Phillies carry loads of ability into matchup with Braves
The Braves and Phillies will satisfy in just the NLDS immediately after a mildly unforeseen Philadelphia gain more than St. Louis within just the Wild Card Spherical. Those 2 golf equipment comprehend each individual other nicely following locking horns 19 moments in the course of the every month year, nonetheless as we realize, the playoffs deliver upon a alternative layout of sport. Their lineup is headlined via a handful of sluggers within the supreme 4 areas https://www.shoptheatlanta.com/Tyler_Flowers_Jersey-62, with Kyle Schwarber top off, adopted as a result of some mixture of Rhys Hoskins, Bryce Harper, and J.T. Dodgers vs. Giants live score, updates, highlights from 2021 NLDS Game 5
Two of MLB’s three 100-win teams remain in the playoffs. By the time Thursday night’s NLDS matchup is over, only one will remain.
The Dodgers and Giants have lived up to the hype entering the 2021 MLB postseason as the 107-win Giants and 106-win Dodgers have given baseball fans the only Division Series to end in a winner-take-all game.
Both teams are turning to pitchers who have delivered wins to their squads this postseason. The Giants will hand the ball to Logan Webb, who pitched 7.2 scoreless frames with five hits allowed and 10 strikeouts in Game 1 of the series to put San Francisco up in the series.
The Dodgers will have reliever Corey Knebel open the game after Julio Urias was originally slated to start the matchup. Urias allowed one run over five innings to the Giants in Game 2 with three hits and one walk surrendered, while striking out five. Knebel fanned two while pitching a scoreless, hitless seventh inning of that Game 2 matchup as the Dodgers finished with the 9-2 win.
Sporting News is tracking live scoring updates and highlights from Dodgers vs. Giants in the 2021 MLB postseason. Follow for complete results from Game 5 of the NLDS.

Dodgers vs. Giants live updates, highlights from 2021 NLDS Game 5
11:55 p.m.: It will be Jansen vs. Solano to start the bottom of the eighth.
11:52 p.m. End Top Eighth: One pitch, one out. Doval gets Trea Turner to fly out to right and strand the runners.
11:48 p.m.: Seager comes up empty on a slider as Rogers picks up the huge strikeout. Camilo Doval is coming in to face Trea Turner with two away.
11:44 p.m.: This time to center, but the outcome still the same: single by Betts. He’s got four hits tonight as the Dodgers now have runners on first and second with only one away.
11:41 p.m.: The Dodgers will have a one-out baserunner as Flores can’t hang on to the diving grab and Pollock is able to reach with a single.
11:39 p.m.: A.J. Pollock bats in the frame, ending Treinen’s night out of the bullpen. With only Kenley Jansen up in the bullpen, it looks like the Dodgers will turn to their closer in the bottom of the eighth.
11:38 p.m.: Tyler Rogers starts the eighth for San Francisco, and Taylor flies out to center on the first pitch he sees.
11:35 p.m. End of Seventh: Treinen gets Dickerson swinging to end the seventh.
11:33 p.m.: Alex Dickerson comes in to pinch hit. Webb’s night is done with one run allowed on four hits and one walk across seven innings. He struck out seven.
11:33 p.m.: Two away in the bottom of the seventh as Longoria goes down swinging on a full count.
11:30 p.m.: Final line on Urias’ night: 4.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R (1 ER), 5 K, 0 BB and 1 HR
11:30 p.m.: Urias is done as Blake Treinen is called on for the Dodgers. He’s immediately greeted by a hard liner from Flores that’s right to Taylor in left for the first out.
11:27 p.m. End Top Seventh: Webb sets the side down in order in the seventh. Bellinger comes up empty on a slider to strike out and end the inning.
11:23 p.m.: Lux grounds one sharply to first, but Flores fields it and steps on the bag himself.
11:20 p.m.: Solano snags the liner from Justin Turner for the first out.
11:16 p.m. End of Sixth: Slater grounds into a forceout with Seager fielding the ball and flipping it to Trea Turner at second for the third out. On to the seventh in a tie game at 1-1.
11:12 p.m.: Bryant lines a base hit between third and short. San Francisco has a two-out baserunner.
11:09 p.m.: Crawford swings at the first pitch he sees and flies out to right for the second out.
11:09 p.m.: Posey caught looking at a breaking ball that hooked over the plate for strike three.
11:06 p.m. Giants scoring play: Ruf hits that one to a place no one can catch it. After two hard hit balls his first two ABs, he sends one over the fence 452 feet with an exit velocity of 110.1 mph to tie the game. Giants tie the game at 1-1.
