'm in the "minority" with Stephen and Im gonna get 6th rip.
OK so I fessed up to voting for Zach to him and everyone except Alyssa lol. And Karthik is explaining how he flipped and why to the entire tribe as well as his initial intentions on getting Zach out. I FLOPPED hard in the challenge and now I have accepted my 6th place title lmaoo. Stephen won which is GREAT because that means we are probably gonna go to rocks unless Karthik betrays me.
Winning this immunity was HUGE. It's firmly placed Zach/Alyssa/Jake against Tim and Karth (hopefully) which should be something I can exploit for the rest of the game. If Karth is willing to stick with me here, we may actually be able to take back control despite his flip at the last vote. I just hope he actually sticks with it since.... you know... he did flip again at the last tribal council for seemingly no logical reason. The reason I sent him to the basement was to limit his communication with the other 3 so hopefully that works out as intended. If Tim does get voted out 4-2 I'm not even sure I'd still be surprised at this point though. I know that everyone is playing for themselves, but they're doing a really good job of hiding it imo.
After I won the immunity challenge I had some kind of weird convos with Zach and Alyssa. Alyssa told me she'd never vote Zach out as long as there were people she didn't trust in the game and she then proceeded to tell me she's been honest and loyal to me for awhile now. But it's hard to rationalize all of this since I KNOW I was a possible target at F8 and F7 according to Karth's info which I do believe at this point. It's almost like she expects me to be grateful my allies were voted out instead of me? I don't wanna get petty or anything but how can she expect me not to see 2 distinct sides when she has literally never seriously considered voting Jake or Zach out, meanwhile I know I was an option for her on many occasions and she's also voted out most of my allies.
The convo with Zach was a little less heated, mostly because we didn't pretend to be allies with each other anymore. But he still gave me the same "I've only lied a little bit" line like... no one wants to hear that. But I've lied to so meh. And I'm about to lie again. Voting Zach at this tribal would probably be my move if not for 2 facts: 1) He appears to be the most likely person on that side to have an idol used on him here, and 2) He seems like the only would who would consider flipping in order to avoid a rock draw.
If tonight works out as intended, it can be a major shift in the game that pushes things in my favor for the last leg of the race. If not, someone else who has backstabbed me (Tim/Karth) is going home. And I can't be too sad about that. Guess I'll just have to win another few immunity challenges then.
I SURVIVED ! 4-3 ! i almost went home but karthik had a change of heart :sparkles:
this conf finna be short. i love everyone left. i hate that they want me out. my name, once again, is trying to be thrown out as the TARGET. so rude. i have trust in alyssa + jake i think for this round. karthik? i'm unsure, especially since ally called him a goat. she also thinks im gonna win so SLDKGLDSKGSD wow. thank u! but nope!
my plan for tonight is tim. him leaving secures a 4v1 majority. well, let me rephrase. "majority". then stephen will target me AGAIN, but maybe thats when i get stephen to vote w me and karthik against like alyssa. idk. i want alyssa out in the sense of... i think she's playing the best. but i love her so much n shes done so much for me that im gonna be heartbroken.
this game suckz. not actually, just sucky situation 4 me. theres a pretty decent chance im leaving tn as well tho, so we can only hope x.
I found the idol. Me. After ALL the BS I've been faced with these past few days I am the only player guaranteed a shot to be in F4. I'm keeping it a secret because I don't owe anything to anyone out here. Final Tribal Council is in sight.
ROCKS ROCKS ROCKS ROCKS????
i am voting alyssa and i'm heartbroken.
she is a great person. i love her with my whole heart, and i think she's genuinely a sweetheart.
she has all right to drag my fatass on concrete.
when u see this alyssa, i just want to say once again i am sorry. from the bottom of my (little) heart, i meant every word i said to you
youtube
Alyssa is voted out after a 3-1 vote after a tie. She becomes the sixth member of our jury.

Exclusive: We Found Kristin Cavallari and Jay Cutler's 'Forever Home,' and Just … Wow
realtor.com; Todd Williamson/Getty Images for JDRF
If you've been watching the new E! reality show “Very Cavallari” (it premiered on July 8), you've no doubt heard NFL quarterback Jay Cutler gushing to his wife, Kristin Cavallari, about a house in Nashville, TN, he's dying to buy-and, in the latest episode, we finally get a good look.
In the episode titled “Boss Moves,” Cutler takes Cavallari (with cameras in tow) to see what he believes is the perfect house for their family: a 10,000-square-foot mansion with eight bedrooms and eight baths on 10 acres of land called Highbrow Hill. Despite the hilarious name, it really is a gorgeous property complete with a chicken coop, horse stables, and a goat barn-amenities that Cavallari says will give the couple's three young children some “fun, cool chores” to do.
