PLE Adventure
This is a blog entry to help PLE takers studying for the boards.
It is in the mindset. That powerful thinking that you will pass and so does your whole batch. I was very lucky to pass the PLE September 2019 together with my batchmates. We got that elusive 100%, we were ranked 1st together with Cebu Institute of Medicine and Ateneo School of Medicine and Public Health. It was that idea of “No One Being Left Behind” and that mantra at the beginning of your review, will help each one of you. You will pull each other up, push each other to their limits and together you will all emerge victorious because you were in it to win it, TOGETHER.
First things first. How will you go about the studying process? Of course, you need a plan. My plan was of course is getting a slot from Topnotch Medical Review coz everyone is saying that they are the best. They have the highest percentile of passers. Plus, my boyfriend also suggested that to me. Knowing how he does not like studying and yet he passed, speaks volumes haha so choose well. You may opt to study on your own (I have batchmates who did), go with your medical school’s review (we had a refresher but I did not go) or other review centers (UST and Cracking the Boards). But for me, why risk it? This is not the NMAT where I could risk getting a low score (I studied by myself). This is it. It is now or never. Failure is not an option for me. I have been very lucky for every major examination I took (MaSci entrance exam, UPCAT, ACET, USTET, DLSUET, PLM CAT, NMAT) I have always passed. And for this exam, I could not rely on luck alone. I need a solid strategy and Topnotch did strategize well for all of us.
I enrolled in Topnotch and realized that there are a lot of good teachers out there. Different strategies being used in different medical schools. Different materials for studying. Different learning styles and teaching styles. I was amazed. My 2 day surgery lecture by Dr. Loubomir Antonio was enough to cram all 2 years of medschool surgery! The Anatomy lectures of Dr. Vibar were so helpful and organized! Biochemistry became easier and understandable because of THE Ronibats! And my favorite was Ian De Vera’s pedia lecture. The teachers were so good and they imported only the best from different schools. Listen and don’t take the lectures for granted even if you hear poor reviews from other classes! Attend and show up! They are high yield!
I rented a condo at San Juan together with 3 roomies from UERM (recommended by my college friend). They were so dedicated in studying so I was motivated! We did not chat much but instead focused on studying. I think that also helped because less distraction. I walk for 5 minutes to go to the lecture proper. We start at around 8am per session and usually finish by 7pm or depending on the schedule. The schedule was very flexible so you cannot really plot a definite plan.
MY ROUTINE (Lecture Days): Wake up at 5am, fast shower, fast breakfast + prepare food for class, walk to the lecture place (arrive an hour before so that I can get good seats) then take morning coffee courtesy of topnotch, LECTURE, go home/grocery, dinner, answer 1 chapter of Robbins Pathology (3 hours), re-read lecture for the day til around 2am x repeat til cramming fest. aka PEARLS.
MY ROUTINE (Rest Days): Wake up at 10am, shower, STUDY, eat while STUDYING, sleep at 4am then repeat. Just read and read and read. That is all that is asked of you during these months. You focus and study so that you won’t be that person who won’t be happy at the wee hours of the morning when they release the list of passers. You study so you will have a face to show to your alma mater. So that you can attend the Thanksgiving mass. So that you can have your face placed in a tarpaulin. You study, and you study hard and smart.
Quality Time: Sometimes, I do go on study dates because my boyfriend would surprise me by coming all the way from Manila during weekdays! We go to Rob Mag or to the nearby cafe to study. He would then bring me back to the condo and he will be on duty the next day. That’s how we maintained our relationship for almost 2 months. He was preparing for his Residency In Service Exam while I prepare for the boards. *see my IG stories for my board dates hihi* My parents were very supportive as well. They visited me every week and we would go to different churches (Sta Clara, St Jude, Manaoag) and eat at Rob Mag or SM Sta Mesa whenever I need unwinding aka near breakdown. Because I swear there were moments where I would literally just cry and sulk. They would go to my condo ASAP whenever this would happen and for that I am very thankful to have the most supportive parents and boyfriend. Whenever I am in LP, my bestie would also join me to study.
My resources: Topnotch reviewers (read it around 2-3x first reading for highlighting and fast reading, 2nd during the lecture, third reading for focused review), Robbins Review of Pathology (answer then check the rationale at the back), USMLE (to fully grasp the correlation between the anatomy, physiology, pathology, pharmacology per system it is discussed in such a way that you would understand it better), IM Platinum (fast checking), Surgery Platinum, Legal Med Question Bank (during mini breaks), FM Platinum, PLM OB transes (best transes!).
