How NIPT Works in IVF: Key Considerations for Fertility Treatments
Tumblr media
As with any pregnancy, IVF pregnancies come with their own set of unique challenges, particularly in the area of genetic screening. One such advanced tool that has gained prominence in recent years is Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT). This test provides critical genetic insights, offering parents the opportunity to detect potential chromosomal abnormalities early on in pregnancy. For couples in London who have conceived through IVF, understanding how NIPT works and its specific role in fertility treatments is crucial. This blog will explore how the NIPT test in the UK functions, its importance for IVF pregnancies, and the key considerations to keep in mind before opting for this test.
Why is NIPT Important for IVF Pregnancies?
For IVF pregnancies, genetic testing becomes even more critical. IVF procedures may involve older eggs, sperm from donors, or pre-existing genetic conditions in either parent. NIPT can provide vital information to detect any chromosomal abnormalities early on. As IVF pregnancies often face unique risks, understanding these risks through NIPT is a reassuring step. This test reduces the need for invasive procedures like amniocentesis, lowering the potential for complications during pregnancy.
NIPT in IVF with Donor Eggs or Sperm
One of the key considerations for IVF using donor eggs or sperm is the genetic material passed to the fetus. NIPT becomes essential in this scenario, as it screens for genetic abnormalities in pregnancies where the egg or sperm is from a donor. Many parents prefer this non-invasive approach to gain confidence in the pregnancy’s health, ensuring any chromosomal issues are detected as early as possible. Early detection of genetic conditions allows families to plan further care and make informed decisions.
Tumblr media
The Role of NIPT in Multiple Pregnancies
IVF can often lead to multiple pregnancies, such as twins or triplets. In such cases, the NIPT test for pregnancy may face additional challenges, as it can be harder to distinguish between the genetic material of multiple fetuses. Despite these challenges, advances in NIPT technology have improved its accuracy, making it a useful tool in IVF-related multiple pregnancies. Consulting with a healthcare professional is essential to assess how effective NIPT will be in such cases.
Key Considerations Before Opting for NIPT in IVF
Before undergoing the NIPT gender test during an IVF pregnancy, there are several considerations to keep in mind. First, while NIPT is highly accurate for detecting chromosomal abnormalities, it is still a screening test, not a diagnostic one. Positive results may require further testing, like chorionic villus sampling (CVS) or amniocentesis, for confirmation. Second, timing is important. Most doctors recommend NIPT between weeks 10 and 14 for accurate results. Lastly, it’s important to discuss with your fertility specialist whether NIPT is the best option for your IVF pregnancy, based on your specific medical history.
Final Thoughts
NIPT has become a valuable tool in managing IVF pregnancies, offering early and non-invasive insights into the genetic health of the fetus. For those undergoing fertility treatments, NIPT provides an additional layer of reassurance, allowing families to prepare for potential challenges in the future. Understanding the Statistics Behind NIPT (Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing)
Tumblr media
Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT) is rapidly becoming one of the most trusted methods for prenatal screening. As expectant parents navigate the complexities of pregnancy, having access to accurate, non-invasive testing methods is crucial. NIPT allows for early detection of potential chromosomal abnormalities, offering parents peace of mind without posing any risk to the mother or the baby. In this blog, we will explore the key statistics surrounding the NIPT screening Test, exploring its accuracy, success rates, and why it is becoming an essential part of pregnancy care across the UK, particularly in London.
Accuracy Rates of NIPT: What the Numbers Say
One of the most compelling reasons parents opt for NIPT is its high accuracy rate. For Down syndrome (trisomy 21), NIPT has a detection rate of over 99%. For other chromosomal conditions like Edwards syndrome (trisomy 18) and Patau syndrome (trisomy 13), the accuracy is around 97-99%. These statistics highlight how reliable NIPT is compared to traditional screening methods, which often have higher false-positive rates.
False Positives and Negatives: A Closer Look
Despite its high accuracy, NIPT is a screening test, not a diagnostic one. This means that while it significantly reduces the number of false positives and negatives, they can still occur. The false-positive rate for NIPT is less than 0.5%, a significant improvement over older methods like the combined test, which has a false-positive rate of around 5%. However, further diagnostic tests may be recommended if the NPT lab test results indicate potential issues.
