Serious Sam Analysis
‘Serious Sam: The First Encounter’ is a game made by the ‘Croteam’ studio. It was released in 2001.
Serious Sam is a single player focused first person shooter game. The game is designed to have very little downtime and constant excitement and bloodshed, with waves and waves of constantly spawning monsters charging at the player.
There are 4 mechanics here that are really worth talking about, that makes serious sam stand out from other fps shooters of its time.
Constantly spawning waves of enemies:
When you enter a new room/area, you are in that area for a long time, as waves of enemies constantly spawn from various points around the room and try to viciously murder you. This mechanic, with the mechanic of the variety of weapons, creates the fast paced yet strategic dynamic that this game provides. Aesthetically you feel like you have to pick the right weapon for the right situation which adds that feeling of figuring out strategy, and you also have the pressure of constantly getting chipped away at by hordes of enemies, with only some slight breathing room as you travel between areas after you have cleared one.
Weapon Variety: The weapon variety is an interesting and arguably different mechanic from other FPS games as well, due to how different the weapons are. They are strategic and useful in different situations, instead of one being flat out better than another one. They range all the way from the simple pistol with unlimited bullets, all the way to a cannonball launcher that rolls through enemies and hits stuff behind them as well. As mentioned this interacting with the rooms of enemies creates the dynamic of rationing out your ammo and using the correct guns in the correct situation. This kinda goes hand in hand with the powerups mechanic too, you’ll get them before every major room so the weapons you can use are limited by the ammo you will get just beforehand.
Power Ups:
The power ups are items that increase/restore health and armor, and replenish your ammo or give you new weapons. Some of these are hidden in secret rooms to reward the player for exploring, and sometimes they are there to lure the player into a trap. Your milage may vary. Mostly this mechanic comes into play between rooms, you run around picking up power ups before leaving a completed room or in the hallway before entering the next one, to give you a break from the relentless combat. This is how this interacts with the first two mechanics, by giving something to fill in the negative space. The aesthetic of this is to make the player feel occupied while in the downtime.
NETRICSA journal:
This is the part of the game that makes the game somewhat strategic instead of just a mindless shooter and that’s why it’s worth mentioning. This is something that can be opened up at any time by the player, and provide information on enemies/weapons encountered so far. After the first time you come across a new enemy, you can open this up to reference how it will behave to be prepared for later when you will come into contact with more of them in a much more dangerous situation. Dynamically it reacts with both the weapons and the enemies in that it teaches the player how to deal with them, and the aesthetic makes the player feel less lost and more like a strategic player due to actually have the information on how to react.
Game Loops:
The most important loop to mention here is the core loop. The core loop is what is repeated to make up the entire Serious Sam gameplay. It looks like this:
The level loop is just a repeating process of this, with very little variance outside of the strategic layout of the rooms.
The moment to moment loop is basically just shooting at anything near you when you’re engaged in combat.
A play session is designed to be at least one level, as getting to the end of one level is considered the point where you have actually made progress.
Overall this is a very simple yet very fun game to play. I did enjoy playing serious sam as once I had figured out the strategy I could just sit back and shoot at things, high intensity and low thought. They definitely focused hard on minimising the unfun downtime parts of these games, and it shows, because the experience is basically always exciting, and with the way the rooms are laid out you are essentially never lost either, and while a lot of other fps’ can bore you with the downtime that never happened here. This game definitely achieved what it set out to do.

in the REALLY EARLY stages of doing a silly little roleswap thing bc its rotting in my head
NETRICSA is an android made specifically for the Mental War. She's still incredibly intelligent and also very fixated on killing. It can be a bit of a detriment.
Sam is still the one who awoke Mental. I think that in this AU Brand didn’t step in to defend him and he got a much worse sentence. He's eventually offered the prospect of 'redemption' in the form of being scanned into a chip intended to instill a bit of humanity into Nettie. He's a bit less mad in this one, at least to start, because he hasn't actually been to war. If I draw him again I'm gonna change his outfit to an altered version of what he wore on the Surveyor because that helps get the point across much better.
More rambling in the tags.
#These are really messy but I just had to get SOMETHING down on paper.#Sam came out kinda bad but whatever. Proof of concept.#The heart on Netties vest is a ref to how she appears in DD but also intended to be ironic#like how the serious bomb is. Serious. And Sam isn't lol.#the eye is a tormental reference#kinda#we all know the association with nettie and eyes around here. Right?#I don't think this is a full roleswap au. Just these two.#I can't really think of anything interesting that could come from doing any of the AAA#sooo yeah. blegh.#serious sam#sam stone#NETRICSA#posts by twigs