At about a week before the actual exam, I went home to Las Pinas to focus so everyday I would go out and study at the nearby Starbs (which is my go to place here in LP). I would start at 10am until 8pm then continue cramming at home. By this time I am already reading the Pearls Handout and Q&As. My clerkship group would hold Q&A nights where anyone would ask questions and anyone could answer. It was our way to support each other and to check on what we might have missed that seemed important to others.
Topnotch would also coach you on how to properly answer the questions plus feed you and give you motivation. They won’t give you leakages but they promise to take care of you so that you won’t think of anything else but to study.
Board Exam things to bring: your Notice of Admission, Mongol pencils, Stabilo/Staedtler eraser, Ballpoint pen, snacks aka empanada and candies and water, reviewers (for peace of mind when you check answers haha I know it’s not healthy but well...), clear envelope (1 big, 1 small -- trust me!), fan, paracetamol.
So there you have it, my sort of guide and story telling of my boards experience. If you want to ask me for specifics, you can message me here! Remember that this is the last hurdle before you reach your dreams (although residency is so tough!). Pass the boards and you will have the freedom to do as you desire. May it be pursuing residency, work as Doctor to the Barrio, go moonlighting, or starting a family, when you get that MD after your name for real, you can be anyone you want.
That’s it for now. I’ll go on duty in a few hours. Keep safe. Wear masks.

NSTP Module 3: Disaster Risk Reduction and Management
My community is located right beside SM Sta Mesa and also near the Pasig River. I’d say that we are on the boundary of Manila, Quezon City, and San Juan. From what I’ve learned from our administration office, some issues confronting the community are about trash segregation, smoking in public places, and people who owns too much cars that there isn’t enough space for it. I live inside a subdivision, so I can’t really say or notice what are the other issues are in our specific barangay. Nevertheless, these issues should be given attention to since we are the residents and we are to take care of our community. Trash segregation is important because some items can be classified into biodegradable, non-biodegradable, and recyclables. It is easier for the collectors to know how should be the trash be disposed. It is already a law here in our country that smoking in public places is not allowed anymore. It can affect the health of the other residents and also adds to the litter not being thrown properly, like the cigarette butts. The amount of cars that the residents have is now limited due to the fact that the streets are oftentimes occupied by side parking. It can be difficult for others to pass and the administration said that the subdivision is looking like a car park already because of this. As I’ve mentioned earlier that the Pasig River is near our community, it is a risk when a typhoon comes since the water can rise and flood surrounding areas. I’ve experienced this already even when strong rain occurs. The local government can be more consistent with the laws that they implement and make sure that violators will be apprehended. I think that a barangay representative and the local government should have monthly reports and have meetings to bring up their issues so that it can be resolved. My insights for this session is that we should be more obedient when it comes to caring for our environment. Follow rules and respect it since it is also for our well-being. The Earth is slowly dying because of man-made disasters and climate change, and we must take action is resolving this. As God’s stewards we are to take care of His creation that He gave us. If we start doing our part in taking care of environment, people will follow as this brings us to change. Start making it a habit that we cannot live in a peaceful community if we ourselves don’t do anything to make a change.

[The Keihancarl Diaries: April 13, 2019]
Last time, it was exactly Friday the 13th. Well then, April 13th falls on a Saturday this year. No bad luck this time.
And yes, Keihancarl here. Right now, I'm off to another excursion (a mall-hopping adventure), from Masinag to Sta. Mesa... a.k.a. the LRT-2 East-West route.
I decided to wear all-black for this trip, save for the socks which are red. I don’t feel like wearing the black fleece coat and the black fingerless gloves for now due to extremely hot weather.
I left home a little early, hoping to reach Cubao before noon (I got there at exactly 11:00 AM). Checking Google Maps, it was light to moderate along the way, except in the Northern Fairview portion of Commonwealth Avenue.
Reaching LRT Araneta Center-Cubao Station, I reloaded my beep card and get inside the platform. The escalators in that station aren't operational due to the ongoing maintenance, as well as in other stations (particularly in Gilmore and Santolan stations).
As usual, there were condom ads in some LRT-2 stations.
I got off at LRT Katipunan station and took a short jeepney ride to my first destination, UP Town Center.
I visited a few shops, including Mumuso, Fully Booked, and Biblio (at the Urban Turf area).
I head back to LRT Katipunan Station, taking the train to LRT Santolan Station. I was greeted by a long queue of people going out of the platform. One of the Beep card machines broke down and is currently being fixed.
Heading to my next stop, Robinsons Metro East.
I just noticed the LRT Emerald Station nearing completion. I took a couple of pictures and went inside the mall.