11:00 p.m. End Top Sixth: Smith flies out to left, but the Dodgers have taken the lead with only four frames to go for the Giants.
10:59 p.m.: Trea Turner strikes out swinging at a pitch down below the zone. Two down for Smith.

10:53 p.m.: Heard this one before? Betts drops in a single to left.
10:52 p.m.: Fourth comebacker of the night back to Webb. This one off the bat of Urias. Webb takes it himself to tag Urias out for the first out.
10:46 p.m. End of Fifth: The Giants are set down on strikes as Urias gets Solano swinging to end the inning.
10:46 p.m.: Webb goes down swinging. Back to the top of the order for San Francisco.
10:44 p.m.: Longoria is caught looking at a strike on the upper-inside corner.
10:39 p.m. End Top Fifth: Taylor swings and misses at a fastball on the upper-inside corner for strike three.
10:36 p.m.: Bellinger sends one back to Webb, who records the out.
10:33 p.m.: Lux is caught looking for Webb’s fourth strikeout of the evening.
10:28 p.m. End of Fourth: Flores pops out to second to end the inning. Scoreless through four in San Francisco.

10:23 p.m.: Wild pitch allows Crawford to move up to second.
10:21 p.m.: After a questionable strike two call, Bryant swings and misses on a full-count breaking ball for strike three. One away as Austin Slater comes in for Yastrzemski.
10:17 p.m.: Crawford slices one against the shift that just gets past Seager on the left side of the infield for a leadoff single.
10:15 p.m.: The Dodgers are making plenty of arms available in this one. Walker Buehler might be the only arm not an option to pitch in Game 5.
Max Scherzer is walking down to the bullpen.
— Fabian Ardaya (@FabianArdaya) October 15, 2021
10:13 p.m. End Top Fourth: Great play by Flores to keep his toe on the bag at first on a wide throw by Webb helps the Giants record the third out and escape potential danger.
10:11 p.m.: Smith lays off the slider and takes the walk on a full count to put runners on first and second for Justin Turner.
10:08 p.m.: Another slow roller, this one fielded by Webb, who throws Trea Turner out to keep Betts at second, now with two away.
10:06 p.m.: Seager dribbles one up the line that moves Betts up to second, but Flores will tag Seager for the first out.
10:05 p.m.: Betts picks up his second single of the day, again a liner to left.
10:01 p.m. End of Third: Posey again follows Ruf out to right, but this one is catchable for Betts.
10:00 p.m.: Ruf scorches another one to right center, and Lux snags this one for the second out. Two batted balls over 370 feet for Ruf, both over 98 mph and both with an expected batting average above .500. Both outs.
9:59 p.m.: Solano flies out to center for the first out of the inning.
9:58 p.m.: This season, Solano has a .822 OPS against left-handed pitchers compared to .705 against righties.
9:57 p.m.: Now Urias has entered the game. His entry chases La Stella from second as the right-handed hitting Donovan Solano comes in to lead off the inning.
9:54 p.m. End Top Third: Steven Souza Jr. chases a slider out of the zone, and he’s set down on strikes.
9:53 p.m.: Chris Taylor gives one a ride out to left, but it’s caught by Ruf near the warning track.
9:50 p.m.: Webb catches Cody Bellinger looking with a fastball on the high, inside corner for strike three.
9:46 p.m. End of Second: Graterol gets Webb to chase the breaking ball for the final out of the inning.
9:44 p.m.: Longoria pops it up to first base for the second out of the inning.
9:43 p.m.: The pitch from Graterol: 101.4 mph. The hit by Flores: 68.5 mph off the bat.
9:42 p.m.: Another soft hit for the Giants as Wilmer Flores lifts a looper into left field for a base hit. Runners on first and second now for Evan Longoria.
9:39 p.m.: Mike Yastrzemski pops out to catcher Will Smith in four territory for the first out of the inning.
9:38 p.m.: Kris Bryant breaks his bat on a 100.3 mph pitch and beats the throw from Justin Turner to first.
9:32 p.m. End Top Second: Gavin Lux is caught looking at strike three on the high, outside corner for the third out.
9:31 p.m.: Justin Turner sends a slow roller out to Crawford, who is able to make the strong throw to set him down. That ball had an exit velocity of 47.9 mph.
9:30 p.m.: The Dodgers look like they’ll be handing the ball off to the hard-throwing Brusdar Graterol in the bottom half of the frame.
9:29 p.m.: Will Smith grounds out to open the second inning.
9:24 p.m. End of First: Brandon Crawford chases a curveball out of the zone for strike three to strand Posey at second.
