Support Coordination - Empowering Individuals to Navigate the NDIS Marketplace
Support Coordinators help you set up your NDIS Plan and access all the right supports. They work with individuals to strengthen their ability to design and build their own support networks, as well as link them to the broader systems of support.
They are also able to assist in the development of fair service agreements and prepare for plan reviews.
What is Support Coordination?
A support coordinator is a specialist who assists participants to connect with services in the community and build on existing informal supports such as family. They can source a range of different providers and services and provide a detailed assessment and plan design to ensure that each individual person receives the best support for their unique needs.
They work closely with the participant to establish their own supports, providing advice and assistance in navigating the NDIS landscape. They can help individuals to develop their own skills and confidence to make decisions about their own support, as well as helping them to resolve points of crisis.
They can also assist with budget management and aid in planning for a future that is flexible, adaptive and responsive to changes in the participant’s needs. However, as a general rule of thumb, they do not have the power to make decision for the participant or to negotiate prices or service agreements.
How can we help?
Gellibrand support coordinators can help you find a range of services to bring your NDIS plan to life. These can include support workers, home modifications, transport services and more. They can also assist you to find the right providers for each support. They can negotiate with your preferred service providers to develop fair service agreements, and they can help you resolve any issues that may arise during the course of your NDIS supports.
A support coordination Melbourne service can improve communication between you and your service provider team, which can reduce stress levels and increase your independence. They can also help you to identify future services that might be needed as your needs change over time.
As a registered NDIS provider Melbourne, Melba Support can provide you with a comprehensive, individualised support coordination service. We can assess your needs and goals, then connect you with the NDIS providers and community support services that will best help you achieve them.
NDIS Core Supports funding can be used for Support Coordination
NDIS participants have a Core Supports budget which is allocated to eight support sub-categories. Each sub-category is matched with goals in the participant’s plan. Funding within each category can only be used for the specific purpose set out in the plan.
NDIA’s ‘assistance with social and community participation’ funding enables participants to access recreational activities and services. This includes things like memberships at a gym and fitness equipment.
Specialist support coordinators work alongside participants to help them utilise their Core Supports budget in the most effective way. This can include helping to negotiate with service providers, resolving issues with services and helping prepare for a plan review.
NDIS participants can claim support coordination line items from their Capacity Building or Core - Assistance with Daily Living budgets until 31 March 2021. This is a transition period to assist participants who were utilising this temporary measure during COVID-19 and haven’t yet had their plans reassessed. However, only if the participants need it and it is considered reasonable and necessary.
Contact us
Gellibrand offers specialist support coordination in Melbourne, empowering individuals to navigate the NDIS marketplace to find their preferred services providers and set them up. This includes negotiating prices and service agreements, assisting with plan review preparation, and resolving points of crisis. Our Disability Support Coordinators are local people who know their regions and are skilled in sourcing a range of specialist disability and therapeutic supports. They can also help individuals build their knowledge and confidence to coordinate their own supports over time, if this is their preference. Contact us to learn more.

A week ago today workshop starts
Last week today Bernie & I started a dance/film workshop. I met these amazing real life professional dancers and it has changed my life as a dancer for the better, they are the only people who knows my heart, soul and how I am a better person for knowing these people I met. it’s really rare for me to be the dancer I am now it’s a very nice thing being able to work with your friends everyday that’s one of my favourite things about my passion I have made so many memories, experience the unknown life of dance.
Celina, Sarah, both Mitch A and S, Alex, Ashleigh, Lauren, Rita and Talitha so one of the first experience I experienced was that Talitha and I as we were dancing she lifted me it felt both comfortable as well as uncomfortable because no one ever has worked with me that way before. Lifting someone is scary because your putting your own body into someones hands or around someone elses body by the way they lift you its a physical challenge for any dancer.
Professional dancers practice them everyday so it becomes second nature to them for me its still a first time thing until I work at it. Maybe hopefully Bernie and I can use some of that in our own choreography that would be fun. so let’s just say I have had an unbelievable experience and I can add that to my life story to tell friends, family and family from Melbourne when we can travel again.