I then had lunch at Bonchon Chicken, just an order of fried mandu dumplings with rice. I only checked Booksale's branch in that mall.
Next stop, Sta. Lucia Grand East mall. I didn't check any of the shops there.
The upper ground entrance on the Marcos Highway side is being renovated at the moment.
The jungle-themed centerpiece looks awesome. The pink flamingos too.
Next stop, SM City Masinag. Again, I only checked a few shops.
And this is the upcoming LRT Masinag station, as seen from the footbridge. It is higher than the mall beside it. The viaduct is incredibly higher too. Just imagine climbing down the station's fire exit...
Next stop, Ayala Malls Feliz. I checked a few shops and then visited the rooftop park.
The rooftop park looks nice, but there's no fake grass to sit on, unlike the ones in Glorietta and Circuit malls.
One can have a nice view of the Sierra Madre (pictured) and the Eastwood and Ortigas skylines from there.
Next stop, SM City Marikina. Looks like there's a little redevelopment going on in the main entrance, possibly more retail spaces for restaurants.
Outside, there's a road being constructed between the mall and the Marikina River.
And then I visited its neighbor Riverbanks Mall. I was only passing by the area.
The former restaurant and bar remained empty and unoccupied since my first visit in 2012. At least the statue of a drunken man is still there. Quite a lovely sight to behold, I must say.
Entering LRT Katipunan Station for the third time, I then rode the train to LRT Gilmore Station. Getting off, I saw a stall selling computer parts and laptop accessories.
Next stop, Robinsons Magnolia. I didn't check any of the shops there.
There’s a BT21 store by the mall’s entrance, selling various BT21 merchandise. BT21 is a group of cute characters created by Korean boy band BTS.
Looks like the expansion area is nearing completion. Gotta do something about the park, though. Anyway, I decided to have siomai at the mall's food court for a late afternoon snack and then head back to LRT Gilmore station.
For a while, I ditched riding the train to LRT V. Mapa Station in favor of taking a jeep to Gregorio Araneta Avenue. To be honest, it is quite a hassle taking a 5-minute walk between the mall and nearest LRT-2 station (LRT Gilmore Station). Well, I decided to ride the train this time, and it was actually more convenient and comfortable than riding the jeep, even if I have to endure a 5-minute walk...
Yes, that’s where my next destination is. Next stop, SM City Sta. Mesa.
Some parts of the mall's cinema level are currently being renovated. Of course, I checked Booksale’s branch in that mall, and there were a couple of interesting manga books... but I couldn’t buy them due to budget constraints. Quite a shame, that is.
And it's time to head back to Araneta Center. It only took me 10-15 minutes to get there.
I only checked Fully Booked at the Gateway Mall, as well as the three-level National Bookstore beside it.
I checked the mall’s garden area, and it sure looks good with the blue lights.
And yes, Gateway Mall is currently being expanded right now.
After that, I decided to have a hotdog sandwich at 7-11 and it's time to go home. I skipped Ali Mall for now due to time constraints. Traffic is heavy in some parts of Commonwealth, but light in most parts of the road. I managed to get home at around 9:30 PM. It was a 12-hour mall-hopping trip with selfies and pictures on the side.
I managed to get through this entire mall-hopping trip. I mean, visiting ten malls within a 12-hour period on a scorching hot day can be pretty exhausting at times.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to POF 2019: Asobu and the Cloverleaf-Valenzuela-Manila mall-hopping trip, both in May. Until next time!
All pics are uploaded to my private Instagram account, @kcox105.

