Anything Fable in Zable's vessel body does to the kids diorama happens in the real world like adding a plastic dragon or a unicorn will make them appear in the real world to fight the enemy.

Or add toy fire will create fire in the real world to burn down the place.

Or accidently spill water or soda in the kid diorama to create a flood inside the place with water or acid but will take out the Zable vessel body piece to teleport out of the place but not after lighting the enemy's piece on fire to burn the place or area with the enemy.

If the enemy destroys the diorama Fable in Zable's vessel body was holding then both parties will be in a white void but Fable can teleport out but the enemy can't.

If the enemy destroys the diorama and they were a living building or a place then they die right there.

If the enemy burns or rips Zable's piece then Fable in Zable's body will mimic those effects then will pretend to die but will wait for the enemy to leave the area or look away.

Fable in Zable's vessel body will the area leave in a weird way like making another kids diorama of the outside off screen then jump in it to leave.

This will make everything normal again to the enemy but will one small change to the enemy will be their design will be something you have to double take like the enemy having a small rip in their skin like a paper cut or feel paper doll like for a quick second then feel normal.

Fable in Zable's vessel will hold the vehicle slap stick shifter part and will be wearing a comedy outfit.

Then Fable in Zable's vessel body will do comedic slap stick attacks on the enemy like smack them with the slap stick vehicle part, poking the eyes of the enemy, putting a pie in the enemy's face, basically any slap stick humor move.

While the enemy is distracted then Fable in Zable's vessel body will put the slap stick shifter vehicle part on the back of the enemy to control them with another slap stick vehicle part to make the enemy do more dangerous things that harms the enemy in a comedic way.

If the room isn't living then Fable will just turn the clones into instruments and does the cloned fusion of Zable with the enemy to fight dance with.

Fable in Zable's vessel body will play catchy music on the many instruments that Fable summoned to make the enemy slowly dance to the beat then later dance fight the fusion clone like a boss battle and if the person can't hear then the vibrations will be enough to work.

Only dancing seems to be the only thing that can damage both parties and normal attacks with trying to eat the clone will effect the enemy is a similar way due to the clone being a fusion of both parties.

Whoever wins this dance battle will change how the outcome ending will be once the song is completed like if the enemy wins then Fable and Zable will both be awake with both parties in danger since the enemy gets free hits in.

If Fable wins then this genderless shifter will make the place normal not killing the enemy but will escape by jumping in the piano then make it alive to have it hop around close to a wall to break out of the house or building from the wall or roof to leave in a weird way.

The fusion clone would disappear into a mist that the enemy might inhale then cough and later will randomly hear the very song the enemy just dance fought against that might trigger a fight or flight reaction.

If the enemy gets close to Zable then the music will get louder.

If the enemy doesn't want to play games then Fable in Zable's vessel body would be randomly playing a drawing videogame to draw the outside using Zable's memories before meeting the enemy that scared, stressed, and frightened Zable that made Fable wake up to fight back using a random dream move.

Once Fable is finished drawing will jump into the screen of the drawing video game to teleport away from a enemy to safety but might leave the portable game console behind for the enemy to curiously pick up the console to have the enemy first not be interested in the game at first but later will be addicted to the game that the enemy is absorbed in playing the game that the enemy won't eat or drink but will only play this game ignoring their basic needs like sleep but only using their energy to beat this game.

Only Fable knows the secret code to beat the game since if the enemy is on the last level with the mystery code blocking the ending of the game and the enemy guessing the code is impossible to crack.

Fable will try to add extra parts to the enemy or remove parts until this entity gets bored then just undo what they did and wakes up the enemy by putting a lollipop with their favorite flavor in their mouth to send them on their way not knowing what happened to them.

RULESET: Super Sneak

Description: All melee units gain the Sneak ability.

Reasons Why I like it

It allows you to play melee cards that you would otherwise not be able to attack from the back line with. It increases their functionality and allows for some unique and deadly combinations. Since it's likely but not given that most teams will feature and focus on melee, it is typical to also incorporate thorns and demoralize or inspire into your lineups. This will help increase / decrease the attack effectiveness while at the same time delivering some payback for each one of those melee attacks.

