BOC-NAIA, PDEA, and NAIA-IADITG Intercept P45.9M Shabu in Pasay City
August 3, 2023
The Bureau of Customs – Ninoy Aquino International Airport (BOC-NAIA), through a joint operation with the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) and NAIA-Inter-Agency Drug Interdiction Task Group, intercepted an inbound shipment containing Shabu (Methamphetamine Hydrochloride) with an estimated street value of P45,900,000 on August 2, 2023, at the Paircargo Warehouse in Pasay City.
The subject shipment was declared as “African Cultura” from Dubai, UAE, and originally from Johannesburg, South Africa, addressed to a certain consignee in Makati City via Emirates Airlines flight number EK 0336.
Upon x-ray screening and physical examination by the Paircargo Assessment team, it was discovered to have pillow cases, blankets, nuts, seeds, and jumbo peanuts concealing white crystalline substances.
PDEA laboratory testing confirmed that the white crystalline substances were “Shabu” or methamphetamine hydrochloride, a dangerous drug as defined by Republic Act 9165 or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002. All pieces of evidence were turned over to PDEA for safekeeping and further investigation.
In line with BOC Commissioner Bienvenido Y. Rubio’s priority programs, the BOC-NAIA, under the leadership of its District Collector, Atty. Yasmin O. Mapa, remains vigilant in its border protection efforts.#

The remains of Naia are the most complete ancient skeleton that have been found to date in the Americas. Mitochondrial DNA extracted from the skeleton’s wisdom tooth found it belonged to haplogroup D, found in about 11 percent of living American Indians. This has helped to settle the debate as to whether living Native Americans are descended from Paleoindians (Ancient Indians). Part of the reason there was a debate about this at all, was that early Paleoindian remains did not have Northeast Asian facial features, which was to be expected under the prevailing Bering Strait Theory of early Indian migrations which presumes Indians and Northeast Asians are closely related.

.
Genetic testing
Genetic testing indicated a genetic link between Paleoamericans and modern indigenous peoples of the Americas as testing found MtDNA haplotype D1. Haplogroup D (mtDNA) is believed to have arisen in Asia. D1 is also found in Central Asia and is one of the founding lineages in the Americas. Subhaplogroup D1 occurs in 10.5% of extant Native Americans, with highest frequency of 29% in indigenous people from Chile and Argentina.
The report concluded that "HN5/48 shows that the distinctive craniofacial morphology and generalized dentition of Paleoamericans can co-occur with a Beringian derived mtDNA haplogroup. This 13–12 ka Paleoamerican skeleton thus suggests that Paleoamericans represent an early population expansion out of Beringia, not an earlier migration from elsewhere in Eurasia. This is consistent with hypotheses that both Paleoamericans and Native Americans derive from a single source population, whether or not all share a lineal relationship ... the differences in craniofacial form between Native Americans and their Paleoamerican predecessors are best explained as evolutionary changes that postdate the divergence of Beringians from their Siberian ancestors."

Peñon Woman III was found on an island in the middle of Lake Texcoco.
The skeleton's age has been estimated by radiocarbon dating by Silvia Gonzalez of Liverpool John Moores University.[3] Her 14C date is 10,755±55 years[2] (12,705 cal years) BP.
She is one of the oldest human remains found in the Americas.
Gonzalez theorizes that Peñon woman is related to the historic Pericú people of Baja California, who also shared similar physical traits.

That Time Forgot: Chrysler Thunderbolt
I have a thing for old concept cars and castings Hot Wheels appears to have forgotten about over the years. So, why not combine them into a single segment? Our first installment of this segment talks about the Chrysler Thunderbolt, Chrysler’s halo car design for the 1990s that never came to be. I got the idea for this from a Motor1 segment that runs every so now and then known as “Concept We Forgot”, so might as well credit it now before we get on with it.
Tumblr media
The Thunderbolt was a front-mid-engined concept car designed in 1993 by GM designer Tom Gale, intended to be Chrysler’s halo car. According to Neil Walling, Chrysler's director of advanced and international design at the time, DaimlerChrysler had a program where they wanted to do a car that would be the epitome of each of their marques; these marques were Plymouth, Dodge, Jeep, and of course, Chrysler. The cars that came out of this design program were the Plymouth Prowler, Jeep Ecco, Dodge Viper and the Chrysler Thunderbolt.