Hi, my name is Trina, 17 year old girl who chose to left home at a young age. Yes I do have a boyfriend, but that's not just the reason behind. There's a lot more. I do not intend to left home just because my father scolded me about knowing my secret relationship with someone. It's far more than that. And now is the time for me to speak for myself. I lived with my grandma for a long time since I was a baby, she was the one who raised me with so much love, care, affection and a lot more learning in life and about God. I am raised in a family who had a very strong faith. But despite growing up with all of those I grew up being a hard headed girl, not too much but a mild one. What I mean is, I do what I want to do, I tried whats in trend for the kids, for teens. It all started when I reached Grade 5, that's the start where I am courted by boys, but it never came up like a very much problem that time cause my grandma tries to talk to me in a way that I will surely understand what she preach. She will listen to whatever I have to say then after that she will take action to it. Then came my high school days, when I was in first year I am drawn to KPOP, everyone knows I love to dance, again... it all started when I entered a Cover Group, a dance group as you called. Every Saturday or Sunday I will ask for permission to practice at Anda, Intramuros. From Morning till Night because it's just a one day practice every week and yet theres a competition per month at that time so we have to struggle for time management, I am so late in coming back home, I even broke my curfew because of dancing. What hurts the most is, everyone thinks that I am taking drugs, or I am at a gimik, or I am with a boyfriend. To end that up, I let them know who am I with. Yes, it was all stress and I couldn't blame my grandma for that. I love her, but I love my hobby too. But I am studying hard, in fact I'm at cream of the crop section, the section 1. There's nothing to worry about my studies, I never let my Grandma down about it. Time goes by, I am in 3rd year. As far as I remember it was half way that year, my parents came back here in Philippines from Dubai. The same reason, my grandma can't take good care of us because she's stressed and she's getting old. At first, my mom seems to treat us good and with care. I love that feeling, she even takes good care of me when I caught a high fever. But a little time goes by, she became rough. One thing I can't forget that happened was when she slapped me in the middle of a whole court in our school with a lot of classes going on. Everyone was shooked, even I can't do anything but to cry. The reason? I pleaded for her to bring my project that I left in our home. That day was deadline, I was too busy, I have lots of report and projects going on that's why I left that one accidentally. She replied to me "Iresponsable ka kasi." And then she came raging, slapped me infront of my classmates and everyone else. Gladly my sister came with her, she was dragged by my sister to prevent any other misbehavior to happen. It's not that much, but my confidence broke down, ofcourse. After that incident, my classmates repeatedly asks me whats with my mom, whats the problem, and I couldn't tell them. I have a reputation inside the school to keep and it went like that. Patuloy lang yung mga ganitong bagay. Inside our house there is 4 of us. My mom, dad, my sister and me. I am treated as a blacksheep of the family. Right from the start I heard my mom blame me saying, "Di naman kami uuwi dito kung hindi dahil sayo eh. Matigas kasi ulo mo. Ang ganda ganda ng buhay namin sa Dubai, di kagaya dito mahirap kumita ng pera!" I just shrugged and still do my thing. To enjoy, study, and be with people who knows my true personality. When I'm outside, I am joyful yet reserved one. Many people get intimidated to me, and see me like a very good child. Like I don't do anything bad. While inside the house, they think like I am a very bad person. My mom and dad always says, "Wala ka na ngang kwenta, masama pa ugali mo." They're so mad at me for some reason. I graduated 4th year, with honor. Because no matter how bad I look to them, I never forget to study hard. I wanted to make them proud atleast in academics. But I think it's not that much appreciated. I won't be in the honor list if I don't strive for it, isn't it? Yet I never heard them say that they're proud of me. Instead they always threaten me that when I got a bad grade they'll stop me from studying, mag asawa na lang daw ako. Hahaha. I am so pressured. I don't want ro stop. Literally saying, I enjoyed my teen year, but what I am proud of is that I never tried doing drugs, smoking, and bad things such as those. But they always insisted that I do, they even want to get me checked in the hospital. I feel so bad. I REALLY FEEL BAD FOR MYSELF! I am always blamed for something I hated to do. I entered college, a new start for me. My sister planned to help me get into a good and private school, she promised me but I know that it's impossible, but it's okay. Since my parents always had a problem about money, I decided to take an entrance exam test in a state university in able to prevent them from spending money. Kasi in the first place, ako nga daw ang dahilan kung bakit nandito sila sa pilipinas at naghihirap. I studied at Sta. Mesa Manila. By the way, I changed for good, my close relatives like my tita and grandma saw that change from me. Inside the house, I do choirs, I mop the floor, I change bed sheets, I wash dishes from morning till night, I do things man can do, I operate all high tech devices, I do the laundry, I do the shelves, I clean the house, I clean the ref, I fold the clothes, and everything else. I do what ever thing that I can to please them, but I guess that wasn't enough. I'm still the "walang kwentang anak." And aside from that, I studied in a University where there is too much pressure going on. It's not just a school, it's a home for students who can handle a lot of pain in the brain. But my parents thinks that I am in a gimik, that I don't go to school, that I don't study. Everytime I came home from school, my mom would say, "San ka nanaman galing? Lumandi