hi its the ring for jeeves analysis anon sorry im so illusive can't help my mysterious nature its inexplicable, quick question: have you read any psmith??? if so thoughts on them do you hold any opinions, postulations, assumptions etc. in re: queercoding, possibly even queerer coded than jeeves series??
Mysterious Ring for Jeeves anon! Just when I thought you forever borne away on the four winds, you have returned again to the masked ball to drop your calling card (three black goose feathers and a shard of mother of pearl collected from the silver sands by the light of the season's first full moon) into the hollowed-out tree stump at the edge of the garden. I receive and understand your message, and shall await your signal directly the cock crows thrice.
Now, to answer your question, Psmith had been on my "should really get around to it" list for ages, but this ask prompted me to finally download the Psmith in the City audiobook and put it on while I was packing and now I DO have thoughts! My first thought was that I had no idea working in a bank was so much like working in hospitality, but that's a post for another day.
Short answer: yes, this is queer as hell. And it isn't even the first non-Jeeves Wodehouse book I've read that felt even more queer coded than Jeeves-- the first was Ukridge (aka It's Always Sunny in London), which I'm going to go ahead and compare and contrast with Psmith, because I feel like I'm starting to uncover a pattern in Wodehouse's POV characters that I think could lend support to queer readings of a lot of his works.
For those who aren't familiar, Ukridge is ALSO the tale of an extremely blatant self-insert character inescapably captivated by the magnetic personality of an old school friend. Corky, a starving writer who's always struggling to get his articles published in magazines and is totally not Wodehouse by a different name, is deeply irritated by the get-rich-quick schemes of his freeloader friend Ukridge. He knows Ukridge is taking advantage of him, and rarely has a positive thing to say about him, yet clearly finds something about his indefatigable spirit immensely compelling: "to me this tame subsidence into companionship with a rich aunt in Wimbledon seemed somehow an indecent, almost a tragic, end to a colourful career like that of S. F. Ukridge. [...] I should have had more faith. I should have known my Ukridge better. I should have realised that a London suburb could no more imprison that great man permanently than Elba did Napoleon."
This quotation is followed by Corky finding out that Ukridge has acquired six Pekinese dogs (which will turn out to have been pinched from his aunt) that he's planning to train for show biz, and would Corky like to invest. If you wanted to know.
The queerness is rather more unilateral in Ukridge than in Psmith, but no less glaring for that. Corky really doesn't seem to like it when Ukridge is interested in a woman, and shows little to no interest in women himself, iirc. I mean, the first time he sees Ukridge in the company of a woman he sounds almost betrayed: "Never in the course of a long and intimate acquaintance having been shown any evidence to the contrary, I had always looked on Stanley Featherstonehaugh Ukridge, my boyhood chum, as a man ruggedly indifferent to the appeal of the opposite sex. I had assumed that, like so many financial giants, he had no time for dalliance with women—other and deeper matters, I supposed, keeping that great brain permanently occupied." THIS is his reaction to Ukridge announcing that he wants to get engaged: "The thing was too cataclysmal for my mind. It overwhelmed me." GIRL.
If I had no prior familiarity with Wodehouse and I read this book, I would be asking which straight boy hurt him.
Finally, one of the Ukridge stories contains this exchange between Corky and a pugilist Ukridge has decided he's going to make a star, which I would like to present here without comment before moving on:
“You ever been in love, mister?” I was thrilled and flattered. Something in my appearance, I told myself, some nebulous something that showed me a man of sentiment and sympathy, had appealed to this man, and he was about to pour out his heart in intimate confession. I said yes, I had been in love many times. I went on to speak of love as a noble emotion of which no man need be ashamed. I spoke at length and with fervour.
Skipping merrily along, let us now come back around to Psmith in the City, starting with the primary POV character and then bringing in Psmith's relationship to him.
Mike is an even more blatant self-insert than Corky. This would have been obvious even if I didn't already know that in his young adulthood Wodehouse, owing to the fact that his father could no longer afford to send him to Oxford, had worked as a clerk at the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank. The jokes are too precise to not be from personal experience. As Mike is our audience avatar, he's naturally the more normal, less distinctive character. Despite his relative nondistinctness, though, he's written in such a way that it's clear Wodehouse deeply identified with him. The sections where he's feeling emotions like homesickness or out-of-placeness or sympathy, for instance, are very vivid and evocative. You really feel what Mike is feeling.
Then there's Psmith, manic pixie dream boy and destroyer of bad managers. He handles every situation with a debonair smile on his face and breezy condescension in his voice, completely unflappable... except with regards to Mike. His feelings typically aren't described in as much detail as Mike's are, but it's obvious he adores him, to the point of slight codependence. He needs Mike near him to hear his thoughts on life, and nobody else will do. As much as he tries to maintain his air of blithe nonchalance at all times, real emotion slips through whenever the situation involves separating him from Mike or Mike being in danger.
When Mike is moved to the Cash Department, Psmith is immediately desolate. I love the way he's like, "but- but if you relocate Mike, then WHO pray tell will PAY ATTENTION TO ME?" and this is a genuine crisis for him. He resents the new guy just for not being Mike. Local annoyingly imperturbable gadfly inconsolable due to boybestfriend going to work in a different department than him, more at eight. Then, when Mike gets into the fight at Clapham Common, Psmith feels genuine fear as he prepares to intervene in the fight and tell Mike to make a run for it.
Another factor I feel makes the queer coding stronger here is that unlike Bertie and Jeeves, there isn't an obvious plausibly deniable reason for Psmith and Mike to always be together. Jeeves is Bertie's employee. He's an unreasonably devoted and loyal employee, but you expect a gentleman to be accompanied by his valet about town, and for the gentleman and valet to share accommodation.
Psmith and Mike are just like that. They live together because they like each other and want to. Psmith spends the whole book essentially treating Mike like his boyfriend and sugar baby, again, simply because he wants to. I mean, the novel literally opens with Psmith bringing Mike home to meet his parents, and Psmith's father later refers to Mike as the "youngster [Psmith] brought home last summer." Psmith invites Mike to go out on an excursion with him "hand in hand" not once, but twice. The end goal of all his scheming is for him and Mike to be together at Cambridge.
'I need you, Comrade Jackson,' he said, when Mike lodged a protest on finding himself bound for the stalls for the second night in succession. 'We must stick together. As my confidential secretary and adviser, your place is by my side. Who knows but that between the acts tonight I may not be seized with some luminous thought? Could I utter this to my next-door neighbour or the programme-girl? Stand by me, Comrade Jackson, or we are undone.' So Mike stood by him.
I find it very notable that despite one of the big themes of the book being Mike and Psmith feeling uncertain about the future and trying to figure out what they want to do in life, neither of them ever mentions or thinks about marriage as something they might want someday. From what I've seen it looks like that might change in later books, but it stuck out in this one. And it's not like they couldn't have! Mr Waller's daughter and her on-again-off-again fiance were at that extremely awkward dinner, and that could have prompted a thought about whether or not the prospect of engagement sounded personally appealing to either of the boys.
This book feels like a wish fulfillment fantasy in much the same way the Jeeves books do. Imagine you have a fascinating friend who, using his money and/or resourcefulness, can rescue you from your terrible job and terrible shitty apartment (or other, richer varieties of soup, if you're Bertie Wooster), freeing you to pursue the life you truly want. He's clever, and quotes all your favorite Shakespeare lines, and is intensely devoted to you (he's also kind of a weird stickler about clothes but you can put up with that). And all he asks for it is that you look at him with awed wonder and gratitude and tell him he's a genius a few times a day.
So! In conclusion, I think you could read this as romantic or queerplatonic according to your fancy, but there's certainly nothing straight about it. And loath as I am to speculate about the personal lives of people who were alive in recent memory, I'm kind of starting to have some questions about P. G. Wodehouse. But that's neither here nor there. I'm going to go read some fanfic. Thank you so much for the question, Mysterious Ring for Jeeves Anon!

