NBA Central Division has Pacers and Cavs eager to build on momentum while Bucks hope to stay healthy
A look at each team in the Central Division in predicted order of finish:
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Tyrese Haliburton and the Indiana Pacers want to show their run to the Eastern Conference finals last year was no fluke. Indiana made its first playoff appearance since 2020 last season and had the longest postseason run of any Central Division team since Giannis Antetokounmpo led the Milwaukee Bucks to the 2021 title. The fact the Pacers did that as a No. 6 seed explains why…

NBA Realignment Proposal
This is Tumblr—a place where you can be who and what you wish to be. Today I take advantage of that to bring to you an idea that I think will solve a couple of dire problems the National Basketball Association (an American professional sporting association for basketball) has been struggling with in recent years. The problems are two-fold:
(1) Division championships are meaningless. In the old days if you won your division, you earned a top seed. When there were two division, the division winner with the best record got the 1 seed, and the other division winner the 2. It didn't matter if there was a second (or even third) place team that had a better record: winning your division meant you earned a top seed. A good example is the 1991-92 season, where the Chicago Bulls (67-15) earned the top seed, but the 51-31 Boston Celtics earned the second seed as winners of the Atlantic Division, despite the fact that the Cleveland Cavaliers had a much better record at 57-25. Winning the division was incredibly important. Now teams are seeded by record throughout the conference. Division titles mean nothing.
(2) Super teams. Since divisions are meaningless but winning chamiponships is still the most important thing in the NBA, successful players go to teams that can pay the most money. The ones that have the most money are the teams that are most successful. With only two conferences, this usually results in two teams—one in the east, one in the west—being stacked. Players can either join that team or try to form another super team to rival them. And the ones that can rival them are other historically successful teams. All in all, it's a lack of parity, and the same teams winning every single time.
Now, it is assumed, amongst fans and sportswriters, that the league will eventually expand to Seattle, regaining their former Supersonics, and Las Vegas—the latter perhaps when LeBron James retires (he's expressed interest in being an owner for a team in Las Vegas in future). If that comes to pass (and no other teams change locations), I propose a radical realignment of the divisions, and concomitant playoff changes. These changes were inspired by the changes the NHL made in recent years. They had six divisions, like the NBA has now, but then when they expanded, went backward, to four divisions, and the results have been impressive.
If you need to refresh yourselves of the current alignment, you can do so here. Now here's the realignment I propose:
These are the four divisions the NBA had before expanding to six. Most of the membership is the same, but I'll note the discrepancies. First, the most easterly western conference team, the Memphis Grizzlies, has been moved to the east (I always found it absurd that a team in a state one state away from the Atlantic Ocean was in the western conference). The Toronto Raptors and Charlotte Hornets have been swapped, which makes geographic sense, and the Atlanta Hawks have been returned to the Central.
This gives us four divisions with eight teams each. Currently, ten teams from each conference go to the playoffs—kind of. Four teams in each conference are forced into a mini-tournament called the play-in. For this play-in, the 7th place team hosts the 8th place team and the 9th place team hosts the 10th place team in a one game playoff. The winner of the first game becomes the real 7th seed. The loser of the first game plays the winner of the second. The winner of that game becomes the real 8th seed. Then the playoffs proceed as they always have. Very strange.
I propose something radically different. Same number of playoff teams—even the same number of play-in teams—but it's all done inside the division:
Each division has its own playoff. The 4th and 5th place teams play each other for the right to take on the top place team in the division in the first round of the divisional series. Then the 2nd place team hosts the 3rd place team in the division. The winners of each series face off, the winner being crowned the ultimate division champion. Then the western and eastern conference division champions face off, resulting in conference champions, who face off in the finals. The bracket looks like this:
This means that one team from every division will always make it to the semifinals. Division championships are suddenly very important, and there's incentive for good players to try their luck on teams in different divisions if they can't make it in the division they're in. It takes two very large pools (the conferences) and separates them into four smaller pools. It will also ensure you get some nice, exciting playoff matchups in the early going, because every matchup is all but guaranteed to be a rivalry, as the matchups are always interdivision matchups.