From Fitness I came home with mum did a survey with Alice from NDIS and that was long but worth while doing then went home with um to have a bit of lunch and loz time then I had Phoebe and all we did was big coastal walk along Trig Beach then grocery shopping then home to sleep which I did after afternoon tea now the time is 6:27 half dressed for dance practiced for singing lesson now updating my blog and waiting for the text from Alice to say I am here so I can go to dance and have a good time there like I usually do every Tuesday night right now waiting for dinner to cool its a tuna meal with strawberries on the side I picked fresh from the ground with Phoebe yesterday.
Just had dance it was fun had a car party with Alice on the way home now the time is 9:12 going to exfoliate soon and write in may book then bed but trying to get in contact with family but can't don't know what to do either wait it out or until mum texts and then call in the morning so I know what I am doing tomorrow because we don't know times and what I am doing in the day but hoping for gym somehow that’s another blog to start so lets see what happens and I will let you bloggers know about it then.

MIKEY’S PERSONAL BLOG 106, May 2018
On Monday night, I went down to YMCA Casey RACE for a Spa/Sauna/Steam Room session as well as a Water Workout class with fitness instructor Janine. It’s been a month or two since I last did both of these activities down at Casey RACE due to the flooring upgrade works but thankfully it’s now been completed around the Spa areas. I generally allocate about 10 minutes to each of the facilities which is usually long enough for me. https://www.caseyrace.ymca.org.au/aquatics/aquatic-facilities
It felt great to engage in some hydrotherapy using the high-pressure jets to massage the tension in my joints, obliques and lower back muscles. Deep sweating in the sauna and steam room also have plenty of health benefits associated with them and you don’t have to stay in those rooms that long either. https://www.care2.com/greenliving/the-health-benefits-of-steam-rooms-and-saunas.html
Tonight’s Water Workout session was really fun and enjoyable. The pool was packed being a Monday night with around 20-30 people in the class. We did many different movements and exercises including Jogging with High Knees, Mermaid, Rock ‘N’ Roll, Tuck Jumps, Front and Side Kicks and Dumbell Rolls. Janine put on a varied mix of tracks including TLC’s Waterfalls, Meagan Trainor’s All About That Bass and Richard Marx’s Right Here Waiting. https://www.livestrong.com/article/133611-water-aerobics-benefits/
On Tuesday morning, I had my Employ Your Mind session at WISE Employment - Cranbourne office. Today’s session was more intimate with only three PHaMs workers in attendance (Ally, Jane and Vadim). This actually made for a more productive session as I tend to work better in smaller groups. We worked on the area of conversation including how to start one, thinking about your presentation, body language, attitude and the social situation.
The second half of the session was about linking the computer activities in the ThinkingGym to thinking skills used in everyday life. Over the past few weeks, I’ve been doing lots of exercises related to short term memory, visual working memory, problem solving and executive function. These are all areas in which I’m still continuing to improve. I discussed with the group how writing lists, using a journal or planner and saving important reminders in my phone have really helped in improving my cognitive skills. http://www.fifeemploymentaccesstrust.com/employ-your-mind.html
On Tuesday afternoon, Mum and I visited our GP, Dr. Mah Mah Thet, at Narregate Medical & Dental Centre in Narre Warren. Firstly, I wanted to get my results from the Glucose Tolerance Test that I did a couple of weeks ago. Thankfully I got a normal result which is <6.1 mmol/L fasting glucose and <7.8mmol/L after two hours. The second thing was to get another Mental Heathcare Plan organised. https://www.mayoclinic.org/tests-procedures/glucose-tolerance-test/about/pac-20394296
I had to get a few things updated like my K10 questionnaire with my score of 31/50 lying just inside the severe mental disorder range. Clearly some aspects of my mental health have improved over the last few months but my moods are still up and down. My sleeping patterns  and energy/motivation are still poor. I still have phases of social isolation, moderate-high levels of depression and high levels of anxiety. Hence why continuing sessions with my counsellor and psychologist is really important. https://www.healthdirect.gov.au/mental-health-care-plan
On Tuesday night, I attended an NDIS Community Information Session at Balla Balla Community Centre in Cranbourne East. I wanted to remain open minded about tonight’s meeting as I knew it would be pretty biased towards the NDIA. A lady named Sharna began by going through the steps involved to become a participant using a brochure called My NDIS Pathway. She touched on things including who is eligible, how to access the NDIS, what a planning meeting would look like and the types of things they fund and support. https://www.ndis.gov.au/event/cranbourne-info-29may
