MOVIES WITH MEN IN UNDERWEAR (This is outdated- website shutdown early 2000’s)
“B”
Bachelor Flat (1961) Terry Thomas romps through most of this movie in checked patterned full-cut boxer shorts, garters and a British umbrella.
Bachelor Party (1984) Customer trying on pants in poorly constructed fitting room doesn’t realize his jockeys are in view of the whole store. Near beginning of the film.
Back in Action (1994) Muscled action hero Billy Blanks has a fight scene in his white boxer briefs.

Back to the Future Part III (1990) Michael J. Fox in LONGJOHNS. Flap down on one side shows a quick peek of buttcheek as well.
Backdraft (1991) Jason Gedrick (guy from Murder One) in boxers - Baldwin is also in boxers.
Bad Boyz in Boxers This entire movie devoted to boxer shorts. It is distributed by the Latino Fan Club under Salsa Productions label. It is mostly hunky, uncut Latin guys wearing boxer shorts and jerking off to orgasm. One of the scenes involves one guy giving blow jobs to two others; the rest are solo. All the guys wear boxers; most are uncut. The boxers are many different varieties and patterns. It’s a GREAT movie!
Bait (2000) Action/comedy. Jamie Foxx in his underwear.
Bang (1995) A young woman is nearly raped by a LAPD motorcycle officer, but, at the crucial moment, she succeeds in grabbing his gun. At gunpoint, she forces the cop to strip down to his skivvies, ties him up to a post and then leaves the scene, on his bike and dressed in his uniform! And that's not the last you hear of the luckless fuzz. Reportedly, there a number of subsequent scenes where you see him, all tied up in his undies.
Bang the Drum Slowly (1973) Robert DeNiro, in jock in coach’s office.
Bang! Bang! You're Dead! (1966) Tony Randall spends the night with a woman. In the morning, there's a tussle for a gun, and his blanket falls off, leaving him in his boxer shorts.

Beastmaster 1 or 2 Marc Singer ... always in his leather loincloth?
Bedtime Story (1964) Marlon Brando strips down to his boxer shorts, and finds himself in an embarrassing moment.
Beefcake (1999) Cheerful documentary about the history of 'muscle' magazines from the 1950s, featuring lots of posing pouches and nudes.
Being John Malkovich (1999) Surreal comedy. Near the end, Malkovich takes off his pants, showing his pink paisley boxer shorts.
Being There (1979) A slow-witted Peter Sellers in full-cut boxer shorts.
Belly (1998) Crime drama. When an argument breaks out among a gang, they attack one guy and force him to strip. He takes off his jacket, shirt and undershirt, pulls his pants and underwear down to his ankles, and hobbles across the room to sit on the couch. Clear but discreet nude shot, but no good view of the underwear.
Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, The (1982) Locker scene after football game (studs in jockstraps in locker room). And don’t forget the scene with all the cowboys running around in their underwear after the reporters come. MEOW!
Best Man, The (1999/I) Drama. Handsome young guy in his white boxers is talking on the phone, when he suddenly realises a woman is watching him. She comments, "Nice boxers! I thought you were strictly a briefs man".
Best Men (1997) Dean Cain in his black bikini briefs in a very short scene.
Bewegte Mann, Der (Maybe, Maybe Not) (Most Desired Man) (1994) Comedy. The desired man of the title comes back from a party to his gay friend’s flat, gets his trousers half off and falls asleep like that on the sofa in his gray boxer briefs.
Better Off Dead... (1985) John Cusack. Wearing red plaid boxers at beginning of movie.
Beyond the Mat (1999) Documentary. Terry Funk, a 53-year-old former WWF star, getting out of bed in his underwear.
Bhaji on the Beach (1993) Near the end of the movie three guys do a strip routine for a women only audience: down to black thongs.
Big (1988) Tom Hanks in Underoos at the beginning.
Big Easy, The (1987) Dennis Quaid getting dressed, goes from nothing to black bikini briefs. Fairly short scene.
Billy's Hollywood Screen Kiss (1998) Gay-themed romantic comedy. It has Brad Rowe in it (Brad Pitt lookalike). Scence where he is modeling underwear and is trying to squeeze into a black pair - another guy opens the door to where he is changing and catches him showing his butt. Later at the end there is a picture shown of Brad modeling white cotton briefs.
Biloxi Blues (1988) Matthew Broderick, et al - in army barracks - wearing army issue boxers - discussing what they want to do on their last three days on earth.
Bird (1988) Jazz biopic. Gloomy opening scene of marital argument and attempted suicide begins with Charlie "Bird" Parker (Forest Whitaker) coming home drunk and slowly stripping to white singlet and striped boxers.
Bird on a Wire (1990) Mel Gibson with Goldie Hawn. Long scene with Mel in bed or running around in briefs.
Birdcage, The (1996) Lots of scenes of houseboy in tight 501 cutoffs. One point he is cleaning the pool and he is wearing a thong.

Bliss (1997) Drama/romance. Long scene midway through film with Craig Sheffer in a pair of blue boxers and Terrence Stamp in a pair of shorts (apparently not underwear, though). Stamp plays a sex expert who is attmepting to help Sheffer through marital difficulties with his wife. Both characters are straight, but there is an undeniable homosexual undercurrent in this scene.
Blood Ties (1991) (TV) One of the London twins (Jeremy or Jason) getting out of bed in black tee shirt, white jockeys, another scene in white jockeys, a scene with male vampires in underwear.
Bloodbrothers (1978) Tony Lo Bianco - white A-shirt, white briefs; Richard Gere - white briefs.
Bloodsport (1988) Jean Claude Van Damme getting into some nice maroon bikini briefs.
Blown Away (1994) Action thriller. Bomb squad officer Forest Whitaker, relaxing in his underwear at home, finds himself trapped by a booby-trap bomb while colleagues work to disarm it. I think he was wearing a black T-shirt and pale blue boxers. Reminiscent of Danny Glover's pants-down-on-the-john predicament in Lethal Weapon 2 (1989) but not played for laughs.
Blue Collar (1978) Drama. Two scenes with Harvey Keitel - both in white jockey shorts, one with A-shirt too.
Blue Lagoon, The (1980) Christopher Atkins in loincloth for entire movie (several nude scenes - the first by a male in a mainstream movie).

Bounce (2000) Ben Affleck in his boxers, in bed with a woman.
Bowfinger (1999) Comedy. Four actors auditioning as Eddie Murphy body doubles are seen from behind, lined up with their pants down, in various underwear - white, patterned and coloured briefs, and plaid boxers.

Boys and Girls (2000) Comedy/romance. Hunter (Jason Biggs) in his boxers after an implied sex scene, and during the closing credits, modeling some cheetah print boxers.
Boys in Company C, The (1978) AN ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC SCENE has David Morse, Andrew Stevens and other hot actors who are new recruits they are all wearing white T-shirts and white briefs. A MUST SEE.
Boys Next Door, The (1986) (Big Shots) Exploitation flick, directed by Penelope Spheeris and starring Maxwell Caulfield and Charlie Sheen as teenage psychos. In one scene, they're in a motel room, watching TV in their underwear and white socks.
Boys of Cellblock Q, The (1992) Out & About Productions, comedy, shot on video. Georgeous hunks in white briefs in much of the movie. Very hot.

Brewster's Millions (1985) Comedy. Creditors arrive to repossess everything Richard Pryor has - including the clothes he's wearing. He takes his pants off, revealing his pale blue monogrammed boxer shorts.
Bride of Chucky (1998) Comedy/horror. "Tiffany handcuffs a friend -- who's down to his black underwear -- to her bed."
Brief Exchange, HIS-Video, XXX Tanner Reeves, and others, the ‘plot’ is a rather shallow one, one of the guys is collecting and showing underwear and swimwear, which gives rise to a couple of really hot scenes. The amazing thing with this video is that underwear always plays an important part in these heavy sexual episodes.
Broadway Melody, The (1929) Charles King, in full-cut polka dot boxer shorts, has a heated confrontation with Bessie Love and Anita Page in this early Academy Award winner.
Brothers McMullen, The (1995) Comedy. Ed Burns in white tee shirt and full cut patterned boxers; his brother in white athletic undershirt and full cut patterned boxers as well.
Brown's Requiem (1998) Thriller. At the very start of the movie, a black guy in white boxer shorts and undershirt runs out to a parking garage to try and stop his car being taken. Quickly beaten in a fight, there's a very clear shot of him on the ground, and his underwear looks like it might have been altered with scissors. Also, lead character Fritz Brown (Michael Rooker) in a scene near the end, emerging from the ocean in his white briefs and socks.
Buck Privates (1941) Abbott and Costello and a group of other young men are drafted - and line up for their army physical exam in boxers of all types.
Bull Durham (1988) Kevin Costner is ironing his pants, wearing white trim-cut boxers with a side slit, when in barges Susan Sarandon for a confrontation. Also, Tim Robbins in white briefs and blue and white striped bikinis.
Bulldog Breed, The (1960) Comedy. Norman Wisdom for some reason running around a battleship in his underwear, pushing everyone overboard.
Bulldog Drummond in Africa (1938) John Howard starred as Bulldog Drummond, British Detective, in a number of serialized shorts. Humor often played a part. Never more so than when his bride to be took all the trousers out of his estate to assure he'd not be distracted into taking another case. Bulldog Drummond in Africa opens with Howard stuck at home in his suit jacket, shirt and tie, boxers, gartered socks and shoes. His butler (in long drawers) is also without pants, as is the best friend Bulldog calls on the phone. (This is the excellent silent film star Reginald Denny, who lost his pants in such silents as "Skinner's Dress Suit" among others).
Bullets Over Broadway (1994) Comedy. Middle-aged stage actor (Jim Broadbent) has an interrupted tryst with the leading lady and has to flee down the fire escape in his voluminous boxer shorts. On the street, he runs into theatergoers who engage him in a discussion of the play.
Buona Sera, Mrs. Campbell (1968) Comedy. Gina Lollobrigida's boyfriend jumps out of bed in his white boxers.
Buster and Billy ?
Bustin' Loose (1981) Comedy/drama. Richard Pryor, beaten at strip poker by some kids, ends up a little embarrassed in his long, red underwear. Later, awakened in the middle of the night, he gets out of bed in a white V-neck T-shirt and high-cut red briefs, and walks about a little dazed for a bit.
Butterflies Are Free (1972) Edward Albert in trim-cut boxers.