For the curious, if this had happened for last season, it would've looked like this (less the two expansion teams):
Same exact playoff teams! And the first matchups would've looked like this:
Some of the matchups are the same, but we get some good ones earlier. Mavs-Pelicans would've been a lot spicier than Thunder-Pelicans. In general, we've got a lot better shot at getting better matchups earlier on, and good matchups at each stage. This is the NBA I want to see!
Thank you for coming to the Dothraki guy's Tumblr account.

Clarence Edward Gaines (May 21, 1923 - April 18, 2005) known as “Big House” for his large frame, winning was a habit that led him to the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame. His name would become well known in the community in which he coached for almost fifty years.
He was born in Paducah, Kentucky to Olivia and Lester Gaines. He was the salutatorian at Lincoln High School in Paducah and matriculated at Morgan State University. It was there he earned the nickname “Big House.” The legend goes that he was told by a business manager at the school, “I never seen anything bigger than you but a house.” The name would stick.
He was a three-sport athlete in football, basketball, and track. His best sport was football, where he received All-American honors. He graduated from Morgan State with a BS in Chemistry. He had plans to attend dental school but was convinced to put those plans aside temporarily by Eddie Hurt, one of his college coaches. Hurt connected him with Brutus Wilson, an alumnus of Morgan State, who was a coach at Winston-Salem Teacher’s College. He could coach both football and basketball.
Winston-Salem State University served as a football and basketball coach, athletic director, ticket manager, and trainer. He was recognized for his success when the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association named him football coach of the year.
Over a coaching career that spanned five decades, he won a Division II National Championship in 1967 and was named CIAA coach of the year in basketball five times. His record stood at 828-447. Only four men’s basketball coaches had won more games.
His teams won 20 or more games in 18 different seasons. He admitted that the reverse of Jim Crow laws had hindered his team. He believed that he was able to recruit talented Black players in the Jim Crow era more easily because he coached at an HBCU. He was notable for coaching some well-known individuals including future NBA star Earl Monroe and current ESPN commentator Stephen A. Smith.
He was a member of Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity. He was survived by his wife, Clara. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence #sigmapiphi #omegapsiphi

79-80 Phoenix Suns: Phoenix achieved a franchise-best 55-27 record. Paul Westphal led the team in scoring, earning All-NBA First Team honors. Swingman and fellow All-star Walter Davis, along with Don Buse, Truck Robinson, and Alvin Adams provided key contributions to the team’s success.
71-72 Chicago: The Bulls finished a then-franchise best 57-25, behind a rugged defense led by Jerry Sloan and Norm Van Lier. The duo Chet Walker and Bob Love provided the scoring punch.
76-77 Denver: In Denver’s first year in the NBA, after merging from the ABA, the Nuggets won 50 games behind NBA All-Defense forward Bobby Jones and All-NBA guard David Thompson.
75-76 Cleveland: This historically significant season marked the Cavs’ first-ever winning record, their debut in the playoffs, and their advancement to the conference finals. Dubbed the “Miracle at Richfield,” this exceptional season prompted an overwhelming show of support from fans. Cleveland utilized a well-balanced attack, featuring seven players who averaged double digit scoring per game.
74-75 Buffalo: The Braves boasted a record of 49–33, which would endure for 37 years as the franchise’s winningest season. Bob McAdoo’s led the league in scoring with 34.5 points per game, earning him the MVP Award.
78-79 San Antonio: All NBA first teamer George “The Iceman” Gervin led the league in scoring and helped propel the team to a first-place finish in the NBA’s Central Division. The Spurs eventually bowed out of the playoffs, losing in the Eastern Conference Finals.
75-76 Golden State: This Warrior team won a then franchise best 59 games, a record that would not be surpassed for nearly 40 years. All- NBA selections Rick Barry and Phil Smith provided firepower and tenacity at both ends of the court.
