Joe Lillard meets Joe Lewis at his training camp in Pompton Lakes, N.J. on December 10, 1935. Two years earlier, on December 3, 1933, Lillard became the last black man to play in the NFL. His sole crime, according to the all white league owners was his refusal to "live, walk, and breath in a manner that did not bespeak supremacy." Lillard, a former star running back at the University of Oregon, would play for a variety of semi-pro teams, including the New York Brown Bombers, a team named after Lewis and coached by the legendary Fritz Pollard, who had been the first black player in league history. For good measure, the "Midnight Express" would also pitch five years in the Negro Leagues. He would retire from professional sports in 1941 and spent his later years working at a sporting goods store. He died in Astoria, Queens on September 18, 1978 after suffering a stroke.