Pairing: Adrian Raines x MC (Amy Stevenson)
Summary: What would have happened if Adrian and Amy had meet before the interview?
Words: 727
Warning: none
Prompt: #2 of this list!
Adrian Raines x mc tag list: @avamarieland @alesana45 @itscassandraleig-blog @mattrodriguezmylife @bigmemesplz @perriewinklenerdie @x-kyne-x @livingpurpose @adriansbiss @marycarrillo21

Amy was sitting at a small table near the counter, her eyes fixed on the screen of her phone, reading an article with a steaming cup in front of her. She had an interview with the VP of Raines Corp but her anxiety had made her get there too early, almost an hour early, so she headed to a coffee shop on the same block, a big luxurious place with prices she couldn't afford and coffee so rich and delicious like nothing she had tasted before. And probably wouldn't again. She had her resume in a folder on the table, that she peek at now and then checking for some phrases and info she had put on it, along with her purse, phone and the totally-overpriced- but- completely-worth-it cup of coffee. She had studied everything about the company, when it started, what vision and mission were, countries they were operating in, she had read every article, note and interview about them and their CEO, Adrian Raines. He seemed like an interesting person, smart too, but for some strange reason, she couldn't find a picture of him or anything relevant outside of his work achievements, which was okay but still weird, he was rich and an important figure of NY economic life, the kind of man you normally see in all the gossip magazine or all over the news.
The front door opened and a tall, suited man rushed inside the shop, heading to the back part, the more quiet and dark side of it, he sat down and took his ringing phone from his pocket and answered it. She couldn't hear what he was saying, but she noticed the seriousness of his attitude and refined manners.
The waitress placed a cup in front of him before he asked for it, seductively smiling at him and, honestly, Amy couldn't blame her. He was handsome, with a strong and intriguing presence, his obviously expensive and tailored suit fitting him perfectly, barely showing his muscles but enough to let the imagination fly. He did a little 'thank you' gesture with his head and suddenly directed his gaze towards her, catching her staring at him before she could look away. Her cheeks flushed immediately as the blue of his eyes stared directly to the brown of hers with an intensity she hadn't seen before, she felt an energy going through her body, a weird sensation she had never felt, like something telling her it was important to meet this man. She looked again at her phone, her face still feeling hot and his eyes fixed on her a few moments more. She tried to concentrate on her interview, she really needed this job, it was her last chance to stay in NY, but instead of that, her eyes returned to the blue-eyed man.
"He's so pretty. I want to cry." Amy mumbled to herself. The lips of the stranger rose up in a playful smile and he looked at her from the corner of his eyes. He...He couldn't hear her, right? They weren't close enough and she had said it carefully low. However, she knew that that smile was for her.
She checked the clock on the wall, it was time to head to Raines office if she didn't want to be late so she paid for her coffee, grabbed her things and spied on the man's table once more but he had disappeared.
The interview started okay, kinda. Nicole, the VP, obviously wasn't impressed by her but she was still asking her questions so that was a good sign. The back door of the conference room opened and Amy's jaw dropped as Nicole greeted the man in front of them.
"Adrian, I didn't expect to see you here."
"I had a few moments to spare, is this the candidate?" He asked, checking his phone for a moment.
"This is Amy Stevenson" She said handing him her resume. Nicole turned to Amy narrowing her eyes with annoyance at her surprised face. "Adrian Raines, our CEO." Adrian directed his eyes towards hers, blue and intense like in the coffee shop and a tiny smile curled the corners of his mouth.
"I'll take over from here, Nicole." And he sat in front of her, starting a tale about a man and a genie, ignoring how this interview would change their lives forever.

Predator 4 - Arnold Schwarzenegger interested in participating in the new sequel
d and embroiled in an adventure no man has ever done before. The soles of my ballerina shoes are pretty worn out. Welcome to / r / rocketbeans! This is the subreddit around the RocketBeans and their YouTube content. Then hit this post here and please only in this post. On Twitter, you (I) unfortunately easily lose track of such things. In the 2008 presidential campaign, Schwarzenegger supported Republican John McCain. In any case, Ali apparently helped Schwarzenegger's words. Schwarzenegger even inquired about Ali the next day - who had since posted that he had been doing sports - and said he was proud of him. Kevin Ware Inspires Twitter After Terrible March Madness Injury
Around 2004, when he denounced "girlish men" in a political debate. Of course, his affair with his former housekeeper, with whom he cheated on his wife Maria Shriver (62) at the time, also made headlines. An illegitimate child arose from the affair. And what's next with Schwarzenegger?
Tumblr media
Schwarzenegger was not only the most photographed model in Weider's magazine Muscle & Fitness and most frequently featured on the front page, but was also increasingly featured in social magazines and even political and news magazines such as Spiegel or Time magazine. Schwarzenegger was shown more and more in a pinstripe suit and contributed to the cultivation of the self-image that physical exercise should be part of life. Sporty fitness or body shaping are terms that became socially acceptable in the 1980s. Schwarzenegger's popularity contributed in part to the fact that gyms were able to lose their somewhat shady image until the 1960s. At 19.
Beginnings of his political career [edit
He reduced the sentence for Sara Kruzan, who attacked and killed her former pimp in 1994 at the age of 16. For this she was given a life sentence without the possibility of ever being released. Schwarzenegger described the sentence as excessive and reduced it. Prior to his career as California governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger was one of the most successful bodybuilders ever. Meanwhile, the 67-year-old muscle man prefers to pass on his wisdom to the young generation. Most recently, he encouraged a 19-year-old. Others, such as the former Mayor of Los Angeles Richard Riordan, who had given up his own application in favor of Schwarzenegger, supported the political career changer. In general, Schwarzenegger (or his acting career) came to the fore instead of the planned politics, and Schwarzenegger only participated in one debate in the election campaign. In the election on the 7th

True Lies: actor, director, production
In the stadium itself there is certainly no smoking ban, so a stadium is rather open air. "Football is our core business," says Peter Kerspe, the managing director of the stadium operating company.
Packaging and shipping
Maybe you take one or the other wisdom to heart. The delivery date - opens in a new window or tab refers to an incoming payment (e.g. via PayPal) on the day of purchase and is based on the processing time specified by the seller and the shipping time specified by the shipping service provider. In the event of later receipt of payment us the delivery date will be shifted accordingly. The actual shipping time may vary in individual cases, especially at peak times. because on the one hand we put our bulky fixed-term deposit account into the AA and on the other hand the FCB brand grew faster than we could have imagined 5 years ago. the audi million also lead to a significant relief. The finished design of the museum can be found in the AA in the new Bayern magazine.

In 1994 he worked again with James Cameron in the ludicrous action comedy "True Lies" and watched Jamie Lee Curtis doing one of the most iconic striptease acts in film history. Opening should be in 2011/2012. I really hope that there will be an absolute ban on smoking in the AA soon. It is a dream to watch a football game on the island, for example, without being constantly fogged up. Well, you can't smoke in the fan club for a long time, and before the fan club, no idea, it's actually open air. From 2003 to 2011 "Arnie" even switched to politics as the governor of California. Arnold Schwarzenegger is probably one of the most dazzling characters on the bodybuilding scene, a status that the Austrian-born artist owes not only to his muscles or his presence on the big screen. On the contrary, Arnie has also given the fitness world numerous witty quotes, of which we would like to list the most important ones below. This function is currently not available. Please try again later. "We already had laser shows and big bands here," reports one employee. However, large concerts may not be held here - this is forbidden by the lease agreement with the city of Munich in order not to compete with the city's own trade fair and Olympic Park companies. The bodybuilder and multiple Mister Universe is one of the most successful action actors and one of the superstars of US cinema. However, the company posts a quarter of its annual income of around 50 million euros outside of the seasons. And so these activities also finance the running costs that the building devours. The arena alone offers 120 workdays on weekdays, 1,400 on match days. The energy requirement amounts to around three million euros a year. FC Bayern München AG, as the sole shareholder of the Allianz Arena, thanks Mr. Peter Kerspe for his tireless efforts in the past few years, his creativity and his willingness to be available to the stadium company as chairman of the management for longer than originally agreed.

