I've finally finished it - but don't let the title fool you; it's not about worshipping Sleep Token as a concept in any way. It's about music and using pop-culture in witchcraft and how you can use that to build spell work and energetic offerings! It's a very long post that probably could be longer, but I hope it at least can inspire some new ideas in your practice!

Music is magical and can influence your spirit! Much like how media can affect our mental state, music can affect our spiritual.

Am i saying "play happy music to stay happy"? NO.

Im saying music can help your spirit process what its feeling! Your need of music to describe what you are going through at any moment is magic!

If youve been wronged, play that angry music! Let your spirit rage and headbang alongside whatever it is your playing to properly vent!

Play that sad playlist because youre distraught about your favorite character being removed from the show!

Play that mushy romance list because you feel giddy from your date!

Turn up the radio and listen because your spirit wants to dance.

Let it.

Your spirit needs music just as much as you do.

Something Beneath Ch. 5: Confrontation

The hotel had been abuzz with activity for the last week, staff and guests alike working nearly around the clock to prepare for the celebration. Lucifer himself had been roped into helping with decorations - and renovations. Charlie asked him to change out the lobby carpet for hardwood flooring and create sparkling crystal chandeliers. He replaced the wallpaper with clean cream paint and gold trim and just like that they had a ballroom.

The bar too got a makeover, supervised by Charlie and an anxious Husk. He watched everything Lucifer did with a wary - and then appreciative - eye, and in the end gave his approval of the extended countertop and array of on-tap drinks. Much to his delight, Lucifer had made a call and gotten a couple kegs of beezeljuice for the occasion.

It was strange how quickly time passed when one wasn’t a shut-in. A whole year since the last extermination, since Heaven had agreed to a truce while they figured out how redemption worked. A whole year since Charlie let Lucifer back into her life - and consequently dragged the others into his.

One particular ‘other’ was on Lucifer’s mind as he lounged against the new bar, sipping a basic glass of apple juice and looking over his work with a critical eye. He was confident in his skills, of course, and Charlie had responded with absolute delight when he revealed the completed room, but he wanted everything to be perfect. She’d spent so long with most of Hell ridiculing her dream, her father unfortunately among their number. Now she’d garnered a modicum of respect, and it was looking like the turnout was going to be a big one.

A shadow raced across the room.

Ah, right. The ‘other’ Lucifer had been thinking about.

“Lounging about, Your Majesty?” Alastor said as he formed beside the king and leaned his elbows on the polished countertop.

Song of the Six Realms review

4/5 stars Recommended if you like: fantasy, quests, music magic

I particularly enjoyed the first part of this book and getting to know the House of Flowing Water. I thought all the information about the musicians, dancers, and artists was interesting, and I liked learning about the way the patronage and apprentice levels worked. I also liked the camaraderie between the girls, even if some of it turned out to be false.

Once Xue leaves the House and begins traveling with Janglang there's fewer people and less worldbuilding for a while. Like Xue, I also began to get frustrated with the lack of answers and how she was consistently left alone with nothing but her qin. There was little action for a while there in the middle so while the descriptions were nice, I did feel my attention drifting somewhat.

I did enjoy the parts about music and the musical magic Xue uses to try and solve the mystery. The poetry wasn't my favorite, but the descriptions of the songs themselves were interesting and I liked the way Xue thought about and described the musical pieces. The music was definitely interesting and I wish it and the way certain songs could 'unlock' things was more of a focus of the story. Sure, it played a big part, but I definitely wanted more music magic.

Xue is left in the dark about a lot of things and so she tends to just float along trying to learn the Meng Manor and fill her days to prevent boredom. She's obviously destabilized by the change from apprentice in the House of Flowing Water to a guest at an esteemed lord's manor, and especially a Celestial's manor. Xue really shows her mettle and personality in the beginning of the story and at the end. Her strength comes through in different ways and I appreciated getting to see the different sides of her, from her love of beauty to her protective streak. I did wish there was more plot in the middle to continue showing those sides of her though.

