Akwa Ibom Bakkassi returnees get relief materials after 14 years in IDP camp
Tumblr media
The Akwa Ibom Bakassi Returnees and Internally Displaced Persons Cooperative Association (AKIBARCON) said since their unplanned return from Bakassi Penninsula in 2008, the Federal Government just started sending them relief materials in 2022. The President of the group, Obong Solomon Inyang, and the Secretary-General, Dr Anthony Edem, disclosed this on Monday in Oron during a flag off of distribution of fishing equipment and other relief materials to them by the federal government. They, therefore, appealed to the Federal Government to implement the Green Tree Agreement that was signed in 2006, saying that its non-implementation has adversely affected the economic and social well-being of the Bakassi returnees and internally displaced persons in the state. The group, while urging the FG to make the relief materials available on a monthly basis, decried the deplorable conditions of about, “75,000 voiceless Bakassi Returnees and Internally Displaced Persons in the state.” Presenting the items on behalf of the presidency, the Federal Commissioner, National Commission For Refugees, Migrants, and Internally displaced persons (NCFRMI), Hajia Ismali Ahmed-Suleiman, assured that her visit to the area would have a positive impact on the welfare of the refugees in the camp. She noted that the President was mindful about the welfare of Nigerians, especially the vulnerable members of the society even as she encouraged them not to lose hope because of their present condition. “I commend your orderly conduct and for being able to set a peace settlement mechanism without resorting to conflict,” she added. In his address, Mr Cajetan Iheanacho, head of office, Oron field, disclosed that, “the refugees location in Akwa Ibom State is spread over sixteen (16) Local Government Areas, but for administrative convenience, it is reduced to seven settlements”. He said there are over 1500 new arrivals (returnees) awaiting registration in the state pointing out that in Oron and Nsit Ubium alone, they have profiled 200 and 130 refugees respectively. “The NCFRMI Akwa Ibom field office in collaboration with UNHCR carried out registration exercise of the refugees in the month of September 2021. At the end of the registration, we had a total number of 1,670 registered refugees. “In Oron alone, we have over 200 profiled new arrivals awaiting registration and in Nsit Ubium we discovered over 130 refugees and profiled them. So, far in the entire state we have over 1,500 new arrivals waiting registration,” he said. Read the full article

FG restates commitment to promoting safe, orderly, regular migration
Tumblr media
The Federal Government through the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI) said it would partner relevant stakeholders to ensure safe, orderly and regular migration through the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration. The commission said government is committed to promoting safe, orderly and regular migration to reduce risks in irregular migration. A Federal Commissioner of the NCFRMI, Sen. Basheeru Mohammed, stated this in Abuja at the 2019 National Migration Dialogue. The theme of the dialogue was “localising the Global Compact for safe, orderly and regular migration (GCM) towards setting up national action plan for the implementation of the GCM”. Mohammed said in a bid to reduce the risks involved in irregular migration the commission would continue to partner relevant stakeholders to ensure safe, orderly and regular migration through the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration. According to him, Nigeria’s problem is not with migration to foreign countries but with Nigerians not taking the lead to sell the richness of every region of the country as a first priority. He added that the commission would continually collaborate with various sectors to strengthen economic stability and plan interventions that advocated renewed hope in Nigeria. He said: “each year, Nigeria loses young professionals through both irregular and regular migration to other countries where life has been sold as more prosperous than home. “Our theme this year is apt as we seek local opinions on how best to manage the Nigerian migration dynamics for the benefit of all within the framework of the recently adopted GCM. “For Nigeria, being committed to the issues of migration is an understatement. We are more committed than ever; through Nigeria’s involvement in the UN Global Compact, we have shown the highest level of political will. “Interestingly, just last week the president announced that all persons travelling to Nigeria from other African countries will have the ability to apply for visas on arrival and be admitted into the country, unlike ever before. “This is because safe, orderly and regular migration through the GCM is our goal,” he said. He also said that the commission would spend most of 2020 developing message that would address and direct citizens to the various opportunities they could take advantage of in Nigeria. “We hope to work with others to promote more migration to the continent for the growth of our local economy. “We will continue to advocate for joint bilateral agreements with all of foreign governments for the promotion of more regular migration. “This improved awareness will hopefully reduce the risks being taken by Nigerian men, women and children currently crossing the Sahara Desert and Mediterranean Sea. “The commission is also collaborating with the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs to reduce irregular migration and human trafficking. “We hope to also address the protracted displacement of Bakkasi returnees and migrants from the North-East who have migrated to the region. The commissioner expressed hope that the inter-government and bilateral partnerships would promote more regular migration as stated in GCM. He, however, said that the GCM would have no value if it did not change the lives of migrants. Similarly, Hajiya Sadiya Umar-Farouq , the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, said that global migration had continued to grow in magnitude, numbers, prospects and challenges. Umar-Farouq said that for the outgoing year, the number of international migrants increased by 51 million from the year 2000 figure. She said that migrants’ contributions to the social and economic development of their origin, destination as well as transit countries reached a record high of 698 billion dollars in 2018. “The experiences, skills, knowledge and political support migrants brought to their various home countries have added to the accelerated growth seen in some of the developing countries. “Thought as the positive impacts of migration continues to rise so do its challenges. “So we need to do more in ensuring migrants’ protection in their countries of destination while we celebrate the billions of dollars and other forms of social remittances from our Diaspora,” she said. Chief of Mission, International Organisation for Migration (IOM), Mr Franz Celestin, reiterated the organisation’s commitment to providing support as the migration issue was a collective task. He said that National Migration Dialogue was an important step for effective migration governance in Nigeria. Read the full article