History of People with Eating Disorders
I was going on a wikipedia deep dive (as you do) and I started reading about the history of anorexia and I thought it was quite interesting the different people afflicted with it and how they shaped societies perceptions. Warning!!! This could be triggering of course!!! I’m definitely not condoning it (quite the opposite, please take care of yourself!!!) But for interests sake and maybe it might help someone, I don’t know.
Saint Catherine of Siena (1347-1380)
Catherine was one of the two patron saints of Italy and one of the six patron saints of Europe. She was a little kooky (sorry to anyone who holds those beliefs) as she believed that she was married to Jesus and had an invisible wedding ring. She first began fasting in defiance when her mother tried to have her marry her sister’s widower. Her sister had also fasted in order to get her husband to have better manners, I don’t know how that was supposed to work. She lived with her family and did not want their food, saying that she had a table laid for her in heaven with her real” family. When she became a tertiary she practiced strict abstinence, and concerned her associates with her lack of eating. This is a practice know as anorexia mirabilis, religious anorexia, as opposed to anorexia nervosa. She died at the age of 33 after having a massive stroke, most likely due to malnutrition.
Catherine of Aragon (1485-1536)
THIS Catherine was the Queen of England until she was famously by King Henry VIII causing the split between the protestant and Catholic church. After she was divorced, she confined herself to religion and also suffered from anorexia mirabilis from severe fasting. Scientists speculate she died from cancer.
Mary, Queen of Scotts (1542-1587)
This Scottish queen had a mysterious illness temporarily that caused dizziness, fainting, convulsions, and vomiting. This illness was undiagnosed but is thought in modern times to have possibly been anorexia. She recovered and was eventually executed for trying to assassinate queen Elizabeth.
Renee Vivien (1877-1909)

She began dieting in high school and was at a healthy weight. When seeing an unflattering photo of herself taken at a concert, she hired a personal trainer and began to have a more specific diet. The personal trainer’s suggestion caused her to gain muscle which made her appear heavier, so she fired him and began to restrict her eating. She contacted Cherry Boone about her illness who suggested she see her doctor. She was treated by a psychiatrist but continued to use thyroid pills to increase her metabolism and laxatives so her condition worsened. She was finally admitted to a hospital where they put her on intravenous nutrition, which was a success, but the rapid weight gain caused damage to her already weak heart. She seemed to be improving tremendously after the hospital, but ultimately collapsed at home and died at the hospital from a weak heart. Her death brought attention to the disease, and her family created a memorial foundation in her honor.

Art in Early Childhood: Curriculum Connections
By Jill Englebright Fox, Ph.D., and Stacey Berry, M.Ed.
Art has traditionally been an important part of early childhood programs. Friedrich Froebel, the father of kindergarten, believed that young children should be involved in both making their own art and enjoying the art of others. To Froebel, art activities were important, not because they allowed teachers to recognize children with unusual abilities, but because they encouraged each child's "full and all-sided development" (Froebel, 1826). More than a century later, early childhood teachers are still concerned with the "all-sided" development of each child. Our curriculum includes activities that will help children develop their cognitive, social, and motor abilities. As Froebel recognized, making art and enjoying the art of other people and cultures are very important to the development of the whole child. The purpose of this article is to discuss the importance of art in young children's learning and development and to describe elements of an art program within a developmentally appropriate early childhood curriculum.
Art and Socio-Emotional Development
Young children feel a sense of emotional satisfaction when they are involved in making art, whether they are modeling with clay, drawing with crayons, or making a collage from recycled scraps. This satisfaction comes from the control children have over the materials they use and the autonomy they have in the decisions they make (Schirrmacher, 1998; Seefeldt, 1993). Deciding what they will make and what materials they will use may be the first opportunity children have to make independent choices and decisions.
Making art also builds children's self-esteem by giving them opportunities to express what they are thinking and feeling (Klein, 1991; Sautter, 1994). Sautter (1994) stated that when children participate in art activities with classmates, the feedback they give to each other builds self-esteem by helping them learn to accept criticism and praise from others. Small group art activities also help children practice important social skills like taking turns, sharing, and negotiating for materials.
Art and Cognitive Development
For very young children, making art is a sensory exploration activity. They enjoy the feeling of a crayon moving across paper and seeing a blob of colored paint grow larger. Kamii and DeVries (1993) suggested that exploring materials is very important because it is through exploration that children build a knowledge of the objects in the world around them.
Activities centering around making art also require children to make decisions and conduct self-evaluations. Klein (1991) described four decisions that child artists make. First, they decide what they will portray in their art—a person, a tree, a dragon. Second, they choose the media they will use, the arrangement of objects in their work, and the perspective viewers will take. Children decide next how quickly or how slowly they will finish their project, and finally, how they will evaluate their creation. Most often, children evaluate their artwork by thinking about what they like and what other people tell them is pleasing (Feeney & Moravcik, 1987).
As children grow and develop, their art-making activities move beyond exploring with their senses and begin to involve the use of symbols. Children begin to represent real objects, events, and feelings in their artwork. Drawing, in particular, becomes an activity that allows them to symbolize what they know and feel. It is a needed outlet for children whose vocabulary, written or verbal, may be limited (de la Roche, 1996). This early use of symbols in artwork is very important because it provides a foundation for children's later use of words to symbolize objects and actions in formal writing.
Art and Motor Development
While making art, young children develop control of large and small muscle groups (Koster, 1997). The large arm movements required for painting or drawing at an easel or on large paper on the floor build coordination and strength. The smaller movements of fingers, hands, and wrists required to cut with scissors, model clay, or draw or paint on smaller surfaces develop fine motor dexterity and control. With repeated opportunities for practice, young children gain confidence in their use of tools for making art and later for writing.
Making art also helps children develop eye-hand coordination (Koster, 1997). As children decide how to make parts fit together into a whole, where to place objects, and what details to include, they learn to coordinate what they see with the movements of their hands and fingers. This eye-hand coordination is essential for many activities, including forming letters and spacing words in formal writing.
Art Experiences in Classrooms for Young Children
Although art activities help children develop in many areas, teachers must recognize that art also has value in and of itself. Fostering the development of children's aesthetic sense and engaging children in creative experiences should be the objectives of an early childhood art program.
Activities that involve children in both making and enjoying art are essential if programs are to meet the needs of the whole child. The challenge for early childhood teachers is to provide these activities in an art program that is developmentally appropriate and that can be integrated throughout the curriculum. Such a program should include:
using reproductions to expose children to masterpiece art
taking field trips to local museums to provide opportunities for art appreciation
providing access to a classroom art center in which children choose their own topics and media
displaying children's artwork in a classroom gallery
involving families in the art program.
To integrate an art program into a developmentally appropriate curriculum, adults must recognize that children express their ideas through art, just as they do in writing. Creative teachers find ways to support children's learning across the curriculum through activities in which children make art and enjoy the art of others. The following elements form the basis of an art program to be integrated into a developmentally appropriate curriculum for young children.
Using Masterpiece Reproductions
Posters and smaller reproductions of masterpiece art can be purchased at most art museums or through teacher supply catalogs. Less expensive reproductions can be obtained from calendars, stationery, magazines, and newspapers. Teachers can use these reproductions in many ways to support children's learning throughout the classroom and curriculum.
Reproductions may be used on signs to designate learning centers or label parts of the classroom. For example, Jacob Lawrence's Builders #1might be displayed in the woodworking center, or Jean Simeon Chardin's Soap Bubbles could be hung over the water table. Reproductions could be used to indicate gender on the restroom door or where children line up to go outside. Reproductions could also be used on bulletin boards to accompany displays related to thematic units. The work of Piet Mondrian might be used to illustrate a focus on primary colors or shapes, that of Claude Monet might accompany a unit on spring, while the works of Maurice Utrillo might go with a study of communities. Masterpiece art would not, in either learning centers or group discussions, replace the use of real objects or photographs as visual aids, but would provide children with another way of seeing and thinking about the concepts they are learning. Reproductions help children to make the connection "between reality and art—someone's interpretation of reality" (Dighe, Calomiris, & Van Zutphen, 1998, p. 5).
Museum Field Trips
Taking young children to an art museum can be a challenging experience for any adult. Museums are designed for grown-ups who engage in thoughtful reflection, not for active children who want to point and exclaim. With a little preparation, however, a museum field trip can be an enjoyable experience for all.
Many museums schedule special times for children's tours and family visits. During these times, the museum staff and other patrons expect children to visit, and special tours and support personnel will be available. If the children will not be participating in a tour planned specifically for them, it is important that the teacher select a few key items on which to focus during the visit. Artwork done by artists featured in the classroom or portraying objects related to thematic units will be of interest to the children. They will have a context for thinking about and discussing what they see. Because the attention span of young children is short, museum field trips should not be lengthy. Thirty minutes is probably long enough for children to view the pieces pre-selected by the teacher without getting tired or frustrated in the museum setting. Other exhibits can be saved for future field trips.
Classroom Art Center
The art center should provide opportunities for child-centered activities. Although teachers might suggest themes, too much direction or assistance interferes with the creative process. Adult models for children to follow are also frustrating because most children do not have the fine motor and visual perceptual skills to replicate adult efforts. Instead, teachers can encourage children to design and complete their own projects by recognizing that the same themes may be repeated many times as children explore ideas and practice skills.
Open-ended materials such as paint, crayons, markers, scissors, glue, clay, and assorted paper support child-centered activities. Although having too many choices can be overwhelming for young children, making a selection from two or three options at a time is an excellent way for children to practice decision-making. Lowenfeld and Brittain (1975) also "cautioned" teachers not to change materials or introduce new materials into the center too often. Children need time to practice and develop skills with materials if they are to use them to express their ideas and feelings.
Finally, it should be noted that the creative process takes time. Although some children will complete their artwork within a short time, others will need large blocks of time to design and make their projects. The design of the art center and the class schedule should encourage children to return to a project and work until they decide it is completed (Edwards & Nabors, 1993).
Displaying Children's Art in a Classroom Gallery
A classroom gallery exhibiting children's art highlights the work for the children themselves and for classroom visitors. A large bulletin board or wall space provides a backdrop for the gallery. Children should take the responsibility for mounting their work and selecting its placement in the gallery. Labels, including a title for the work, name of the artist, medium, and year of creation, can be dictated and will provide a meaningful experience with print. Children can also serve as curators and lecturers, giving tours of the gallery to classroom visitors.
Involving Families in the Art Program
Keeping families involved in the life of the classroom is an important responsibility for early childhood teachers. Sharing with families the role of art in the curriculum and the activities in which their children are participating will encourage their support of the program and of their children's learning. Family involvement can be encouraged in several ways. Inviting families to participate in museum field trips and classroom art activities provides the opportunity for shared experiences and discussion between children and their parents.
Teachers may also suggest at-home art projects for children and parents to participate in together. These projects should always be optional and teachers should provide any special materials that might be needed in a packet which includes explanations and directions for the project. Brand (1996) suggested linking art projects with book themes as a way of encouraging parents with differing skill levels to feel comfortable in working with their children at home. For example, after reading Lucy's Picture(1995) by Nicola Moon, children and parents might work together to create a collage depicting activities they would like to participate in together from materials found at home and/or supplied by the teacher.
"Artists' knapsacks" for children's use at home are another way to involve families in classroom art activities. Four to five knapsacks, each featuring one medium such as paint and paper or modeling clay, can be available for children to check out and share with their families. Although the general purpose of the knapsacks should be shared with parents, specific directions for each knapsack need not be provided. The goal of the knapsacks is to encourage the same creative use of materials at home as in the classroom.
Conclusion
Through the art activities described in this article, young children will develop abilities and skills that have application in many other areas of the curriculum. Most importantly, however, children will also develop an appreciation for the art of other people and cultures, and the confidence to express their own thoughts and feelings through art. Far from creating individual prodigies, this integration of making and enjoying art in the early childhood classroom will result in the "all-sided development" of the children participating.

