week of 02/22/2021
I had meant to write something yesterday and then the day before but instead I drew for a couple hours instead. now we’ve already left and I’m finally getting around to noting down the week’s activities..
on 02/23 (tuesday), jean and I hopped on a train to myoko kogen (in niigata). we rented a small snowy chalet that’s a ways off from any other civilization. its the most cozy place I’ve ever been, and been delightful in every way.
we arrived, settled in, and went for a walk in the neighborhood. I am inexplicably delighted by icicles. nanaco (and her partner lief) are super cool and their place is a VIBE.
02/24 - cathy joined us! we went for a walk and made a snowman. had soondubu for lunch (before she arrived) along with a light cucumber salad. we had more curry for dinner, and made 4 cups of rice that she brought. food supplies were replenished... relaxing evening with some wine, we all fell asleep quickly and quietly.
02/25 - thursday
we went skiing!! this was a very spontaneous but very excellent and wonderful turn of events. could not have expected the morning to go the way that it did. originally, we had planned to go snow shoeing and we walked to the visitor center... only to see that it was closed. they seemed to be doing construction (in the dead of winter...?!) and we asked a nearby worker if it at least snow shoe rentals still available. he said no. on the walk over to the visitor center though, there’s this whole spectacular view of a the ski slopes. unbelievably stunning, and the sky was clear blue and absolutely perfect conditions (a fresh layer of powder!)
we decided we’d go skiing instead. got rentals at a little shop just below the lodge area, and then bought lift tickets for the morning. everything all together cost less than $50. it’s so inexpensive! granted, it was a pretty small ski spot. but I guess I have the frame of reference in the US... where skiing is an obnoxiously expensive activity.
jean and I were able to get 6 runs in, tried a couple of different routes. the lift up alone takes 15 min. and our first two runs were pretty shaky... still had to warm up and get our form back. but god, towards the end, it was FANTASTIC— there’s this one point on the route where it levels out slightly before a bigger drop so you can’t see what’s next. only the horizon of mountains in the distance is visible. it feels like you’re about to ski off into the sky...
we originally wanted to go to this soba/tempura place for lunch, but weren’t able to because it was closed (this is a recurring problem...). instead, we got katsu curry at the ski lodge and then some kebab takeout for our dinner later that night. picked up coffee at this hippy little shop on the walk back. lots of cocoa!! makes me want to buy cocoa so I can make more at home. we cooked fried rice (using eggs, frozen broccoli, and the kebab bowl we brought back), and ended the night with beers by the fire.
it’s friday now! we all woke up kind of early today. it may have been those couple beers last night that contributed to less harmonious sleep than usual.
for breakfast, jean made an amazing egg tomato scramble that we had on top of toast. plus the rest of the banana bread that she brought along. she also scooped up a mug of fresh snow, and we drizzled some gum syrup on it (diy snow cones...???) — not bad.
we’re going to head to shirakawa today, it’ll be a bit of a journey but I’m looking forward to it.