Actress Caroline Danjuma, took to her IG page to call out her colleagues that failed to show up for a protest that took place in Lagos today against the current slave trade happening in Libya. ____ According to Caroline, it is not enough to post photos and condemn the act on IG, celebrities should also make an effort to take action such as engaging in protests like this to condemn the despicable act. #NCFRMI #LibyaSlaveTrade #Angel4LifeFoundation #NikkiLaoye #PrayForLibya #Libya #teampca #pcafricablog (at Lagos, Nigeria)

Libya deportees vow to hunt for ‘Charles’, others - The Nation Some Nigerians who were recently deported from Libya have said they would hunt for one Charles and others who collected money from them for the ill-fated journey to Europe. Those who spoke in Benin City were among the 168 Libya deportees that were on Tuesday received by the Edo State Government. Governor Godwin Obaseki had promised to train deportees from Libya with adequate skills required to reintegrate them back to the society. Many of the deportees looked skinny and exhausted while some woman had babies. Some of the deportees said it was one Charles that collected money from them to take them to Europe but abandoned them in Libya. They claimed that the said Charles had several bank accounts with different names through which he collect money from victims as well as operate a camp base in Libya where Nigerians are kept for days without food. A deportee who gave his name Alex Otoide said he witnessed the sale of 20 Nigeria girls in the prison where he was kept. “They sold like 20 girls in the night. It was God that save me. More than seven people died from hunger and thirst inside the prison. “Can’t you see how I look lean and hungry. I need to go for treatment. I left Nigeria with N500,000 but I spent six months in Libya jail after the man that took my money ran away. “We were 55 that left for Libya, 25 people died in the desert.” Osas Blessing said Charles was one of those they call ‘burgers’ or ‘connection man’ in the Libya route. “I gave Charles N450,000 but when I got to Libya he increased it to N600,000. He is very wicked. He does not care for human live. He is a Benin man. He will say if you die you die. He pushed us into the sea at the wrong time. I heard he just left Nigeria with new passengers to Libya. He has frustrated many Nigerians.” Another deportee who refused to give his name said another Nigerian only known as ‘Biafra’ was responsible for the many atrocities committed against migrants in Libya. #NCFRMI #LibyaSlaveTrade #Angel4LifeFoundation #NikkiLaoye #PrayForLibya #Libya (at Lagos, Nigeria)