9:19 p.m.: The difference a wall makes: Ruf’s flyout to right traveled 377 feet. The double by Posey went 372, but his was closer to the foul line than center.
9:19 p.m.: This ball is not caught out in right as Buster Posey doubles off the top of the right field wall.
9:18 p.m.: La Stella flies out for the first out and Ruf nearly sends one out, but he too flys out to right field.
9:14 p.m.: The Dodgers might have sent only three batters to the plate, but each of the three batted balls by Los Angeles hitters came off the bat at 97 mph or faster. In fact, the two outs were both over 100 mph.
9:13 p.m. End Top First: Trea Turner bounces into an unassisted 4-3 double play as Tommy La Stella fields the grounder up the middle, steps on the bag for one and throws on to first to nab the speedy Turner. Giants will bat in the bottom half.
9:12 p.m.: Corey Seager lines it to left, but right at the left fielder, Darin Ruf, who catches it for the first out of the inning.
9:10 p.m.: Mookie Betts starts this game up with a line drive base hit into left for a single.
9:08 p.m.: Game 5 of the NLDS between the Giants and Dodgers is underway. First pitch from Logan Webb is low for a ball.
8:49 p.m.: Dave Roberts shared his reaction to the idea of the Dodgers starting Knebel instead of Urias. He had previously said it was an organizational decision, and that he had just one vote.
Dave Roberts on when he first heard the idea from the front office to use an opener and not have Julio Urías start tonight: “My first reaction was, ‘Interesting…’ And not a question mark. Interesting with like a dot dot dot.”
— Jorge Castillo (@jorgecastillo) October 15, 2021
8:30 p.m.: Corey Knebel has started once against the Giants earlier this season. Back on Sept. 3, he pitched two scoreless innings of two-hit baseball with two strikeouts. It wound up being a bullpen game with the Giants ultimately winning 3-2.
8:15 p.m.: Here are the starting lineups for the two teams tonight.

7 players who could be the difference in the World Series
Getty Images
There are plenty of stars in the 2019 World Series, with Cy Young-laden pitching staffs, a former AL MVP plus two MVP-candidate third basemen this season. But they aren’t alone!
Here are seven impact Washington Nationals and Houston Astros who will enhance your Fall Classic viewing.
Getty Images
Yordan Alvarez
Coming into the postseason, it would have been difficult to envision a scenario where Yordan Alvarez would be considered a liability — he did nothing but mash baseballs over his first 87 games as a big leaguer. If baseball really was just a silly spreadsheet game where the best algorithm always won, then the Astros would have no qualms with sticking with a guy who hit .313/.412/.655 with 27 homers over just over half-a-season’s worth of work.
However, baseball is a game with a bunch of flawed humans and it almost never goes exactly according to plan. Instead of seeing the 22-year-old slugger continue to hit baseballs hard and often, we’ve seen him languish through a bleak postseason at the plate. Alvarez is only hitting .171/.227/.244 with an astronomical strikeout rate of 43.2 percent over 44 playoff plate appearances. He’s scuffling right now and it’s a testament to just how deep Houston is that they’ve reached this far.
A.J. Hinch isn’t giving up on him for the World Series, though. Alvarez will be starting for the first two games but there’s a question of whether or not he’ll get the start once the series shifts into the NL ballpark. A big breakout night at the plate before the series moves to Washington would make that decision an easy one for Hinch and it would also be a sign that things are going great for the Astros. They’ve already had consistent production at the plate throughout this postseason and if Yordan Alvarez can come alive, that would be huge for Houston’s chances of winning a second World Series in three years.
— Demetrius Bell
Michael Brantley
It’s just nice to have Michael Brantley fully healthy for the postseason, after several star-crossed years in Cleveland.
The talented outfielder finished third in AL MVP voting in 2014, then followed that up with another productive season in 2015. But when the Indians made their World Series run in 2016, Brantley was limited to just 11 games all season because of a shoulder injury — one that required surgery the offseason prior — and he missed the playoffs.
In 2017 he made the all-star team again in a wonderful comeback year, but then he missed 50 games with an ankle injury. He was rushed back to play in the postseason after playing just the final two games of the regular season, then was just 1-for-11 in Cleveland’s ALDS loss. He had ankle surgery after the season.
This year Brantley signed with the Astros, adding depth to an already formidable lineup. He was an all-star for a third straight year after a typically solid Brantley season, hitting .311/.372/.503 with 40 doubles and 22 home runs while providing above average defense in left field.
He made a crucial defensive play in Game 6 of the ALCS, following up a sprawling catch in left field with a strong, accurate throw to first base for a rally-killing double play.
