NBC Sports: MLB 1979-ALCS-Game 2-Anaheim Angeles @ Baltimore Orioles: Full Game
. The New Democrat Game two of the 1979 ALCS being played at the “Outdoor Insane Asylum”, as Baltimore Memorial Stadium was called. As it should’ve been being perhaps the loudest outdoor stadium in pro major league sports in America. Both for baseball and football giving, the Orioles and Colts huge home field advantages especially when they were good. This was a game that the Angels basically had…

actually the rating is very bad. As someone that is a ratings guru I can tell you the ins and outs of how ratings works for specific networks. You listed WWE Raw on the USA network that is cable my friend which is a whole different monster, also a sports telecast. 911 on the other hand is a procedural drama on one of the big 4 networks. The Big 4 consist of Fox, ABC, NBC and CBS. The Big 4 will cancel shows if they're not performing up to par and I think Fox is at the point with 911
Listen, dude (gn). You sent me five asks telling me things I already know about tv ratings saying I asked for it, which I absolutely did not, and trying to argue that Fox is disappointed and on the verge of cancelling 9-1-1, which is definitely not true.
As you can see here, 9-1-1 is at the top of the 2022-2023 average for FOX's scripted shows. Even adding in the non-scripted shows, it's doing quite well:
Reality tv is a big ratings draw, this is a well-known fact, but networks will not want to bind themselves to only one kind of show either.
Let's take a look at ratings over all networks:
Huh, would you look at that. Not too shabby by our little weewoo show! Note also the overall big dips in viewers year over year - this is not a problem isolated to 9-1-1, it's happening all across the board.
None of these ratings hold a candle to what news shows and stuff like MLB, NFL and NBA can draw for big games, but network execs are well aware of this, and trying to compare those are like comparing apples to oranges. But I did take a look at how the NBA game last Monday did on ESPN anyway: 0.59 in the key demo.
And I did compare it to RAW, for the simple reason that RAW also airs on Mondays at 8PM. We can compare it with the other big wrestling show too (as their ratings is a topic I'm more than familiar with), if you like: Smackdown on FOX on Fridays, latest numbers are a 0.63 rating, while nothing else on tv (not just cable or network, all of tv) was above 0.43.
Saying FOX is anywhere near cancelling 9-1-1 for their ratings is a ridiculous statement. Now, you are right in saying (in another of your messages) that procedural shows are at risk of the original actors wanting to move on and/or dragging out the story far longer than would be ideal, but I don't think we're at that point yet with 9-1-1. We'll know more come May when show renewals take place (and I think some of the main actors' contracts as well), but it's no use speculating about anyone leaving as there's been no indication of that yet.
Also no offense, but calling yourself a ratings guru is hilarious and makes you sound like a pro wrestling twitter user that whines in Bryan Alvarez's mentions every week when he posts the WWE and AEW ratings.
#for anyone confused by the numbers: i'm working on another post that goes into more detail regarding what the different ratings mean#and how they're measured; so that's coming#ask frida#anon#911 ratings

MLB Hopes The Push For More Black Players Will Soon Be Reflected On Rosters
Zion Rose (above) is well aware that the percentage of Black players in Major League Baseball has been on the decline for decades.
But the 18-year-old catcher from Chicago, still sweaty from a workout during MLB’s Draft Combine this week at Chase Field in Phoenix, said he’s got some news: That’s not going to be the case for long.
“You’ll see,” he said. “We’re starting to come through.”
Rose was one of more than 300 players of all backgrounds in Phoenix this week to take part in the combine, which featured workouts, interviews and games in an effort to showcase some of the game’s best amateur talent at the high school and college levels before July’s draft. MLB said that approximately 15% of the players in the showcase were Black.
The hope is that the next Aaron Judge, Mookie Betts or Andrew McCutchen will be in that bunch. Possibly several.
A recent study from The Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport at Central Florida found Black players represented just 6.2% of players on MLB opening day rosters, down from last year’s previous record low of 7.2%. Both figures are the lowest recorded in the study since it began in 1991, when 18% of players were Black. Last year’s World Series was the first since 1950 without a U.S.-born Black player.
There are tangible reasons to believe the percentage of Black players might be on the upswing soon.
Four of the first five players picked in last summer’s amateur draft were Black for the first time ever. Those four were among the hundreds who had participated in diversity initiatives such as the MLB Youth Academy, DREAM Series and the Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities (RBI) program. MLB has also pledged $150 million in a 10-year partnership with the Players Alliance. The nonprofit organization of current and former players works to increase Black involvement at all levels.
Many of those programs started several years ago, and the younger participants are starting to hit draft-eligible age. -(source: nbc news)

We had some people over to watch the Georgia-Clemson game last week, and Wynn set up shop, selling drawings (sorry, “dawlings”), tickets and a plastic robot he had made with a whiffle ball head. I am deep into my sixth book and I have never had this much creativity in my life.

