you can tell i was so fucking excited to ramble because of my use of caps. anyway.

The game starts you off as Morgan Yu, the younger sibling (you can choose either male or female, but i’ll go with second person because this game is so good at making it feel like it’s you) of Alex Yu, and the child of two extraordinarily wealthy board members of a space program called TranStar. You start off the game being told that you’ve been chosen to run a few tests for your brother to eventually go up on TranStar’s space station, Talos I. Pretty ordinary. You wake up in your bedroom, fly in your private helicopter across San Franscisco, and arrive with your brother to get some tests done. They ask you.. weird questions. Hide in this room, as fast as you can. Move these boxes, as fast as you can, touching them as little as possible. What do you see in the glass?

It’s normal, up until you watch something slimy and black take the form of a coffee cup. The guy who’s taking your answers picks it up, and it attacks him.

You fall asleep. And wake up, realizing you are already on Talos I, and something has gone terribly wrong.

SPOILERS (ask me about my obsessions)

You’re told, that Morgan - you - has been running copies of this experiment for months with Alex. Waking up in a real room, going to TranStar HQ in a real helicopter but in a simulated room, and running these tests. Your memory gets wiped at the end of each experiment, and you’re given new powers. Strange powers. Alien powers. They change your identity, the way you think, with personality fluctuations until Alex barely recognizes you anymore. 

You also have a little bestie floating robot “Operator” named January, who you, Morgan, made a couple of runs of experiments ago. January is your backup you and is your guiding moral compass for better or worse. Morgan made January when you didn’t trust Alex to keep you safe anymore, to serve as a backup check-in on reality. You also have another bestie Operator named December, who January murders, because that was a Morgan who was trying to tell you how to escape. January thinks you should blow up Talos I for the good of mankind. Up to you to decide who’s the real Morgan.

Backstory. TranStar made most of its money selling advanced memory chips called Neuromods, where you learn a language or proficiency in a musical instrument instantaneously. Neuromods also give you strength. And they also wipe your memory from the moment of implantation the second you take them out, no matter how much you knew. Say, you got yourself a Neuromod that gave you the ability to telepathically move boxes, and also that this experiment was happening. When that Neuromod was removed, so was that knowledge. Fucking crazy, right?

Plot. Talos I is infested with monsters called Typhons, alien lifeforms that Talos I was studying in order to figure out their abilities, and implant it into people. These things are black, slimy, spiderlike and multilegged, with no discernable eyes and function in a hivemind. They function by duplicating themselves when they eat, or resurrect human corpses into Typhon organisms called Phantoms. Creatures that repeat not only their host’s last words, but any last words the hive mind has access to.

TANGENT, some of my favorite fucking dialogue is through the Phantoms’ dialogue. They mutter to themselves while on patrol in nearby areas, and have different dialogue when they see you, are looking for you, or are attacking you. My favorites are: “Shh… someone’s coming.” / “Are you alone? Are you… angry?” / “I used to wish we weren’t alone in the universe.” I love that the Phantoms take the fear of imminently dying humans, some dialogue explicitly said right before the surviving crew members died, as echoed refrains by the enemy. Gorgeous. Absolutely stellar environmental storytelling. Tangent over.

You are an active threat against the Typhon, and is the only crew member seen to be able to actively defend yourself against the alien threat. You can take Neuromods and give yourself Typhon abilities, eventually making yourself Typhon enough that Talos security systems attack you on sight. My favorite instance is after Morgan is done rummaging through the crew quarters and comes back out to the arboretum, you meet the Nightmare, a specifically crafted Typhon organism whose only purpose is to find you and kill you. It shrieks when it sees you, never moving far away. It has a minimum respawn time of 20 minutes (real-life twenty minutes it has to wait before it can respawn) and lasts for three minutes real-time before it despawns with a timer in the top left. Your only options are to survive or kill it. And the best part is that it was made just for you.

You meet several people whose survival hinges entirely on you. A scientist, trapped inside of a cargo box that ejected during the outbreak, and you have the choice to bring him inside or open the airlock, killing him instantly; to save or let die an entire group of survivors including their security chief, who never really liked you anyway; a woman who hates you and your brother, but she’s asked you to kill a man who killed her girlfriend, entirely unprovoked and because he could in the madness of the Typhon outbreak; and a woman who lied about her medical diagnoses to be able to be on Talos, an ex-lover of yours who didn’t know about your experiments and wonders why you forgot about her, who you can save. A person you don’t remember, who you can save. You meet Alex, and he begs you to consider the you Morgan used to be. Don’t you remember?

You don’t.

The most fun part of the game is the subversion of expectations, very similar to me like the Last of Us with Prey’s antagonists. You’re fighting against the Typhon the entire time, but near end-of-game, your parents have heard about the mess that Talos I has become, and they’re going to shut it down by bringing guns for hire and slaughtering everyone on Talos I, including you and Alex. It’s for the better. Can’t have news escaping about what a fuck up Talos I has become, after all. (And what you do with Dahl depends on who you’ve kept alive. I’m a very conscience-heavy person, so I kept everyone that I could keep alive, alive. They helped me rewire Dahl’s memories to forget Morgan’s parents’ order and not murder everyone. Up to you. You can murder that sonofabitch.)

Walther Dahl becomes an end-of-game antagonist that gives you a lovely amount of endings. You can either escape Talos I by using Alex’s executive escape pod much earlier, abandoning everyone to die; you can either sit with Talos I and destroy it and yourself, while making sure everyone gets off of it; or you can find a way to nullify the Typhon hivemind, and leaving Talos I unharmed, while still being able to get off of that goddamned space station.

Prey is such a good fucking game. It really tears apart the lines of what is you and what you can ethically define as yourself. You are, fundamentally, alone. No one can fight the Typhon like you can, and even if they could, they don’t know the Typhon like you do. The Typhon don’t talk to them like it talks to you. There’s an excellent dialogue sequence in which you find a recording of yourself talk about a dream you have. You’re staring into this inky blackness between the stars, invisible, but something’s there. You see it. It sees you. And it hates you.

Is it right if you use Typhon abilities, that probably was torn out of Typhons through unethical experiments, and Neuromods tested on unwilling experimentees? Do you deserve to reap what you did not sow? And are you really that different, anyway? When they look at you, are you human too, or just pretending?

anyway listen to semi sacred geometry (it’s on spotify too but this is the version in the game) or may I suggest, into the tunnels? the first time I went into the GUTS, oh my god, I think I cried

Ok so I've been told that I'm VERY intimidating???? Literally all my friends after covid came up to me and were like they were very scared to speak to me cause they thought I was scary??? I think that's cause I'm VERY quiet in classes and I literally don't speak a word to anyone except my friends. It's not that I don't want to speak to them or wtv. I just don't like interacting with people when not necessary if that makes sense. But I've also been told that I look lost all the time 💀💀 so make of that what you will

Very very honestly? I can NEVER remember my dreams so gonna have to pass on this one 😭

Channel ORANGE by frank ocean. I found that album in a time where it completely consumed me as a whole and really transformed me as a person. I could literally listen to it on repeat for the rest of my life and not get bored. Songs like Sierra Leone, thinking about you, super rich kids, bad religion, pyramids. If you want to know what kind of a person I am, the kind to listen to pyramids on loop during my workout. So, ball my eyes out to bad religion in the shower. To giggle over super rich kids.