The next presenter was Kylie from the Department of Human Health Services briefly discussed when the NDIS will be rolling out in Southern Melbourne as well as what defined and undefined programs are, the future role of the Government in funding the NDIS. Next was Chris who talked about the role of Local Area Co-ordinators (LACs) which includes helping with developing and implementing your plan, connecting you to supports and services, helping you connect more with the community and the planning discussion. He also mentioned a website called Reimagine Today which is dedicated to people with a mental health condition and how the NDIS could support them. https://providers.dhhs.vic.gov.au/ndis
Finally we had a lady from the Disability Services Commissioner (DSC) who is a body which helps resolve and deal with complaints related to the NDIS. She went into the types of things you can complain about include planning, personal care, case management, day and respite services, behavioural and financial support services. It was nice to see a neutral, unbiased speaker presenting her point-of-view considering how many issues and flaws there seems to be so far with the NDIS. http://www.odsc.vic.gov.au/
However, I’m trying to remain optimistic about the possibility of becoming a participant myself. There’s also the possibility that I could fall under the category of having a psychosocial disability which is basically means having a mental health issue as well as a disability where one impacts or influences the other. So in my case, I have High Functioning Autism as well as Anxiety and Depression. https://reimagine.today/step-1/disability-and-psychosocial-disability/
As much as I found parts of this meeting to be boring and essentially a recap of information the NDIS already have available on their website, I didn’t find it to be a waste of time to be there. Learning about what LAC’s do and that the DSC even existed shows that I did take something way from this meeting. I feel like arming myself with as much information as possible before September 1st is a very smart move on my part even if a lot of it is repeated, confusing or overwhelming. https://www.ndis.gov.au/
On Thursday morning, I did a session on the Treadmill at YMCA Casey RACE in Cranbourne East. I’m slowly gaining more confidence every time I jump onto the treadmill now, though I also know where my limits are. I’m still not quite comfortable to let go of the handles nor run or jog on the treadmill yet but I was able to maintain a power walking pace for most of the workout, around 6-7 kmph. Over about 50 minutes or so, I burned around 320 calories, traveled over 5 km and got my heart-rate up to 150 bpm. I working to make this a regular habit even if it’s once a week because I’m determined to shed some body fat.  https://www.caseyrace.ymca.org.au/gym/gym-facilities
On Thursday night, I went to an Open Level Vinyasa yoga class with Aaron Petty at Level Up Yoga in Berwick. Tonight was very quiet attendance-wise and so I ended up having a private session with Aaron. The last time I was by myself with a yoga teacher, things went pear shaped. I hadn’t really had much experience doing yoga yet and I was feeling self-conscious as hell. I wanted to run out of the studio. But tonight I was feeling a lot calmer and reassured. I think having built up trust with your yoga teacher helps a lot and to let go of the nervous tension and awkwardness. https://www.aaronpetty.com/about-me/
I generally have three main barriers when it comes to doing yoga: Anxiety, Self-Doubt and Fatigue. It’s the “What if?” type thoughts, feeling like I’m not doing a pose or movement right, being too hard on myself, not keeping up or going too fast, struggling to slow my breath down, dealing with the discomfort associated with tight muscles and joints. But barriers can always be overcome. This is what I kept telling myself tonight as I went through the class. Those harsh, critical voices inside my head are always going to linger but I don’t have to let them take over and become a burden. https://www.yogajournal.com/poses/yoga-by-benefit/anxiety
Aaron let me choose what I wanted to work on tonight. Unprepared, I followed his suggestion of focusing on the shoulders and hips. Vinyasa is a strength-based yoga practice so of course there was lots of deep stretches, core work and sweating going on. I felt really proud that with Aaron’s help, I was able to push myself enough to get deeper into my poses including Wide Squats, Lizard Pose, Wheel Pose and Wide-Legged Forward Bend. Plus my Vinyasa Flow sequence has improved a lot as I was able to do full push-ups and up dogs. https://www.yogajournal.com/yoga-101/types-of-yoga/vinyasa-yoga
Aaron will be closing down the studio over the next two weeks for renovations and will be opening up again in mid-June. Updates can be found on the Level Up Yoga Facebook page here: https://www.facebook.com/levelup.yoga.berwick/
On Friday morning, I went to my Body Combat class with Cinamon Guerin at YMCA Casey ARC in Narre Warren. Something I really struggle with in the morning especially leading up to Winter is motivation. I literally had to drag myself out of bed, have breakfast, watch last night’s episode of Home & Away (Priorities! :P), get dressed in my workout gear, leave the house by 8.30-8.45am, beat the school and morning peak hour traffic, find a parking spot at Casey Arc and walk into the Group Fitness Studio. All of this takes a great deal of effort, physical and mental energy, stamina and time but honestly it’s worth it.