For hire mana matches, those monsters that have double attack or a duel of tax with a range and a melee really become useful as they can deliver the maximum damage for round.

Ruleset: Super Sneak: All Melee monsters gain the sneak ability.

SPLINTERS: Fire, Water, Earth, Death

Initial Rule Set and Mana Gameplay Thoughts

Rulesets The rule sets are fairly straightforward in my mind. Losing the dragon splinter is a slight loss is you can no longer play Djinn Chwala. There are some other powerful options, you can play death and thorns, life with Mylor, Plus thorns, or you can go water with speed armor and inspire, or fire with the additional melee and possibly piercing or bloodlust.

Mana A solid Middle ground of available mana. 31 is plenty to get a relatively strong team out on the field while at the same time limiting those high amount of monsters and not allowing an absolute slug fest of legendary 10 plus man of monsters

Splinters I think each splinter here has a valid approach. I think you can make a compelling team with all four of them although death would probably be my least favorite. I think using water, fire, and Earth are all equally productive, depending on what type of match and style you want to play or counter.

Summoner ETERNAL BRUNE I am starting to love etern as it allows me access to Gladius cards as well as removing to armor. While not giving a really boost, we're moving armor is sometimes better

First Position GRUM FLAMEBLADE I decided to play a bloodlust heavy lineup. Hoping to secure some knockouts and really build up my stats as well as repair my armor each time.

Second Position FINA VOXOM

In for penny, in for a pound. It's always a tough choice which one of the Gladius cards to pick, but I wanted the speed and blood loss versus armor and bloodbust with no speed.

Third Position DISINTEGRATOR

If they're going to play melee, I want to be less effective against me and to take a melee damage away

Fourth Position SCORCH FIEND At this point I effectively ran out and wanted to put as many cards between me and my three useful cards as possible

Fifth Position RADIATED SCORCHER Another bad card, although I wanted to give it a small chance to be able to attack given that it does have shatter and it might come in useful

Sixth Position CHAOS AGENT Hoping to get lucky with Dodge on the rear as their monsters hopefully Target it

Opponent Lineup & Match Play

Summoner MYLOR the no-brainer play. This allows each one of their monsters to have thorns and do tremendous damage

FUNGUS FLINGER Not bad putting it first, it has Thorn damage now and is going to provide a martyr boost to unicorn mustang

UNICORN MUSTANG Not a bad choice, it's speed even before boosted is high. It also has void to help negate a heavy magic lineup.

QUEEN MYCELIA Typically a great play, the addition of armor to a mylar team can really be devastating. Luckily for me my summoner will eliminate the addition and take us back to neutral

GOBLIN PSYCHIC Healing a boosted unicorn mustang is a smart idea and a solid play

GOBLIN THEIF Not sure if I would have picked goblin thief to play here as every melee monster would already have sneak. It's lower health versus other options means it's going to get eliminated quicker

VENARI MARKSCRAT Another Marta card will do nothing but boost my opponent will also delivering Thorn damage to me

Round 1

This is going to be a fast and bloody round one. Unlike other matches that don't really have much change this one will see significant turnover. As the round starts I am quickly the first to get the first knocks out as Fina Markscrat and while it takes two Thorn damage it also triggers a blood loss to add one health back as well as adding one to both its melee and speed as the round continues to play out, I lose Chaos agent, radiated scorcher, and scorch fiend. This brings me down to only three monsters. At the end of the round grum flame blade does secure a knockout of fungus finger. While this delivers to Thorn damage, Chrome then triggers bloodlust and adds once that back to all areas as well as martyr triggering a stat boost to unicorn mustang.

Round 2

The start of round 2 looks much different than that of round one. The board's much more empty, but a couple of my monsters have been boosted. The good news for me is the start of round 2 Fina once again goes first and secures and knocks out of goblin thief. While it delivers to more Thorn damage, blood loss halves that and adds more stats. Luckily for me grum manages a hit on a faster unicorn mustang, and everything else plays out as expected. My health is getting low on multiple monsters but I'm making great progress.