Get on TV doing comedy by 13th February 2015
Have there been any changes to your goal since the original submission? If so, what changes in direction have you taken and why?
The basic strategy is to intuitively create funny stuff, see what works, put a comedy routine together that I can deliver on TV… and start stalking The Chaser team from ABC TV.
It’s proven rather challenging; but hey, it’s a stretch goal so that’s normal, right?
What are the key action that you have taken toward your goal?
Wrote it in my goal book. Worried about Meditated on it every day.
Completed a Stand-Up Comedy course with City East Community College
Wrote 20 minutes of comedy material for my upcoming Stand-Up Comedy course graduation show on March 23rd 2015. The show got postponed several times beyond my goal date; apparently, that’s show biz for ya.
Auditioned for Short & Sweet Theatre Sydney, 2015. Landed the role of Tom in LockOut: The Musical (a comedy). Rehearsed for ages. Went on stage. Got rave reviews: “a wonderful song and dance musical performance extraordinaire”
Set up/updated my social media presence including my comedy blog, Facebook page, Google+ business page, Twitter feed, Instagram Account, LinkedIn profile, StarNow profile and YouTube Channel; all linked and automated wherever possible. At least Google will take me seriously now.
Configured my comedy blog to auto-upgrade & resolved some technical issues to minimise future need for IT support.
Engaged an SEO consultant to check my onpage SEO strategy.
Made these funny videos to promote LockOut: The Musical. Got feedback on what worked in them.
Made a video about my cleaner; which turns out to be full of lies, but is nonetheless funny.
Attended an Improv Theatre Sydney workshop at Giant Dwarf Theatre, which is run by The Chaser team. Totally failed to meet any of them.
Asked fellow Comedian Susie Youssef, who appeared on The Chaser’s Media Circus in November 2014, how she got on the show. She said “The Chaser guys called me”. When I asked “How do I get them to call me?”, she replied “Spend 10 years getting to know them”. Bit of a problem given my February 13th deadline.
Landed the role of Sidebar in Audience Therapy, another comedy play in Short & Sweet Theatre Sydney 2015 Festival. I play a Dr Phil-like TV therapist, who is basically an excellent showman but an incompetent therapist. Lots of audience participation and interaciton.
Attended the Comedy On The Edge workshop at The Chippendale Hotel . Got up and delivered 3 minutes of material, and got feedback on it. Several comedians said I was funny, and that it’s really hard to make comedians laugh.
Went to lots of comedy shows to suss out the vibe and see what works, and what doesn’t.
Asked my Comedian mate Ray Badran about his agent, Century Entertainment. Networking, networking, networking. He recommended them.
Outsourced my YouTube video SEO by finding a great local contractor on elance.com. Trained and built a working relationship for her to automate future YouTube video SEO and blog posting.
Set up a no-contact boundary with my mother, so I can feel good about myself for the first time in my life.
Began studying Tai Chi to manage my stress levels.
Moved to Bondi, a more creative area than boring old Lane Cove. Got a new lease on an apartment, and on life.
Practised doing comedy with everyone I talked to, including my property manager, people on the bus and at the beach.
Went to the beach, meditated and played drums every day to create a sustainable work-life balance.
Went to bed early whenever I could.
Spent way too long writing this submission.
What have you learned about business and/ or yourself during this challenge?
Getting on TV requires actually knowing people who cast stuff for TV, and having an agent.
To do Stand-up on TV, I need to have a solid routine which I already know works in front of a live audience. I need to get in front of live audiences in order to do develop that.
I’m only really funny when I feel safe and am not stressed out.
It’s a journey, not a destination. Keeping this in mind absolves all failures challenging learning experiences in which goals appear to still be located in the future.
What has been the outcome of this?
I’m a lot closer to living my dream than I was 3 months ago.