NIPT Usage Statistics in the UK
NIPT is gaining popularity across the UK, particularly in London, where access to advanced healthcare facilities is more widespread. According to recent data, over 80% of pregnant women in the UK are now offered NIPT gender tests as part of their prenatal care. Among women who undergo NIPT, the vast majority report satisfaction with the test due to its non-invasive nature and the valuable insights it provides about their baby’s health.
Adoption Rates in London
In London alone, private clinics offering NIPT have seen a 60% rise in demand in the last five years. The test is widely used among expectant parents who prefer a safe, reliable, and early screenin method. This growth reflects the increasing awareness and trust in NIPT, driven by its strong track record.
NIPT for Twins: How the Statistics Differ
The NIPT Test is also available for women expecting twins, though the statistics differ slightly. The detection rates for chromosomal abnormalities remain high, but the false-positive rate increases slightly in twin pregnancies. For twin pregnancies, the overall detection rate for Down syndrome is around 95-98%. While still highly reliable, the results may require additional follow-up tests for confirmation.
Why Should You Consider NIPT?
NIPT provides peace of mind to expectant parents by offering early and accurate insights into their baby's health. The high accuracy rate, non-invasive nature, and increasing usage make it a favored choice among healthcare providers and parents alike. By understanding the statistics behind the NIPT Test for pregnancy, you can make a more informed decision during your pregnancy journey.
In conclusion, the statistics behind NIPT showcase its effectiveness, reliability, and growing popularity in the UK, particularly in London. With detection rates exceeding 99% for major chromosomal abnormalities and a false-positive rate below 0.5%, NIPT offers an unparalleled screening option for expectant parents. If you’re considering NIPT for your pregnancy, visit Concepto Diagnostics, a trusted NIPT test clinic in the UK.

Heill dagr, heilir dags synir,                            heil nótt oc nipt! …
- Sigrdrífumál (The Lay of Sigrdrifa)
Hail to the day! Hail to the sons of day! hail to night and her kin! … Long I slept, long was I sleeping … Who has lifted from me my pallid coercion?
At the climax of Siegfried, an astonishing emotional and dramatic climax within Richard Wagner’s Ring, Brünnhilde at last awakens from her enchanted sleep. Her ecstatic song quotes directly from the Poetic Edda, combining lines from the first three stanzas of the Old Norse poem Sigrdrífumál (The Lay of Sigrdrifa).
Here’s how Wagner renders it:
Heil dir, Sonne                             Hail, sun! Heil dir, Licht!                              hail, light! Heil dir, leuchtender Tag!       hail, radiant day! Lang war mein Schlaf;              Long was my sleep; ich bin erwacht.                          I am awakened. Wer ist der Held,                        Who is the hero der mich erweckt?                    who awakened me?
Siegfried, Act III, sc. 3.
Richard Wagner saw that the simplicity and intensity of the poem’s language at this transcendent moment could not be improved upon. Brünnhilde awakes to her hero, the man who knows no fear, to a new world in which — deprived of her divinity — a new human existence of love and glory seems possible for her and for Siegfried.
Tumblr media
In his masterpiece, Wagner synthesised stories from across the Old Norse-Icelandic collection of poems known as the Poetic Edda. He had long been mulling over an opera based on the German epic, Das Nibelungenlied, but he realised that he needed more material and more inspiration. Wagner knew where he might find it: “I must study these Old Norse eddic poems of yours; they are far more profound than our medieval poems,” he remarked to the Danish composer Niels Gade in 1846. In 1851, when he got his hands on Karl Simrock’s edition of the Poetic Edda, Wagner finally saw how to develop his ideas about the death of Siegfried into a cycle and he also discovered the rhythms of traditional Germanic alliterative verse which he would use for his libretto.
The first poem of the Edda, “The Seeress’s Prophecy” selectively narrates the history of the universe, from Creation, when the world rises up out of the sea, to Ragna rök or Götterdämmerung, when the world ends in ice and fire. Wagner starts his opera about halfway through “The Seeress’s Prophecy”, where the Seeress allusively notes how moral corruption comes among the gods when they betray the giant who rebuilt the walls of Asgard for them. Interwoven in Das Rheingold with the gods’ bad faith is the tale of the Rheingold from the later heroic poems: the cursed treasure-hoard which brings strife in its wake, epitomised by the ring Andvari’s Jewel.