Round 3

My speed is really being a difference here, as once again Fina scores it's third knockout and while taking two more Thorn damage it adds one back to health plus one to melee and speed. It's now seven speed with a 6 melee damage. It's around plays out the thorn damage delivered to grum becomes too much as it is knocked out by Queen mycelia.

Round 4

The start of round four doesn't look great but at the same time I guess it does. My speed and damage is enough to knock out unicorn mustang. Triggering yet another bloodlust adding back one health and some attack and speed. I am then able to secure the final victory blow by disintegrator knocking out Queen Mycelia.

Thoughts -

Without bloodlust I'm not sure I would be able to have won this match. I was also able to get a couple of hits where I was a 20 or 30% chance to miss, and that could be the game. The infected lure can eat just like a normal person would be the "food" would travel through the lure cord to their trash like houses to eat.

Lux Abode's Reality Show and Sitcom

Lux Abode wants to make a trashy reality show and it's called The Real Houses of The Uncanny Valley.

She would gather up one of each species and pay them to be in this reality show.

She will randomly put challenges in it to spice it up.

This show slowly gained a cult following but she only does these on weekdays but the dream gameshows on the weekends unless she is buyer hunting successfully.

Lux Abode puts it on a pirate station on the uncanny valley tv channels on a weird time so she won't get caught only the infected realtors know which channel it's on.

But you can randomly catch it if you are channel surfing.

Lux Abode will also have a segment where you can just adopt a fungmammal and Regular Guys in fuzzball form as pets in a show segment similar to Cats 101.

She well also tell the history of them but only a few people check it out.

This is like a pirate lost public access show.

The personality of each fungmammal and regular guy fuzzball is known before hand unless the fungmammal is defective or blank.

Lux Abode will randomly choose people or beings off the street for her podcast which is radio only.

Both parties talk about random things happening and most of the time get off topic.

Some podcasts range from listenable to unlistenable in quality.

If bored she will make up a game.

Lux Abode has another show that is a sitcom called Honey I'm Home.

It's about a Realtor that fell in love with a human but still wants to eat the buyer and adopted a regular guy as a teen but due to budget cuts that same regular guy plays as the dog and the cat in the sitcom.

There is a plot line where the Regular Guy messes up their role and they are half teen with the animal ears but the show just left it in.

This character later became a mascot that lasted 6 seasons and a movie with merch that is super rare.

The sitcom theme is a earworm.

There is a plot line where the buyer wants to know what a Realtor tastes like and plots how to capture one but that's in the non canon Halloween special.

If you seen any sitcom plot line then it's basically like that but with a weird twist and also have clever product placement in the show like in the background or character's randomly causally putting the product name in their sentences.

The Regular Guy that is playing as a teen is a adult but is acting as a teen but needed to be taught by the human actress or actor on what a teenager is since Regular Guys were never babies that grow up but start out as adults once they remove themself from the motherball.

The sitcom is set inside of the house body of the Realtor and this Realtor is well feed with actors or actress maybe part of the staff that arrives late or gets the wrong food orders.

But most of the time normal foods work to satisfy this house.

But one accident ruined this Realtor's whole career.

While the staff was done recording the movie and after seeing the premiere decided to want to snatch a buyer because they haven't had human in awhile so this Realtor waited then later found the one.

Chateau Bungalow was this Realtors name and was clean cut and a cult classic celebrity.

But this buyer was smart and before being eaten was a smoker then dropped the cigarette on the floor which caused a fire and badly burned the house body while also damaging the lure.

The buyer did flee the badly damaged house but Chateau both the lure and the house nearly died there but some how survived but seem to have lost his memories with his lines.

Lux Abode easily replaced him with Jetty Shanty since Chateau Bungalow never showed up while his lure wasn't good enough for tv let alone a obscure channel tv show.

Chateau Bungalow tried to do the buyer hunting to survive but his lurebody moved differently along with his voice and the brain fog from the failed snatcher buyer attempt that he was losing his memories of his past life.

He was hurting and starving near death until a creature appeared checking the burned place out to see if the burned debris was edible.