Just like most Friday morning Combat class, this one was packed, intense and sweaty. Cinamon chose a mixture of tracks from previous releases including Break The Rules by Annoymous Hotel (Lower Body Warm-up), Dark Horse by Katy Perry (Martial Arts) and Watch It Burn by Camo & Krooked Feat. Ayah Marar (Power Training). The most challenging parts of the class for me were the endurance jab boxes, dynamic lunges with front kicks and the high knee repeater. I actually felt really confident about my round-house kicks today, I was smashing it. https://lesmills.com.au/bodycombat
It’s safe to say that the whole class was struggling today with their levels of fatigue and muscle soreness but at least we could all have a laugh about it. As soon as that last track came on (I don’t wanna do this anymore), I think most people were feeling that sentiment. But we all pushed on regardless. It’s incredible how I’m able to pull some last minute energy out even when I’m feeling stuffed and I’d just rather collapse on the floor or into a comfy chair. http://w3.lesmills.com/israel/en/classes/bodycombat/learn-the-moves/
On Friday afternoon, I had a counselling session with Ruth from Piece Together Counselling in Narre Warren. I think the biggest thing that I learned today was about not allowing stereotypical labels such as “I have High Functioning Autism” or “I’m an anxious/depressed person” to define me. That I am more than my mental illnesses and disabilities. It’s so easy to let the negative connotations take over but I should never see myself as weak, incapable, not good enough or that there’s something wrong with me. https://www.sane.org/mental-health-and-illness/facts-and-guides/reducing-stigma
The other thing was around personal growth and self-actualisation. Ruth describes it as similar to a plant growing towards the sunlight. It’s our ability to realise our potential and be the person that you’re meant to be. On reflection, I can see a lot of the progress I’ve made in many different aspects of my life. From setting a weight loss goal to making fitness a regular habit to learning ways to cope better with stress, anxiety, depression to attending and educating myself on what it means to be autistic to pushing the boundaries in social situations. https://www.psychologytoday.com/au/blog/theory-and-psychopathology/201308/the-theory-self-actualization
There’s also my interests such as reading, writing blogs and reviews, journaling, yoga, meditation, nature, movies, puzzles, domestic animals, art, drawing, painting, music and supporting local bands. Plus engagement and participating in courses and programs including basic cooking skills, mental health support, introduction to mindfulness and strength-based fitness. These are the things that truly reflect the person that I am. https://www.piecetogethercousellingnarrewarren.org/

MIKEY’S PERSONAL BLOG 105, May 2018
On Monday morning, I went to my Body Pump class with Natalie Blanch at YMCA Casey RACE in Cranbourne East. Today’s class was essentially what I wanted to do last Thursday had I made it there on time. Thankfully I actually got there early so I had plenty of time to set up all of my equipment (bench, hand weights, dumbbell plates and bar, foam mat). It’s literally been months since I’ve been to one of Nat’s classes. As always, life tends to get in the way plus I know that she changes her teaching schedule now and then so it’s a bit hard to keep up with.
Today’s pump class was both fun and challenging. Today we worked through Release 85 which contains tracks like Muse - Uprising, Cascada - The Rhythm of the Night, Pink - Blow Me One Last Kiss and Brooklyn Bounce - This is How We Rock! The most difficult parts for me where definitely the lunges, weighted squats with the bar, bicep curls and the core work (leg extensions, crunches). I really surprised myself in being able to do the plyometric squat jumps over the bench as it’s something I’ve never done before.
Of course the most laughs came during the Pink track, which is Nat’s favourite artist, as we all mentally spoke the explicit lyrics of the song (Just when it can’t get worse, I’ve had a SHIT day!). Nat always manages to make Pump classes really fun and enjoyable despite how tough it is fatigue and soreness wise. As she said today, we always get through the sets with a smile on our faces, no matter how hard it gets. http://www.totallylesmills.com/site/bodypump
On Tuesday morning, I had my Employ Your Mind session at WISE Employment in Cranbourne. Today I met two new clients and two new facilitators in the group which I had mixed emotions about. In terms of their personalities, I got along with them pretty well though it did remind me too much of high school with the facilitators constantly cracking up and making jokes. On the one hand, I did need a good laugh after how depressed and socially isolated I’ve been recently. But it showed that they weren’t taking the session that seriously.