Tumblr media
First presented at the 1993 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the Thunderbolt stole the show at the DaimlerChrysler booth. The Thunderbolt was also fully functional; it was based on a lengthened LH platform that was used in the Concorde, Intrepid and 300M and was powered by an experimental 4.0L 32-valve V8 designed by Chrysler’s engineering chief at the time, François Castaing. The engine generated 270 BHP and was essentially a more advanced version of the engine found in the Eagle Optima. The transmission was a four-speed automatic, and ABS, four-wheel disc brakes and traction control were standard.
Tumblr media
The car was hand-built by a company known as Metalcrafters, which took the car from a one-fifth scale model built by Chrysler to reality within a span of eight months. The car was built of real steel and glass, with no plastic or fiberglass to be found. The engine was stuffed in the front; one half of the engine was in the actual hood secton, with the other half under the dashboard, making this a front-mid-engined car. The lines of the Thunderbolt were made to be somewhat reminiscent of the original 1941 Thunderbolt concept, which this concept recycled the name of.
Tumblr media
The interior for the Thunderbolt was highly advanced for the time, featuring power seats and enough legroom at the rear to comfortably seat four. An on-board infotainment system was also provided, including satellite navigation and a computer with video games. The cab forward design of the Thunderbolt helps to add to the legroom as well. At the rear, the car’s distinctive double bubble canopy also showed.
Tumblr media
After being presented at the NAIAS in 1993, the car may have gone on to be displayed at a number of auto shows, before finding its permanent residence at the Walter P. Chrysler Museum; with the closure of the museum in 2016, however, the Thunderbolt was subsequently moved into storage, and its current location remains unknown.
Tumblr media
Now, about the casting. The small-scale Thunderbolt was designed by a man you may have heard of: Mark Jones. Jones originally joined Mattel in 1986 but began designing Hot Wheels around 1993; some of the castings he designed include the following:
• Bugatti Veyron (2003 First Editions, 2003 – 2010) • Corvette SR-2 (2002 First Editions, 2001 – 2012) • Enzo Ferrari (2003 First Editions, 2003 – 2014) • Ferrari 250 LM (2007 First Editions, 2007 – 2009) • Flathead Fury (2005 Acceleracers: Metal Maniacs, 2005 – 2016) • Ground FX (2003 First Editions, 2003 – Present) • Hyper Mite (2001 First Editions, 2001 – 2013) • Mazda 787B (2018 Car Culture: Circuit Legends, 2018 – Present) • Nissan Silvia (S15) (2018 HW Entertainment: Forza Motorsport, 2018 – Present) • Pipe Jammer (1993 First Editions, 1993 – 1996) • Prototipo Alfa Romeo B.A.T. 9 (2006 First Editions: Realistix, 2006 only) • Volkswagen Käfer Racer (2017 New Models: HW Speed Graphics, 2017 – Present)
Jones left the Hot Wheels design team circa 2005 to go to Matchbox’s design team to design cars for the Real Working Rigs and SkyBusters lines, only to return to Hot Wheels in 2014, where he currently designs for the mainline and Premium lines.
This small scale replica of the Thunderbolt was introduced in 1998, alongside thirty-nine other models, such as the ‘65 Impala, Tow Jam, Customized C3500, Mustang Mach 1 and the Dairy Delivery. It was introduced in a silver paintscheme replicating that of the real Thunderbolt, with purple windows. From my examination, the Thunderbolt’s sloping roof section is plastic and appears to be snapped onto the windows. The rear of the double bubble canopy features the Hot Wheels logo cast in.
Tumblr media
Sometime between 1999 and 2001, the base was changed, now featuring copyright information pertaining to the Dodge Car Company; it appears that it was around the ‘00s where copyright or trademark information pertaining to a car manufactured by a certain few manufacturers had to be added to the bottom of the base was mandated (i.e. “TM GM”, “DCC” or “Chrysler Group LLC”).
Tumblr media
The casting received a total of eight releases, with the last release of this casting being in 2003 under the Highway 35: World Race series under the Wave Rippers team. Under its Wave Rippers guise, the car was given a number of embellishments in terms of specifications and performance figures; the cartoon version produces 670 BHP from an experimental V10 mated to conceal worm-drive propellers.
