Just found there’s little to no written content for Suzume here, so I started another wip on a whim. This’ll probably be a mix of romance and angst.
a Souta x reader (snippet)
Plz rb if you enjoyed !
--
Eyes open, the air around you still feels ethereal.
It's gotten worse, your ability to tell the difference between your dreams and the waking world. The worst part of it is your keystone; the one thing keeping you tethered and grounded is missing.
Staring at the familiar ceiling not a couple feet above you, you reach out and touch it. The coolness of the surface tingles through your fingers. It sure feels real.
The sheets and blankets that cover you keep you wrapped in warmth as they do most mornings.
You release a sigh. Time to bite the bullet.
Reluctance and anticipation overwhelm your heart, but you bring yourself to turn your head to look past the edge of the elevated bed and over the rest of the rented flat.
There's no one.
“(Name)...”
There's no one...
“(Name)...”
He left...?
“(Name).”
Your eyes open, a sharp intake of air expanding your lungs. Blue eyes and a tousle of dark hair immediately greet you. His face is worried.
A pad from his finger swipes gently at your cheek, taking a tear you hadn't noticed away with it.
“Hey...” his voice is soft but laced with concern. You realize most of his body is on top of yours, providing a comforting weight. "Happy sunrise. You were in a deep sleep again. You okay..?"
“Souta?”
He smiles at that. “I'm here.”

oh look trauma! I was wondering where that was. *sigh* The fuck kinda person rapes a woman and makes a her have a child for the sake of record?..
*Back at the truck*
Tumblr media
Wait so you made these?!
Tumblr media
Yeah I did, honestly making weapons is pretty easy and even created blue prints.
Tumblr media
Maybe I can show Future Foundation? I'm sure they like it, right?
Tumblr media
Yeah, I'm... sure they would like it...
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Tumblr media
...Well, seems they really are working together to stop that Kota.
Tumblr media
Yeah I'm surprise too, you figure they would side with the guy but they don't.
Tumblr media
But still, I can't believe that fucker did all this and created one of those Warriors of Hope to teach his mother a lesson, you gotta be some type of idiot.
Tumblr media
You really are assuming the worse, huh?
Tumblr media
As say, we ain't working for Despair anymore and we are sticking with it.
Tumblr media
Indeed so plus if you want further proof, I think we can assist with weapons as well.
Tumblr media
In fact, I can control a tank very well and weapons, so if you want me to shoot a bazooka then I can do so!
Tumblr media
Hmm, you certainly have proven yourselves but will need to see that in action, Yasufumi - do contact Nagi Nanami, will get everyone prepare.
Tumblr media
Of course sir...
*As everyone is leaving, Yasufumi goes onto his computer*
Tumblr media
Man Nagi, you really did something unpredictable - I really hope to god this works...

Hello, Ridia-san! Can I request a Siren Saru?
Saru is open about him being a siren, but most people don't know since they thought those behaviors of his were just part of his personality. Like taking a long ass bath like he owns the shower, avoiding cats (he is half fishy so- (poor neko), not bathing with other people, etc.
Suddenly a mission with other clans happens, and they need to infiltrate a building in the middle of the ocean. Unfortunately, the said ocean is dangerous and cannot be taken lightly, so they need another way to get it there without gaining the attention of other people. While discussing what they should do (more like fighting *ehem* Homra and Scepter 4), Saru grew impatient and decided to jump in the waters. Seeing this threw others into panic mode, but after a while, a head emerged from the water. It's Saruhiko. With his long hair and below his waist is this large, beautiful white to blue ombre tail that seems to glow under the sun. Seeing this seems to strike the others into silence and... (I'll leave the rest to you, Ridia-san! Hoping to see the reactions of the other clans + alphabet squad ^^)
I feel like Yata and Munakata would probably be the main two who know about this, because Yata lived with Fushimi for a while and Munakata is just creepy that way. Like imagine in this AU that mythical creatures are known to exist but it’s like a low key thing where they try to blend in with humans. Say Kisa was actually a siren, Niki caught her out of the water and convinced her to come live with him on land. After she gives birth to Fushimi (wait, would he have been hatched from an egg in this AU) she promptly returns to the ocean to get away from her shitty husband and Fushimi is left alone with Niki, who enjoys joking about making tasty fried fish out of his son. Fushimi doesn’t really try to hide that he’s a siren but he doesn’t talk about it either, he forges a note to get himself out of swimming in gym class and doesn’t talk to anyone about his true heritage because he doesn’t want to deal with being looked at like some kind of freak.
Yata of course is the first one to really find out, like maybe this is the first time too that Fushimi’s been hesitant about letting anyone know his secret because he doesn’t want Misaki to reject him. Yata drags him to the beach one day though and maybe Yata ends up getting caught in like a rip tide or something and Fushimi dives in to save him, revealing his true form with beautiful glittering scales and a long elegant tail. Yata is amazed and immediately starts talking about how awesome this is, Saruhiko is even cooler than he thought, and suddenly being a siren doesn’t seem like such a bad thing. When they join Homra though imagine Fushimi feeling irritated at the idea of everyone knowing, like Totsuka suggests a beach trip and Yata’s ready to mention how cool Fushimi is in the water and Fushimi just shushes him and spends the whole time under an umbrella on the beach instead (Anna keeps giving him significant looks though, and when someone tries to hit him with a water gun she moves in front of him to intercept the splash).