It was also clear that neither of them had the experience to run a group program nor were very computer literate. But me being polite and friendly, I cut them some slack and just focused on filling out the worksheets and doing my Thinking Gym exercises on the computer. Today’s session was about Social Cognition which includes how we think, feel and behave in a social setting, having awareness about different social situations, reading non-verbal cues, determining the mood of another person and being able to see things from a different perspective.
It’s an area I continually have to work on as I’ve struggled in social situations (groups of people in particular) my entire life. However, I found myself volunteering my answers to the group and even presenting my ideas for the project I’m working on, Becoming a Barista. I wasn’t fully confident with my answers as I’m still inexperienced when it comes to serving food and beverages and operating a coffee making machine but I still gave it a go anyway.
On Tuesday night, I attended my Body Combat class with Cinamon Guerin at YMCA Casey ARC in Narre Warren. I was quite indecisive today about which class I was going to attend tonight. It also didn’t help that I spend an hour or so figuring out how to setup my new phone, a HTC One X10. I literally needed a YouTube video to help me work out how to insert the sim card. But thankfully I managed to get it up and running before leaving for Casey Arc. https://www.24life.com/seven-bodycombat-moves-to-master-before-your-first-class/
It’s been over a month since my last Combat class so naturally I was pretty rusty. I was also feeling quite sore after my Pump class yesterday so the fatigue came on fast and strong. Cinamon gave us a mixture of tracks from older releases with a lot of complex movements such as jab-crosses, roundhouse kicks, uppercuts, descend/ascends, knee strikes, esquivas, push-ups and dynamic lunges. Thankfully Cinamon always manages to make me laugh even during the workout which helps to take the pressure off how difficult the class can get. https://www.inkin.com/blog/en/Fighting-Fit--All-You-Need-To-Know-About-Body-Combat
On Thursday morning, I had an appointment with my support worker Ally Lamb at Colourfield Cafe Casey Central in Narre Warren South. Today I mostly talked about how I felt about my Employ Your Mind session on Tuesday and some work related issues I had last night. Ally is very good when it comes to giving me a different perspective to look at in order to see what else might be happening. This actually helps because it makes me less likely to take things personally and to reflect on situations with hindsight and critical thinking.
We also had a discussion around what it would be like for me to work in a cafe and becoming a barista. She suggested that perhaps I could do some work experience in a cafe as part of my Employ Your Mind assessment to get some hands on experience such as learning how to use the coffee machine, making different coffees for the customer, serving customers, cleaning duties and presentation. It could be a very good thing for me.
On Thursday afternoon, I had a foot reflexology massage with Shannon Currant at Chisholm Institute in Berwick. I was feeling pretty flustered walking into Building B as I literally didn’t have much time to spare in between my appointment with Ally, coffee date with Mum, doing shopping and errands at Cranbourne Park Shopping Centre and then driving straight to TAFE. I was clearly burning the candle at both ends as fitting everything in proved more difficult than I first thought.
So ironically this massage was very necessary for me right now. It’s the second time I’ve volunteered myself for one of Shannon’s practical assessments for her Beauty course and I had a positive experience last time, so I figured I’d help her out again. Besides some distracting conversations and giggles that were happening next door (cough cough), it was very relaxing and nourishing.
Shannon did a great job not only with the massage but also with the reflexology theory, determining which parts of my feet were more “crunchy” than others. Each area of the foot directly connects to another part or system within the body. So for example, my main areas of concern and improvement are the ears, sinuses and respiratory system (no surprises there to be honest). I was genuinely impressed with her knowledge and proved to be a good learning experience for me as well. https://www.natural-holistic-health.com/reflexology-massage-techniques/
On Thursday night, Mum and I attended an NDIS Information Session at Bunjil Place in Narre Warren. It’s only been about six months since I first became aware of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) after being diagnosed with High Functioning Autism.  So far it is very confusing and overwhelming for many of the parents, children and adults involved. The biggest problem is that it’s a lengthy process just to even apply to be a participant let alone get your first plan.