This casting has not been seen since its Wave Rippers release, although it was never officially retired under the Final Run Series (which has been on hiatus since 2006). It’s likely that this casting has been quietly retired, and will most likely never be seen again.
Now, I’m a big fan of the Thunderbolt, with its absolutely unique styling, but this was not easy to write about since the history of the Thunderbolt is so scattered. However, I hope this helps to provide the viewer with at least some history of the Thunderbolt, with all the various sources I could string up over the web.

Versetzt euch bitte mal in meine Lage!

Lou Brock
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Louis Clark Brock (born June 18, 1939) is an American former professional baseball player. He began his 19-year Major League Baseball (MLB) career playing in 1961 for the Chicago Cubs, and spent the majority of his career playing as a left fielder for the St. Louis Cardinals. He was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1985 and the St. Louis Cardinals Hall of Fame in 2014. He is currently a special instructor coach for the St. Louis Cardinals.
Brock was best known for breaking Ty Cobb's all-time major league stolen base record in 1977. He was an All-Star for six seasons and a National League (NL) stolen base leader for eight seasons. He led the NL in doubles and triples in 1968. He also led the NL in singles in 1972, and was the runner-up for the NL Most Valuable Player Award in 1974.
Early life
Brock was born in El Dorado, Arkansas, to a family of sharecroppers. His family moved to Collinston, Louisiana, when he was two years old. While his family didn't have much money, he said that he never felt poor because, "If you don't have something, you don't miss it." Brock grew up as a fan of the Brooklyn Dodgers, the team that included Jackie Robinson, Don Newcombe and Roy Campanella. Although he didn't play in organized baseball until he reached the 11th grade, he learned much about the sport from listening to Cardinals radio broadcaster Harry Caray describe the way major league hitters stood at the plate. After attending high school in Mer Rouge, Louisiana, he received academic assistance to attend Southern University in Baton Rouge, but when a low grade in his first semester meant the possibility of losing his scholarship, he decided to try out for the school's baseball team in order to secure an athletic scholarship.
Baseball career
College and the minor leagues
Brock hit for a .189 batting average in his first year of college baseball, but improved the following year to hit for a .500 average. Southern University won the NAIA baseball championship during his junior year, and Brock was selected for the United States baseball team in the 1959 Pan American Games. When Brock decided to try for a professional baseball career, he traveled to St. Louis to try out for the Cardinals, but the scout who had recommended him was in Seattle to sign Ray Washburn. He then decided to try out for the Chicago Cubs, who signed him as an amateur free agent in 1960. Assigned to play for the St. Cloud Rox, Brock won the 1961 Northern League batting championship with a .361 batting average. It would be his only season in minor league baseball as the Cubs decided to promote him to the major leagues.
Chicago Cubs
Brock made his major league debut with the Cubs on September 10, 1961, at the age of 22. In his rookie season of 1962, Brock became one of four players to hit a home run into the center-field bleachers at the old Polo Grounds in New York since its 1923 reconstruction. His blast came against Al Jackson in the first game of a June 17 doubleheader against the New York Mets and was one of two that would clear the wall in consecutive days, with Hank Aaron's coming the very next day. Joe Adcock was the first to hit a ball over that wall, in 1953. Babe Ruth reached the old bleachers (a comparable distance) before the reconstruction. Brock was not known as a power hitter, but he did display significant power from time to time.
Brock was blessed with great speed and baserunning instincts, but the young right fielder failed to impress the Cubs management, hitting for only a combined .260 average over his first two seasons. In 1964 after losing patience with his development, the Cubs gave up on Brock and made him part of a trade with the St. Louis Cardinals. The June 15 deadline deal for pitcher Ernie Broglio saw Brock, Jack Spring, and Paul Toth head to St. Louis for Broglio, Bobby Shantz, and Doug Clemens. Cardinals general manager Bing Devine specifically sought Brock at the insistence of Cardinals' manager Johnny Keane to increase team speed and solidify the Cardinals' lineup, which was struggling after the retirement of left fielder Stan Musial in 1963. At the time, many thought the deal was a heist for the Cubs. Broglio had led the National League in wins four years earlier, and had won 18 games the season before the trade.