During this tour, Cutler is all in, ready to buy the house right then and there. Cavallari, who was reluctant at first to move, is charmed by the property, and agrees that they should buy it with one stipulation: that they stay there for good. She's sick of moving, and wants their next house to be for keeps. Judging from the looks of this property, this home has it all-so they truly can kick back here till the cows come home.
And that got us here at realtor.com® wondering: Where is this gorgeous place, anyway?
An exclusive peek inside Kristin Cavallari and Jay Cutler's new home
With some sleuthing and sifting through our own listings, we pinpointed this celeb duo's new digs-and confirmed that they indeed bought the place, back in April, for $4.23 million.
Which all makes total sense in terms of timing: Just this June, the couple put the Nashville house they're currently living in up for sale for $7.9 million.
In that context, their new home appears to be quite the bargain! But as the photos below show all too well, “bargain” is hardly the word that comes to mind when you see Highbrow Hill.

y husband Nick and I are a pretty good team. I’m the ‘idea’ person and he does all the work.
This weekend, though, Frankie and I were his helpers on a project that has been on my wishlist ever since we began fostering.
I’ve been angling for a ‘dog fence’ for quite some time. Our little hillside farm has six acres, plenty of room for a dog to run, but those acres are surrounded by farmer’s field, woods, one testy neighbor, and a road. It’s rare the foster dog (like Hops) that I can allow off-leash.
I worry too much about losing a dog in the woods, the endless cornstalks, the gun-owning neighbor’s property, or chasing the goats across the road. (The goats live in an invisible fence which makes them readily accessible to the dogs. I’m pretty certain it’s only a matter of time before the wolf or coyotes that have been spotted in our area nab them.)
Ever since Frankie discovered the vultures on the top fence line, he can’t be trusted outside. I keep him with me when I’m working in the gardens on a 60-foot lead which he is expert at tangling around trees and weed buckets, and occasionally, me. He’s chill about it though, he never complains. Once he’s so wound up his movement is restricted, he just sits down and waits. He knows eventually I will notice and come rescue him.
We have a nice level area beside the house where the kids swing set resided until just a few years ago when they became too big and it became too rickety. Up until a month ago, I had two raised beds there to camouflage the lid to the septic tank, but I was willing to sacrifice those beds in the name of dog safety.
I’ve steadily built my case and finally this weekend the ‘puppy play yard’ became a reality!
Well, almost. We still need to build one more gate and do some finish work on the fence, plus the grass isn’t quite all filled in where the raised beds were removed. I also have to do a little research and be certain that none of the perennials in the garden along the house are poisonous to dogs.
Frankie supervised the fence construction.
Frankie kept busy assisting in hold digging, chasing down moths, reminding us not to prop up boards or leave the ladder upright, and determining whether or not the strawberries that grow along one side of the house are safe for dogs to eat (apparently they are!).
I’m excited about designing the play-yard. I’ve dreamed up a little playhouse that Nick will build to cover the septic tank lid for puppies to hide in. A neighbor gave us a fire hydrant sculpted out of scrap metal (he teaches welding at a technical school). I’m scouting out yard sales for a sandbox or pool to make a ball pit, and I already have a tunnel and a sprinkler. I still have to read up on the toxicity of peonies, iris, hen&chicks, mums, lavender, and hostas.
Now all I need are some puppies.
We are currently fosterless. Hops went home with a wonderful couple who are over-the-moon to have him as their first dog. I warned them that he is not a normal dog and they are going to be spoiled. Rare is a dog as easy and sweet and naturally well-mannered as that pup.
We’ll wait to get another foster dog until after we return from my nephew’s wedding in Oklahoma this weekend.
I’ve never been to Oklahoma so this visit will leave North Dakota, Minnesota, Michigan, and Wisconsin as the only US States I’ve never visited.
Maybe I’ll get to those on my book tour for Another Good Dog: One Family and Fifty Foster Dogs. The tour is slowly taking shape. So far, I’ve got a bunch of stops in MD, PA, and VA, and I’m working on stops in Fayetteville, NC, Columbia, SC, and Atlanta, GA. If anyone has a good contact in Nashville, TN or has a great place for me to visit in between the towns listed above, please let me know. I’m really hoping I get to meet some of you (and your dogs!) in my travels.
To try to spread the word and encourage pre-orders (which are GOLD in terms of media attention and marketing for the book), I’ve created little promotional cards with the cover and information.
If you’d like one for yourself or you’d be willing to share them with dog-lovers you know, I’d be happy to send you one or more cards. Just shoot me an email with your mailing address ([email protected]) and I’ll get them right out to you!
Thanks for reading, but most of all thanks for rescuing!