Interview Questions for Ren Harvieu, God is in the TV ‘In Conversation with…’article
We do like to ask some ‘off-the-wall’ questions, also some slightly tongue-in-cheek and left-field ones not connected to the music business at all. There are also a few multiple questions and I’ve mixed them up a bit so that the subjects keep changing. Many of them are open-ended, giving you the opportunity to be as verbose as you wish. Please ignore any question you do not wish to answer.
Hi Lauren, my name is David Bentley, I write for a UK-based e-zine God is in the TV (GIITTV).
The objective of this interview, which will be published in GIITTV within a week of receiving your responses, is to introduce you to a new audience in the UK and abroad and to promote your forth on ming album.
The interview will also feature some embedded videos and/or audio unless you ask us not to do that.

Hi Lauren, thanks for joining us today. How are you?
I’m in a great mood today thanks. I had foot surgery last week and so I cant leave the house or really move for 6 weeks but I feel strangely calm about the whole thing, I dont mind bein
For the benefit of readers who may not be familiar with you, how would you describe yourself as an artist, in a paragraph?
You have released two singles, ‘Teenage Mascara’ and just now ‘Yes, Please’ from your second album, ‘Revel in the Drama’ which is scheduled for next April and the first one was well received by broadcasting ‘tastemakers’. How does the album differ from the first one, ‘Through the Night?’
The difference between Revel In The Drama and Through The Night is that this is a much more personal album. I spent the last couple of years honing my songwriting craft and these lyrics have come straight from my gothic salfordian brain. Its darker, more intense, stranger but still has the beauty of Through The Night. I think both albums sit nicely together.
Since 2015 you’ve been co-writing with Romeo Stodart of the Magic Numbers and he appeared on stage with you at your recent concerts. Will that relationship continue? Do you prefer to control the songwriting process yourself, or are you content to work with other music or lyric writer(s) into the future? If the latter, who has the final say?
I’ll keep writing with romeo till I die if he wants to. He’s the best of the best, and he understands me. I never really felt understood as an artist till I met him. I feel so comfortable in his presence that I let it allllll out, not just the versions of me t
You signed with Universal, a huge corporation, as a 17-year old. Is that too young, or are there any benefits in being ‘bloodied’ in the industry at such a tender age?
I think I was too young, although Universal were great that wasn’t the problem. But there was a lot going on behind the scenes that I was dealing with. I wasn’t a show biz kid from a showbiz family and I had real problems that seemed bigger than singing about about being dumped by some boy. I felt too young and overwhelmed but also too streetwise and smart for it all. It was a confusing time.
They say that everything happens for a reason. In 2011 you suffered a life-changing event, just as your debut album was about to be released, and one which set you back several years. Eight years on do you think the dreadful accident in which you broke your back has had any positive repercussions?
I think there had been positive repercussions,I dont think I would have started writing if it wasn’t for the accident. I dont
What attracted you to signing with Bella Union for your new album?
Well
Do you have any role models in the music business? A hero or heroine? Anyone you would enjoy being “mentioned in the same breath” with? (Dusty Springfield comes to mind, also perhaps Shirley Bassey).
I really admire Fiona apple because she does whatever the hell she wants. And her records are stunning, unique and completely un compromising.
You are compared occasionally with Elkie Brooks (I’ve done it myself!), a different kind of singer perhaps but a highly respected one who hails from the same city, and even the same suburb as you. And she’s still performing, in her seventies. Is there anything you feel you can learn from her and, indeed, are you ever in contact with her?
I dont know Elkie personally but I love her shes a legend. Rising Cost Of Love is my jam!
You left Salford and relocated to London a while ago. Do you miss it? How did the move impact on your creativity?
I really miss the north, everything about it but I needed to leave because I was really sad and I knew if i didnt do something soon I was going to slip down the back alleyof my mind and maybe disappear forever. I have memories on every street, bus stops make me emotional. Corner shops where me and my friend would try and get booze in our school, theres just memories everywhere and I needed a clean break. To create some distance so I could write about it
When you’re writing, how do most of your songs start life? A piano part? A chord? A melody? Does inspiration simply come, or do you have to seek it?
I feel inspired everyday by everything. When writing a song I like to visualise it, like a film, frame by frame. Sometimes I move around, dance, put on voices. Romeo will play something off the cuff that’s so beautiful that I’ll just start shouting and laughing and hugging him. Its the closest I get to spirituality. Writing wise, I want the narrative to have as much depth as possible, I want to feel something and I feel it is my duty to give the emotion and the stories the respect they deserve. I take it very seriously.
Do you see yourself as a live artist, or a recording artist, or both?
I see myself as both. I get to appease the introvert in me by being in the studio and attend to the outrovert by playing live.
How would you personally measure ‘success’? By ‘breaking’ America? Or something more modest?
Success to me would mean I get to create and perform music for all time and make a living on it. Success to me would mean that people are touched and moved by my music. I would love to be a voice to someone that can comfort them, just as say Rufus Wainwirght was to me when I was a depressed 14 year old. I’m not doing this just to stroke my own fragile ego, I genuinely want to reach o
When I saw your show at the Deaf Institute in Manchester recently, in one song (I think it was ‘Cruel Disguise’), you reached and sustained a note that convinced me and those in my company that you could probably tackle opera singing. Do you have any ambitions to perform in that or any other genre?
I would love to learn opera. I think
Back in 2012, while you were recovering, you performed several James Bond film theme tunes with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, including ‘You only live twice’ and ‘Nobody does it better’, both of which arguably could be applied to you. Do you picture yourself as a ���Bond girl’ in the sense of recording the theme to a future movie, or do you even have any acting ambitions to actually play such a role? After all, the new album is constructed so that you can “revel in the drama of my life” as you say. (Incidentally, a female friend of mine – also from Salford – commented that you look like a 1950s Hollywood movie star).