I do not think there is a busier four days of the year than the four days after Labor Day. Have a great weekend, all, and remember: “Airplane!” compensates for its lack of original comic invention by its utter willingness to steal, beg, borrow, and rewrite from anywhere.

Baseball and Death
1. Dr. Anthony Fauci’s “opening pitch” at the first Major League Baseball game yesterday, July 23, of the 2020 official season, was so lame, so governmentally inefficient, that the Topps baseball card company immediately issued a special commemorative card showing him doing it.
In professional baseball, the pitcher’s mound is twenty yards away from home plate; however, Dr. Fauci (who is 79 years old) managed to land the ball only within six feet of the plate. Pitchers are held to high standards in the big leagues.
Simultaneously with news of the commemorative card (today, July 24), an MSN news item quoted Dr. Fauci as saying that he has received several “very serious threats,” presumably against his life. There was no indication whether this reaction was related to the season opener, or other causes.
2. A University of North Carolina professor, whose decades-long history of right-wing reactionary comments and Internet posts were described as “hurtful” by People magazine but “vile” by NBC, was found dead yesterday in the suburban home where he lived alone. Racism, sexism, anti-Muslim, and anything else he could think of seems to have been included. He was 55, within two weeks of retirement and about to receive half-a-million dollars from UNC as a settlement for terminating him (from his job). No cause of death has been given. Local police said an investigation is ongoing but there was “no immediate sign of foul play.”
A quick scan of related news items seemed to indicate that there may have been at least a quarter of a million people contributing their names to petitions to have this person removed (from his job). Under these circumstances, it would be interesting to see whether a veteran MLB umpire would be comfortable calling the play “fair” or “foul,” or whether any slo-mo replay would be called for.

Belated Box Score: 1979 MLB All-Star Game
Our first baseball edition of Belated Box Score comes from the 1979 All-Star Game, held in Seattle. It was the 50th ASG played, though the series only dated back 46 years as there were four seasons (1959-62) where they played two of them for some reason. This is also the first BBS where I watched the game - at least most of it - prior to writing. Of course, it came during live sports’ hiatus. Classic games are like a great old movie you stumble across while channel surfing that sucks you in for a while. Seeing stars from their younger days and coaches from their playing days. As much as baseball can seem timeless, this broadcast really felt like a product of the 70s. The uniforms, the hairstyles, the presentation and production graphics all let you know these were of the same era as Disco Demolition Night. Same week actually.
The three-year-old Mariners hosted the Midsummer Classic in the Kingdome and the nearly fifty-nine thousand folks in attendance got a show. Part of it courtesy of the baseball game. There weren’t just stars playing, 16 future Hall-Of-Famers suited up - names like Nolan Ryan, Carl Yastrzemski, George Brett, Lou Brock, Rod Carew, Reggie Jackson, Gaylord Perry, and Pete Rose, pictured above, who wore his BP shirt (let’s be real, it was a t-shirt, not a jersey) during the game. Another notable participant was Tommy John, then of the Yankees, playing five years after undergoing his namesake elbow surgery. Like Nolan Ryan, Tommy would play in the Majors past his 46th birthday.
Before the game’s actual first pitch, the ceremonial version was performed by Mariners Co-Owner and renowned entertainer, Danny Kaye, along with about 42 kids who, for some reason, all had their own ball. So catcher Darrell Porter had roughly 43 baseballs hurled toward him at once; and with those odds, one even bounced off the poor guy’s head. Danny and the kids clearly had a blast.
Also notable was the All-Star logo - basically the host team’s emblem with a star behind it. On the broadcast, they would display it next to the score and, given 1979 television technology, you could really only make out the Mariners portion of it. Without realizing what it was, I thought they were putting the M’s logo up there to remind everyone that they were playing in Seattle. Not an unreasonable misunderstanding, I’d argue.
In perhaps the most bizarre moments, at two points during the game a person from the stands ran out onto the field, momentarily stopping play. The crazy part is that NBC showed the non-nude streakers doing their “thing” each time. First was a busty blonde whom the world seemed to know as Morganna the Kissing Bandit (safe to assume she had a history). She was followed later by a generic young guy with a beard wearing normal 70s short shorts. The announcers were far less amused by him. I’m not sure exactly when networks decided against giving these competition-interrupters any airtime, but it was a fun Easter egg.
youtube
The game itself provided its own entertainment, though it was substantially less interesting. A back-and-forth affair, the NL tied it up in the eighth inning thanks to a pinch-hit home run from the Mets’ Lee Mazzilli. Then in the top of the ninth, Mazzilli, in his only All-Star season, drew a bases-loaded walk for the eventual winning run. Despite those two plate appearances directly leading to a 7-6 National League victory, it was Pittsburgh’s Dave Parker who won the game’s MVP award, being rewarded for two impressive putouts from right field. As they say, “Defense wins exhibition games.” Maybe in another lifetime, Lee.