1994 Interview All About Garak & Andrew Robinson
I’ve seen this great interview posted a bunch of times online, but it’s alway seems to be as graphic scans, which I have a hard time reading, so when I actually got my hands on DS9 magazine Vol. 9, 1994, I was psyched. I could read it AND I could scan it! So here it is, with all the text, plus photos. I’ll be posting the photos all separately afterward, including a few that don’t fit. Enjoy!
I love Garak and Andy so much. Also, I love that this interview is all after Season 2 (and I believe before Season 3 aired), so you have Robinson saying things like “I wish I’d get to do more plots with Rene and Avery!” and “It’s going to really interesting when Garak’s secrets come out!” He he. It’s really zero surprise he wound up writing a book. Or that the book would be well written -- he uses great words in the interview, just popping in stuff like “apotheosis.”

Tumblr media
According to his former superior in the Obsidian Order, Garak has a "rare talent for obfuscation." The same, fortunately, cannot be said of the man who plays him, Andrew Robinson. Given the chance, he willingly expounds upon the delights of playing this charming, yet devious, Cardassian.
"This role has been quite surprising and wonderful," Robinson says. "The way the character is progressing is a delight for me. When I auditioned and got the part, I had no idea that it was going to be a recurring character. They've been writing really interesting things for Garak; each time that he appears, there's something more to play."
What first attracted him to the role was "the mystery about the character. At the same time, there was also this wonderfully refined and urbane intelligence about Garak. Not only did he have a secret, but his secrets were very deep and potentially very interesting. I don't know where it's going from here, but I look forward to the day --- if the day ever does come -- when the truth about Garak emerges. I have a feeling that the secrets he has are going to be a great deal of fun to play."
Because he didn't receive any back ground from the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine writers or producers, "I just created my own, so I had something to work from," says Robinson. "I went for the approach of something that was reptilian, someone with cold blood, who would have that same deliberate, measured style. In terms of mystery, I played 'I've got a secret.' The writers and producers have been taking what I'm doing and building from that, as well as whatever they have in mind for Garak, which really is the best. Very few shows do this. Very few."
Tumblr media
Not surprisingly, Robinson's least favorite aspect of this role is enduring the makeup. "That's the worst part of it. Garak is a three-and-a-half hour makeup job. Sometimes I'll have a 2 or 3 a.m. call! There are seven prosthetic appliances that they put on, including the neck. It teaches you a lot of patience," he admits. "Once I'm in it -- and these are long days I put in on the set, 14 to 16-hour days sometimes --- I just have to 'Zen' out. Otherwise, if I start getting cranky, then I'm done; I can't act or do anything. I really have to move into an almost beatific state. I have lost weight, though; that's one good thing!" he adds, laughing, before relating a more serious makeup-related tale.
"When the earthquake hit in January, it was 4:30 a.m. in Los Angeles, and I was already in the makeup chair, along with Armin Shimerman [Quark] and a couple other actors. It was pretty bizarre: this earthquake hits, all the power goes out, and all these aliens in varying stages of makeup are milling about in the darkness! People like Armin and Ed Wiley, who was playing this Cardassian, couldn't get through on the phone to their families, so they just jumped into their cars -- Armin in his Quark makeup and Ed with his Cardassian makeup on -- and drove through the pre-dawn streets of Los Angeles. I can only imagine what the other motorists saw -- I think that would be more bracing than a cup of coffee!"
Robinson made his Deep Space Nine debut in the series' second-to-air episode, "Past Prologue." There, "plain and simple Garak" made first contact with Dr. Bashir (who immediately suspected him of being a Cardassian spy) and helped foil a fanatical Bajoran terrorist's plot. Interacting with the Klingon sisters Lursa (Barbara March) and B'Etor (Gwynyth Walsh) proved to be some of Robinson's favorite moments. "That was just a gas!" he exclaims. "We had a great time doing those scenes; I hope we can do that again."
Tumblr media
Garak next appeared in "Cardassians," where he was instrumental in uncovering a scandal concerning the abandonment of Cardassian orphans on Bajor after the war. "The best thing about that was the scene where he and Bashir go to Bajor and run into the orphans. We learned a little more about their culture, that children without parents have no status in Cardassian society, so they just abandoned them. The fact that Garak was faced with this, and realized that there is something very basically wrong about it, was great."
Tumblr media
Although both Bashir and viewers alike still wonder which side (if any) Garak owes his allegiances to, Robinson thinks that "Garak's a good guy," and cites the second season episode "Profit & Loss" as "the turning point. When I got that script, I thought, 'Oh, I guess this is the end of Garak,' as I was reading. Then, I got to the end and he decides, no, he's not going to kill Professor Lang and her student dissidents, nor turn them in. He has the change of heart and lets them go. He was faced with that moral dilemma, and for most Cardassians, there would have been no dilemma; they would have just done what they were expected to do." The actor hastens to add, however, "That's not to say that the man doesn't have an... ambiguous past. He's very complicated, very ambiguous, and there's no doubt that there are things in his past that aren't very nice. He is, after all, Cardassian!"
Tumblr media
One of Robinson's greatest pleasures on Deep Space Nine, he says, has been working with Siddig El Fadil, who plays Dr. Bashir. "Siddig and I get along so well, and we have become very good friends from this show. The chemistry works out beautifully, where you have this older, reptilian mystery man who isn't what he seems to be, and this young innocent. It's easy to see what Bashir's getting from Garak: a political education. He's learning about the byzantine, labyrinthine subtleties and intricacies that go on in the station.
Tumblr media
"It's less clear, but equally strong, to see what Garak is getting from Bashir," he continues. "Bashir is a very decent person, a veru moral man, a responsible scientist with a soul. I think Garak is learning some of this, becoming socialized. I don't mean 'humanized,' because that would be a 'specist' thing to say. He's gaining a certain sense of compassion, a certain morality and that's very touching-that's what I love about the relationship."
That being said, Robinson would also like to see Garak interact more with the rest of the Deep Space Nine crew. "It's a great company! I would love to do more with Rene Auberjonois; he and I have known each other forever. I think they'll have me do more with Quark this season, because we had some really nice scenes together in 'Profit & Loss.' Armin and I worked together just before DS9, in a production of Richard II. Also, I would love to do much more with Avery Brooks. He's a very powerful actor who has a lot of wonderful inner strength."
Garak's next two appearances, "Crossover" and "The Wire," showed two very different sides of the Cardassian. In the Mirror Universe, lntendent Kira Nerys rules Deep Space Nine, with Garak as her menacing second in command. "That wasn't hard to do," Robin.son says, "but that was interesting because I found the negative image to Garak: that Nazi, that typical Cardassian persona of the oppressor, the fascist, the totalitarian. There are no secrets to this man -- and no hiding any from him; he's just into sheer power. [The real] Garak is not into pure power at all; that's not his agenda! Now when I come back to Garak, I have more information about him, and he will be a deeper character as a result."
Tumblr media
Robinson's favorite episode to date, "The Wire" raised many questions about Garak's past and provided very few concrete answers. When an endorphin-releasing implant in Garak's brain begins malfunctioning, Dr. Bashir goes to great lengths to save his friend, ultimately discovering that Garak, among other things, used to be part of the Obsidian Order, a secret information-gathering Cardassian police force renowned for their brutal tactics. "'The Wire' was a dream," Robinson notes, "the type of episode I would like to do -- well, not all the time, because I would die! -- but frequently. That's the kind of episode that does indeed stretch my 'acting muscles,' because it demanded that I go inside myself and pull things out that perhaps didn't want to come willingly."
Originally a New England native, this "man behind the mask" recalls that "as long as I can remember, I wanted to be an actor. Not necessarily as a profession, but I always wanted to act. When I was 10, I went to this school in Rhode Island that had a wonderful drama program. It was run by a man who became my mentor. He was very supportive and helpful, and I just did plays and plays and plays."
Robinson describes his college days similarly. "I had an art history teacher who encouraged me to apply for a Fulbright Scholarship to study acting in London. I did, and I got it against all odds," he explains. "When I was studying at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, I was doing a student production of Anton Chekhov's The Seagull; I was playing Constantine, this young man with a lot of troubles, and I had -- I can only call it an apotheosis -- this very deep emotional experience. That's when I decided I would act for a living."
This led to several years of stage acting until Robinson landed his first movie role as the Scorpio Killer in Dirty Harry. "I liked Clint Eastwood," he says, "but for me, the excitement was working with the director, Don Siegel. He was an amazing man, the best director I've ever worked with. Basically, he taught me whatever I now know about filmmaking. The character I played was very underwritten and very under-realized in the original script; it was only because Don Siegel was the kind of director he was that he hired me and said, 'OK, give me the character.' At the time, I had no idea the kind of chance he was taking. It just blows my mind!"
With his film career established, Robinson appeared in all manner of movies, TV shows and plays. One of his most visible roles came in an ABC TV movie, Liberace. Portraying the flamboyant entertainer, Robinson says, "was a great experience. It ended up being one of the best things I've ever done. You see, the art of acting, for me, is quite liberating. There's a lot of freedom have when you're behaving in the skin of another person, so to speak. That, to me, is the most interesting thing about being an actor . Also, I never wanted a nine-to-five job, and I'm grateful for the fact that I've been able to fashion a career where I work at jobs and a job doesn't work me."
Robinson first attracted the notice of SF and horror aficionados with his work in Clive Barker's debut film, Hellraiser. "That was a wonderful experience," he says fondly. "For one thing, the character chance to play two characters, basically, the good and evil sides of the same person, was a thrill. The good brother, Larry, was quite repressed, and behind that repression was his evil brother Frank.
"Also, working with Clive Barker -- who's a genuinely mad, eccentric genius ---was a lot of fun. It was his first film; he really didn't know much about filmmaking, so he really had to rely on people around him who had more experience, and he was open to that. It became a genuinely collaborative experience, and there was a lot of creativity flowing on the set, which doesn’t always happen.”
His next genre appearance came in Child's Play 3, in which the evil doll Chucky arrives at a military school and terrorizes the cadets. Robinson played the sadistic barber, Sergeant Botnick, who gets a fatal shave from the diminutive killer. "A friend of mine, Jack Bender, was directing it and asked me to come in and do this character," Robinson remembers. "Jack's a very bright guy, and he saw something that I couldn't see at first reading. Then, we got working on it, and what happened was one of those fortuitous occasions when I made something really interesting, a character who was like nothing I had ever seen or done before. Sergeant Botnick the barber usually goes totally unnoticed, but it’s a piece of work that I'm very proud of."
Similar circumstances led him to Trancers Ill as Colonel Daddy Muther . "Again, it was a friend of mine, Courtney Joyner, who wrote and directed it. I did it because he asked me to. He had written the part for me, and because he was a friend, we were able to create the character as we were shooting it. Unfortunately, the shooting circumstances were very pressured because resources were very limited. It was an extremely low-budget film, and also Courtney's first ." Robinson got along very well with his fellow cast, however. "Tim Thomerson, who played the lead, is terrific, a very funny, lovely guy. I enjoyed working with him a lot."
While lately he has been appearing in projects with a definite SF slant, Robinson says he doesn’t have any one favorite genre of acting . "One of the things I appreciate about myself -- if I may say that -- is the range I have. It's something I've developed consciously, because I really love playing different kinds of characters. For example, in this British farce by Alan Bennett called Habeas Corpus, I played a guy who sells and adjusts false breasts! It was a funny, crazy role, just knock-down British humor. And in the middle of it, I went back to Rhode Island to do my one-man show, which is a very serious meditation based on if Jesus had kept a diary. This person/actor finds the diary, shares it with the audience, and ends up portraying different aspects of Jesus and His life. It's that kind of contrast that turns me on as an actor."
To Robinson, the most enjoyable aspect of playing a recurring character like Garak is the chance "to explore the character from various angles, so that you go from 'plain and simple Garak' to an episode like 'The Wire,' which goes into a very deep, personal story about the man. You get the kind of information about a character that you rarely ever get in a single episode, or indeed a single film. The writers don't sit down with us and say, 'OK, this is where your character is going,' and I rather like that . It's a surprise every time I get a script!"
In future episodes of Deep Space Nine, Andrew Robinson feels that viewers will eventually learn the truth about Garak. "Right now, all we do know is that he's in exile and he misses his homeland very much," he notes. "I know the producers have really become attached to the character, which means more and more of a commitment to me. For instance, this season I will be on the show several times. I think eventually, by the time the show ends, we will know where Garak is coming from. Perhaps we won't understand him completely in terms of his motives, or the 'why' of Garak, but I certainly think we will understand the 'what' of Garak, what he's doing on the station."
Was this not an awesome article and interview, or what??? -Wendy