Then he joins S4 and like the first thing Munakata does is wonder if Fushimi would like a private bath due to his ‘heritage,’ Fushimi gives him this suspicious look like I don’t even want to know how you know. He denies the special treatment though, the whole thing is too much of a pain and he doesn’t want to deal with annoying questions. Instead he always takes his baths alone and probably puts like a lock on the bath when he’s in there too, if anyone wants to come take one when he’s in the bath they have to get used to waiting a good hour or so. Some of the lower ranked members complain about it, that the brat from Homra is always hogging the bath, but Fushimi doesn’t care and Munakata just gives a secretive smile when he hears. Also imagine Fushimi being slightly nervous around Kamo and trying his best to hide it, he doesn’t have anything against Kamo it’s just he knows the guy was a sushi chef and Fushimi’s natural instincts make him tense up around that kind of person.
The whole thing remains mostly a secret (I feel like Awashima finds out about it at some point too, and is briefly shocked before admirably recovering and resuming whatever mission they were on) until one day there’s a Strain issue that does require the squad to infiltrate an island in the middle of the ocean. This is post-ROK and Homra is helping out, though maybe Yata and Anna are elsewhere at the time and Kusanagi is in charge on that end. Munakata is pleased that their beach training paid off at last, the rest of the squad are more hesitant because they can all swim but this is a little more than just ‘swimming.’ Kusanagi doesn’t think sending their guys out into the ocean with just life vests is the best idea. He and Munakata are being passive aggressive at each other while Fushimi sits there getting increasingly annoyed (and maybe Munakata keeps looking at Fushimi significantly out of the corner of his eye and it’s getting irritating). Finally he’s like ‘I’ll just take care of it’ and he dives right into the water. The S4 alphabet and Kusanagi are all immediately alarmed, Kusanagi did not expect Fushimi of all people to be this reckless, but Munakata is totally serene about the whole thing as he says there is no problem.
Kusanagi’s all disbelieving ‘no problem?’ when Fushimi surfaces in full siren mode, complaining that Munakata’s going to owe him overtime for this. The alphabet boys are all momentarily on guard but then Akiyama gives a tentative ‘Fushimi…san?’ and Fushimi clicks his tongue to cover that he’s actually a little embarrassed about this whole thing. The S4 boys all think this is really cool though, Doumyouji happily says see Kamo he doesn’t hate you he was just worried you’d fillet him. Fuse mutters that this explains the long baths and Hidaka remembers how Fushimi was the only one who never got into the water when they did their deserted island beach training. The Homra alphabet are probably wondering how they missed this, imagine Kamamoto texting Yata all worriedly that Fushimi turned into a fish and getting back a sheepish ‘oh…you guys didn’t know, huh?.’ Kusanagi especially is a little baffled that he didn’t know this, though now it makes sense why Fushimi never went in the ocean at beach trips and why Yata always acted nervous whenever they went out for sushi. Munakata meanwhile is definitely being unbearably smug about the fact that he knew this all along and Kusanagi didn’t, much to Kusanagi’s irritation, though Awashima at least has the grace to look a little apologetic that they never mentioned this to him.

Trouble's Brewing Remake: What's it about, and why is it happening?
Tumblr media
//So, I think I kept everyone waiting for quite a while after I announced this, and I think it's finally time that I explain what's going to happen with this arc, and what it's all about.
//After some deep reflection and feedback, I realized there were areas that could be improved, and I’m really excited about the direction this rewrite is taking. I know some of you might have questions, so I wanted to address a few that might be on your mind. From what inspired the change, to how this will affect the story moving forward, and what new things you can expect, I’ll cover it all right here.
//No need for a long, drawn out explanation, so let's get started.
1 - Why is Trouble's Brewing being re-written?
//The simple answer is because it's easily the most outdated arc of the story.
//For those who haven't seen the beginning of this blog, this was before I came up with the structure that I currently have, and suffice to say, the plot of the first arc was rushed, and didn't really explain ANYTHING. It was just a quickly fumbled together introduction with no real characterization.
//Basically, all it was designed to do was drop Shuichi and his friends into the world, and it didn't have much of a story besides that.
//The reason why I'm rewriting Trouble's Brewing, and making it from scratch, is to take that plot, and actually make a full-length story arc for it, instead of a few quick posts that were hastily scrapped together, and uncomfortably bad compared to my current writing.
//Now, normally, I really hate the idea of going back and recreating work that I've already made, but in this case, I have more than one good reason for doing so. Considering he's still a key player in the story, it's also the first chance I have to actually use Kuripa's new sprites as part of the story, as well as to give a little more early characterization to some characters who severely needed it in preparation for future arcs.