St. Louis Cardinals
After Brock was traded to the Cardinals, his career turned around significantly. He moved to left field and batted .348 and stole 38 bases for the remainder of the 1964 season. At the time of the trade, the Cardinals were 28–31, in eighth place in the National League, trailing even the Cubs, who were 27–27 and in sixth place. Brock helped the Cardinals storm from behind to capture the National League pennant on the last day of the season. Four months to the day after Brock's trade, the Cardinals would win the 1964 World Series in seven games over the favored New York Yankees, who were appearing in their fourteenth World Series in sixteen years (and their last until a dozen years later). Brock's contributions to the Cardinals' championship season were recognized when he finished in tenth place in voting for the 1964 National League Most Valuable Player Award. Meanwhile, Broglio won only seven games for the Chicago Cubs before retiring from baseball after the 1966 season. To this day, the trade of Brock for Broglio is considered one of the most lopsided deals in baseball history.
In 1966, Brock ended Maury Wills' six-year reign as the National League's stolen base champion with 74 steals. In David Halberstam's book, October 1964, the author states that manager Johnny Keane asked Brock to forgo hitting home runs in favor of the stealing bases. Brock went on to lead the National League in stolen bases eight times within a nine-year span between 1966 and 1974 (former teammate Bobby Tolan led the league in steals in 1970). Brock began the 1967 season by hitting 5 home runs in the first four games of the season, becoming the first player to do so (Barry Bonds would tie this record in 2002). He was hitting for a .328 average by mid-June to earn the role as the starting left fielder for the National League in the 1967 All-Star Game. After suffering through a mid-season slump, he recovered to finish the season with a career-high 206 hits and a .299 batting average while leading the league in stolen bases and runs scored as the Cardinals won the National League pennant by ten and a half games. Brock became the first player to steal 50 bases and hit 20 home runs in the same season. In the 1967 World Series, Brock hit for a .414 average, scored 8 runs and set a World Series record with seven stolen bases as the Cardinals defeated the Boston Red Sox in seven games.
The Cardinals won the National League pennant for a second consecutive year in 1968 as Brock once again led the league in stolen bases as well as in doubles and triples. In the 1968 World Series against the Detroit Tigers, Brock had three stolen bases in Game 3 and contributed a double, triple, home run and four runs batted in during Game 4 to help the Cardinals build a three-game to one advantage over the Tigers. The Cardinals appeared to be on the verge of winning a second consecutive World Series, going into the fifth inning of Game 5 with a 3–2 lead. Although Brock's base running abilities had proven to be a factor in the previous four games, his carelessness may have cost the Cardinals a run. After Brock had hit a double, he tried to score standing up on Julián Javier's single to left, but Willie Horton threw him out with a strong throw to home plate. Detroit rallied for three runs in the seventh inning as Mickey Lolich shut out the Cardinals for the final eight innings to win the game for the Tigers. In Game 7, Brock had another crucial miscue when he was picked off base by Lolich, extinguishing a possible Cardinals rally. The Tigers rallied from being down three games to one behind the excellent pitching of Mickey Lolich to win the series. Brock once again stole seven bases and was the leading hitter in the series, posting a .464 batting average with 6 runs and 5 runs batted in.
At the end of the 1960s, Brock's career was entering its prime. Beginning in 1969, he produced six consecutive seasons with 190 hits or better. He was named NL Player of the Month for the first of three times in his career in May 1971 with a .405 batting average and 8 stolen bases. In August 1973, he broke a record set by Ty Cobb when he stole his 50th base of the season, marking the ninth time he had stolen 50 or more bases in a season. Brock won his second NL Player of the Month Award in August 1974, with 29 stolen bases in 30 games, despite batting only .326; also, he was the first batter to be named Player of the Month without hitting a home run in the month of his award.
On September 10, 1974, Brock stole two bases, tying Maury Wills' mark of 104 with a first inning steal of second base and then capturing sole possession of the single season record with another swipe of second in the seventh inning. He ended the season with a new major league single-season record of 118 stolen bases. Brock finished second to Steve Garvey in the balloting for the 1974 National League Most Valuable Player Award.
In a game against the San Diego Padres on August 29, 1977 at Jack Murphy Stadium in San Diego, Brock became the all-time major league stolen base leader when he broke Ty Cobb's career record of 892 stolen bases. The record had been one of the most durable in baseball history and like Babe Ruth's record of 714 career home runs, had been considered unbreakable by some observers.