I saw one of your Christmas Special shows at the Soup Kitchen in Manchester in 2015. During the show you told a story about how a school choirmaster prevented you joining a musical assembly on four occasions for no better reason than that there was something about you that he didn’t like. Your rejoinder to that was “Well, fuck him” and of course you soon went on to release demos on MySpace which were picked up by a local manager and sent on to Amy Winehouse’s producer. The rest is history. A new song, ‘Little Raven’ was written cathartically as one to your younger self when you had no label and didn’t know if it would ever be recorded. What advice would you give to young people who find doors being slammed in their face as that schoolmaster did to you?

What touring plans do you have to support the release of the new album?
We are organising a tour right now around the UK, quite a big one its really exciting. I also cant wait to tour outside of England, I’ve never done that.
If you weren’t a musician what would you be? Do you ever aspire to being ‘something else’ entirely (model, politician, footballer, train driver…?!)
I think I’d try and be a fiction writer. I love books and stories and characters. I heard Donna Tartt say something life ‘as much fun as it is to read a book, writing one is one level deeper’ There’s something about losing myself into another world entirely that really appeals to me.

Sounds easy right? Here’s the thing, what ties these steps together is a well written business plan. In step one you get your vision on paper. How big is the room you want? How many tables? Is the decor upscale or more working class? What food and beverages will you sell? Do you want a full bar and kitchen?
Putting your vision on paper guides your research into the startup and operating costs (step 2). For instance, an upscale room catering to social players may require a location in a hip part of town with higher rents, versus a family oriented room in a more commecial part of town. A room selling snack and sodas needs less capital to start than one requiring a full kitchen and bar. Both will have very different sales and expense projects as well.
Finally, you need to execute! You have to put in the work. Write the plan, talk to bankers, commercial real-estate brokers and landlords, take bartending or business courses if you don’t have the skills, do your research. And along the way continue to update and tweak you business plan. If you take consistent action I guarantee you will realize your goal of owning a pool hall business.

Like I mentioned last week, we’re off this week until the new year, or New Year, so here are a collection from a bunch of our Onyx Path crew thinking back on the year that was.

The Goodz:
Pugmire is not only out but being well received. We delivered a beautiful book to the backers and marketplace… and I think we got it out ahead of schedule as well… despite making 60+ corrections at the press proof (again, sorry about that Rich).
We successfully KS’d two non WW related IPs this year… Monarchies of Mau and Cavs of Mars.
Exalted is moving again. We have delivered a dozen critters… some NPCs… a Jumpstart and the first real supplement to fans (although the PoD version will hit in 2018).
We wrapped up a couple of lingering KS’s … namely V20 Dark Ages and Book of the Wyrm.
I survived making Beckett’s Jyhad Diary.
We successfully KS’d our first CofD 2e line… and it did really well. CTL 2e outdid every CofD KS that has come before… and that gives me hope that HtV2 will also do well this year.
The Badz:
Losing Stew. Still having trouble really processing that one.
Artist losses earlier in the year. We ended up losing a chunk of non WoD/CofD artists in Q1 and Q2. None of it was our fault… some artists went onto bigger and better projects (which is a good thing). Then we had those who decided that they wanted double their original rate…