Tumblr media
Wagner used a prose retelling of the heroic legends associated with Sigmund for Die Walküre, themes known to the poets of the Edda, but not recounted by them. Siegfried takes up the Edda once again with the troubled relationship of the young hero and Mime (Regin in Norse), the dragon fight, and the meeting with the valkyrie. In the Edda, Sigurd learns wisdom from the valkyrie: how to use runic magic for healing and protection, to ensure a calm sea, and to make fetters fall from the feet. The deliriously joyful union of hero and valkyrie is lost in a gap in the manuscript. When the story resumes, we are already deep into the betrayal and heartbreak caused by Sigurd’s forgetfulness — thanks to the magic potion given him at his in-law’s court — and the destruction of that sublime love through the hero’s innocence and Brynhild’s vengefulness.
Wagner follows German tradition for Siegfried’s death: stabbed in the back beside the Rhine, his one vulnerable spot revealed by Brünnhilde. The Poetic Edda gives fuller weight to the feelings of Sigurd’s wife. The two queens quarrel and Gudrun flaunts her knowledge of the truth: it was Sigurd who crossed the flame-wall to claim Brynhild for Gunnar. Wagner understood how the story of Siegfried and Brünnhilde must end, in immolation and the destruction of the compromised order of the gods. The world ends in fire as the waters rise and the Rhine overflows. When the ring returns to the Rhinemaidens, the circle is completed, ready — as the “Seeress’s Prophecy” suggests — for rebirth.
Tumblr media
It’s more than 200 years since Wagner’s birth, and about 144 years since the Ring Cycle was performed for the first time in Bayreuth and shortly afterwards in London. More than any other artist before or since, Wagner saw to the heart of eddic themes, saw the inevitable compromises and double-dealing that divinity must make to accommodate desire and law. He saw how passion transfigures and destroys, how treasure and the torsions of power eat into the soul and bring tragedy to birth. He ended his cycle with Ragna rök and the deaths of his protagonists; he did not wish to follow Gudrun through the terrible cycles of marriage and vengeance that follow the loss of her first husband. The Poetic Edda manuscript ends with the last stand of Gudrun’s only remaining sons, sword in hands perched on the corpses of the slain like eagles on a bough. They die avenging Sigurd’s daughter Svanhildr, whose white-gold hair was, on her husband’s orders, trampled into the mud by wild horses.

>> video OG  M /-73kg eliminations (NHK) >> video OG  F /-57kg eliminations (NHK)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Guess what happened ?
Onwezenlijk. Proficiat Driton Kuka.

How Often Is NIPT Wrong for Down Syndrome?
Tumblr media
Non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) has completely changed the prenatal screening landscape in recent years by providing pregnant parents with a more accurate and safe way to screen for chromosomal abnormalities in their unborn child. One of the most common worries is the accuracy of NIPT results, especially in cases with Down syndrome. How frequently is the NIPT inaccurate, and what causes the mistakes that do occur occasionally?
You will get all your answers in today's blog. So, stay tuned for this post till the end.
How can the accuracy of the NIPT test in the UK be impacted?
The accuracy of NIPT can also be impacted by biological variables and technical constraints, such as a low fetal fraction.
Expectant parents should understand that although the NIPT is an effective tool, it is a screening test and not a diagnostic one. If the NIPT findings show a high risk for Down syndrome, further diagnostic testing, such as amniocentesis or CVS, is advised. Although these intrusive examinations offer a conclusive diagnosis, they are not without danger.
The field of prenatal screening tests in the UK is always changing, and new research is being done to improve the NIPT's accuracy. To reduce false positives and negatives, researchers are experimenting with new technologies and improving algorithms.
What does the research show?
Research shows that the NIPT has a sensitivity rate of more than 99%, making it a very accurate test for identifying Down syndrome. This suggests that NIPT is incredibly successful in detecting Down syndrome-affected fetuses. The false positive rate, or the frequency with which NIPT falsely suggests a high risk for Down syndrome when the fetus is, in fact, unaffected, is of greater concern.