Brock remained best known for base-stealing and starting Cardinals rallies. He was said to have disdained Maury Wills' method of base-stealing, instead shortening his leads and going hard. He was also an early student of game films. He used an 8 mm movie camera from the dugout to film opposing pitchers and study their windups and pickoff moves to detect weaknesses he could exploit.
Brock fell into a hitting slump early in the 1978 season and lost the left fielder's job. However, he fought back during spring training in 1979 with a .345 batting average to regain his starting job. Brock was named Player of the Month for the month of May 1979, during which he produced a .433 batting average.
On August 13, 1979, Brock became the fourteenth player in Major League Baseball history to reach the 3,000 hits plateau against the team that traded him, the Chicago Cubs. Approximately one month later, Carl Yastrzemski reached the same plateau and was promptly invited to the White House by Massachusetts Congressman Tip O'Neill. Brock was reported to have felt slighted that he hadn't received a similar invitation. Brock originally stated that he wouldn't go to the White House even if he was invited. However, after consideration he decided that forgiveness was the best course and accepted a belated invitation to meet with the President. Brock retired at the end of the season, having posted a .304 batting average in his last season at the age of 40. At the end of the season, he was named the National League Comeback Player of the Year—the first player to be so named in his final Major League season.
Career statistics
In a nineteen-year major league career, Brock played in 2,616 games, accumulating 3,023 hits in 10,332 at bats for a .293 career batting average along with 149 home runs, 900 runs batted in, 1,610 runs scored, and a .343 on-base percentage. A six-time All-Star, Brock hit over .300 eight times during his career. He ended his career with a .959 career fielding percentage.
Brock held the single-season stolen base record with 118 until it was broken by Rickey Henderson in 1982. He also held the major league record for career stolen bases with 938 until it was also broken by Henderson in 1991. He led the National League in stolen bases for a record eight times and also had a record twelve consecutive seasons with 50 or more stolen bases. Brock is still the National League's leader in career stolen bases.
Brock's .391 World Series batting average is the highest for anyone who played over 20 series games. His 14 stolen bases in World Series play are also a series record. Brock's 13 hits in the 1968 World Series tied a single-series record previously made by Bobby Richardson in 1964 against his Cardinals' team, and later tied in 1986 by Marty Barrett.
In a unique (if incidental) accomplishment, Brock was the first player ever to bat in a major league regular season game in Canada. Leading off against Montreal Expo pitcher Larry Jaster (a Cardinal teammate of Brock's just the year before, who had been acquired by the Expos in that offseason's expansion draft) in the Cardinals' April 14, 1969 game at Jarry Park, he lined out to second baseman Gary Sutherland.
Awards, honors and life after baseball
Brock received numerous awards during his playing career. In January 1968 he was named the recipient of the Babe Ruth Award as the outstanding player in the 1967 World Series. Brock was honored with The Sporting News Player of the Year Award in 1974. In the wake of his record setting 118 stolen bases during the 1974 season, Brock was named the winner of the Roberto Clemente Award in March 1975, for best exemplifying the game of baseball both on and off the field. In 1977 he was awarded the Lou Gehrig Memorial Award as the player who best exemplified Lou Gehrig's ability and character. In 1978, the National League announced that its annual stolen base leader would receive the Lou Brock Award, making Brock the first active player to have an award named after him.
In October 1979, Brock was named the National League's Comeback Player of the Year. In December 1979, he was named as the recipient of the Hutch Award, given to the player who best exemplifies the fighting spirit and competitive desire of Fred Hutchinson. Also in 1979, the St. Louis Cardinals retired Brock's jersey number 20, an honor that had previously been bestowed upon only three other Cardinals players; Stan Musial, Dizzy Dean and Bob Gibson. In 1983 he was inducted into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame. In 2014, the Cardinals announced Brock among 22 former players and personnel to be inducted into the St. Louis Cardinals Hall of Fame Museum for the inaugural class of 2014.
Brock was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1985, his first year of eligibility. He was inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame in 1992. Brock was inducted into the St. Louis Walk of Fame in May 1994 and, in 1995 he was inducted into the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame. In 1999, he was ranked Number 58 on The Sporting News' list of the 100 Greatest Baseball Players, and was nominated as a finalist for the Major League Baseball All-Century Team.
