My Day at Radyr Golf Club Cardiff- Professional Reviews Guide

 Radyr Golf Club is the jewel in the crown of all the golf courses in Cardiff. Situated in the North of Cardiff, it is just a short drive away from the city centre and is on the major bus routes and has a train station near to the course itself. Radyr is very convenient to get to from Cardiff town centre by car- just check out the map on this page

The club has a very good driving range, a practice bunker and chipping area, and a good quality putting green. The clubhouse dates back over 100 years but has all the mod cons you would need with 2 bars and a restaurant area. The course has 18 holes and was designed by Harry S Colt back in 1902. It is set up on a hill overlooking the city of Cardiff with views right across the Bristol Channel making it one of the most picturesque courses in the country, but also being a bit exposed it can get windy.

Radyr is a parkland course which features 5 par 3 holes- giving lots of chances for that elusive ho;e in one! There are a number of very strong par 4 holes that can test the best professionals but not so difficult that amateur golfers cannot cope. Probably the best hole on the course is the par 4 ninth which takes 2 good hits to reach the green and features in Tony Jacklin’s favourite golf holes ever!

The greens at Radyr are famous for their quality and speed and have led to the course being chosen to host big tournaments at County and National levels including the Welsh National PGA Championship in 2015. You need to be very careful with your putting as you may end up well past the hole if you forget and think you are playing on an average golf course.

The round starts off with 3 of the easier holes to lull you into a false sense of security and the hits you with 3 very strong par 4’s in a row that test even the better golfers. The quality of all the greens is outstanding and you can only blame yourself for missing putts. The 7th and 8th are reasonable birdie chances with the above mentioned 9th finishing off the outward nine.

The back nine is varied with 2 spectacular par 3’s and the very difficult par 4 13th which is normally played into a headwind. The 16th and 17th holes are two more long and testing par fours that most people are happy to walk away from with a bogey The 18th hole has a second shot that is played from a height to a green that demands a good shot just to hold on it.

Off to the bar for a beer with friendly members and the end of a great day out at a golf course that is well worth the hype.