2017 was significant for OP because this was the first year we released a creator-owned game, Pugmire, while focusing on delivering what we promised via our Kickstarters. We were also able to strengthen our partnership with White Wolf, and Beckett’s Jyhad Diary is one title that is representative of that collaborative effort. This year we also met a lot of new fans who’d never heard of Onyx Path before, and because we planned for bigger outreach with our expanded catalog this year we were able to quickly get the word out about what we do. That, coupled with new additions to our staff, means we’ve been able to adapt and take advantage new opportunities more quickly than we could have with fewer people. It was definitely a year of both change and growth, and we take the lessons we’ve learned to plan for 2018.
Fast Eddy Webb, Pugmire creator and our “Develop-At-Large”, and the guy that kept White Wolf alive through the CCP years, has some thoughts:
Wow. 2017 has been a rollercoaster ride of emotion, in both the worst and best ways possible. On a personal level, it’s been a chaotic year. Two international moves (one from the US to Ireland, and one back) hammered at my zen like a stubborn nail in a plank of wood. As much as we loved living in the Republic of Ireland, it was clear that now isn’t the right time for us as a family to make that move, which is why we’re now back in the States. Further, we lost our beloved Murray (inspiration for Senechal Murra of Pugmire) to a heart attack in late September. I’m writing this months later, and I still sometimes have nightmares about that night. I still miss him terribly.
It hasn’t been all doom and gloom, however. For one thing, living in Europe for six months was amazing. I got the chance to meet a number of Irish fans and peers while I was here and at conventions like Gaelcon. Further, I reconnected with my English friends at Dragonmeet in Hammersmith, London. I visited some amazing places during my time here, and picked up some idioms that will probably stay lodged in my vocabulary for years. Oh, and I gained an appreciation for Jameson and Smithwick’s.
But most of all, 2017 was the year when Pugmire went from being a thing in my head to a real, serious product line. The RPG came out on time in both PDF and physical copies, and it has already got a lot of positive comments at Gen Con and PAX Unplugged. More people asked for my autograph and my picture at this years Gen Con than in the past five years combined. Plus I got to hear so many great stories about people’s dogs — it’s like hearing about your character, but with dogs, which makes it better.
And we laid the groundwork for a great 2018. Everything from small-but-important strategic projects (like the Pugmire jumpstart) to big-and-exciting releases (like the Canis Minor community content program) will really help take Pugmire to the next step. Plus we’re hard at work on adding to the world of Pugmire, with products such as Monarchies of Mau and Fetch Quest.
Finally, I’ve been laying the groundwork for a new edition of a beloved game next year… but that’s a conversation for another time. (Here’s a hint, though: It’s not a game Onyx Path has ever published before!)
Yes, 2017 was a rollercoaster of emotion. Obviously, the loss of Murray and the stress of two major moves hit me and my family hard. But we know deep down that Murray and all of his friends continue to live on in the kingdom of Pugmire. And knowing that the game he inspired has reached so many hearts besides mine means the world to me. For that, I’ll always remember 2017 as the year when I truly understood what Pugmire could be.

2017 was my first year full time with Onyx Path, although I’d been a freelancer as a developer, editor, writer, and a few other things ever since OPP started. It has been quite a year. We launched several Kickstarters, continued our efforts to release at least one new product every Wednesday, attended a lot of conventions (more on that later) and have big things planned for next year. Some highlights:
Pugmire and Cavaliers of Mars:
I might be a bit biased as these are new games from Onyx Path, but I’m really excited we released Pugmire and had a great kickstarter for Cavaliers of Mars this year. Great games designed by awesome people.
Conventions:
Onyx Path went to more conventions this year than any year previously. Our year always starts with a great time at Midwinter Gaming Convention in Milwaukee, WI. We had a huge booth with White Wolf at Gen Con 50, and then again we shared space with them at PAX Unplugged last month. We also dropped by GameHoleCon for the first time this year with lots of Scarred Lands, Exalted, and Pugmire demos.
We’re reviewing and revising our convention strategy for the team and likely making some changes based on how this year’s shows went (so be sure to let us know what your favorite conventions are).
And finally, just myself, your fearless leader, RichT:
2017 was very much a transitional year for Onyx Path. We had planned out a five-year plan and 2016 was our sixth year of publishing, so we started adjusting what we were doing and with who. We no longer needed to be the heralds refuting that “White Wolf Is Dead!”, as the newly formed White Wolf was already letting people know that they were around.
We instead were able to start focusing our message on the amazing worlds we’re creating projects for; the WW licensed games of WoD, Chronicles of Darkness, and Exalted, our creator-owned game lines of Pugmire and Cavaliers of Mars, and our own settings of Scion and the Trinity Continuum, as well as our newest game: They Came From Beneath the Sea! All three powered by our new Storypath System.
We adopted the motto of “Many Worlds, One Path“, and it’s true!
We actually went light on Kickstarters in 2017, really just ones that extended the kinds of projects we can do because it was important to stretch that capability, but concentrated on fulfilling as many of the KSs we had already run as possible. We also extended our reach into Amazon with our fiction waves, and into the Apple and Google stores with the Onyx Dice Rolling App.
Pugmire led the way into selling our books in stores for the first time, and we started a relationship with Studio2 to make that happen in a way that makes sense for us, not just to get into stores willy-nilly.
Internally, we saw some developers leave for various reasons, and new devs step up and handle things, while we began to work with Eddy as a full-time freelance developer who could help out any dev that needed a hand. Which he did, in order to get several projects moved forward. Jammin’ James Bell was brought on to run our Kickstarters, and trained up fantastically in 2017 in preparation for a strong raft of KSs in 2018.
Beyond the business strategies, it was a tough year for everyone and a lot of our creative teams struggled with creating excellent projects while being buffeted left and right by the winds of life (and social media). Onyx just tried to stay on course, not get get overwhelmed by, oh, everything going on in the real world and even our unreal world of tabletop gaming, and to avoid getting embroiled in internet conflict.
I’d like to think we did well, and that we’re sailing into 2018 stronger and better set up to create awesome new projects than we were this time last year. There’s some things I would have liked to have done better, but I’ll tackle those items in a post after the New Year.
Thanks everyone for facing front like the true-believers that you all are, because we just can not do what we do without all of you…I’ll talk to you next year!

We caught up with professional dog walker Annie Rumbaugh to chat about the pups of Pittsburgh and how she’s scaled up her small biz.

No doubt about it. Pittsburgh native Annie Rumbaugh gets her steps in.
“On an average day, I’m walking 14 to 17 miles. My most ever was 23.2 miles in one day.”