In praise of Keanu Reeves, the nicest of meatheads
The  Hollywood star has embraced a life without pretensions.
Rolling Stone journalist Chris Heath once asked Keanu Reeves a simple question: why do you act? The star of The Matrix, Speed, Point Break and My Own Private Idaho paused the conversation to consider the matter. And he paused it for a long time. “Forty-two seconds, he says nothing. Not a word, a grunt, a prevarication, or a hint that an answer might come,” wrote Heath. But then an answer did come: “Uh… the words that popped into my head were expression and, uh, it's fun.” When Heath later asked Reeves if he ever wanted to direct, he waited 72 seconds for: “No, not really.”
Both Coco Chanel and George Orwell observed that by 50, we have the face we deserve. The Beirut-born Reeves is now 52 (the same age as Nigel Farage, as tweeters and bored bloggers periodically point out), but he looks pretty much the same as he has always looked: solidly handsome and straightforward, yet somehow vulnerable, like a Boy Scout who wants to do the right thing in a world that doesn’t. Jan de Bont, the director of the 1994 film Speed, called him “an action hero for the Nineties”. By this, I think he meant that, unlike the muscle-bound shit-kickers of the previous decade, a Keanu hero wouldn’t go out of his way to kill for fun. Where Arnold Schwarzenegger could, in Total Recall, shoot the woman he had wrongly believed to be his wife and joke, “Consider this a divorce,” Keanu always seemed somewhat conflicted while taking care of business – as if his eyes were saying, “Sorry it had to be this way.” The Nineties were the age of hunky romantics: Jason Priestley as Brandon in Beverly Hills, 90210, Ethan Hawke in Before Sunrise. Keanu fit that mould. I suppose even guys with guns had to be sensitive.
And even dumb guys, too, with or without guns – for you don’t have to be able to think in order to feel. Reeves began his career describing himself as “a meathead”. “I can’t help it, man,” he said. “You’ve got smart people and you’ve got dumb people. I just happen to be dumb.” He specialised in playing benevolent meatheads, from Ted “Theodore” Logan in Stephen Herek’s Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure to the spaced-out teen Tod Higgins in Ron Howard’s Parenthood (both 1989). Then he traded meathead simplicity for that of the likeable (and, as ever, sensitive) action hero in films such as Speed (1994) and Chain Reaction (1996). The Matrix series followed, as did a few smaller, more indie-ish movies (Thumbsucker, A Scanner Darkly). But the 2014 action film John Wick, whose sequel is in cinemas now, was widely welcomed as a return to form.
Reeves largely plays the assassin of the title as a primitive cinematic archetype, but he can't help but gesture towards something more profound. Wick, in both films of the franchise, is motivated by grief over the death of his wife. (In 2001, Reeves’s girlfriend Jennifer Syme died in a motor accident, a year after losing their child; perhaps the role had a personal resonance for him.) He might stab people in the head with pencils, break necks and shoot guns into crowded rooms like Chow Yun Fat after three espressos, but he’s ultimately a man of feeling.
This narrative of a career of sensitive but slightly dumb simplicity isn’t quite fair on Reeves, however. For he has, on occasion, been capable of delivering complex performances that rank alongside those of his more conventionally actorly peers. In 1991, he held his own opposite River Phoenix in Gus Van Sant’s road movie My Own Private Idaho; he has since appeared opposite Al Pacino as a wily defence attorney (The Devil’s Advocate) and Gene Hackman as a troubled sportsman (The Replacements). He has been directed by film festival favourites such as Francis Ford Coppola (Bram Stoker's Dracula), Bernardo Bertolucci (Little Buddha) and Sam Raimi (The Gift) – if not always successfully.
And he started his career not with excellent dudes, but with Shakespeare. When Reeves was 14 and living in Toronto, he was cast as Mercutio in a local production of Romeo and Juliet. An agent who saw him signed him up and secured for him a string of television roles, which swiftly took him to Hollywood. Reeves’s embarrassingly stilted attempt to portray the evil Don John in Kenneth Branagh’s Much Ado About Nothing (1993) makes me fear the discovery of video footage of that version of Romeo. But the fact that Reeves’s life as an actor began in this way reminds me of his seriousness about his craft. He might not have much range but he has admirable ambition. Many years later, when the studios pressured him to sign on for a Speed sequel, he ran off to play Hamlet in Canada.
In 2011, the New Statesman’s film critic, Ryan Gilbey, observed in the Guardian that Reeves had “some claim to be the most enigmatic, as well as the most warmly adored” actor in Hollywood. That assessment was based in part on the “Sad Keanu” meme that had spread the previous year, in which a paparazzi photograph of Reeves morosely eating a sandwich on a bench led to countless expressions of sympathy online (more than 14,000 people joined a Facebook group called “Cheer Up Keanu”; 200,000 comments about the picture were left on Reddit) and to the declaration by fans of a “Cheer Up Keanu Day”, which apparently takes place every 15 June.
This weird adoration and the sense of enigma surrounding the actor are, I think, closely linked. We know relatively little about Reeves’s off-screen life, which he keeps well guarded, but what we do know suggests qualities that are, for one reason or another, vanishingly rare in entertainment gossip – warm humanity and hidden depths. Hagiographic stories circulate of the actor donating millions of dollars to animal welfare charities and cancer research (his younger sister Kim was diagnosed with leukaemia); of Reeves offering stranded hitchhikers a ride; of a team of stuntmen being surprised with a gift of £6,000 Harley Davidson motorbikes, which he had quietly paid for.
“Money is the last thing I think about,” Hello magazine reported him saying in 2003. Not long earlier, he had reduced his pay by several million dollars so that the producers of The Devil’s Advocate and The Replacements could afford to hire Al Pacino and Gene Hackman, respectively. And, according to ABC News, he “handed over his valuable profit-sharing points” to the special effects and costume design team of the Matrix franchise, which he believed deserved the true credit for its success. (Some place the value of this donation at $50m.) By these accounts, Reeves is most definitely a righteous dude. He’s also a curious one. A few days after the Brexit vote, the New Statesman’s politics editor, George Eaton, was surprised to find him visiting Portcullis House as a guest of the Conservative MP Nadhim Zahawi. It was “fittingly surreal”, George told me, and Reeves came across as “courteous” and “modest” when he posed for a group selfie with some of the journalists who happened to be there.
Tumblr media
As Reeves’s star rose in the early 1990s, the American men’s magazine Details lamented: “Nearly all celebrities – nearly all people – like to talk about themselves [but] Keanu doesn’t.” I guess it’s frustrating for journalists that someone so clearly interesting should be reticent about telling us about himself.
But I don’t really have to know much about Keanu Reeves to like him, though I’ve never met the guy. And there are things that I can learn from him, too. In Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure, Alex Winter’s Bill S Preston, Esq., paraphrases Socrates: “The only true wisdom consists in knowing that you know nothing.” To which Reeves’s Ted responds: “That’s us, dude.” That’s them – and every one of us with any sense, if we’re honest. We may think we’re smart and even persuade the people around us that we are. But in the end, most of us are meatheads. Reeves shows in his life and work that meatheads can live good lives, even in the face of disparagement and personal tragedy. Maybe Chanel and Orwell were on to something – he really does have the face he deserves.