Pamela Gatos from Amaze was tonight’s presenter and she did a great job of being brutally honest about what we need to do to prepare your application, the disability requirements, what evidence to provide, the types of funding the NDIA (National Disability Insurance Agency) provide, the ways you can manage your funding and introducing NDIS workshops. It’s a lot of information for most people to absorb and this is just scratching the surface. http://www.amaze.org.au/2017/06/are-you-ndis-ready-amazes-new-online-resource-will-guide-you/
It seems from the questions that were raised tonight that a lot of people are disappointed in the NDIA’s lack of response and ability to provide good enough answers. Whilst the scheme does look good on paper and there have been some positive cases of the plan been effectively utilised, there is still a long way to go. It hasn’t even been rolled out into our area yet (Southern Melbourne which includes Greater Dandenong, City of Casey and Cardinia) which is expected to be from September 1st. https://www.casey.vic.gov.au/community-services/ndis
This information night, whilst it wasn’t accommodating in terms of place (30-40 attendees in an average sized meeting room), was helpful because it wasn’t a bullshit session about how “great” the NDIS is. The NDIA have very high expectations when it comes to providing evidence of your disability and proving how “severe” your disability is. Plus they can take months to respond to applicants and process your Access Request Form. But that’s just the reality we’re dealing with here. https://www.ndis.gov.au/people-disability/access-requirements.html
On Friday morning, Mum and I attended the Biggest Morning Tea charity function at Balla Balla Community Centre in Cranbourne East. This is the second time we have gone to a BMT held at Balla Balla and it’s a cause I love getting behind, not only because I love tea but it’s helps to raise funds and awareness towards people suffering from cancer. Once again, the event was hosted by Andy Reid who is the President of Balla Balla. Thankfully I found him less annoying and more entertaining this year especially with his English accent.
We had two guest speakers today, Amanda Stapleton and Heather Thorne. Amanda is the Deputy Mayor of the City of Casey as well as a Councillor. She was sharing some details about her own life story and what happiness means to her. Happiness is a choice and can lead to a healthier and more positive lifestyle. There is scientific evidence which shows the many biological and physiological impacts that happiness can have including lower levels of stress and anxiety, a stronger immune system and improved cardiovascular health. https://greatergood.berkeley.edu/article/item/six_ways_happiness_is_good_for_your_health
The second speaker, Heather, was a primary school teacher and a singer, playing at local venues such as the Cranbourne RSL. From listening to her story, I could emotionally respect and empathise with her ongoing battles with osteoarthritis and multiple intracranial aneurysms (That’s a mouthful). She shared how powerful having a positive outlook on life has been for her with a large support system in place and the joy singing brings to her life. She also sung a couple of classic songs including “You Are My Sunshine” and “Morning Town Ride”.
All the attendees were encouraged to donate as much as they could towards Cancer Council Victoria from buying raffle tickets, auctions and playing a game involving making words of four letters or more out of the phrase “Biggest Morning Tea”. The game proved to be a lot of fun for those involved including myself as I enjoy doing puzzles in my spare time. Everyone got a plate filled with small slices, cakes and sandwiches plus we welcomed to help themselves to cups of tea and/or water. http://www.ballaballa.com.au/event/the-biggest-morning-tea/
On Saturday afternoon, I attended a workshop called Boost Your Brain Power by Carolyn King held at doTERRA Australia in Mulgrave. I have to admit that I was a little concerned about coming today a) knowing that I’ll be the only male in attendance and b) potentially getting roped into buying doTerra Essential Oils. Thankfully both of these things weren’t worth worrying about. I’m used to being in female dominated social situations like at my yoga classes and Judith, the deTerra consultant, didn’t lock the door and force anyone to sing up to be a costumer (thank goodness!). https://www.doterra.com/US/en
Today’s workshop mostly focused on how to increase creativity and productivity into your life, how stress can affect the mind and the body, the left and right brain dominance, what is Kinesiology, what are Essential Oils and Reflexology of the hands. Carolyn talks us through the different types of stress, how the brain processes stress, stress based learning vs. movement based learning and neuroplasticity. https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/stress-management/in-depth/stress-symptoms/art-20050987
We all had to fill and colour in a sheet which determined which side of the eyes, ears, hands, feet and brain we are. Interestingly, most of my body parts were dominant on the right side except for the brain which showed left hemisphere dominance after I did the questionnaire. These results show that I have a dominance in logic (Profile A). https://energyconnectiontherapies.com/resources-techniques/brain-gym/brain-dominance-profile/
She also demonstrated some very helpful techniques in being able to integrate hearing, sight and our brain plus the essential oils and areas of the palm associated with these. The last part of the workshop involved doing a Brain Balance guided meditation which involved deep breathing, a body scan and something called the Emerald Green Learning Field which is similar to a “peaceful place”. https://empoweredhappiness.com/
“This is how we do it when somebody want to turn you down. You got to keep on movin'. Don't let nobody get you hit you get you down to the ground. Hear when we say.”     S.O.A.P. - This Is How We Party (1998)

MIKEY’S PERSONAL BLOG 83, December 2017
On Monday morning, Mum and I did the annual tradition of visiting the Myer Melbourne Christmas Windows and the Myer Christmas Giftorium in the city. Firstly, we went to have lunch at the 1932 Cafe & Restaurant on Collins Street. The cafe is located inside the Manchester Unity Building which is a throwback to the 1930’s Art Deco architectural style. The service and food at the cafe were both excellent. Mum and I ordered the Golden Gaytime Hotcakes with a serving of rockmelon, strawberries and blueberries. So good! http://manchesterunitybuilding.com.au/...