Chillwave turns 10 years old today. Chillwave is curiously well-known among indieheads as a term but also somewhat misunderstood, maligned, and neglected. In the wake of this anniversary I began writing about its origins, its run from 2009-2011 and its subsequent influence on indie electronic music and indie music overall since. Part of this plan was to highlight the big four - not three - artists key to its sound: Washed Out, Toro Y Moi, Neon Indian and Memory Tapes. In particular I wante.

By J.J. Cooper on October 18, 2019 The Professional Baseball Agreement (PBA) between Major League Baseball and minor league teams expires at the end of the 2020 season. But if a new MLB proposal were to become reality, more than three dozen cities with affiliated minor league teams will lose those teams a year from now and thousands of minor league players will be out of work as well. The MLB proposal is just one idea at the start of what will likely be a lengthy negotiation, but the two s.

Weekly Bookie Betting Report- Sept. 26
Following this week’s NFL games, all 32 teams will get their first quarter grades. While teams such as New England, Kansas City and the Los Angeles Rams have picked up from where they left off last season, this week’s matchups take on much more importance for Philadelphia and the Los Angles Chargers in light of slower than expected starts. Related: NFL Week 3 2019 | Week in Review Private bookies trying to make the early adjustments in the betting lines in light of the early results are hoping that the favorable trends for underdogs and UNDERs on the total line carry over to this week’s results. Once each team does have a quarter of its schedule in the books, the early overreactions start to turn into more reliable betting trends moving forward. Also, it is important to pay close attention to any significant injury situations to gauge the impact on a team’s overall performance.
It is important to pay close attention to team's injury reports
Season-to-Date Football Betting Results
The early NFL betting trends have favorites winning 63.8 percent of their games straight-up with that rate dropping to 42.6 percent when you factor in the closing spread. Road favorites are tearing it up either way. In 16 games where the road team was favored, it won 73.3 percent of the time SU while covering at 62.5 percent ATS. If you are using a bookie website, you most likely already know that road underdogs covering ATS has been another hot bet with a 67.7 winning percentage. The NFL total line continues to lean towards the UNDER with 54.2 percent of the first three weeks of games staying UNDER the closing line. Keep an eye on this trend in Week 4 with that gap is beginning to close in more recent results. Through four weeks of games in the college ranks, the favorite has won 86 percent of the time SU, but the Oddsmakers have been money to drop this number down to 52.3 percent ATS. Interestingly enough, road favorites have the best winning rate ATS at 58.1 percent to mirror the same trend in the NFL. Betting the college total line, the numbers have been rather sharp as well with 51.4 percent of the games staying UNDER. For any bookies tracking this year’s Westgate Las Vegas NFL SuperContest to get a feel for where most of the action is going, the Los Angeles Rams topped last week’s list with 1474 picks. Seattle was next on the list at 988 with Detroit rounding out the Top 3 with 937 picks.
Early NFL Week 4 Consensus Picks
As far as the NFL Week 4 games, the early betting consensus is leaning heavily towards the 3-0 Kansas City Chiefs (86%) as 6.5-point road favorites against the 2-0-1 Detroit Lions. The 3-0 New England Patriots (82%) are seven-point road favorites in an AFC East clash against the 3-0 Buffalo Bills. In a pair of late starts on Sunday afternoon, Seattle (-5 against Arizona) and Minnesota (+2 against Chicago) are next on the list 74%.
This Weekend’s Big Betting Games
The final weekend of the MLB regular season is highlighted by a three-game set between the Chicago Cubs and the St. Louis Cardinals. The Cubs are out of the playoffs but they can play the role of spoiler as the Cardinals try and nail down the NL Central Division title. The Milwaukee Brewers have clinched a playoff spot and they are 1.5 games in back of St. Louis in the standings. Milwaukee will wrap up its season with three road games against Colorado.
The Cubs have been reduced to the spoiler role Saturday’s college football schedule is highlighted by pair of head-to-head matchups at 3:30 p.m. between nationally ranked teams. No. 18 Virginia will be on the road as a 12.5-point underdog against No. 10 Notre Dame on NBC. Over on FOX in a Pac-12 showdown, No. 21 USC goes on the road to face No. 17 Washington. The Huskies are favored by 10.5 points. Read the full article

NBC Sports: MLB 1985-GOW-6/22-New York Yankees @ Detroit Tigers: Full Game
. Source:The Daily Journal 1985 is the perfect example of why MLB should’ve went to the three division format in both the American and National League with the playoff wildcards well before 1994. Because you had four ninety win teams in 1985 and each division champion would’ve had at least ninety wins. The Toronto Blue Jays in the AL East, Kansas City Royals in the AL Central, and the Anaheim…