With the NIPT Test in the UK for Down syndrome, the false positive rate is comparatively low, usually between 0.1% and 0.3%. Even though these figures can sound comforting, it's important to realize that false positives might cause needless worry and perhaps invasive treatments like chorionic villus sampling (CVS) or amniocentesis. There is a little but inevitable risk of consequences from these invasive tests, including miscarriage.
Tumblr media
Conclusion
NIPT is a fantastic development in prenatal screening; however, it is not perfect. Although false positives for Down syndrome are rare, NIPT has a high sensitivity for the condition. It is important for pregnant parents to discuss the results with healthcare practitioners and to understand the limits. It's crucial to talk to a healthcare professional from Health Care Solutions UK about the reliability, restrictions, and possible results of NIPT.

Secure a Healthy Pregnancy with NIPT Testing
Tumblr media
Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT) is a revolutionary screening method that can significantly contribute to ensuring a healthy pregnancy. Unlike traditional methods, the Nipt test in the UK is a safe and reliable way to screen for chromosomal abnormalities early in pregnancy. This test utilizes cell-free fetal DNA circulating in the mother's blood to detect potential genetic concerns with high accuracy.
Here’s how NIPT testing can help:
Early Detection of Genetic Conditions: NIPT analyzes fragments of fetal DNA in the mother's bloodstream to detect genetic conditions such as Down syndrome (trisomy 21), trisomy 18, and trisomy 13. These conditions can affect the health and development of the baby. Detecting them early allows parents to make informed decisions about their pregnancy and prepare for any necessary medical care or interventions.
Accuracy and reliability: NIPT has a high accuracy rate for identifying genetic conditions, typically around 99% for Down syndrome. This accuracy provides expectant parents with confidence in the results, reducing unnecessary anxiety and potential follow-up testing.
Non-Invasive Nature: One of the significant advantages of NIPT is that it is non-invasive. The test requires only a simple blood draw from the mother, posing no risk to the fetus. This contrasts sharply with invasive procedures such as amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling (CVS), which carry a small risk of miscarriage.
Early Peace of Mind: NIPT can be performed as early as 10 weeks into the pregnancy, providing early peace of mind for expectant parents. Early detection allows them more time to consider their options and plan for the future.
Who Should Consider NIPT?
NIPT is recommended for pregnant women who are at higher risk of having a baby with a genetic condition. This includes:
Women over the age of 35.
Those with a previous pregnancy are affected by a genetic condition.
Couples with a family history of genetic disorders.
Women with abnormal ultrasound findings.
Those with positive results from other prenatal screening tests.
Women with certain medical conditions, such as diabetes.
Wrapping it up, NIPT testing plays a crucial role in securing a healthy pregnancy by providing accurate and early detection of genetic conditions, all while being non-invasive and safe. For expectant parents seeking peace of mind and the best possible care, NIPT testing at Concepto Diagnostics is the right choice. Should You Have a Down Syndrome Test?
No one can tell you whether or not you should have a Down syndrome test during pregnancy, but what your doctor or sonographer can do is to give you the information you need to make your own choice. For example, we can tell you about the different types of Down syndrome test that are available and what the results might mean.
Tumblr media
What Tests are Available?
Several different types of Down syndrome test are available. Understanding what the tests involve and what they can reveal can help you to decide if they are right for you.
Nuchal scan: An ultrasound offered to all pregnant women, including a measurement of the nuchal fold that can tell you if your baby is a high risk of certain chromosomal abnormalities such as Down’s syndrome.
NIPT: Non-invasive prenatal testing, a blood test that assesses the chance of chromosomal abnormalities, it is usually recommended if the nuchal scan revealed that there might be a problem.
Amniocentesis or CVS: An invasive test that can be used to diagnose Down syndrome for certain if the other tests have suggested your baby is likely to be affected, but which poses some risks.
What Are the Risk Factors for Down Syndrome?
You may want to consider the chances of having a baby with Down syndrome when deciding whether to have the screening tests. Chromosomal abnormalities can happen to anyone by chance, but you are more likely to be affected if
You are older parents. The chances of chromosomal problems occurring is higher over the age of 35, but most babies born to parents over this age will be completely healthy.
