In the article I have linked, author Hazel Boydell discusses the different kind of milks and mylks (vegan milk substitutes) and what are the best options for a person depending on their dairy or non-dairy preference. She discusses why certain options are better than others and what makes the milks different from milk besides that they are plant based options. She even pulls quotes from some of the best roasters in the world. 

it is 2020 and we have at least seven different kind of milk options when it comes to what kind of milk we want in our lattes. About a decade ago, if I wanted a milk option that did not come from a cow I was told I was high maintenance and would often have my friends roll their eyes ate me. There was even a time where requesting a latte to be skinny or made with 2% milk would get an eye roll reaction. Yeah, lactose intolerance is one of the more inconvenient dietary issues that one may face but it is still a health concern. Now comes the decision of what is the best milk. Very few people want plain whole milk anymore. There are at least five non-dairy milks that I can think of off the top of my head but which is the best. Oat, Almond, Coconut, Hemp, Soy? All run possible risks of other health and dietary options. If a person allergic to tree nuts that eliminates both almond and coconut. As well as the strong flavors that go along with both variations of the milk. Hemp does not have any real allergen negatives but it does have a strong flavor that may not mix well with coffee, especially if people are particular about their latte taste. The downside to oat milk is that it contains more sugar and it has gluten. If someone has celiac disease this can be not the safest option. And what has always been the downside to soy is that you could be allergic or if your family has a high risk of breast cancer it is best to avoid anything that is soy or high in soy content.

Then comes the issue, if you are grabbing a coffee at a more bougie coffee shop, of latte art. For some it is the main reason to get a latte to begin with. Some of these milks, because they are thinner and steam differently than regular milks, do not allow for foam or art. This sounds ridiculous but it is a very important part of an avid coffee drinkers experience. Sometimes the heart or leaf or flower makes someone’s day.

For me personally, my go to is a soy vanilla latte. I like it because the milk is a little creamier and the flavor is not as strong in comparison to the nut based mylks and not as sweet as the oat and hemp.

Ich bin tatsächlich immer noch 37. Es ist krass, oder? Da hat man das Gefühl, die Zeit rast an einem vorbei, aber wenn man regelmässig einen Check-In macht, fällt auf: so schnell geht das Ganze dann doch nicht.

Kürzlich darüber gelesen, was ein "deep life" ist und was ein "shallow life". Ich möchte gerne mehr "deep life". Und das heisst: an mehreren Stunden am selben Buch lesen. Mich in ein Thema richtig vertiefen, nicht mal eben oberflächlich drüber hinwegsurfen. Informationen verarbeiten, WIRKLICH verarbeiten. Und die Hände weg vom Smartphone. Denn wann hab ich das letzte Mal das Smartphone beiseite gelegt und dachte: boah, das hat mir jetzt so richtig gut getan, das habe ich jetzt gebraucht! Ich schätze, das muss irgendwann so 2009 gewesen sein. Oder auch gar nie.

Und so sitze ich hier in einem Restaurant, eine "Golden Mylk" vor mir, ein Getränk, das gerade viel zu süss schmeckt für meinen Gaumen, das mir hier aber einen Sitzplatz für die nächsten zwei Stunden garantiert. Ich habe vorhin ein Buch über Pilze gekauft, auf das ich mich freue, ebenso wie die tausend anderen Bücher, die anfangen, meine Wohnung zu überwuchern und die sich eigenständig fortzupflanzen scheinen. Insgesamt scheint mir aber, dass es schlimmere Gewächse in einer Wohnung geben kann als diese doch sehr formschönen Gebilde, mit denen wir unsere Gedanken düngen können. Tatsächlich wollen Gedanken liebevoll gegossen und gepflegt werden, sie brauchen Zuwendung, denn sonst ziehen sie sich zurück und lassen Platz für die Art von Gedanken, die sich damit beschäftigen, wie man die Zeit totschlagen könnte - Zeit, die man lieber am Leben lassen sollte. Am Schluss ist es genau das, diese Betrachtung, als wäre Zeit etwas, das es zu verschwenden gilt, am Besten mit beiden Händen zum Fenster rausgeworfen, dabei ist Zeit eins unserer kostbarsten Güter und wir sollten knauserig damit umgehen, denn irgendwann ist sie abgelaufen.

Deshalb bin ich auch ständig dabei, mir zu überlegen, wie ich meine Zeit gestalten möchte und was darin Platz haben darf und was nicht. Es ist die Frage, welche Bücher ich lesen möchte und welche Hobbies mir etwas bringen, es ist die Frage, was mich mit einem tiefen Gefühl von Zufriedenheit und Sättigung zurücklässt und was mich hungrig zurücklässt, weil es mir nichts gibt. Und das hundertste Katzenvideo ist nunmal nicht dasselbe wie über die Erlebnisse und Erkenntnisse Humboldts zu lesen. Ist es einfach nicht, denn Humboldt löst in mir den Wunsch aus, selbst auf Forschungsreise zu gehen, sei es nach innen oder nach aussen, Neues zu lernen, mich weiterzuentwickeln, während das Katzenvideo mich mit einem kurzen Lächeln zurücklässt - und dann mit nichts weiter. Uns unterscheidet in dem Sinn nicht allzuviel von Drogensüchtigen, ist das Video doch nur ein Dopamin-Kick, den wir uns verschaffen.

Deshalb bin ich sehr froh, dass ich immer noch 37 bin und dass dieses Lebensjahr eine Spur langsamer zu vergehen scheint. Ich freue mich riesig auf die Jahre, die da noch kommen. Und vermutlich brauchte es diese nahende Midlife-Crisis, um endlich mal den Wert der Zeit zu realisieren.