Her dog walking business – Peachy Paws Pittsburgh – keeps her moving. Literally.
After graduating from the University of Pittsburgh, Rumbaugh moved to New York City where she lived for 3 and a half years. During her time in the city, she linked up with Brooklyn Bow Wow – a dog walking business that experienced astronomical growth.
“My first day there were only three dogs at the daycare,” Rumbaugh explains. “When I left there were 46 dogs there. The company grew a TON.”
The skills Rumbaugh gained in New York proved to be tremendously helpful as she made her way back to western Pennsylvania.
“We all took leash training courses, learned how to walk dogs at night, learned how to walk more than one dog at a time…I even ran our social media so I was helping to bring in new clients as well.”
We sat down for a Q&A with Rumbaugh to chat pups, Pittsburgh and advice for pet owners in the Steel City. We also got the lowdown on some of her favorite walking routes (Hint: her pro tips emphasize the Strip District).

Q&A with Annie Rumbaugh (Peachy Paws Pittsburgh)
Very Local: So, you’re a Pittsburgh native?
Annie Rumbaugh: Yep! I was raised in Ben Avon (graduated from Avonworth HS) and I currently live in Polish Hill.
Very Local: When did Peachy Paws get started?
AR: I started the business in December 2018. To be honest, at first, I wasn’t sure if I made the right decision. I didn’t make any money til February 2019. It wasn’t until April / May 2019 that I felt more confident and things started picking up.

Very Local: Why did you start a dog walking business?
AR: When I was unemployed, I was walking my boyfriend’s dog through the Strip District and I began to notice all the pet-friendly apartment buildings. I decided to print some business cards and started dropping them off and slowly meeting people. That led to gaining clients and, ultimately, starting my own business.
Very Local: How did you settle on the name Peachy Paws?
AR: Peachy Paws is dedicated to my dog Peaches; I got her for Christmas in 11th grade when she was a puppy. She became our family dog. Sadly, she passed away this past spring. I drew a picture of Peaches and came up with the name and logo as a tribute to her.

Very Local: Walk us through a typical day for Peachy Paws
AR: Every day is a little different. Typically, I try to check in with my clients around 7:30 am (to firm up my schedule) and then head out for walks beginning at 9:30 am. I try to start in Bloomfield and work my way through Lawrenceville toward the Strip District. All my clients’ dogs have different walk lengths; I can usually do one to two clients at a time. The smaller puppies only need about 15 minutes but some dogs need up to an hour walk.
Very Local: OK, surely you track your steps. Do you have a favorite step tracker or app?
AR: I just use the Health app on my phone. That day I walked 23.2 miles was a super early start and I didn’t get a break. At the time, I didn’t have a car – so I walked TO and FROM all my clients, including the ‘hour walk’ dog. Then, a client called and added a night slot, so it just ended up being an exceptionally high mileage day.

Very Local: How do you onboard clients? Do they pick a service or a type of walk for their dog?
AR: I offer my clients “social walks” or “individual walks.”
Social Walk: your dog is allowed to walk with other dogs.
Individual Walk: if your dog is aggressive or cannot be walked with other dogs.
Almost all my clients pay for social walks. From the experience I gained in New York, I’m good with multiple dogs at once. I’ve done up to four at once here in Pittsburgh. The main thing is you just have to make sure they are good dogs.
Very Local: You’re heading out for a day of dog walking. What type of gear or stuff do you take with you?
AR: ALWAYS have an umbrella (it’s Pittsburgh). I always take a waterbottle and some type of human snack for me. I always pack a flannel or a sweatshirt; you never know if it’ll rain or get cold.
Very Local: What is your favorite route to walk?
AR: Definitely the river trail in the Strip District. There are chairs so you can just sit and look out over the river. I have a dog right now with a leg injury so we just go and sit by the river and enjoy it.
Although my routes are based on client demands, I really like routes that take me from Bloomfield / Lawrenceville down to the Strip. Since my clients need me both morning and evening, sometimes I have to bounce back to Lawrenceville (from the Strip). I love walking the back streets where there is less foot traffic. Also, cutting through parks is really nice.

Very Local: Was there ever an Ah-Ha moment when things began to click and you knew this was the right decision?
AR: Yes, it was when I started getting dogs with set schedules. For a while, all my (clients’) dogs needed me just a few times per week. When I eventually got to a regular, 5-days-per-week schedule, things started to level out. Now, it’s to the point where my clients just let me know when they need me. There’s no minimum requirement; you can just sign up for one or two walks. Building a relationship with folks has led to regular, recurring business.
Very Local: You deal with so many different pups. What advice do you have for pet owners in Pittsburgh?
AR: If you are a first time dog owner, be sure to have a budget. Having a dog is like having a kid. And I am your puppy’s babysitter. I’ve met a lot of folks who are running home on their lunch breaks to walk their dog. That’s exactly where I can come in and make things easier for you.
Related to advice, you never realize how many chicken bones are on the street. In the Strip District, for example, I know exactly where the chicken bones are; there is a whole area on Penn Ave where I just have to watch out. Sometimes I won’t see it and then I am pulling chicken bones out of a dog’s mouth.
Very Local: What is the craziest moment you’ve ever had on a walk?
AR: My one client Moose and I were walking one day and we ran into this group of people ALL wearing Hawaiian shirts. They said they needed to take a photo with someone walking a dog. Well, I turned around and there was another group taking a photo of me walking Moose. I turned around; sure enough there was another group. And another group. There must have been eight groups on this Pittsburgh scavenger hunt and they ALL got photos of me and Moose from different angles. It was just crazy.

Very Local: What do you love most about being a dog walker?
AR: I feel like this is therapeutic. If you have a bad day, suddenly this dog is so happy to see you. They are like, “When are mom and dad coming home?” And then I show up and pet them and take them out.
Also, the exercise is so good. I hate cold weather, but I power through it. It makes me feel tough.
Very Local: Do you currently have a pet of your own?
AR: I have a cat named double cheeseburger. He was a stray I found during my time in New York. He’s here with me now in Pittsburgh.