Have a feeling we are going to be watching this for a while. pic.twitter.com/voWjyNaKfv
— MLB (@MLB) October 20, 2019
Brantley has started all 11 postseason games for Houston this year. He has been relatively quiet offensively, though he homered in the ALDS and hit .304 (7 for 23) in the ALCS. Brantley has also been very selective at the plate, seeing more pitches than anyone else this postseason, averaging 4.30 per plate appearance.
— Eric Stephen
Sean Doolittle
Washington’s bullpen was mostly bad during the regular season, ranking 29th in relief ERA (5.68), ahead of only the execrable 108-loss Orioles. Sean Doolittle was a bright spot though, and shortly after the all-star break stood out with his 2.72 ERA. He allowed only three home runs in his first 44 appearances, but then went through a rough patch, surrendering seven home runs in his next 10 games, more than he allowed in any of his seven previous major league seasons.
That landed Doolittle on the injured list with right knee tendinitis, and after a two-week rest he was refreshed. He allowed all of two runs in eight innings in September, and has allowed two runs in his 7 playoff innings, giving him a 2.35 ERA since his return with 13 strikeouts and two walks. That’s much more in line with his career numbers entering 2019: a 2.83 ERA and 2.40 FIP, the latter ranking ninth among major league relievers.
Daniel Hudson has emerged as the Nationals closer this postseason, but Doolittle saved Game 1 of the NLCS when Hudson was on paternity leave and also got the final three outs to close out the NLDS against the Dodgers. Those two have been the most reliable relievers in the Nationals bullpen, with Doolittle looking a lot like his former self these last two months.
As a bonus, the better the Nationals do, the more likely we are to see Doolittle bust out his lightsaber.

Zack Greinke
Zack Greinke has made the postseason in six seasons on four different teams, but this will be his first World Series appearance. And if the Astros are going to succeed, they’re going to need Greinke to pitch more like he does in the regular season than he has in the playoffs.
In 14 postseason starts, Greinke is 3-6 with a 4.44 ERA. Compare that to his career .625 winning percentage and 3.35 ERA and it seems a bit peculiar. It gets a lot more bleak if you remove his postseason appearances with the Dodgers, where he was quite good. In his eight non-Dodgers playoff starts he’s got one win, an ERA of 6.64, and he averages about 11 H/2.5 HR/3.43 BB/ 7.78 SO per nine innings pitched. All of which is starkly worse than his career numbers.
In this postseason alone, he’s allowed 15 hits, five home runs and five walks in 14 innings. He’s also struck out 16, which shows an almost uncanny ability he has to average almost exactly as many hits as he does strike outs.
But, and I feel like this needs to be emphasized, he is actually a very good pitcher in the regular season. I’m not the type of person who believes in “clutch” or “choking” — I feel like those terms imply that a player can control exactly how well they play in the moment and I think that outside of conditioning and practice, that’s just not the case. Especially for pitchers. You can be in excellent shape and be a perennial Cy Young candidate and sometimes, you’re just not going to have control of your pitches.
That said, he was very good in his appearances with the Dodgers in the postseason, so it’s not necessarily a hopeless case. And if he can limit the contact while keeping up the strikeout numbers, he will be a very important factor to Houston’s success in this series.

Yuli Gurriel
So far this season the Astros first baseman is hitting just .209/.239/.302, and in the ALCS he was just 3-for-24 (.125). But look a little closer, and you’ll see Gurriel has been tattooing the ball. Nine of his 20 balls in play against the Yankees were hit 95 mph or harder.
Gurriel hit into outs on balls that, according to Statcast based on how hard and where they were hit, had expected batting averages of .820, .720, .620, .620, .550, .430, .420, and .410. He was robbed by Gio Urshela in Game 2, by Aaron Hicks in Game 3 and Game 4, then by Aaron Judge in Game 5, to name a few.
In the Game 6 clincher, Gurriel finally broke through with a three-run home run in the first inning, followed by a 101-mph single in the eighth. Factor that in with the fact that Gurriel has yet to strike out this postseason in 46 plate appearances, and he sure seems like somebody ready to bust out in a big way.

Howie Kendrick
Howie Kendrick is coming off of an absolute monster series in which he was named National League Division Series MVP at the age of 35. Including him on this list might be a bit obvious, but the Nationals are going to need him to carry that performance into the World series in order to stand a chance against the Monstars Astros.
Washington is the underdog in this matchup, but if players like Kendrick can continue to get on base with regularity, they have proven that they can capitalize on those opportunities, even against top-tier pitching.