79-80 Atlanta: The Hawks, coached by Hubie Brown, finished the NBA regular season in 1st place in the Eastern Conference Central Division with a 50-32 record, behind an impressive defense. Dan Roundfield was named to the All-NBA Second Team and all NBA-Defensive First Team, while guard Eddie Johnson was named to the NBA-Defensive Second Team.
79-80 Philadelphia: The 76’ers won 59 regular season games and advanced to the NBA finals. NBA legend Julius Erving, “Dr. J,” provided efficient scoring and dazzling athleticism as displayed in his famous baseline scoop move during the finals: Dr. J Baseline Scoop. All-NBA Defensive First Teamer Bobby Jones, along with Caldwell Jones and Maurice Cheeks, led a stout defense, ranked number one in the league.
74-75 Washington: In the inaugural year after changing the franchise name from the Capital Bullets to the Washington Bullets, Washington posted a franchise best record of 60–22 and won the Eastern Conference finals. This team featured All NBA selections Elvin Hayes and Phil Chenier, and the league’s best defense.
77-78 Portland: The Blazers started the season with a blistering 50-10 record, before a season-ending injury to league MVP, Bill Walton. Though Portland faltered the rest of the way, including the post-season, a healthy Walton instantly transforms this squad into one of the more formidable teams included in this set. Other key Blazers included Maurice Lucas, named to both the All-NBA and All-NBA defensive teams, and All-NBA Defensive selections Bob Gross and Lionel Hollins.
78-79 Seattle: The Supersonics avenged their previous year’s NBA Finals loss by defeating Washington in five games, winning their first and only NBA championship. Dennis Johnson was named the NBA Finals MVP and named to the NBA ALL-Defensive First Team. Other notable players on this defensive-minded squad included Gus Williams and Jack Sikma.
72-73 New York: The Knicks captured their second, and last (to date) NBA Championship, behind the play of a deep squad, including several Hall-of Famers: Walt Frazier, Earl “The Pearl” Monroe, Dave DeBusschere, Willis Reed, and Bill Bradley.
72-73 Boston: The Celtics finished with a franchise record 68 wins, behind the play of league MVP Dave Cowens and First Team All-NBA selection John Havlicek. All-NBA defenders Paul Silas and Don Chaney, along with Cowens and Havlicek, led the top-ranked Celtics defense.
71-72 Los Angeles: This Laker team is widely regarded as one of the best all-time teams, finishing the regular season with a 69-13 record and capturing the NBA championship. The team’s 69 wins was an all- time record that would last for 25 years. The teams’ performance included a 33-game win streak, which still stands as all-time best. The 71-72 roster features NBA greats Wilt Chamberlain and Jerry West.
70-71 Milwaukee: League and Playoff MVP Kareem Abdul-Jabbar led the Bucks to a 66-16 regular season record and the franchise’s first NBA championship. Though a bit beyond his prime, Hall-of-Famer Oscar Robertson led the team in assists, and was second only to Abdul-Jabbar in minutes played and points. The Bucks won 20 straight games, good for fifth all-time.

By The Associated Press MILWAUKEE BUCKS Last season: 58-24, lost to Miami Heat in first round of Eastern Conference playoffs. Coach: Adrian Griffin, first season. In a world where the meek shall inherit the Earth, one division is bucking the trend and taking matters into their own hands. The Central Division of the NBA is a force to be reckoned with, and they're not afraid to let their opponents know it.
Led by the likes of the Chicago Bulls, the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Milwaukee Bucks, the Central Division is a powerhouse of the NBA. These teams are used to winning, and they're not afraid to show it.
Their opponents know it, too. When the Central Division teams come to town, they bring with them a level of intensity and physicality that can be intimidating.
The Central Division teams are known for their tough defense and their ability to take control of a game. They're not afraid to get physical and make their opponents work for every point.
Their opponents know that if they want to beat the Central Division teams, they're going to have to work hard. They're not going to give up without a fight.
The Central Division is a force to be reckoned with, and they're not afraid to show it. They're the team to beat in the NBA.