Wicked Healthy - Cookbook Review & Giveaway!
Here's a super fun and exciting new vegan cookbook to tell you about! I am so stoked to be a part of the Wicked Healthy blog tour. This book is so beautiful and interesting!
For years it seemed like every vegan cookbook that was published was aimed at people who had never heard of avocado toast or overnight oatmeal. I like those things as much as the next vegan, but I don't personally need a recipe for them. Also, I'm super, super stoked that there are so many wonderful cookbooks to support people who are starting their vegan journeys. That said, it is so exciting and thrilling when I get my hands on a cookbook that is NOT aimed at beginners.
roasted garlic, oh how I love thee
Wicked Healthy is such an exciting book - it's aimed at a competent home chef who loves cooking and loves innovative and adventurous flavors. The book is absolutely beautiful and is really fun and inspiring just to read. Wicked Healthy is written by two brothers, Chad and Derek Sarno, and there is a distinctly masculine tone to the writing - like two brothers playing and sparring in the kitchen. It's not off-putting though, and it's nice to see this voice in a vegan cookbook, since that genre is largely dominated by female authors. Both brothers are also trained chefs, and that is another cool thing about this book - I didn't just make great recipes from it, I also learned some fun and useful new-to-me kitchen techniques from their recipes. I really love that!! It's so exciting when a good book also teaches you how to improve your own skills in the kitchen.

freeze the bread first and then slice it into the thinnest slices ever! GENIUS.

As soon as this book arrived, I started flipping through it, staring at all the amazing pictures, and writing up a (long) list of all the recipes I wanted to try. Happily, the next week was the birthday of one of my very best besties and I had invited her and her family over for dinner. I decided to make five different recipes from Wicked Healthy to celebrate!
When you love someone that much, you can make an entire 5-course meal out of recipes you've never tried before, because you know they will forgive you if the whole thing is a bust. Luckily, not a single thing I made was a bust. Far from it - we all loved our meal, and we had such a super fun evening together.
1st course:
Cucumber, Celery, Green Apple, and Kale Juice!
(from Juices and Cocktails / Juices and Coolers chapter)
Lately I've been kinda into green juice! I don't have a juicer though, so I pureed everything in my Vitamix and then strained it through several layers of cheesecloth. This recipes makes two big glasses of green juice, but I made 5 little appetizer / palate cleanser glasses - one for each of us. It was very yum - perfect hint of sweet from the apple, and a good balance of flavors!
2nd Course:
Roasted Beet Salad with Citrus and Tarragon Cashew Cream
I have the recipe for this beautiful and delicious salad at the end of this post! Check it out!
Wow, dudes. Check this biz out. I was very proud of myself. I got this plating idea straight from the photos in the book - because as you have probably noticed, I am not generally a plating wiz. I am more like an eating wiz. It was so fun to make something so gorgeous and have it all plated and ready when my friends arrived. I really wanted her to feel special!
This dish was so fun to prepare - there were many components, but none of it was difficult. The beets are roasted, the citrus is supremed, the little toasties are toasted, the tarragon cashew cream is pureed, the greens are tossed in dressing... It was such a pleasure to just take my time and enjoy all the different processes, and especially to have it all come together in such a beautiful and delicious result.

3rd Course:
Minted Pea Ricotta and Zucchini Toasts
Oh man, I think these beautiful little toasts might have been my favorite recipe of the evening. These were so delicious - delicate and bursting with perfectly balanced springtime flavors. These toasts would be appealing for breakfast, lunch, or dinner! The toasts have a lovely ricotta mixture, topped with lightly seared zucchini ribbons, and a sprinkle of microgreens. I used my panino press to just lightly grill the zucchini ribbons. Lightly cooking the zucchini ribbons made them softer for a more delicate curl, prettier, and more tasty too. Win-win-win!
The Minted Pea Ricotta mixture is absolutely stunning - a hint of lemon zest, shallot, and fresh peas (or frozen if it's not peak pea season!). One suggestion in the book is to use that ricotta mixture in homemade ravioli, which would definitely be 100% amazing and I would like to try that!
The recipe calls for Kite Hill Ricotta as a base for the Minted Pea Ricotta. To that point, this book does call for a few brand name items in some of the recipes (Kite Hill ricotta, Ninja Squirrel Sriracha, Beyond Meat burgers). That's not always my favorite thing in a cookbook, but I don't mind it in this case. If you don't have access to those brands, you could easily adapt. And the recipes themselves really add a lot, so it's never just a recipe for a store-bought burger with ketchup on it or whatever.