It was Kendrick’s grand slam against the Dodgers that sent the Nationals to the championship series, seemingly against all odds, and his MVP performance that helped them sweep the Cardinals. So it seems almost expected that he will make a big contribution to this series to cap off one of the best seasons of his lengthy career.
— Sami Higgins
Anibal Sanchez
With all the talk surrounding the three-headed monster of Max Scherzer, Stephen Strasburg and Patrick Corbin, you have to remember that another pitcher who has come up huge for the Nationals has been Anibal Sanchez. It’s a testament to how strong those three have been throughout the playoffs that a guy who had everybody on “No-Hitter Alert” during the NLCS isn’t a lock to get a start in the World Series.
However, if the Nationals do turn to Sanchez then they can at least be confident that he’ll keep up the same level of pitching that the Nats and their fans have become used to during this postseason. Also, he’s got World Series experience under his belt — he went seven innings in Game 3 of the 2012 Fall Classic and only gave up two runs while striking out eight batters. The Detroit Tigers happened to lose that game to the San Francisco Giants, but it’s hard for a pitcher to lead his team to victory when said team scores a grand total of zero runs.
This is always the time of year where unsung heroes become the legends that you talk about in the future — even if it’s in the vein of “Hey, do you remember this guy?” If Anibal Sanchez is called upon again, maybe he’ll deliver a start that puts him in that particular territory.

Sri Lanka Blasts: Terrorism Targets Another Chinese Ally The recent, tragic Easter attack in the South Asian state of Sri Lanka – killing and injuring hundreds – follows a now unfortunately all too familiar formula. The New York Times has reported in its article, “What We Know and Don’t Know About the Sri Lanka Attacks,” that: The authorities in Sri Lanka said a little-known radical Islamist group, the National Thowheeth Jama’ath, carried out the attacks, with help from international militants. It is also reported that these extremists received assistance for the large-scale attack from foreign sponsors. The attack has put Sri Lanka on the map for many in the general public for the first time – but for all the wrong reasons. Countering OBOR: Divide and Destroy Sri Lanka has recently and decisively pivoted toward Beijing as a major partner of the One Belt, One Road (OBOR) initiative. This is despite Washington’s best efforts to prevent it from doing so. Consequently, extremists fuelled by Washington’s “clash of civilizations” have helped set the stage for growing violence between Sir Lanka’s majority Buddhists and its minority Muslim communities. The resulting violence serves as a medium for US coercion, destabilization, and intervention aimed at undermining Sri Lanka’s unity as a nation, and thus its viability as a partner for China. A nearly identical ploy has been used in nearby Myanmar where US-backed Buddhist extremists battle against US-Saudi-Qatari backed extremism rising from the ranks of the nation’s Muslim Rohingya minority. The resulting violence and growing humanitarian crisis – without coincidence – is unfolding in Myanmar’s Rakhine state – precisely where China is attempting to build another leg of its region-spanning OBOR initiative. Sri Lanka has signed on to OBOR in a big way, with major rail, port, airport, and highway projects all moving forward with Beijing’s support. Sri Lanka is also considered by Western policymakers as one of several among China’s strategic “String of Pearls,” strong points where China can secure maritime routes through waters traditionally dominated by the United States. These projects are derided across the Western media with headlines like the New York Times’ article, “How China Got Sri Lanka to Cough Up a Port” and France24’s article, “In Sri Lanka, the new Chinese Silk Road is a disappointment” – characterizing Washington’s growing opposition to China’s expanding influence across Asia – a region Washington has long presumed primacy over.Washington’s ability to compete with China regarding regional development is nonexistent. Instead, the US has tried to tempt nations like Sri Lanka with military aid.AFP in an article titled, “US gives Sri Lankan military US$39 million, countering China’s investments in strategic island,” would claim: The US funding for Sri Lanka is part of a US$300 million package Washington is setting aside for South and Southeast Asia to ensure a “free, open, and rules-based order in the Indo-Pacific region”. This “free, open, and rules-based order in the Indo-Pacific region,” is how the US regularly refers to US primacy in Asia throughout policy papers, diplomatic statements, and even political speeches. It is obvious that “military aid” can in no way compete with massive investments by China aimed at spurring national development through tangible infrastructure projects. America’s inability to compete openly and on equal economic footing has given way to political interference and even the use of violence. Sri Lanka’s Crisis Linked to US-Driven Crisis in Myanmar In Myanmar, the US is documented to have supported ethnic violence for years. The US all but installed current “State Counsellor” Aung San Suu Kyi into power along with her political party – the National League for Democracy (NLD) lined top to bottom with US State Department-funded “activists.