Vibration Training - Fact Or Fiction?
Vibration education and focused vibration training has lately hit the headlines while Madonna and Kyle Monologue announced they had been devotees of the system which entails appearing exercising while standing on a vibrating platform (Power plate, Fit-bib or Galileo). Manufacturers of vibration gadget factor out that outcomes can be acquired in a lot much less time as compared to the use of vibration-loose device, including 10 mins on a platform is equal to 1 hour of going for walks. Surely this message should have a few basis in truth.
Current Research
However, the information may be very inconsistent in large part due to the variety of vibration software strategies such as vibrating structures, vibrating dumbbells, and focused vibration gadget. Additionally the protocols accompanied throughout vibration schooling including resting vibration, static workout with vibration and dynamic exercising with vibration additionally make conclusions difficult to draw. Researchers at London South Bank University have published a paper in a peer-reviewed magazine demonstrating that in and next to a unmarried set of leg extension exercising with vibration (Vibrate, Neuroscience Ltd.) at 35% of 1-repetition most (1-RM), topics answered in a comparable manner to the responses observed next to the situation appearing a single set of leg extension at 70% 1-RM without vibration (Mileage ET AL., 2006). The schooling research are not completed but but this result shows that decreasing the workout depth Galileo test  (weight lifted) and including a vibration stimulus could lead to similar advantages as excessive depth resistance training. It is still very early days for vibration research and application but the important principle appears to be lowering the stimulus amount and growing the stimulus fine. For these reasons we would always advise that someone interested by the use of vibration for training, in particular on the elite degree, consults qualified practitioners as a part of a education programmer which include the Human Performance Center at London South Bank University.
How it Works
So what's it approximately vibration schooling that would potentially result in the advantages defined above? Well likely the easiest way to think about vibration education is to don't forget when you have been to the medical doctors and the physician has accomplished the knee tendon faucet inflicting your lower leg to leap up. This reaction is called a stretch reflex. The stretching of the muscle or tendon is sensed by means of receptors and sends a completely rapid signal to the spinal wire which responds via causing a completely sturdy muscular contraction, and if this tendon faucet is superimposed on a maximal voluntary contraction, greater pressure may be produced. Now believe doing this knee faucet 20-30 instances a 2nd at the same time as acting exercise. This could lead to greater ranges of muscular activation than voluntary contractions by myself. Certainly we've seen shifts in muscle recruitment patterns in the direction of extra activation of fast effective muscle fibers than in everyday non vibrated contractions, main to the inspiration that combining education with vibration should lead to a greater training stimulus and consequently more performance profits. In fact researchers have expected the amount of work performed from the g-forces concerned and have envisioned that a big quantity of labor would need to be finished to healthy the levels of g-forces involved (Bosch ET AL., 2000). The contemporary methods of vibration shipping do have their boundaries. The maximum commonplace method of vibration training is that of vibrating platforms that the consumer plays sporting activities on. These gadgets had been used frequently in studies but the outcomes produced, even though imparting capability, aren't constant. Around 30% of people can not use those gadgets as they can purpose nausea, and if used incorrectly can motive the vibration to be dispatched immediately up the backbone to the base of the cranium (as I determined out sooner or later after I was left dizzy and an aching head!).
Targeted Vibration Training
For those reasons we decide on the concept of focused vibration at once to the exercising muscle ensuring a greater unique education stimulus and doing away with any of the unpleasant aspect outcomes. Also targeted vibration education has been shown to cause energy improvement ex more than traditional electricity education (Reassuring ET AL., 1994). In our lab the targeted vibration machine we developed (Vibrate) became examined on small companies of human beings and 1 girl ought to carry 70Kg 1 time before schooling, and after education ex in keeping with week for five weeks with Vibrate she lifted 125Kg 17 times that is a wonderful development. This look at turned into supplied at the Physiological Society meeting. We additionally accept as true with that there was extended bone formation to in shape this electricity development.
Breathing Vibration Training
We have these days launched a focused vibration tool for the respiration machine called you breathe which causes the airflow into and out of the lungs to be pulsate stimulating the stretch reflex of the breathing muscle mass. Results look very thrilling with 15% development in overall performance after simply 10 breaths (Summers ET AL., 2007). You breathe is presently being used by elite cyclists, triathletes, footballers and rugby players who all report perceptible blessings for his or her sports overall performance. More trials are underneath manner with plans to hold clinical trials with the goal of decreasing symptoms of cardio-respiratory disorder including cystic fibrosis, coronary coronary heart disorder, asthma and COPS.
Conclusions
In conclusion, vibration schooling in reality appears to offer the possibility of growing the exercise return on funding Galileo test, getting extra returned for a given effort, however it is still too soon to draw conclusions approximately the way to educate with vibration and what vibration technique to apply. We strongly propose taking advice from certified practitioners and together with vibration schooling in a whole schooling programmer. Certainly the best capability for vibration schooling is in rehabilitation on clinical populations which includes the elderly and osteoporosis.
Dr Paul Summers is a physiologist at London South Bank University. His understanding is gaining knowledge of and memory of respiration and skeletal muscle systems, and overall performance improvement. He is likewise an inventor of vibration schooling related gadgets whose advantages are being implemented to elite athletes and medical populations.

