L'Ammasso del Presepe noto anche come Ammasso Alveare o con le sigle di catalogo M 44 o NGC 2632 – è un brillante ammasso aperto visibile nella costellazione del Cancro. È uno dei più vicini al sistema solare e contiene una ricca popolazione di stelle, più ampia di quelle di altri ammassi aperti vicini. In un cielo nitido l'ammasso appare a occhio nudo come un oggetto nebuloso; definito da Tolomeo "la massa nebulosa nel seno del Cancro", fu il primo oggetto che Galileo osservò con il suo cannocchiale. Le sue componenti più luminose sono di magnitudine6 e 7 e sono perfettamente visibili con un binocoloanche dai centri urbani. L'età e il moto proprio sono paragonabili a quelli delle Iadi, suggerendo che entrambi gli ammassi abbiano un'origine comune; sia il Presepe sia le Iadi contengono inoltre delle giganti rosse e delle nane bianche, che rappresentano gli ultimi stadi dell'evoluzione stellare, più un gran numero di stelle di sequenza principale di classe A, F, G, K e M. Stime sulla sua distanza forniscono cifre che variano fra i 160 e i 187 parsec (550-610 anni luce),mentre sull'età, stimata sui 580 milioni di anni, vi è maggiore accordo. OSSERVAZIONE Il Presepe è uno degli oggetti più facili da osservare: si individua infatti anche ad occhio nudo, in un cielo discreto; per trovarlo si fa spesso riferimento a due stelle molto brillanti, Regolo e Polluce: il Presepe si trova a circa metà strada fra le due stelle. Alle latitudini boreali è presente nel cielo serale da fine dicembre a tutto giugno e si mostra molto alto in cielo; dall'emisfero australe risulta invece meno evidente, ma la facilità di individuazione e di osservazione resta inalterata. Ad occhio nudo si distingue come una macchia chiara e dall'aspetto nebuloso o granulare; sotto cieli assolutamente perfetti e con l'aiuto di un'ottima vista si possono talvolta individuare 2-3 minutissimi astri, ma su un fondo che resta sempre nebuloso e indefinito. Concordiem Borealis by Stephen Saber This collection of DSOs and doublestars unifies the Astronomical League’s Messier, Bino Deepsky, Caldwell (the 76 most northern), and Double Star targets as well as the RASC’s 110 Finest NGC Objects (90 of which are Herschel 400s). M44 - The Beehive Cluster (Praesepe) Image Information Quoted from SEDS: Known to Aratos 260 B.C. This famous cluster, Messier 44 (M44, NGC 2632), is also called Praesepe (Latin for "manger"), or the Beehive cluster. It is also one of the objects easily visible to the naked eye, and thus known since prehistoric times. Some ancient lore is associated with it: Greeks and Romans saw this "nebula" as the manger (Greek: Phatne) associated with two asses who eat from it, Asellus Borealis, the Northern Ass (Gamma Cnc; Spectral type A1 V, mag 4.7, distance 155 ly) and Asellus Australis, the Southern Ass (Delta Cnc; Spectrum K0 III, mag 3.9, distance 155 ly). Erathosthenes reported that these were the asses on which the gods Dionysos and Silenus rode into the battle against the Titans, who were frightened by the animals' braying so that the gods won. As a reward, the asses were put in sky together with Phatne. Aratos (260 B.C.) mentioned this object as "Little Mist", Hipparchus (130 B.C.) included this object in his star catalog and called it "Little Cloud" or "Cloudy Star." Ptolemy mentions it as one of seven "nebulae" he noted in his Almagest, and describes it as "The Nebulous Mass in the Breast (of Cancer)". According to Burnham, it appeared on Johann Bayer's chart (about 1600 A.D.) as "Nubilum" ("Cloudy" Object). This image is compiled from 17 - 15 minute non-filtered images. A total of 4.25 hours of data was used. All data was acquired using MaxImDl/CCD version 5 using ACP.

One of the brightest objects in Messier's catalog, the Beehive Cluster is an open cluster of stars known since antiquity. Ptolemy observed it, and it was one of the first objects that Galileo observed with his telescope. The Ancient Greeks and Romans saw this object as a manger from which two donkeys are eating; this is why the Beehive is often called Praesepe, which is Latin for "manger."
The Beehive Cluster contains about 1,000 "bees", two of which have planets orbiting around them. However, this are not Earth-like planets, but rather "hot Jupiters", gas giants that are very very close to their host star.