After retiring from baseball, Brock prospered as a businessman, especially as a florist in the St. Louis, Missouri area. He briefly worked as a color analyst for Monday Night Baseball on ABC in 1980, and for Chicago White Sox telecasts the following year. Brock still regularly appears at Cardinals games. When he steps onto the field he is always greeted by a loud, low-pitched cheer of "Loooouuuuuuuuuuuu". He also lent his name to a unique rainhat, shaped like a miniature umbrella and to be worn at games during showers in lieu of retreating to the concourse. The product was called the "Brockabrella."
Brock and his wife are both ordained ministers serving at Abundant Life Fellowship Church in St. Louis, and he is a director on the board of YTB International. Brock's speed was referenced in the song Check the Rhime by the pioneering "jazz rap" hip-hop ensemble A Tribe Called Quest. On December 5, 2006 he was recognized for his accomplishments on and off of the field when he received the Bobby Bragan Youth Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award. Brock is the father of former University of Southern California Trojan and National Football League player Lou Brock Jr.
Brock's left leg was amputated below the knee in October 2015 because of an infection related to a diabetic condition.
He announced on April 13, 2017, that was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a blood cancer that starts in the bone marrow's plasma cells.

BOC arrests claimant of PHP4.5-M ‘party drugs’
#PHnews: BOC arrests claimant of PHP4.5-M ‘party drugs’
MANILA – Government authorities on Monday arrested the claimant of a package containing over 2,000 tablets of ecstasy or “party drugs” worth PHP4.8 million at the Central Post Office in Manila.
In a statement, the Bureau of Customs (BOC) Port of NAIA said a certain Ron Ron Salonga from Port Area, Manila claimed the parcel at around noon and was immediately apprehended.
Records show that the shipment declared as “2 Women Clothes, 1 Kids Clothes & 1 Shoes” was sent by a certain “Mary Lumbao Edward” from the Netherlands and was consigned to a certain resident of Malate, Manila.
Upon further profiling and examination of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Customs examiner and K-9 sweeping, it was discovered that 12 packs of ecstasy tablets with green and gold colors were concealed inside the walls of the box/packaging worth PHP4,892,600.
Chemical lab analysis from Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) showed that they were indeed ecstasy tablets.
The claimant and the illegal drugs are now in the custody of PDEA and the suspect is now facing criminal charges for violation of the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 in relation to Sections 118 (Prohibited Importation), 1113 (Goods Liable for Seizure and Forfeiture) and 1401 (Unlawful Importation) of the Republic Act 10863, otherwise known as the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act.
The BOC conducted the operation in coordination with the PDEA and NAIA Inter-Agency Drug Interdiction Task Group (NAIA-IADITG).
Last week, joint operatives of the BOC Port of NAIA, PDEA and NAIA-IADITG seized 535 pieces of ecstasy tablets with street value of PHP1 million in an air parcel at Central Mail Exchange Center. (PNA)

FGCU sports look to future after celebrating 20th anniversary
When contemplating the historic leaps his group has made prior to now 10 years, ladies’s basketball coach Karl Smesko thinks something is feasible for the Florida Gulf Coast College athletic division within the subsequent 10 years.
At its 20-year anniversary, FGCU athletics is celebrating its previous this faculty yr. However what might the longer term appear to be after the Eagles skyrocketed to success in such a short while?
FGCU held its first sporting occasion 20 years in the past this fall. Since then the varsity has gone from NAIA to NCAA Division I, gained dozens of convention championships, and each group sport has certified for the NCAA match a number of instances and gained at the least one match sport.
Smesko is one in all FGCU’s 4 founding coaches – those that began their applications and are the one coaches these groups have ever had. Smesko’s ladies’s basketball group has a 493-95 report (.838 successful share) with 10 convention titles, seven NCAA match appearances and two wins.
All from a group that had by no means performed a sport 18 years in the past.
Tumblr media
“In case you would have requested me at the start what the following 10 years would appear to be, I might have been utterly incorrect,” stated Smesko, whose group’s first season was 2002-03. “In case you requested me 10 years in the past what the following 10 years could be like, I might have been utterly incorrect once more.
“I feel I might have underestimated what we’ve been capable of accomplish as an athletic division. When speaking concerning the subsequent 10 years, I don’t need to underestimate what’s doable.”
Bettering with age
FGCU began as an NAIA faculty and shortly transitioned into NCAA Division II. The Eagles jumped to Division I in 2007-08 and joined the ASUN Convention. Since then FGCU groups have gained a complete of 82 convention titles (common season and match mixed).