“ Despite the liberal facade constructed by the Western media around Suu Kyi, her political party, and factions supporting both – rampant bigotry and racism pervades all three. Simultaneously, US-funded fronts posing as nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) have worked to co-opt and wield Rohingya communities as an equal but opposing political weapon while US-allies Saudi Arabia and Qatar have begun radicalizing and arming factions within Rohingya communities to carry out armed violence across Rakhine state. The resulting conflagration affords the US and its partners a pretext to intervene on an ever expanding scale – giving Washington access to and leverage over Myanmar to counter Beijing’s growing influence. And in precisely the same way the US has inserted itself into the heart of Myanmar’s political affairs – it is attempting to do so again in other Asian nations – including now Sri Lanka. Articles from across the Western media including the UK Independent’s 2018 article titled, “Violent Buddhist extremists are targeting Muslims in Sri Lanka,” even establish direct links between Myanmar’s and Sri Lanka’s growing conflicts. The article would admit (emphasis added): Currently, Sri Lanka’s most active Buddhist extremist group is Bodu Bala Sena (Buddhist power force, or BBS). BBS entered politics in 2012 with a Buddhist-nationalist ideology and agenda, its leaders claiming that Sri Lankans had become immoral and turned away from Buddhism. And whom does it blame? Sri Lankan Muslims. BBS’s rhetoric takes its cue from other populist anti-Muslim movements around the globe, claiming that Muslims are “taking over” the country thanks to a high birth rate. It also accuses Muslim organisations of funding international terrorism with money from Halal-certified food industries. These aren’t just empty words; in 2014, one of their anti-Muslim protest rallies in the southern town of Aluthgama ended with the death of four Muslims. BBS also has links to Myanmar’s extremist 969 movement. Led by nationalist monk Ashin Wirathu, who calls himself the “Burmese Bin Laden”, it is notorious for its hardline rhetoric against the Rohingya Muslim community. The West’s use of “Islamophobia” to sell its serial wars of aggression and to divide nations around the globe is a classic example of “divide and conquer. While the West no longer possesses any real means to “conquer” the nations it is now targeting – it does possess the capacity to use resulting divisions to destroy them. If the US cannot hold primacy over Asia – no one will. It is a “War on Peace” waged under the guise of a “War on Terrorism.” Sri Lanka appears to be but the latest victim of Washington’s now trademark “slash and burn” foreign policy – where it is fueling conflict to consume political orders that oppose its interests, and building upon the ashes ones that do serve them instead. In the coming days, weeks, and months – not only will more information emerge linking the recent attacks in Sri Lanka to Washington, Riyadh, and Doha’s global network of terrorism – but additional pressure will also be mounted upon Sri Lanka to divest from Beijing and pivot back toward the West. In reality – Sri Lanka’s violence is an artificial construct carried out by a tiny minority of extremists on either side of an equally artificial ethnoreligious divide. The nation and the region must unite in purpose – as peace and stability benefit them all – while chaos benefits only a handful of waning interests from afar.

Let’s Hold Our Frustration with the Jason Vargas Trade
Picture this:
October’s cool autumn breeze is upon us. The Phillies, somehow, have arrived in the NLDS. Their opponent, who will most certainly be the powerhouse Dodgers, look at the Phillies’ probable pitchers for the series. They see before their eager eyes the following names:
NOLA. ARRIETA (with bone spurs!). VARGAS. SMYLY.
That’s… quite the rotation.
Even with the Phillies right in the thick of the postseason picture as August approaches, the above scenario seems hard to imagine, I know.
And that’s probably why the Phillies’ trade for Jason Vargas yesterday underwhelmed so many of you, while it totally aggravated others.
Still, the way I see it, two things can be true in the wake of this deal, after the jump:
Vargas is an average starter.
Vargas is an upgrade to a rotation that has a 5.02 ERA since June 1. In fact, take out Aaron Nola’s 3.31 ERA over 11 starts since that date, and the rotation’s ERA balloons to 5.66 in 37 starts.
More recently, Phillies starters not named Aaron Nola have produced precisely one quality start since Zach Eflin went 6 IP while allowing three earned runs on June 29. Drew Smyly did it on July 21 in Pittsburgh. Again, that’s one quality start in a span of 16 games pitched by guys other than Nola.
Under that context, should the deal for Vargas, who comes to Philly at little cost with a 4.01 ERA and 1.27 WHIP this season, really upset so many people?
It probably shouldn’t, but the building frustrations from fans over the front office’s inability to procure pitching that is both healthy and talented have created an almost automatic response of negativity and skepticism about anything it does.