Chateau was scared of the this creature but the fungmammal was nice to this realtor and tried to heal him but it didn't last long.

Sprocket was the name this fungmammal had and looked like a firecracker mixed with a cat.

She protects Chateau and sometimes finds old bootleg vhs tapes of the sitcom so Chateau can get some of his memories back but sometimes wonder where the other actors and actress are doing now.

Chateau did go to see if Hazzy which was the Regular guy in the sitcom was still at the old set but was abandoned since the reboot wasn't as good as the original.

Hazzy was homeless and was stealing food to survive then later rented her Doe ball form as a pet then later took odd jobs that didn't pay well so decided to live close to the motherball thinking of giving up to be reabsorbed.

Sprocket sensed Hazzy and telepathy told Chateau to talk to her then both got captured by the very company they made ads for in the sitcom all those years ago.

But both are now puppets for the company but are both paid decently and can now tell what their job is without lying about their job since it's on a secret channel that only a select few of people stumble on & infected realtors can watch but are not allowed to share the channel.

Splinterlands BATTLE MAGE SECRETS Featuring Lost Legendaries

Featuring Bronze League Summoner and Monsters in Action!

I'm back this week featuring The battle-made secret post with the focus on the Lost legendary rule set. The more things changed in this game, the more things stay the same. I'll be highlighting a post using my bronze deck that I battled out in I believe low silver, or bronze one at the time. Either way since the updates it's been much more difficult to win, but those winds have led to greater reports. Let's review my strategy in this match and see how things turned out and how it might help you in the future.

CHALLENGE RULES

RULESET: LOST LEGENDARIES

Description: Legendary units may not be used.

Legendary summoners are still available.

Reasons Why I like it

I like this rule set as it helps to equalize playing field sometimes. There are times when you simply don't have their resources to buy all the top cards which are usually legendaries, or that the RNG gods have not smiled upon you and reward cards and you just haven't earned them yet since you can't even buy them. This sometimes helps to bring it down to just a common, rare, and epic battle which is typically easier to complete. It also forces you to stop relying heavily on those key legendary as I tend to do sometimes and gets me out of a rut

Initial Rule Set and Mana Gameplay Thoughts

Rulesets I don't think he lost legendary rules that favors any of these splinters more than another so I don't think this rule set will have any impact on splinter choice. Given the limited manner of only 28 I don't think it'll have much.

Healed out I'd have a bigger impact, losing the ability to heal really limits some of the more popular strategies of stacking a powerful monster with the healer behind to try to run through your opponent with only a couple of cards.

Mana 28 mana is fairly limited and will restrict the teams that are available to play. It will be more challenging but most of the five splinters available have enough low to mid credit cards that it won't have any favors.

Splinters I think losing death is not a major impact other than we lose the ability to take away one magic damage. I think 28 mana is a bit more challenging to playing death and other splinters so I don't know if the splinters really have a huge impact here either I think plenty of teams can be made from the remaining splinters.

Summoner MYLOR CROWLING I decide to put the limited mana to add the additional damage of thorns for any melee monsters. While sometimes it's a mess if playing against a magic heavy team, I think it's potentially a huge boost if the team has a couple of mainly cards. Heading thorns to every card no matter if it's position is a big benefit in my mind.

First Position UNICORN MUSTANG Unicorn mustang is a tried and true go to for a lot of players at this level. Having high-speed damage and health is a great combination when you add in a base ability of void to neutralize some of the magic attacks and the additional boost of thorns it can become real powerhouse

Second Position BRAMBLE PIXIE One of my favorite newer cards, it's three damage with my health and reachability main tickets to really help Hammer home on the enemy's tank and deliver some damage

Third Position VENARI SPELLSMITH I've been using this card more and more for the spell. I'm tired of seeing cards rack up huge tax through bloodluster last stand and I enjoy getting these cards cut down.

Fourth Position HALFLING ALCHEMIST I figure if I'm going to use to spell I might as well use havling to cut down my enemy's attacks even more. I like the idea of neutering most of their big attacks won't mind stay the same

Fifth Position URAEUS . It's simplistic sneak attack with two damage is a pretty solid option and it comes with a base level one armor Tuesday his first hit.

