i just don't think there's a case for the subtext of the scene where Daniel walks in on "Rashid" praying being that they want to fuck each other. like you have Daniel, who doesn't remember San Francisco or Armand yet, who hasn't moved from "gay bars were a good place to score" to "Louis please tell me we fucked in the 70s", whose main goal is to "win" this interview and write this book and maybe prove himself worthy to Louis-- worthy of the mission he gave him in 1973 that neither of them remember and maybe worthy of being a vampire. and then there's Armand, who doesn't want Daniel there and is trying (successfully, at this point!!) to appease Louis without exposing any of his marriage-ruining secrets. even if Daniel is attracted to Armand, he's in that scene to get information and to figure out if Armand is really who he says he is. he's not even going about it in a coy way-- he's actually going about it in a weird and kinda racist way.

and Armand is being polite and giving him puppy eyes etc because he is playing the role of someone who is being paid to be polite to Louis' guests-- a role that, not for nothing, had explicit sexual implications for most of Armand's life that weren't necessarily his choice. like there is a LOT of subtext in that scene, especially once it's given the context of season 2. but what it's actually saying about the characters has nothing to do with (and tbh is more interesting than) their attraction to each other.

to me the point of the scene is to show once again that Daniel is willing to get like, downright mean in order to get the truth out of someone; and that Armand is willing to restrain himself even when someone is being an asshole to him, in service of Louis and the story that Louis is trying to tell. and reducing that to "they were flirting here" seems. idk. boring at best.