Next we walked over to the Melbourne Town Hall and saw the incredible (and edible) display that was the Gingerbread Village by Epicure. All of Melbourne’s iconic locations including the Melbourne Zoo, MCG, Luna Park, Albert Park lake, Flinders Street station and Federation Square had been made out of gingerbread in miniature model form. It was very detailed with lots of LED lights and people placed into each location. https://whatson.melbourne.vic.gov.au/...
After this, we ventured onto Bourke Street to check out the Myer Christmas Windows. This year’s theme centered around Elf who is trying to fit in and have the “perfect Christmas” but sadly always seems to be out of place in the world. The story is about being able to embrace and be okay with your individuality and imperfections when it comes to celebrating Christmas. Being a Monday, the queue for the windows was pretty tolerable and we had plenty of time to enjoy looking into each of the windows. https://whatson.melbourne.vic.gov.au/...
Heading up to Level 6, Mum and I had a browse through all the Christmas decorations, ornaments, cards, wrapping and stockings inside the Giftorium. Despite having a 40% off sale, most of the items were very overpriced but being Myer, I was far from surprised. Hence why this is a once-a-year trip because it’s generally out of my price range. However, I did pick up the latest Spirit of Christmas CD featuring all Australian artists including Guy Sebastian, Paul Kelly, Anthony Callea and The Wiggles.  https://www.myer.com.au/c/promotion...
On Tuesday morning, I had to say my final goodbyes to my 1998 Hyundai Excel Glx as I got the car towed away by Metro Car Removals in Dandenong. The worker seemed really disgruntled and annoyed especially when he discovered that my car won’t start at all. To say that I was feeling intensely uncomfortable would be an understatement. He opened up the bonnet to check the oil cap and radiator, shaking his head and giving off negative body language. Part of me thought the worst...that he wouldn’t even bother taking the car away.
He said he could only offer me 50 bucks. I took the offer because I just wanted to get it over with and didn’t have the energy to argue with him. I actually felt a little heartbroken watching my old car being pulled onto the tow truck. I got myself emotionally attached to it because it was part of my life for 6 years. It was just a massive relief that he actually took the car. I didn’t really care about the money so much.
On Tuesday afternoon, Mum and I went down to the Springvale Botanical Cemetery to visit her parents and my grandparents. It’s hard to believe that it’s been 15 years since my Granddad passed away and almost 4 since my Grandma passed away. It really helps to put things into perspective and appreciate how valuable your life is. Mum played a couple of Christmas songs from her phone and we placed two bunches of Dahlias into the plastic floral vases on the marble headstone.
On Thursday morning, I had some last minute errands and shopping to do at Cranbourne Park Shopping Centre and Casey Central Shopping Centre. I swear you really have to be careful driving on the roads at this time of the year especially. Drivers can just be so rude, impatient and careless. And don’t even get me started on shopping centre car parks. People reverse without looking, cut you off, don’t stop or tail gate you. Hence why I purposefully drive cautiously and get my errands and shopping done as quickly as possible.