Sixth Position MYCELIC MOPHOID Hello everyone made a monster, I want to come to base thorns and gold points I was boost. True that I get a thorns based on the summoner but I went this direction anyways.

Opponent Lineup & Match Play

Summoner OBSIDIAN Not surprised to see my enemy Target magic. It feels like most games are very heavy with yodan, kron, llama, and magic in the lower silver and bronze legs with very few counters.

HILL GIANT Also would have been my choice if I was playing this type of lineup. For only 3 minutes to get an amazing seven health

MAGI OF CHAOS Nice and powerful after it's boost up to three magic. It becomes a pretty heavy hitter for not too many mana

GOBLIN PSYCHIC Not sure exactly about this choice since the healed out real said neuters its biggest attribute in my opinion. Sure it'll still do three magic after the boost but it's pretty slow and limited and health

MYCELIC SLIPSPAWN Solid choice since as the taunt ability to attract all of the enemies attacks. While not perfect and better when combined with the triage card it's still a selling choice.

Round 1

Just around starts I think I'm sitting pretty good given they went pretty much heavy and I have unicorn mustang with base void. The only concern is that most of my attacks will be going against the back row and I won't be doing that much damage. My Thornton will only be doing damage against Hill giant.

It's the wrong place out I think speed has a lot to do with my luck. I do most of my attacks first before then and before long he'll giant is down to one health, and I got very lucky with handling hitting millspond and taking its magic attack down to one around finishes off with Hill giant killing itself on a melee attack and getting thorned to death.

Round 2

Around two starts and while I'm very low on health, things are looking pretty good for me I think. It's going to be a loss of my tank but my second card has relatively decent health and I still have a lot of cards attacking. As the round progresses I lose unicorn mustang but I quickly knock out magi of chaos and bring them down to only two monsters.

Round 3

Things are looking great for me, they are still doing some good magic damage but I have reduced them down to only two attacking monsters that are going to be guaranteed hits for me as they are the same or less speed than my cards. Around 3 starts off and I knock off slip spawn can deliver some vicious damage to goblin psychic

Round 4

Around four isn't really even around. They're only card has limited health, still in one magic damage, it is a slow speed. I have three cards we can attack and hit first and secure my picture.

Thoughts - and Chances to Win Again

Things look pretty locked in stone for me as in a 100% chance to win again. I think the pure combination of having a void monster, dealing heavy damage while giving him the storm damage and reducing their attackers by handling huge impact. He's monsters to buy together to make a great team and I'm certainly enjoying my rentals of both mylar and halfling

“All officers, please report to the bridge. All officers to the bridge,” Sighing I slid my tablet into the pouch on my belt and began to make my way down the hall. So much for a peaceful morning. Something was bound to happen, I wasn’t lucky enough to get a morning to myself. No one in the Resistance was.

The bridge was a flurry of activity when I arrived. But nothing seemed to be out of the ordinary. Generals and admirals, were conversing over cups of caf. “Hey Captain!” An admiral waded through the crowd and held out a cup. “Caf?”

“Thanks” I replied, graciously taking the cup and reveling in the warmth. The corridors were way too drafty during the rainy season. “Do you know what’s going on?” I asked before taking a sip. He shrugged.

“No clue.”

General Organa entered along with another much older officer, General Madine. The two were deep in conversation as they moved towards the holo-table in the center of the room. Everyone seemed to take notice and started to quiet down. The generals looked up and Leia cleared her throat.

“We have some news regarding the First Order. We received some intel that the First Order has gained control of a few smaller systems in the outer rim. Normally this wouldn’t really be anything to really worry about. We certainly cannot stop the First Order from doing everything. However; these systems have been flagged for the resources they hold.” She turned to Madine as some of the officers began to whisper amongst themselves.

“Precisely” Madine’s voice cut in. “These systems hold resources and sites that could indeed foster the implementation and construction of a new super weapon. A new Starkiller base, if you will…”

“That’s all well and good, but how do we know for sure?” a pilot asked.