ka nanaman jan sa labas. Maghugas ka na jan, para naman may pakinabang ka." There's just too much going on. I never came home peaceful. I am stressed inside cause I feel like there's no one inside our home that I can talk to after a tiring day. The place where I expected that I can be open and appreciated. I experienced going in school without eating breakfast because there is nothing prepared in the dining. I go to school with a 150 in hand. Including my fare back and forth and the rest for my food. Until every week, that 150 is deducted to 130, 120. How can I survive with that? They don't gave me extra. I always have to ask for it. Before going to school, I asked for my grandma or Tita, or Ate if I can borrow any amount of money to lend me, pandagdag lang sa baon ko. In school, I was always alone. My classmates often see me spacing out. I eat alone, I sit alone, I wait alone, I am always with myself. But my parents think that I have a lot of friends. Akala nila may "barkada" ako, kasi mukha nga namang may barkada ako sa schhol. Yes, I do have few friends. My classmates can prove that. They never really tried to know who I am. They never talked to me without judging a little thing about my shortcomings. Instead they judge me for what I showed them. I admit I never go home straight from school, instead I make myself occupied and happy because I wanted to spend my day without a problem, I play in SM alone, dance, eat when I have spare money, I do what makes me happy, because I know that at the end of the day, I'll come back home with the same problem, the place where I feel so toxic. I am suppressed. I never feel appreciated at home. Just because I show them a side where I'm strong doesn't mean they need to use my potential that much. Aside from that, I have diseases, my spinal column suffers from a dextroscoliosis, I told my parents about it, but they just keep telling me that, "Ipapa check-up ka na lang pag may pera na." Don't shrugged me off, it's not a little defect. Years go by but still nothing happened. But when it's them that's sick, money was all over the place, they can even find ways to borrow money. They were supposed to be the people who'll help me grow, but they don't. They'll supposed to be the people who can understand me. I don't exactly know what to feel anymore. Feeling ko umaagos na lang yung buhay ko sa ganon lang. I do sometimes think that I have mental issues, or emotional problem because of keeping this all inside. I never ever had a chance to speak without being scolded, without hearing unpleasant words. I never ever had a chance to speak where I'm right. They always made me feel I'm wrong. I'm wrong in everything I do. People, I love my parents. We have different ways to show our love. I showed them that but they can't see it because they're blinded by the things I did before that caused them to be where they are now. Before I left, I send a message to my sister about taking care of them including my little sister. I told her not to leave their side no matter what happens because she's the responsible one in their eyes. I told my sister to bear whatever my parents are doing, because out of all people, my sister is the one who can justify what I am saying right now, she's the only one I can lean on when I am done of myself that time. She's the only one who believes in me and of what I am capable of. Sabi nga niya, "Ikaw pa yung mas panganay satin gumalaw." ( I miss you so much Ate. ) Whenever I am near to breaking down, I always seek for my sister's company to tell her how miserable I feel. I told my Ate that maybe, I wasn't the daughter our parents could be proud of.Thats when I left bringing my uncomplete self but bolder, searching for people who can complete me atleast because that's what I never felt. Hinahanap ko yung sarili ko, kung san ba ko talaga dapat lumugar. I wouldn't be this tough if only I did feel that love from my parents. I don't have the family you think I have. Yes people, I may look good, but you don't know how many things are going on in me. At some point in my life, I'm suicidal, I wrote my stuff in Tumblr. I even do wrote a suicidal letter. Hahaha. But my faith that was taught to me prevented that to happen. To teens like me, you're lucky if you have parents who supports you fully and cheers you up. You don't know guys how lucky you are. I'm not trying to ask for sympathy, I just wanted you to know a part of my side. Parents, always remember that caring is different from satisfying your ego of being in parenthood. You we're all designed to love your child unconditionally, understand them atleast, and listen to them, an ear that listens is much better than speaking your preach everytime. Reach out for your child, before it's too late. You may not admit that you're doing the same thing but you'll never know until you ask. Ask them what they feel about you, ask them if there is something you need to improve or change. It's not always your child that needs to fit in. In all forms of relationship, balance is the key. You're not just designed to feed us to grow physically, you need to feed us to grow our individuality, to nurture it. Dictation leads to incontentment, so let them decide for themselves, when they seem to choose the wrong path thats when you need to preach. "Papunta palang kayo, pabalik na kami." Yes that's true but we are in a way different path, once we're born our stories are already written in our hands, you all need to accept that. We are who you showed us to be. Parents will be parents. I didn't ask for you all to believe what I said, but I'm leaving this here. It's your choice to believe or not, whatever you have to say, you're all free to say it. But always think before you speak. I don't intend to trigger you all but this is what it is. I don't want me nor my parents to be bashed, I dont want our personal life to be at stake just like this but I don't have any choice but to speak myself up. This is the only form I can, and the only way I see. I've tried confront and personal talks but it leads to misunderstanding so I leave it all here never to be done again. This is just a part of the story, I repeat. It doesn't end here.
