Painting storm drains with reminders such as “A healthy harbor starts here” or “Drains to our harbor” is one way to increase awareness that our activity on campus impacts the health of the Inner Harbor. As a service project, we participated in the “Stencil a Storm Drain” program sponsored by Blue Water Baltimore. Dr. Engel attended a stenciling workshop which entitled us to borrow a stencil kit. UNIFE-NDMU students formed three teams to clean the storm drains with wire brushes. After a lot of muscle power (and a little assistance from a power tool), the next task was to design the layout. Finally we took turns painting. Next time you travel along the road that runs between the soccer field and the stream take a look at our messages!

The NDMU-UNIFE exchange program has a goal to provide education in water and environmental science. To date, we have had lectures by the Sierra Club and Blue Water Baltimore, we sailed on the Chesapeake Bay, and we explored a park with a former reservoir at its center. Today Kelly Lindow, Professional Engineer and owner of CityScape Engineering, spoke to the students about her undergraduate and graduate studies as well as her career path. Kelly’s passion for solving stormwater problems brought her to Baltimore.

The UNIFÉ and NDMU students attended a pleasant guided tour by Paul Espinoza, librarian at the George Peabody Library.
Mr. Espinoza showed visitors a series of prints from different eras and themes illustrating the history of the book with volumes from the library. When asked which of those books was his favorite, Mr. Espinoza said that the Moby Dick edition of Melville was special for him, since the author refers to the George Washington monument located next to the Peabody library in Mount Vernon, Baltimore.