It’s one factor to dominate their mid-major convention. It’s one other for the Eagles to develop into nationally aggressive yr in and yr out, which is the objective for the following 10 years.
To do this takes cash – cash to enhance amenities, supply extra scholarships and journey to big-name opponents. Within the subsequent decade, FGCU hopes the passage of time alone is sufficient to enhance its athletic finances.
Tumblr media
FGCU held its first courses in 1997. When the Eagles moved to Division I the varsity was simply 10 years previous, giving it a small and younger base of alumni. School sports activities applications rely closely on assist and donations from their graduates. For many of FGCU’s lifetime, its alumni had been early of their careers and possibly not capable of give cash just like the grads of different extra established colleges.
FGCU athletic director Ken Kavanagh stated the varsity’s oldest conventional alumni are 44 years previous, and the common graduate is 32.
“We’re all trying ahead to an alumni base that’s 10 years older,” Kavanagh stated. “In case you put collectively rising assist from our alumni and the good assist we’ve already acquired, I actually consider the extra issues we are able to accomplish will be wonderful.”
Tumblr media
Funding the longer term
Kavanagh stated the primary use of an even bigger pot of cash could be to ensure each sport at FGCU has the NCAA most quantity of scholarships out there. Proper now solely males’s and ladies’s basketball are on the max.
FGCU additionally wish to be sure each group has the NCAA most quantity of coaches on employees, too, which isn’t the case now.
The Eagles would want between 10 and 12 scholarships to completely fund the opposite sports activities, Kavanagh stated. And that doesn’t embody price of attendance cash that the NCAA additionally permits along with tuition, room and board, and books. FGCU is allowed to supply $3,500 a yr further per athlete, however proper now the varsity solely has sufficient cash to provide basketball gamers price of attendance cash.
Tumblr media
Smesko and softball coach David Deiros, one other one in all FGCU’s founding coaches, stated extra cash is required to proceed to enhance amenities – exercise gyms, locker rooms, stadiums, and educational facilities.
Additional donations might fund recruiting journeys and journey for video games at marquee opponents, which enhance consciousness of FGCU groups on the nationwide degree.
All the advantages that cash can convey – extra scholarships, higher amenities, farther journey – are aimed toward bringing elite athletes to FGCU, which retains the Eagles successful convention titles.
“That’s the lifeblood of the whole lot we’re doing,” Deiros stated. “The explanation we construct up amenities, the rationale you supply academic assist, is so we are able to herald one of the best student-athletes doable. That’s who wins video games for you. It’s not about me. I’ve by no means thrown a strike or hit a ball for FGCU.”
Strengthening the schedule
For its groups to be thought of among the many greatest within the nation, FGCU wants sturdy competitors. An elevated power of schedule results in nationwide rankings and higher possibilities at at-large bids to the NCAA match, that are uncommon within the ASUN.
Though the Eagles have dominated the convention and have proven they’ll compete towards greater groups, they gained’t be leaving the ASUN any time quickly.
Tumblr media
Kavanagh stated the ASUN is one of the best match for a non-football faculty of FGCU’s dimension and site. Eight of the 9 convention colleges are positioned within the southeastern United States, whereas 4 are in Florida. Shifting to a different convention would imply a lot farther highway journeys for FGCU.
Even whereas enjoying in one of many smaller conferences in Division I, the Eagles have had success nationally. Every group sport – males’s and ladies’s basketball, baseball, males’s and ladies’s soccer, softball and volleyball – has gained an NCAA match sport, and all of the wins have come towards a lot bigger colleges.
“One of many issues I’m pleased with since I’ve been right here is that after we’ve made the NCAA match, these groups weren’t simply excited to be there,” Kavanagh stated. “We’ve confirmed we are able to compete.”
Tumblr media
Because the Eagles enhance the following 10 years, they need to see the remainder of the ASUN enhance with them. If the league can enhance its nationwide rating, extra groups will get into the NCAA match.
“The ASUN has acquired to develop into a two-bid (to the NCAA match) league to ensure that us to make an impression nationally,” Deiros stated. “We’ve acquired to play a extremely good, high-profile schedule the place we’re enjoying prime non-conference groups and beating them. Then you may get into the nationwide match as an at-large. When you begin doing that on a constant degree, you’ve acquired the pedigree the place you proceed to get at-large bids.”