Basically, it’s dumping on the Phillies simply to dump on the Phillies because the poor track record precedes the logistics of the move. Maybe that’s fair and deserved. In fact, it is. They egregiously erred in their calculations of what their young staff could be, and they deserve ample criticism for that, but they have to do something now.
And they did.
In fact, what if I told you that Jason Vargas is basically having the same season as Dallas Keuchel? You know, the guy so many people in this city have agonized over since he signed with the Braves a couple of months ago. Because he is:
Keuchel: 3.86 ERA, 118 ERA +, 1.33 WHIP, 8.6 H/9, 7.0 K/9, 3.0 BB/9
Vargas: 4.01 ERA, 103 ERA +, 1.27 WHIP, 7.7 H/9, 7.7 K/9, 3.7 BB/9
Comparable numbers, yes?
According to MLB Statcast, Vargas is yielding a lower average exit velocity, expected batting average, and expected slugging percentage, as well as notably less hard contact than Keuchel this season.
If there’s one area that Keuchel is definitively the preferable option, it’s that he induces way more groundball contact (58.3%) than Vargas (40.5%), which is preferable at Citizens Bank Park.
I don’t write this to tell you that Vargas is the better player. All things being equal, I’d opt for Keuchel, but the greater point is that this actually *could be* a savvy bargain buy for the Phillies, particularly given just how poor the rotation has performed.
If that’s the only deadline move Matt Klentak has for us, then yeah, I don’t know. Not great. But in isolation, the deal makes some sense, so hold the frustration for at least another day or two.

Kapler Discusses Need For Improvement In 2019
By Steve Adams | September 27, 2018 at 11:03pm CDT
After a resurgent season in the Braves’ rotation, right-hander Anibal Sanchez tells Gabe Burns of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that he hopes to continue playing but hasn’t thought much about his future just yet. Sanchez, like many others, went through a lengthy free-agent odyssey last offseason and ultimately settled for a non-guaranteed deal with the Twins before being cut loose and signing a minor league deal with Atlanta. The 34-year-old adds that when he does eventually retire, he hopes to embark on a coaching career after taking a few years to spend time with his family. Sanchez has been arguably baseball’s best bargain, helping to a Braves’ staff with 130 2/3 innings of 2.96 ERA ball, 8.8 K/9, 2.7 BB/9 and a 44.7 percent ground-ball rate.
More from the division…
Dansby Swanson’s partially torn ligament in his left hand has opened the door for either Ryan Flaherty or Adam Duvall to make the Braves’ NLDS roster, Mark Bowman of MLB.com writes. Were Swanson healthy, then Charlie Culberson would be viewed as an important bench piece; however, if Swanson ruled unable to participate in the Division Series after being evaluated this weekend, Culberson would step into the team’s starting shortstop role. Duvall has hit terribly since being acquired from the Reds prior to the non-waiver trade deadline, but he’d give the team an extra right-handed bat on a bench that would otherwise be stacked with lefties. Bowman notes that both Flaherty and Duvall could get a few starts in the final few games — both played today — as the team evaluates its options.
The Phillies’ season is ending in a veritable free fall, but GM Matt Klentak recently gave skipper Gabe Kapler a vote of confidence. Kapler, however, spoke to Jim Salisbury of NBC Sports Philadelphia about his need to improve as a manager and a leader in 2019 and beyond, bluntly stating that he has “a lot of room to grow and improve.” To that end, Kapler is taking the unorthodox step of sending out an anonymous survey to the team’s coaches and others in the organization to evaluate his performance. Kapler candidly suggests that Phillies leadership “fell short” in preparing young players for the rigors of competing in a pennant chase, highlighting that as one of many areas the organization needs to improve moving forward.
Injured Mets outfielder Juan Lagares participated in sprinting exercises Thursday for the first time since tearing a plantar plate in his left foot back in May, writes Anthony DiComo of MLB.com. He’s aiming to play in the Dominican Winter League to help prep for the 2019 season. Lagares, considered one of the game’s premier defensive outfielders, has hit just .258/.299/.366 through a mere 961 plate appearances since signing a contract extension that guaranteed him $23MM back in April 2015. Of course, he’s totaled 29 Defensive Runs Saved in barely over 2,000 innings in that time, which speaks to his excellence with the glove. Lagares has been an oft-mentioned trade candidate in recent years, though with $9.5MM still guaranteed on that deal ($9MM 2019 salary plus a $500K buyout on a $9.5MM option for 2020), it’s tough to imagine much demand in him this offseason, barring some salary relief.