4th Course:
Roasted Cauliflower Fagioli
(from Soups and Stews chapter)
I love a good veggie stew, and I loved the idea of repurposing Pasta Fagioli with a whole head of roasted cauliflower instead of all the pasta... to make it more veggie-dense. Three cheers for veggies! That said, I did also use the optional suggestion to add some little noodles - I used some of my tiny little noodles that are so small they are practically Israeli couscous.
We all loved this summery stew, and there was even some left over for me to enjoy the next day. The recipe intro says that this stew will be even better the next day, and - uh - that was true! Next time I will just make it a day ahead of when I intend to eat it! Ha ha.
This cookbook definitely has recipes-within-recipes: for example, in order to make this, I made the Nana Sarno's Red Sauce. Not paying attention, I ended up making about 8 cups of red sauce, when the Fagioli recipe only called for two cups. I used some later for another recipe from the book and froze some to enjoy later as well.
5th Course:
Drunken Berries with Amaretto Gelato and Ninja Nuts
YESSSSSSSS. Hot DAMN this dessert was seriously something special. I won't lie... it was also a lot of work. But I was in the mood for a culinary adventure and I enjoyed every moment of the process. All the recipes in this book came together as described in the write ups, no surprises and no instances where something took twice as long to cook or burned in half the time. You know what I'm talking about. Because the recipes were so well-written, that made it easier and not stressful to embark on a big project like this.
This was a real recipe-inside-a-recipe adventure:
Make the Mango Sriracha Caramel, to make the Ninja Nuts.
Make the ice cream base, chill, churn the ice cream
Cut and macerate the berries.
Assemble.
EAT!!!
Almost all the desserts in this book (there aren't too many) are fancy, complicated special-occasion deserts like this. Obviously, you could just make individual components - but based on our experience of this glorious gastronomic delight, I would suggest going the whole nine yards. This was seriously such a special and delicious combo of flavors and textures. Each component - the berries, the gelato, and the nuts - were excellent on their own, and just glorious in combination with each other! I'm quite sure that this was the best homemade ice cream I've ever made. Excellent flavor and texture.
Mango Sriracha Caramel
This caramel sauce is called for in making the so called "Ninja Nuts" that were part of the dessert. It is so delicious! I made a half-batch, and was still left with a whole lot left over (the nuts recipe only calls for 3 tablespoons). Luckily, it is delicious, and it lasts a little while in the fridge. I couldn't find 100% mango juice, so I used mango-apricot juice, which worked wonderfully. The finished product is carmelly, mango-y, apricot-y, with a nice spicy kick at the end. So good!
Ninja Nuts!
These "ninja nuts" (so called because the recipe suggests using Ninja Squirrel Sriracha) are toasted almonds coated with the Mango-Sriracha caramel. I made these tasty little power nuggets to go with our dessert, but then Mr. VE&T completely fell in love with them and declared them to be the "all time flavor of flavors." So I have made several more batches since then! Once you've made the caramel, these are quick and easy to make. But be warned, they are really hard to stop eating!

The "Drunken Berries" component of the dessert was just lovely - fresh berries macerated in a mix based on Chambord liquer. What a great idea. And it was so nice to pour a little extra of the liquid over the gelato. Such a great combo with the somewhat-subtle Amaretto Gelato.
Since that dinner party, I've also made the Whole Roasted Zucchini with Red Sauce
and the Sriracha Kung Pao Brussels and Tofu (but I made it with broccoli) - which was an instant favorite! There are still so many more recipes that I have my eye on to try:

Roasted Beet Salad with Citrus and Tarragon Cashew Cream
Serves 6-8
This was the most popular salad at my SAF Restaurant in London. Over the years since then, I’ve served it at many supper clubs and dinners. It’s always a hit. Slow roasting the baby beets gives them a deep sweetness that balances the earthiness. Watercress brings sharpness and bite. Cashew cream contributes richness. Sherry vinegar has the spark. Bread crisps give it crunch. Between the textures and flavors—and even the colors—this sexy dish just hits all the buttons. —Chad
INGREDIENTS
ROASTED BEETS
12 small beets (3 pounds), rinsed, stems trimmed
1½ tablespoons everyday olive oil
3 sprigs fresh lemon thyme or regular thyme
Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
4 slices fresh lemon
2 tablespoons sherry vinegar
1½ tablespoons chopped fresh chives
BREAD CRISPS
1 small baguette (about 6 inches), frozen

METHOD
1. FOR THE BEETS: Preheat the oven to 250ºF. Cut a giant sheet of foil twice the length of a baking sheet and place half of it on the pan.
2. In a bowl, toss the whole beets with the oil and thyme sprigs and season with salt and pepper. Pour the beets onto the foil and scatter on the lemon slices. Leave space between the beets so they can steam. Fold over the other half of the foil and crimp all the edges, sealing the package tightly. Place the pan in the oven and slow roast until the beets are tender enough for a fork toslide in and out easily, 50 to 60 minutes, depending on the size of the beets. Open the package and let cool.
3. When cool, put on some gloves to prevent staining yourself and peel away the beet skins with a paring knife (not under running water). Then slice the beets into small wedges. At this point the beets can be chilled in the fridge for a day or two before serving.
4. Just before serving, toss the beet wedges in a bowl with the vinegar and chives. Taste a wedge, then season with more salt and pepper until it tastes good to you.
5. FOR THE BREAD CRISPS:
Defrost the bread slightly.
6. Heat the oil in a frying pan over medium-high heat.
7. While the bread is semi-frozen, cut into paper-thin slices on a mandoline. Place each slice one-by-one into the hot pan and cook until lightly browned and crisp, turning for even cooking, about a minute per side. Place on paper towels and immediately season with granulated garlic and salt. They will crisp up as they sit.
8. TO ASSEMBLE EACH PLATE:
Spread 1 to 2 tablespoons cashew cream in a line on the bottom of the plate. Arrange the beets, citrus segments, and bread crisps over the cashew cream, alternating the pieces.
9. Toss the watercress with the olive oil and lemon juice in a small bowl. Arrange the dressed watercress over the top of the salad. Finish with a pinch of flake salt and cracked black pepper.

What inspired you to become a personal trainer?

Loredana: I got my NASM Personal Training certification 5 years ago and have been coaching ever since. I continued with the NASM Corrective Exercise course, got certified to teach Yoga at YogaWorks and completed a NASM Nutrition certification as the most recent addition to my ongoing training.
