continuing my analysis of this ridiculously cute splash animation source Part One

before maui even has time to think "wait where did my hook end up?"

for a brief shining moment, maui's head is big enough to hold his ego. almost

nice catch.

but wait, lets look at that moment just a second longer, where he catches the hook

is it just me or does his new hook seem to have a hair trigger? first it boinks him into a half-shape he clearly didnt intend, then maui's fin barely brushes the hook before he's back to man-form.

like in moana 1 he always had to put a moment of conscious effort into it, like channeling mana or even just giving a little squeeze. but in the trailers & promo stuff he seems like he shifts almost before he's touching the hook, or on accident like this. maybe its because this hook is basically brand new or maybe because he was super rusty? but even in the heart stealing flashback, when he was easily at the height of his mastery he wasnt quite this snappy. smooth, graceful, nearly seamless, yes- but deliberate, in control.

does this point to possibly maui being stronger in his powers? could he one day progress to the point where he doesn't need to rely on manaiakalani* quite as much? maybe more able to remotely channel mana thru it? I'd love a thor/mjolnir "are you the god of hammers" development for maui.

this is the kind of juicy animation detail i thrive on.

im gonna have to make a part three so i can give the next few frames space to breathe, because oh my god is it cute. less than 2 seconds of animation that clutch my heart and squeeze it like a squeaky rubber chicken. I still havent even gotten to the article itself because im hyperventilating over the finale of this dumb little 4th wall break promo animation.

*the hawaiian proper name for maui's hook, and the constellation scorpio. yes maui is a scorpio, he is a textbook scorpio. scorpio sun, leo rising, sagittarius moon and i might have to present a ted talk on the subject very soon.

Etho stood at the edge of the cliff, the chill of the void’s eternal breeze biting through his coat. The endless expanse stretched out before him, waves of darkness rippling like liquid shadows. Stars blinked in and out, their fragile light dancing over the inky waters. Somewhere out there, Xisuma sailed.

His fingers twitched against the hilt of his knife, an old habit from days long gone. Now, there was no one to guard against but his own longing. Etho’s sharp eyes scanned the horizon, but all he found was emptiness, the same emptiness that had gnawed at him since Xisuma left. He told himself it was the void’s pull that ached in his chest, but he knew better.

Xisuma had promised he would return before the new moon, and the sky had already begun to darken with its absence. Etho tried not to think about how treacherous the void could be—how it devoured the unwary and swallowed even the strongest of ships whole. Xisuma was skilled, a captain who tamed the abyss, but even he wasn’t invincible.

Etho’s breath hitched as his eyes darted to the horizon again, and then he saw it—a faint glimmer, a light cutting through the dark waves. His heart leapt, the ache in his chest replaced by something warmer, fiercer.

The light grew closer, revealing the sleek silhouette of Xisuma’s ship. Its hull glistened with the faint reflections of the stars above, and the sails caught currents Etho couldn’t see, pulling it closer with haunting grace.

Etho’s legs moved before his mind caught up, carrying him to the shoreline as fast as they could. By the time the ship docked, his mask was damp from the mist of the void and the tears he refused to wipe away.

Xisuma stepped off the gangplank, his armor catching the faint starlight. The void’s energy still clung to him, a dark aura that made his presence larger than life. But Etho didn’t care. He closed the distance between them in three long strides and threw his arms around Xisuma, burying his face against his chest.

“You’re late,” Etho muttered, voice muffled but thick with emotion.

Xisuma chuckled, the sound low and familiar. “The void doesn’t keep time, love. But I came back, didn’t I?”

Etho pulled back just enough to look up at him, his mask hiding most of his face but not the softness in his eyes. “Don’t make me wait so long next time.”

Xisuma smiled, his hand rising to cup Etho’s cheek. “I’ll try. But you know, the void always calls. And I’ll always come home to you.”

The waves lapped at the shore as the void seemed to settle around them, the stars above flickering with quiet approval. Etho closed his eyes and let himself believe it, if only for tonight.

Glancing down at the red head, she smiled. "I've seen giant crabs and monsters that would give anyone nightmares. Got to say, this is my first time speaking with a mermaid."

Just like your Paris, on my island it is also exquisite and breathtaking. We live in Fales. No walls, and we have thatched roofs." Though, she wouldn't change anything of this scenery. It was lovely to wake up to this every morning.

What type of dancing. "It's a traditional kind of dance my people do. A hula, normally we dance when we have a celebration. Or there is me, who enjoys dancing down near the water." A tilt of her head. "What is a tambourine? Is that a instrument you use to dance with? As for a melody. Not sure how much use a conch shell will be."

“Oh, Paris is exquisite and breathtaking. It’s located in France and has the most magnificent architecture.” Her emerald eyes sparkled while she talked about her home. “The scenery is vastly different than this island.”

“Oh you are? That makes me wonder what type of dancing you do.” Esmeralda thought about her offer and immediately accepted it with a nod. “You have a deal. But could you assist me with a tambourine or a melody? My tambourine is in the caravan.”

after texting renjun and letting him know you were about to walk in, you take a second to breathe. you open the door after mentally preparing yourself for any confrontation and- wow he's cute.

seeing you walk in, renjun scrambles up to pull your chair out, almost tripping over himself.

"hi" his voice cracks, he tucks his hair behind his ear.

"hi" you say back as you take a seat. wow, he’s REALLY cute.

"i pulled up my portfolio so you could see what my work looks like" he clears his throat, opening his laptop, "i kinda already looked through your work when i saw you posted mark, you're really talented" a light blush spreads across his face.

you hum in acknowledgment, not hiding the prideful smile that spreads across your face. renjun spins his laptop around, and to say you're impressed would be an understatement.

"renjun...you are insane" you somehow manage to get out, even with your jaw gaping.

"did i do something? i'm sorry i didn't mean to offend you i-"

"no no! i mean just like wow...i'm not even mad you were being a dick before, i would be too if i had this kinda skill" you tell him honestly.

a sheepish smile makes its way onto renjun's face, "thank you"

"of course, i mean it." you say before taking a sip of the drink renjun ordered for you.

“okay so, i’ve been thinking about this all night” you blurt out before taking a bite of your cinnamon roll.

“since you appreciate earth’s natural beauty and i appreciate the people who make my life on earth beautiful,” you take a sip of your drink.

“and stay with me here now” you stare right into his soul as he nods rapidly.

“it just never seemed like my kinda thing” you stare at him. rethinking life, love, happiness. how can one go without watching moana? is he happy with his life? there’s no way. he couldn't be. he hasn't seen moana. probably why he acted like an ass.

“do you have plans later?” you ask.

“no, why?” he asks back.

“get your stuff we are going to your dorm and watching moana now.” you declare, already getting your stuff together.

“wait i haven’t cleaned” he says, trying to catch up with you, “i don't care and neither does moana, speed it up.”

you leave the cafe with a mission and renjun leaves beyond bewildered.