“Good question” Madine countered looking straight at him. “Well uh…what was your name son?”

“Mylor Bretton. Commander of the blue squadron.”

“Well Commander, we know because the source of our information died getting it to us. It was the very last thing they ever did. They died for the Republic. Don’t you think that the least you could do, would be to trust that both they and we know how to handle this? So when General Organa and I tell you that the First Order is building a Starkiller Base II, you better believe it.”

“Yessir.”

No one else said a damn thing while he and General Organa finished the briefing. Squadrons were sent out to scout the outer rim territories with the black squadron leading the charge. Others were given separate missions on the ground. Doing some footwork, putting feelers out and attempting to tap into an networks out there. And I was one of them.

“Generals, I respect your decision but I just got back from another mission and I really don’t think that I’ll be up for it.”

“Captain please” Leia started. “You’re one of the best we’ve got, General Antilles thought you’d be perfect. Yours was the first name he put forward.”

“Of course he did.” I sighed.

“And, add to the fact that we don’t have a whole lot of men power at the moment.” Madine added on. “It’s a simple-”

“Yeah you say that now, but what happens if I get captured, found out?? What then?”

“You’ve been in situations far riskier than this…we still have contacts out there that may have vital information.” She certainly knew how to plead her case. Who was I kidding? She was a senator for crying out loud!

“Fine. How long will I be out there?”

“Just until you get some scrap of information for us.”

That night after making my rounds, I practically collapsed on my bed. A whole day going nonstop. On top of the new mission, high level reconnaissance work. Just another day at work. I sighed and looked up as a door down the hall opened.

“Thanks alot for recommending me…dad.”

“You’re welcome, you know I don’t do or say anything I don’t believe in” a wry, voice answered back.

“I know but couldn’t you have told her that I was still recovering? Or something?”

“You and I know that you already recovered and besides you are the best we’ve got.”

“Or maybe you’re just playing favorites…”

“That too” he smiled back.

5 Outdoor Walks To Do In Adelaide

1. Aldgate Valley Nature Walk

You can start the hike at the carpark within the conservation park. Eventually, you’ll circle back around to finish at the same location.

The Adelaide Botanic Garden is one of the city’s most prized possessions — it’s been a hotspot with residents for over 150 years. Visitors can explore over 50 hectares of unique plants, wildlife, and well-designed gardens. While there’s no set walking course, you can follow the various paths for hours before you see the whole garden.

5. Adelaide to Henley Beach

If you’re looking for an enjoyable city-to-beach walk, starting in the Adelaide CBD and heading to Henley Beach is one of the country’s best options. “Down the wooded lanes, around the twisting of the Helford Creek. Between the bank smothered in primroses, up again along a steep hill with the sun slanting through the blackthorns, passed a great old walled farm with high closed gateway, and a white cat basking in the sunset at a barn door high up in the wall. Then a fine view of brilliant sea, and back into Falmouth past the Swan Pool.” – Beatrix Potter, March 1892.

The famous children’s writer Beatrix Potter first visited Cornwall for an Easter holiday with her family in March 1892. Miss. Potter recorded all her observations from their visit – the places, people and wildlife – in her coded journal. This diary, which Beatrix kept between the ages of 15 and 30, was written in a code of her own invention. And that code was finally cracked by Leslie Linder in the 1960s. The following extracts about the Potter’s time in Cornwall are taken from Linder’s transcription.

At the time of Beatrix Potter’s first holiday in Cornwall she was just 26 years old and still unknown. It was a sunny spring day when the family arrived by train onto the platform of Falmouth station. In fact, the weather that year had been unseasonably warm and dry and the Potters had sunshine every day of their twelve day visit.

Beatrix’s writing show that she was quickly captivated by the hustle and bustle of the busy town of Falmouth and the beauty of the surrounding countryside.

“The spring growth is far more advanced here, green leaves burst on Hawthorn and some Sycamores, where in London are bare sticks . . . we never before had such a glory for weather, cloudless days, burning sun and the air so pure that it transmits every smell within twenty yards, from wall-flowers to fish and manure.”

