I don’t like your arepas //

You used to make me your arepas

because they were your favorite, you said.

Your favorite, but never as good as your mom’s;

she can make them better.

The first time I tried them,

I knew I didn’t like them,

I think I knew I didn’t like them,

how could I not know whether I liked something

that was in my own mouth?

But I pretended I did

or maybe told myself I did

because they are your favorite,

only your favorite because eating them for you

is like twisting an heirloom necklace

nervously around your finger to keep calm:

a hand-me-down behavior

that you couldn’t let go of if you tried.

And I watched you

carefully select the proper ingredients

like pieces of a puzzle

and open the windows a crack

so that we wouldn’t fully suffocate

on the smoky air

inevitably filling the room.

That attention to detail,

that calculation without concentration,

that balance between choice and nature,

that must’ve been enough

to call it a labor of love, right?

When you gave me arepas

over and over

that was love,

right?

So every time the squish

of raw dough and hot oil

filled my mouth and coated my tongue,

I smiled

despite a vague feeling of sickness

in my stomach

and a quiet burning

in my lungs.

But now the sickness is pin-pointable and clear

and the burning is loud in my wheeze.

I don’t like your arepas!

I never did,

and now we both will go on

with you following that recipe,

making the same old little golden disks,

and even though they’re not quite

like your mom’s,

with me being glad

I’ll never have to be the one to compare them.