You have had a child or pregnancy affected by Down syndrome before. You may want to talk to a genetic counsellor to understand the risks of it happening again.
Do You Want to Know?
As well as considering the facts, it is also important to think about how you feel and what you would do if your baby was affected. For example, if you would want to continue with the pregnancy anyway, you might not want to risk invasive tests to diagnose Down syndrome. However, you might still want to have the nuchal scan or NIPT so that you can be prepared to provide the care your baby will need.

UK politicians call for action against sex-selective abortion

UK politicians call for action against sex-selective abortion
London, England, Sep 18, 2018 / 02:30 pm (CNA).- British politicians have called for a review of the availability of early sex detection tests for pregnant women. The proposal was made by Labour Members of Parliament and prompted by concerns that the tests are leading to sex-selective abortions.
The MP’s expressed particular concern that women, especially those in the UK’s Asian communities, are being pressured or coerced into having an abortion if they are pregnant with a girl.
Labour MP Naz Shah said it was “morally wrong” that women are using the Non-Invasive Prenatal Test (NIPT) to determine whether or not they are pregnant with a girl, and then scheduling an abortion based on the result. Shah, the Shadow Secretary of State for Women and Equalities, called for a government investigation into the practice.
The call for government intervention against the practice comes almost 18 months after the Nuffield Council on Bioethics, a government-funded think tank, found that NIPT promoted sex-selective abortions.
The NIPT consists of a blood test given to the mother at the ninth week of pregnancy, at which time the baby’s DNA is detectable in their mother’s bloodstream.
The test is currently administered by the UK’s National Health Service to screen for genetic conditions, such as Down syndrome. Pro-life advocates have already warned that the test is used to “screen out” children with Down’s syndrome and other conditions. Currently in the UK, 90% of children with a prenatal diagnosis of Down’s syndrome are aborted.
While the gender can be detected by the NIPT, the NHS does not share this information with parents unless there is a specific need to do so. While the test is not made available by the NHS expressly for gender screening, it is privately available to parents and can be purchased at a clinic for about £150-£200.
In the London suburb of Slough, which has a substantial South Asian population, the tests are roadside advertisements explicitly market the test as being able to determine the sex of the child. This, said Shah, is where the government should consider stepping in.
"NIPT screenings should be used for their intended purpose, to screen for serious conditions and Down's syndrome,” said Shah.
"The government needs to look into this exploitative practice and enforce appropriate restrictions."
Slough’s Labour MP Tan Dhesi agreed with Shah, and pointed out that some Asian countries have “made huge strides in tackling this social evil,” particularly when the government has banned prenatal gender tests. “In the UK I think we need to be doing likewise, with regards to the private sector as well,” said Dhesi.
Prenatal sex detection has been illegal in India since 1994.
The calls follow a BBC has report on online forums where women have discussed how NIPT results will directly inform their decision to continue with their pregnancy or to have an abortion.
"I need a son to heal me…,” wrote one woman. “My only bet is NIPT followed by continuation, only if it's a boy."
Clare McCarthy, spokesperson for Right To Life UK, told CNA that she agrees with the need for government action to address the problem of sex-selective abortion.
"This BBC investigation adds to a growing body of evidence that we have a sex-selective abortion problem here in the UK,” said McCarthy.
“It’s time for the Government to stop denying there is a problem here and take urgent action to put in place a ban on sex-selective abortion.”
McCarthy, however, said it was “seriously concerning” that the same Labour MPs who are opposed to sex-selective abortion also are in favor of removing all legal restrictions on abortion, “under the guise of ‘decriminalisation.’”
If this were happen, McCarthy told CNA that “the evidence from overseas shows that this could make our sex-selective abortion problem even worse.”
While sex-selection abortion is technically illegal in the United Kingdom, women may give other reasons as for why they want to have an abortion.
In England, Scotland, and Wales, abortion must be signed off by two doctors and cannot be performed later than 24 weeks gestation. After 24 weeks of pregnancy the grounds upon which an abortion can be sought narrow significantly.
In Northern Ireland, abortion is illegal, but it is legal for a Northern Irish woman to travel to England, Scotland, or Wales for an abortion.