The other characters kind of come in and out of the story at different times, so I don't totally feel like I got to know any of them very well. Janglang is supposed to be the love interest, but aside from some mild attraction, I'm not really convinced the two are in love. Xue spends half the book thinking he's grieving a fiancé for god's sake! I did like the addition of Chenwen and and Linwei, but would've liked it more if they'd been around more. I enjoyed Chenwen's humor and the way he teased Xue, which I feel like she reacted disproportionately to.

For a book focused on figuring out what Xue's uncle and Janglang's shifu had discovered, the two actually do very little investigating and there's often little adventure to be had. As other reviewers mention, different things keep coming up as oh-so-important plot points and then end up being minor aspects of the story. Xue getting presented to the Sky Emperor (King?) and Consort but then it goes over quickly and well, and there doesn't seem to be much of a lasting effect from her performance. Likewise, there's this whole thing with Janglang's mother....but in the end she's diabolical and evil but not particularly menacing.

I also found the 'mystery' to be a bit obvious. I clued in to the 'who' as soon as they're introduced and I also clued into the red herring as soon as it came into the story as well. Unfortunately, it takes Janglang and Xue almost the entire rest of the story to figure it out, leaving me smacking my head when they trust certain people or fall into certain traps.

Overall, this is a good neutral read if you're looking for something light to occupy your time. It's entertaining enough and I find myself feeling pretty neutral on the matter. I did like it, but the beginning and ending were the most interesting to me, and things in the middle kind of lagged.

Ocarina Song Correspondences

As I further develop my own Hylian Faith that I practice in a way that emulates Link, I find the ocarina to also be an important spiritual tool as the Ocarina of Time was an important tool in the Hero of Time’s arsenal, as well as the key to open the door to the sacred realm. Of course other instruments may also be used, considering how important a lyre harp has been in the series as well.

Most of my practice is energy cultivation, meditation, and prayer, but I’m also slowly working on my own magical system utilizing various tools for spells, such as talismans and music magic. Due to this, I have devised a basic correspondence list for many songs from The Legend of Zelda. Please bear in mind: I am super new to this so my correspondences will be fairly limited. Also please remmber that your path is your own and you may make your own correspondences. Intention and sincerity are the most important elements. Some of these correspondences are related to specific deities, sages, races, and even characters since people will have very individual practices and I want to hopefully provide inspiration for one’s own faith.

My Trolls AU

It's time for another installment in our world-building series! I don't think this counts as a spoiler, so there's no need to worry about cutting any of it.

The Trolls are creatures of magic, and their bodies are composed of magic. Most of the magic they use is Chaotokinesis, which involves manipulating their hair to do things like change colors, grow, and access a "hammerspace" pocket dimension. The Trolls also use music to access a universal magic that can change reality. Music is all about connection, and it can be used to communicate with willing participants much more than just words. It can also be used to bring a group together to work on a single goal, like building a big structure. It can also control plants and animals to the tune of the musician. This connection to magic is one of the reasons why Bergens "feels true happiness and joy" after eating a magical/musical troll.

The Universe loves to work with you. Sometimes, it will wait for you to call upon it before sending you the messages and gifts that you're waiting for.

Something Beneath Ch 4: Crossroads

It was nearing midnight when Lucifer started on his nightly jaunt. He was beyond making excuses about insomnia or security rounds; he hoped he’d run into Alastor in the music room again. They’d played together in secret several times a week over the past few months and Lucifer… really enjoyed it. He even found he was beginning to enjoy the infuriating demon’s company. Infuriating even when he was bearable, it seemed.

The faint strum of an acoustic guitar met Lucifer’s ears and he picked up his pace. There, inside the music room, Alastor sat on the edge of the small stage they’d accidentally created and played the blues. Lucifer drifted closer, standing beside him and simply listening. The only indication Alastor gave to suggest he knew he was there was the flick of an ear. Wordlessly, Lucifer sat beside the demon and with a swirl of his fingers produced a harmonica. He considered it for a moment, took in the flow of Alastor’s playing, and put his lips to the instrument.

This time the connection was instantaneous. It felt like meandering down a path, their melodies slowly winding together until Lucifer felt it sweep around him - a chill autumn breeze carrying dead leaves and dust. One by one the lights flickered out until the pair were plunged into darkness. Lucifer knew - as he always knew, when he was like this - the power in the entire hotel had gone out.