Hyun-jin Ryu has turned into the Dodgers’ hottest ace
Left-hander hasn’t allowed a run in his last 31 innings
Hyun-jin Ryu has become a master of control, and the veteran left-hander has been a force at the top of a strong and deep Dodgers starting rotation.
Ryu walked a batter on Sunday, issuing a free pass to Reds third baseman Eugenio Suarez in the first inning in Cincinnati. That in itself was news, since Ryu hardly walks anyone these days. It was just the fourth walk in 59⅓ innings for Ryu this season, to go with 59 strikeouts.
Keeping people off base has been paramount for Ryu, whose active scoreless streak of 31 innings is the longest in baseball this season. Ryu lasted seven innings on Sunday against the Reds, his fifth straight start of at least seven frames. He hasn’t allowed more than two runs in any of his nine starts this season.
Ryu leads baseball with a 1.52 ERA this season, and his 1.78 ERA since the start of 2018 is also No. 1.
The key has been the command for Ryu, who posted a career-best 4.6% walk rate in 2018 and has followed that up with a minuscule 1.9% rate this year, the best in baseball. He has issued zero or one unintentional walk in 23 of his last 24 starts. Combine that with a strikeout rate of 27.4% that is also a career high for Ryu, and the Dodgers have another ace atop their rotation.
It was Ryu who got the start in Game 1 of the NLDS in 2018 over Clayton Kershaw, though that was more a function of timing more than anything, allowing the Dodgers to keep their top two starters on a somewhat regular schedule. Kershaw started Game 1 in both the NLCS and World Series, his usual position.
But that Ryu was even a viable option is a testament to how remarkable the left-hander’s reemergence has been.
Ryu was in the upper echelon of National League starters in his first two seasons (2013-14) after coming over from South Korea. Surgery to repair a torn labrum in his shoulder wiped out 2015 for Ryu, as well as the bulk of 2016. He made one start that July but was then shut down and had arthroscopic elbow surgery that cut another season far too short.
His comeback as a serviceable starter in 2017 — 3.77 ERA, 110 ERA+ in 126 innings — was a major success after two years of rehab, but he was disappointed after getting left off the Dodgers’ postseason roster that year.
Since then Ryu has been one of the best pitchers in baseball, when he’s on the mound at least. Ryu posted a 1.97 ERA in 2018, but was limited to just 15 starts after missing three months with a torn groin muscle. This year Ryu was on the disabled list again with a groin strain, but nowhere near as serious, basically missing just one trip through the rotation.
When on the mound, Ryu is pitching like an ace. He’s averaging 6.59 innings per start this season, second in MLB to his teammate Kershaw (6.61).
Dodgers starting pitchers as a group are second in the majors in ERA (2.99), fourth in FIP (3.57) and fourth in K-BB rate (19.3%). Thanks in large part to Ryu’s excellence.
Ryu could have been a free agent after last season, but accepted the Dodgers’ qualifying offer of $17.9 million in 2019. So far it’s looking like a steal for Los Angeles. Ryu could be one of the prized free agents this winter, assuming teams decide to spend again, and won’t be shackled by the qualifying offer, which would require a signing team to forfeit a draft pick. That penalty, coupled with the asking price, could be prohibitive — just ask Dallas Keuchel, who still hasn’t found a 2019 home, and likely won’t until after the June draft — but without it Ryu should still see a hefty payday this offseason.

Hogy áll most a katalógus?
A cégeknek szolgáltatóknak biztosÃtunk ingyenes megjelenési lehetÅséget!
Most amikor megmutatjuk nektek 3-400 közötti, fÅleg multi bolt hálózat szerepel a katalógusunkban.
Mit nyújtunk a szolgáltatóknak, cégeknek?
LegfÅképp ingyenes megjelenést. Katalógusunk célja a használhatóság. Ezért mindenki ingyenesen bekerülhet a katalógusba.
100%-ban onlline adminisztrációs felületet! A cégek maguk kezelhetik saját adataikat egy online felületen keresztül.
Tulajdon átvételi lehetÅséget. Ha már szerepel a cég adatbázisunkban a szolgáltató átveheti a szerkesztési jogot (teljesen online folyamat!)
Kiemelt megjelenést ingyen! Mindössze link cserét kérünk érte!
LehetÅséget hÃrek, akciók, események és más értékes vevÅ csalogató információk feltöltésére és kezelésére.
Hirdetési, kiemelési lehetÅséget.
Még mindig ezt olvasod?
Mindegy hogy felhasználó vagy szolgáltató vagy! Klikkelj, böngész, próbáld ki és regisztrálj!