My Highly Anticipated Turbulence Training Review
The Workout Program That Claims Massive Fat Loss in Minimum Workout Time
I’ve been asked recently by a number of people to write a turbulence training review so here she goes.
Overall User Rating:
Ebook Title: Turbulence Training Ebook Author: Craig Ballantyne Ebook Price: Check Current Specials Reviewer: Todd Bowman Site Reviewed: www.turbulencetraining.com Recommended For: Beginners and Intermediates Format: PDF Ebook – Instant download Bonus’s: 6-Month Bodyweight Turbulence Training Manual AND The TT Bodyweight 500 Challenge AND the TT for Athletes 8-Week Training Program, TT Ultimate Advanced Bodyweight Workout AND The TT Bodyweight 1000 Fat Burning Challenge. Guarantee: 60 Full Days
The Turbulence Training workout makes a pretty bold claim.
They claim that a man or woman can lose lots of fat even if you don’t have a lot of time to workout in the gym. This is a pretty big claim to live up to seeing that they also say you can get results like this in just 3 workouts every week.
These kind of gain muscle and fat loss are a dime a dozen.
The question is, can these claims be verified?
I’ve been hearing everybody rant and rave about Turbulence Training, people I really respected. So I thought I’d do a little analysis of the program myself and see what all the fuss was about. I figured I’d save my opinion for after my review.
Before we continue on with this Turbulence Training review, I’d like to take a further inspection at the so called guru behind this entire fitness program. I thought this so called fitness expert was nobody special until I realized Craig Ballantyne was not only a best selling author but he’s contributed to Men’s Health Magazine, Men’s Fitness Magazine, Oxygen Magazine and Shape Magazine.
Looks like I was wrong and Craig Ballantyne really does know what he’s talking about.
Having been working out since 1996 it’s kind of hard for me to trust what these guys say, unless I can really scope out what they’re saying and test the information myself. About two weeks ago I was able to squeeze some information out of Craig Ballantyne about his formal training in the fitness industry and other things. I hate to admit it but I was actually slightly impressed as Craig’s expertise goes back to the middle of the 90′s for fitness training but also as a researcher for large companies doing research trials on bodybuilding supplements, muscle building and cardiovascular workouts and their effects on human physiology.
After closer examination it turns out that since 1994 Craig has trained well into the hundreds of personal training clients and conducted over a thousand training sessions. Seems that the years of personal training and teaching has show him a thing or two of what works in the gym and what doesn’t.
If you look into any article that Craig Ballantyne has written, you’ll find upon further inspection that Craig is really tough on conventional aerobic and cardiovascular workouts that are popular these days. All that to say that if you want some quick new cardio workout you can do each week then Turbulence Training is not for you. This is why I wanted to put together this Turbulence Training review so I could weed out the serious people from the people who want a quick fix. Turbulence Training is more for people who have access to limited workout equipment like a flat bench, a set of dumbells or an exercise ball and some serious motivation to change their body. If that’s you, I think you’re going to like Turbulence Training by Craig Ballantyne.
People have been sending me emails asking what Turbulence Training really is. After having studied and critiqued Turbulence Training I’ve discovered it’s a nice combination of resistence training along with heavy amounts of interval training that works surprisingly well to raise your metabolism that allows your body to burn fat when you’re not working out in the gym. It’s a pretty interesting concept. Here’s a further assessment from Craig Ballantyne himself: “Cardio doesn’t boost your metabolism after exercise. Only strength training and interval training do that – while you work, sleep, and eat – your body will be shedding fat.”
The thing I really enjoy about Turbulence Training is that all the workouts and training can be done at home. Currently I don’t have a home gym setup (still working on that one) but for those that do, Turbulence Training is perfect. For those guys and gals who are strong and fit, I recommend getting a chin up bar though. I have a love/hate relationship with my local gym and sometimes enjoy long workouts. I know it’s much more benefitial to have short and intense workouts. Turbulence Training has been kicking my butt lately in terms of getting in, doing work, and getting out and not messing around.
Last week I’ve recommended Turbulence Training to 2 guys who I see all the time at the gym.
I see them training for hours and hours, and they’re not even that fit to begin with. After working all day, communiting to work, running errands, spending time with your wife, husband or kids, you don’t have another sixty to ninety minutes to spend working out. If that’s you, you have to suspend judgement and evaluate this program yourself. Learn more about how Turbulence Training just might be the perfect workout program for your busy schedule.
I will say though in this Turbulence Training review that this workout program is not going to make you bulk up and get huge. If you’re interested in stacking on tons of muscle, I’d recommend no nonsense muscle building, muscle gain truth or muscle gaining secrets as these bodybuilding programs will help you gain more size. But most guys don’t want to put on 50lbs of muscle. Turbulence Training will help you shed fat (especially around your midsection), get lean and ripped. Picture an athletic and muscular swimmer or boxer. They’re not huge but they definitely have some size and are lean. Turbulence Training will help you get defined, and chiseled.
The other thing to note is that a lot of crappy bodybuilding routines I’ve seen over the years (since 1996) are freaking boring. Turbulence Training is not only fun but it’s more challenging that I expected. I like a good challenge. You won’t be doing the same bodybuilding routines week in and week out. The unique exercises include some pretty dynamic bodyweight exercises that improve functional muscle strength and ab strength without needing to drop $300 dollars on workout gear.
The two guys I recommended Turbulence Training to started using the 6 week beginner workout program and so far they love it. It also has a 4 week intermediate training program. Since I’ve been working out since 1996 I started out using his 16 week advanced training phase. Big mistake on my part. I learned quickly the difference between having big muscles and functional strength. I actually had to drop down to the intermediate program because I was too sore for the advance program. I don’t even like to admit there.
One of the other points I’d like to mention about Turbulence Training in this particular synopsis, is that there’s a massive number of free bonus workout routines for muscle building (bodyweight only), advanced fat loss sections as well as bonus for females.
I’d also like to mention in this Turbulence Training review is that the reason why I had such a hard time with his advanced series (even though I felt like I was ready for it) was that each workout phase builds on the section before it. He built the system that way after years of working with hundreds of clients. Other training programs will having you so sore you can’t walk for 5 days or you’ll leave the gym puking in the parking lot. Men’s Health expert, Craig Ballantyne is smarter than that. He knows that only physical results matter.
Here’s Some Of What’s Included In Turbulence Training
A contract: I really liked this. It’s basically a pledge and written promise between you and yourself indicating your true and total commitment to the system.
The Turbulence Training ebook: The heart of the entire program. Watch your preconviced notions about health and fitness be shattered on every page.
Nutrition Guidelines: A powerful report written by expert nutritionist Dr. Chris Mohr, Ph.D. Q&A Section: All your final questions will be answered.
A 21 Day Eating Plan: Build healthy dietary habits that will help you gain momentum towards building the body you deserve.
The Turbulence Training Workouts: You get the beginner, intermediate and advanced routines. Another point to note in this Turbulence Training review, is that it comes with an MP3 course Craig Ballantyne explains in great detail the entire program as well as every single exercise and how it affects the body. It’s kinda like sitting down one on one with Craig where he goes over what exercises you should do and why. And each exercise is explained in ever greater detail with photos and captions so you are guaranteed not to mess up during your workout sessions.
Here’s what Turbulence Training isn’t….
Mind numbing cardio workouts
A machine-based workout system
A bodybuilding program designed to get huge
A workout routine that wastes your time with silly isolation exercises
A diet plan that is extremely restrictive.
You won’t find any of the above in Turbulence Training. I’m glad you’re reading my Turbulence Training review because some guys actually want a routine that includes the above points.
The Turbulence Training workout system is for busy men and women who really want to become the best they can be on a physical level. The program will help you build muscle and shed fat but not look bulky and weird all without a gym membership (assuming you have a few pieces of equipment at home). Personally I like going to the gym so it still works out for me.
The other thing is that the workouts are pretty fun and challenging. I mean no workout is actually “fun” but you know what I mean. You’ll actually enjoy working out instead of dreading it. That’s about as fun as it gets right?
If you’re interested in one of the best workout routines on the market today I would strongly suggest you take a look at Turbulence Training and see how it might work for you. What I was impressed with was the quality of training, the uniqueness of the routines, the exclusive bonuses, the guarantee, the customer support as well as the community once you join I thought these were great. I was highly impressed. I have to say Craig Ballantyne has turned a non believer into a believer. And remember,
Turbulence Training is sold through the Clickbank Marketplace and Craig has been kind enough to offer an 8 week no questions asked 100% full money back guarantee. He recently told me the refund rate is not even 1% so that means customer satisfaction of Turbulence Training is sky high. But the refund is there in case your dog ate your wallet and you can’t make rent.