During their holiday the Potter family took a horse and cart with a local driver to many of Cornwall’s most popular tourist spots. They spent days out on the Lizard and at Land’s End, visited the numerous formal gardens in the area, as well as hunting for cowrie shells on Castle Beach. The long drive to the Lizard “took place as usual in cloudless sunshine” and Potter comments that the dust coating the hedges made them look as if they were “powdered with snow”.

The family also admired the nearby churches at Mabe, Constantine, St Gluvias and Mylor. They hired boats to take them across to St Mawes (for a rather boisterous sounding market day), up the Carrick Roads and for sightseeing trips around the harbour. Beatrix mentions that it is her first time in a boat on the sea and seems quite proud that she enjoyed it so much without being seasick!

“The harbour is certainly a great attraction at Falmouth, each voyage more beautiful than the last . . . one pleasing feature of the landscape is the number and tameness of the birds, a heron, numerous gulls, cormorants, sea ducks and guillemots and one flock of wild geese . . . the cormorants fish inside the harbour alongside the boats, where there was also a porpoise one day.”

Potter even compares the Carrick Roads to her beloved Lake District, saying that the river was as smooth as Lake Windermere but more beautiful!

The tone of the journal gives the impression that Beatrix is very fond of the Cornish, although she seems to find them naïve, a little unsophisticated . . . oh and their language “most unintelligible”. But for me it is her vivid impressions of Falmouth more than a hundred years ago that are often the most entertaining and amusing to read. She paints us a fascinating picture of a vibrant, multicultural port, full of character and everyday hilarity. She writes:

“[It] is cosmopolitan, one sees five languages on the window of the barber’s shop. Everything has a nautical flavour, the baker sells sea bread, the grocer calls himself a ship’s chandler, the ironmonger’s window is full of binnacles, pulleys and lanterns, sail cloth is the leading article in the drapers and in one shop they announce fresh water on sale. Also, every mortal shop sells Valencia oranges, such bad ones too.”

Potter comments that she is often stared at in the street in a way that the foreign sailors are not, but she says that as a rule she finds the people polite and friendly. Her wonderful descriptions of the town’s intriguing inhabitants are delightful and certainly bring the streets that we know today to life.

“This is a quiet, well-conducted town, which is remarkable owing to the number of British and foreign seamen loitering about . . . They loll about the main street spitting on the pavement, their only objectionable habit; shake hands with one another in an elaborate manner . . . some of them are very picturesque. I saw one leaning against a post on the quay for hours in a scarlet woollen cap, bright blue jersey and great sea-boots, others with sashes round their middles, and one old Frenchmen in sabots [wooden clogs].”

She also paid a visit to the famous Burton’s Old Curiosity Shop. Beatrix was a keen amateur archaeologist and concluded that the shop was in ‘the great part absolute rubbish’. She describes Mr Burton as “a stout grey old gentleman in spectacles reading a paper” who took little interest in her. Potter did make a purchase however. She bought herself “a white pot-head of bone which was one of the few English curios of any antiquity, excepting a man-trap and sundry small cannon-balls”.

Her account of the town’s policemen is particularly enjoyable. Potter tells us that Falmouth has just three and that they can be seen either at the barbers or in “a hutch” at the back of Custom House. Their tiny building apparently had a huge flag pole and a very small garden. The officers themselves she describes thus:

“They are the most odd specimens, just ordinary natives dressed up in blue clothes and all seem to have bunions, or very mis-fitting boots. They are on friendly conversational terms with the other sailors and I have seen one of them having eggs at a Butchers.”

It was during her stay at The Falmouth Hotel that Potter sent her earliest known illustrated letter to four year old Noel Moore. The letter contains delightful pen and ink images of ships in the harbour, a steam train, and cats, dogs, chickens and two tame seagulls that she had seen in the hotel gardens.

It’s said that after her holiday in Cornwall Beatrix began work on The Tale of Little Pig Robinson. Her first book wasn’t published until 1901. She returned to Falmouth to see more of Cornwall the following year and then again 1894.
