A Quick Note:

I don't want to say finding consistency on this painting was hard (because, without a doubt, it's likely a me issue), but I can assure you it was a challenge!

The image above has a color edit I made. Every picture of this painting I found on different sites presents a different color gradient, so having a civil war between the two color depictions of Pankiewicz's work, I compiled the two primary colors, which stuck out in differentiating both sides.

Below are the two color versions of the painting I found.

The color could be due to a plethora of things. I believe the painting to be more blue than having an over-arching warmer sense caused by the lights, but I've never seen this in person, so I wouldn't necessarily know.

The Muse is not playing the lyre she is holding and the wings of Hermes are attached only to one leg. The role of the instrument is crucial for the interpretation of the painting. The Muse presses the sheet of paper with the lyre, lifting it and directing its sharp point towards Asnyk's head. The sheet is made similar in its form to the scythe above it, directed towards the manacled young men above the poet. The comparison between the figures introduced in this way suggests that the real nature of the inspiration is destructive for the poet.