Is there any truth to anti-aging schemes?
New Post has been published on https://nexcraft.co/is-there-any-truth-to-anti-aging-schemes/
Is there any truth to anti-aging schemes?
On a Thursday evening in late January, the faithful gather. They trickle into the Church of Perpetual Life, about an hour’s drive north of Miami, until a throng of around 100 people cram around tables lining the first-floor hall of this renovated house of worship. Along one wall is a display of reading material: pamphlets on heart disease, flyers itemizing the additives in Cheez-Its and their detrimental health effects, a handbill about the Ms. Senior Florida pageant. On the other side of the room, there’s a snack buffet with beans, broccoli, carrots, cubed cheese, sliced meats, and olives. It’s easy to pick out the regulars, who mingle clutching biology textbooks or readily shaking hands.
Many of them pause to greet the diminutive man who is their host: Bill Faloon. Clean-shaven and youthfully slim in a dark suit, with jet-black hair and a formidably bridged nose, he is the church’s founder. Just yesterday, he laid out its gospel to me, saying, “We’re talking about immortality.” His followers, he says, are “people trying to live as long as possible, maybe even forever.”
At 63, Faloon is old enough to remember when such talk labeled you a kook or charlatan. In the late 1970s, he co-founded the Life Extension Foundation, a nonprofit promoting the notion that people don’t need to die—and later started a business to sell them the supplements and lab tests to help make that dream real. Nowadays he also distributes a magazine to 300,000 people nationwide and invites speakers to monthly gatherings at the church, billed as a science-based, nondenominational meeting place where supporters learn about the latest developments in the battle against aging. Their faith is in human technologies that might one day end involuntary death.
After an hour of mixing, we all head to the second-floor nave and fill the pews for the evening’s event. Several rows back sits a beer scientist. Next to me, two women in dresses and heels. At the front, an elderly gentleman with hearing aids. Tonight’s speaker is Aubrey de Grey, a biomedical gerontologist and chief science officer of SENS Research Foundation, a Mountain View, California, outfit that studies regenerative medicines that might cure diseases associated with old age.
De Grey’s startup reflects the rush of Big Tech money into this arena as the U.S. population ages. Baby boomers are retiring, and the Census Bureau estimates older people will outnumber children by 2035. Google launched Calico in 2013 to solve the challenges of aging and associated illnesses. Two years later, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, started the $3 billion Chan Zuckerberg Science program, whose lofty goals include curing all disease. And Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel invested in Unity Biotechnology, launched in 2016 to develop therapies for age-related ailments.
Today, it’s also easy to locate university-affiliated labs at places such as Harvard and Stanford investigating their own interventions in the process of growing old. Since the National Institutes of Health established its Institute on Aging division in 1974, scientists have dedicated more and more resources to the challenge. Over the past dozen years, the NIA’s budget has doubled to more than $2 billion.
Faloon predates them all. These days, the several hundred people who regularly attend events at the church are personal validation for Faloon, who thinks that anyone his age and younger, given the proper physiological tweaking, could live to a healthy age of 130. The hope is that, by then, new solutions will make death truly optional. Yet no amount of self-tinkering can assure him and his followers that day will ever come.
Faloon was 8 years old and living in Pittsburgh when his mother told him that dying was a part of life. The concept didn’t sit well with him. “I was determined to find a way to conquer death,” he says.
As a teenager, he became fascinated by the nascent and dubious field of cryonics—freezing the body upon death in hopes that a future technology can reanimate it. After high school, Faloon studied mortuary science so he could cryopreserve people. To this day, he is a licensed funeral director and embalmer. In the early ’70s, at age 19, he moved to South Florida and soon fell in with folks equally fascinated by cryonics. At a get-together of local enthusiasts, he met Saul Kent, a fellow believer, and in 1977, the two founded what would eventually become the Life Extension Foundation.
A few years later, the two men formed a business—the Life Extension Buyers Club—to sell supplements. The problem was that they were also helping their members obtain medications that were not approved in the U.S. In 1987, federal agents kicked in their doors, seizing their products. In 1991, the U.S. government indicted them for helping to distribute unapproved drugs and pharmaceuticals without a prescription.
We promoted ways to slow aging that hadn’t made it into the mainstream yet.”
Bill Faloon
“We were promoting all kinds of ways to slow aging that nowadays are recognized but hadn’t made it into the mainstream yet,” Faloon says. For instance, metformin. Approved for prescription in England in 1958 and in Canada in 1972, the drug increases insulin sensitivity, improving the body’s ability to process sugars. This effect on glucose metabolism is the main reason metformin is now commonly used in the U.S. to treat type 2 diabetes, but the Food and Drug Administration didn’t approve it until 1994. Studies since then show that diabetics on the medication generally live longer and appear to get cancer as much as 40 percent less than diabetics on other medications.
Back in the ’80s, Faloon considered what he’d read about metformin enough for him to recommend it to buyers. But science isn’t so quick to repurpose a drug. First, a randomized controlled trial has to show results . This year, one such test, called Targeting Aging with Metformin, or TAME, should get underway. It is the only FDA-sponsored study to look at whether a specific drug can slow aging.
FDA approval is predicated on outcomes. If you want permission to sell a new kind of pharmaceutical for lowering cholesterol, you will first need to show that it decreases a person’s risk of developing heart disease. That it took the regulatory agency this many decades even to consider greenlighting an anti-aging drug speaks to how complex a challenge it is to untangle the process of growing old.
Aging begins at the cellular level. But it took a long time to figure that out. For much of the 20th century, biologists thought that cells were immortal. That changed in the 1960s, when microbiologist Leonard Hayflick discovered that some human cells divide 40 to 60 times before stopping at what we now call the Hayflick Limit. That division is important. It’s what helps your body grow, or repair damage (like after you cut your finger ), or fend off attack (like when your immune system defends against a virus).
Since then, researchers have discovered that even cells that keep dividing age, and they become inefficient at basic functions such as repairing DNA and recycling proteins, lipids, and other key molecules. Unable to maintain themselves, they accumulate damage, which impedes their ability to function normally or repair bodily tissues. Think of a car that falls into disrepair until one day, it just won’t start. Our senses diminish, our skin goes slack, our joints creak, our muscles atrophy, and eventually the diseases associated with our older years creep in to finish us off: stroke, Alzheimer’s, pulmonary fibrosis, diabetes, heart disease, cancer.
Faloon was determined to use the Life Extension Foundation to search for alternatives. He persisted even while under indictment; the foundation and buyers club remained legally free to market and sell supplements. Federal prosecutors, struggling to find testifying witnesses, ended up dropping all charges by 1996.
In 2013, he and Kent took their mission a step further, spending $880,000 to buy a building and open the Church of Perpetual Life. At first attendance was low, but now the venue is regularly packed. The place attracts medical doctors and laypeople alike. For several hours each month, they swap the latest information, take in what visiting researchers have to say, and, afterward, enjoy a catered meal together (January’s menu offered chicken, salmon, and tilapia).
“The idea is to bring people together and talk about a lot of ideas,” says Faloon. “It’s a real attempt to persuade more of the public that dying is not a good thing.”
In 2013, the academic journal Cell published a paper called “The Hallmarks of Aging,” which identified nine factors. Some contribute to the decline of young cells, while others play a role in driving the pathologies that lead to our demise. The report also highlighted several experimental therapies that have yielded encouraging results so far.
Most of the approaches that are mentioned in the paper fit into particular buckets: drugs that regulate metabolic pathways related to aging; tactics for killing off cells that have hit their division limit; restorative treatments to supply missing stem cells, which divide to repair tissues and organs. Researchers had previously tested all of the remedies in rodents.
“We don’t know for sure that the same tricks we use in laboratory animals will work in people, but probably some of them will,” says Matt Kaeberlein, a pathology professor at the University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle. Metformin and rapamycin are two drugs with promising implications. In mice and rat trials, both extended life span. Some of Kaeberlein’s work shows that rapamycin, typically delivered as an immunosuppressant following organ transplants in humans, mimics the effects of caloric restriction. Eating less puts strain on the body, and might alert cells that it’s time to halt division and focus on repair and stress resistance, both of which could contribute to longevity. Rapamycin might create the same effect without requiring you to skip a meal.
Nir Barzilai likes metformin because it is safe. Diabetics have used metformin, a modified version of a plant compound, for decades. Barzilai is director of the Institute for Aging Research at New York’s Albert Einstein College of Medicine, the lead sponsor of the five-year TAME trial that will soon enroll 3,000 participants between ages 65 and 80. He believes that the drug does more to alleviate damage in an aging cell than it does for improving glucose metabolism.
“People with diabetes on metformin have 17 percent less mortality than people without diabetes, even though they are more obese and more sick to begin with,” Barzilai says of the drug’s effect. “So metformin is really about aging much more than diabetes.”
The Cell paper highlighted other ways to disrupt the aging process. If these units of living matter become inefficient as they age and divide, couldn’t we just replace them? In the case of stem cells, yes.
“What’s the key to being able to turn a 1950 Chevrolet into a useful operating tool?” asks surgeon-turned-biomedical pioneer Bob Hariri. “It’s all about replacement parts, right? Look at what happens to people who get stem-cell transplants for bone-marrow reconstitution. If the donor is younger than the recipient, quite often the biology of that recipient improves.”
Hariri is a co-founder of Human Longevity Inc., a Silicon Valley venture using supercomputers to search for genes related to human aging. But he’s better known for his research into stem-cell therapies, first as CEO of Celgene Cellular Therapeutics, and now as founder of Celularity, a startup that launched this year. Its plan: Harvest stem cells from human placentas and inject them into older people. Hariri believes the usually frail organ systems of older individuals will improve because they will, in effect, be composed of younger cells.
Another strategy is to try to clear senescent cells—older ones that stop dividing—from the body. Research shows that some of these old-timers produce chemical signals that interfere with the functions of healthy cells. They can also cause symptoms such as inflammation, and help bring on fatal age-associated diseases.
Killing those rogues is a new focus among researchers. A team at the Mayo Clinic’s Kogod Center on Aging recently managed to destroy senescent cells in mice using a new class of medications called senolytic agents. As reported this past summer in Nature Communications, other testing on human cells in culture showed that senolytic drugs targeted senescent cells while leaving other types alone. A clinical trial to test the drugs in humans with chronic kidney disease is underway.
“We’ve got approval to start trials, and some are just beginning, but they’re in people who’ve got serious illnesses directly tied to cellular senescence,” says Kogod Center director James Kirkland. He adds that they need to see what happens before moving on to healthier populations.
Across all these potential aging interventions, there is one common denominator, and that is their fallibility. The medical community doesn’t know what slows or reverses the process in humans, let alone what might cause harm. For that reason, Kirkland and his peers caution against the kind of self-experimentation Faloon practices.
“We’re playing with a new treatment paradigm,” Kirkland says of their research. “I’ve been around long enough to know there are going to be unpredictable things that happen as we get into people.”
Faloon believes he faces a bigger risk from waiting than from being his own guinea pig. “I’m afraid that with aging research, some of the people don’t have a sufficient sense of urgency,” he says. He continually incorporates different interventions into his life-extension regimen. He restricts his calories to some 1,200 a day, about half what the average man consumes. He also ingests more than 50 medications daily, including metformin and Life Extension’s own concoctions of nutraceuticals with names like Cell Regenerator and LongevityAI. “Anything that might work, I am doing,” he says.
Most recently, Faloon underwent a series of infusions of NAD+ molecules, which David Sinclair, co-director of the Glenn Center for the Biology of Aging at Harvard Medical School, has called “the closest we’ve gotten to a fountain of youth.” The molecules help regulate cellular aging but diminish over time. In studies, older mice given NAD+ molecule precursors look and act younger.
Because he’s impatient for clinical trials to yield conclusive results, Faloon gives about $5 million a year in profits from the buyers club to underwrite medical research. So far, the data from two recent studies on NAD+ and rapamycin that he backed are unpublished. “If we don’t accelerate all these different projects, I’m not going to make it,” Faloon says.
Meddling with nature can carry unforeseen consequences. One strategy to renew old cells might encourage cancer.”
But there’s a reason that science is slow. Most researchers will say that aging, if not an outright mystery, remains a cross between a jigsaw puzzle and an aggravating game of Whac-A-Mole. They warn that meddling with nature can carry unforeseen consequences. For instance, one experimental strategy, which deploys the enzyme telomerase to renew old cells, might encourage premalignant cells to turn cancerous.
“People look at aging as something that is very simple,” says Michael Fossel, a former professor of the biology of aging at Grand Valley State University in Michigan. “They pick their favorite parameter, and then they push it. Can we reverse aging in people in clinical trials? Nobody knows yet.”
Most current studies have a more circumscribed objective, which is to ameliorate the diseases that occur in our senior years. Take, for example, the TAME trial. According to lead scientist Barzilai, the FDA will consider metformin a sufficient anti-aging drug if it can delay age-related diseases for two years.
In other words, radical life extension—the notion of immortality that the Church of Perpetual Life promotes—is not the goal. Pushing back the onset of major maladies so we live a little longer and die a little healthier is. For the Silicon Valley companies and barons of Big Tech assisting this effort, there’s clearly a business imperative. “Anything that extends life and maintains health is the biggest potential business in the history of mankind,” Celularity’s Hariri says. Another researcher, Kris Verburgh, a professor at Silicon Valley-based think tank Singularity University, aptly points out in his book The Longevity Code, “If there is one thing multimillionaires dislike, it is having to die.”
But aging research can’t promise them—or Bill Faloon—anything. “Gerontology is science, and immortalism is religion,” says rapamycin researcher Kaeberlein. “It’s based on the faith that human technology will get to the point where you can actually live forever. But there’s no scientific basis for that at all.”
In science, time outs the truth. For Faloon, time will always be the enemy. Undaunted, he keeps cryonics as an insurance policy for himself, his wife, and his two sons. Don’t wait for the mainstream, he tells his followers. Come to church. Celebrate. Rejoice. And live.