On Thursday afternoon, I had my last appointment with my counsellor Ruth at Piece Together Counselling in Narre Warren. Today’s session was about reflection and acceptance. The past month has been chaotic to say the least and I’ve had to be okay with many things including writing my car off, dealing with financial issues, opening my first VCAT case, the stress and pressure of retail during the Christmas period and not being able to fit in as many fitness classes as I’d like this week. I think I’m learning to cut myself some slack and realise that I’m doing well when it comes to coping with the above.
Ruth also asked me about my goals for 2018. Honestly, I wasn’t feeling very mindful or focused about it but I do have a few important ones in mind. Travelling is a big one for me, to get out of my comfort zone, gain more independence and confidence, experience the world outside of where I live. In terms of my fitness goals, I’m still uncertain at this point but I do need to find a better sense of balance and figure out which trainer and gym will be a good fit for me. I also really need to buy myself a new car early in the new year.
There’s also the prospect of volunteering at an animal shelter of some kind, looking after domestic pets and getting some hands-on experience. Essentially trying to find what I have a real passion for. My blog writing and reviews could also be explored further next year and hopefully open up bigger opportunities. This year’s been one of experimentation and whilst I’ve made mistakes, I don’t regret any of it because it’s made me stronger, wiser and better.
On Friday morning, Mum and I both had haircut appointments with Katrina at Creative Hair Design in Narre Warren South. We spent about 1.5 hours catching up on the past month leading up to Christmas. Katrina’s dog Austin was boisterous and overly excited as usual but he did like a good pat whilst Tess was content just lying down in the corner near the front door.
Next I had my last appointment for the year with Dr. Yasmin Baliz at CNS: Comprehensive Neuropsychological Services in Narre Warren. Today we discussed options for the Autism Spectrum Disorder services that I could possibly look into for next year. This included several support group with Aspergers Victoria (For Young Adults) in Blackburn who hold meetings every month at a community centre. Yasmin informed me that they also organise social activities such as indoor rock climbing which could help me in the area of social development and self confidence. http://www.aspergersvic.org.au/our-...
We also talked about the NDIS (National Disability Scheme) which provides support and funding to those who are formally diagnosed on the Autism spectrum. Yasmin provided me with some information about planning my pathway, goal setting and getting my application ready for next year. The Casey-Cardinia area will be able to access the services by the start of September, 2018. It was all very overwhelming but also very helpful advice as it could help me gain more skills and independence for my future. https://www.ndis.gov.au/about-us/ou...
In the afternoon, I dropped into work for the Team Christmas Lunch. I ended up getting a large bag of Cadbury selected chocolates from our Kris Kringle which I was really pleased about. I also caught up with a few workmates in the tearoom and down in the cafe before heading off to Eden Rise. Sadly, it was far too busy to get a massage done today at Best Body Massage but by this point, I was well and truly exhausted. I could feel that I was burning the candle at both ends and needed to just go home and rest.
On Friday night, I went to the Full Moon Meditation held at YMCA Casey ARC in Narre Warren. If ever there was a time I needed to meditate, tonight was it. The moment my head hit the pillow, I was ready to doze off. Just felt so good being still and doing absolutely nothing for 45 minutes. The music was a mixture of beautiful Zen vibrations and birds chirping which was calming to listen to. Instructor Michelle guided us through the usual deep breathing, deep muscle relaxation and guided imagery of the Japanese garden and temple. https://www.trybooking.com/book/eve...
I hope that everyone has a wonderful time with family and friends on Christmas Day!
“It's the most wonderful time of the year. With the kids jingle belling and everyone telling you be of good cheer. It's the most wonderful time of the year. It's the hap-happiest season of all. With those holiday greetings and gay happy meetings when friends come to call. It's the hap-happiest season of all. There'll be parties for hosting, marshmallows for toasting and caroling out in the snow. There'll be scary ghost stories and tales of the glories of the Christmases long, long ago.” Andy Williams - It’s The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year (1963)
“And all of this happens because the world is waiting. Waiting for one child. Black, white, yellow, no-one knows. But a child that will grow up and turn tears to laughter. Hate to love, war to peace and everyone to everyone's neighbour. And misery and suffering will be words to be forgotten, forever.” Johnny Mathis - When A Child Is Born (1976)
“Joy to the world. The Lord is come. Let earth receive her King. Let every heart prepare Him room. And heaven and nature sing. And heaven and nature sing. And heaven and heaven and nature sing.” Mariah Carey - Joy To The World (1994)