2 - Will the new arc change the overall direction of the story?
//Yes, but not massively.
//The general plot of the arc will be the same. It will generally be set up to explain the world, the current state of the Future Foundation, as well as introduce the V3 kids into the fray, and the OC's like Kuripa.
//All this is is me taking that original story, and expanding it into something full fledged, like all the current arcs do.
3 - Are key characters being changed or removed?
//I'm sure a lot of people are wondering this, and the answer is yes.
//Because this takes place at the very beginning of the story, the following characters, who only appear in later arcs, will not be featured: Junko Chiaki Alter Ego Junko Kizakura Munakata Yukizome Kaede Ryoma Kirumi Angie Tenko Miu Kaito Kokichi Tsumugi Keebo Gonta Rantaro Kiyo Monaca Yuta Taichi Sora Mikako Teruya Setsuka Iroha Syobai Mikado Kanata Kanade Akane Taira Ando Hibiki Yamato Akeru Mikihiko Yosaku Kana Misako Kanjiro Seina Shozo Ryo Akira Narumi Misuzu Eloise Taulner Kibin Karma Matta Tsutsuji Ella Hanami Mii-Yu Mona Eden Maya Four Hunter Kouji Leona Oliver Yomi Yui Kanon Natsumi Kuroba Solana
//And a few other characters on top of that. Just...anybody who was not present prior to the first arc, so most of the V3 characters, sans Shuichi, Maki, and Himiko
//However there are also characters that will be coming back for the arc, namely Hajime, Yukari, and regular Himiko.
4 - How will the asks function? Will there be any for this arc?
//To make it easier on myself, no. But I will not be closing the box during the duration.
//Asks will be asked in the context of where the story is currently. Because it's a rewrite, I want Trouble's Brewing to be entirely story.
//After all, there's not much point in asking questions when most people already know the current plot developments. There isn't much potential for questions when the reset button gets hit.
5 - How different will the rewritten arc be from the original?
//As I said before, the basic plot is the same, but it's been expanded to include more character moments, story beats, and just...plot in general. Below, I've included some of the important considerations for those looking forward to it:
The main characters of the arc are the Branch 14 trio, i.e. Makoto, Mukuro, and Kuripa.
As teased in the title though, all the main protagonists (with the exception of Kaede, who is not present at this point in the story) will play significant roles in the plot, Shuichi especially.
Yukari Koime will be the main antagonist of the arc. The reason is because I feel that her introduction in Neo World was a bit too bare bones for how important she is throughout Phases 1 and 2, and I wanted more of a chance to have her be the main antagonist.
The big key difference of this arc, compared to the original, is that Maki and Himiko don't just show up as easily as Shuichi does. Like in the original Trouble's Brewing, Shuichi will appear through a wormhole and arrive on Jabberwock Island, but unlike their rushed arrival in the original arc, the main plot of this new arc will involve the Future Foundation tracking down and rescuing Maki and Himiko, to help reunite them with Shuichi. Effectively, it;'s something of a Saving Private Ryan kind of story.
6 - Will we see new scenes or characters?
//Yes, and yes.
//Although, for whatever new characters we DO add to this, don't expect them to stick around for the rest of the story. We need to kind of retain the canonicity, and it doesn't make sense for new characters to appear, and then not be present for the rest of the story.
//The new scenes are designed to better establish the current state of the world 8 years after DR3, and to establish the new characters, like Kuripa and Mukuro, although they don't have their current development, of course.
7 - Can we still access the original version?
//Yes, of course, it should hopefully still be up. But the whole premise of this is to improve the first part of the story, so hopefully, you won't need, nor want to after this.
8 - Will the themes or tone of the story change?
//I can't say for certain, but if they do, it'll likely be to better elaborate and improve upon the general themes of Survivor as a whole, so that new readers can get better acquainted with the premise.
//I think for now, that's it. If there are any other questions about this, please ask me, and I will answer as best I can.

[Reader] looked at Hitsujirō laughing. There was something familiar about the sound. At first, she couldn't even place what it was. When it finally sunk in, she felt a weight around her heart. Sōta's grandfather had the exact same laugh as his grandson. It spread throughout the hospital room like a beam of bright light in a dark room but there was a bitter note to it. Like he never believed his descendant could do anything right and the fact that disaster had finally struck was to be laughed at.
— That's not funny! — she shouted reproachfully.
She felt hot tears dripping down her cheeks. The ones that had been building up for two weeks. She was beginning to understand why Sōta rarely visited his grandfather. Defending himself against him with his hands and feet suddenly made sense. He was a great charmer but not a very good family man.
Tumblr media
She remembered the first time she had met Munakata well. He had been a teenager then. Not exactly skilled in the art of closing doors. If they had been placed side by side, it would have been obvious that [Reader] had had the more experience.
She had never been to Tottori before. Tired from the long journey, she believed she would have time to rest. Her family had even booked her a comfortable guesthouse. But when the familiar red streaks appeared on the horizon, she knew she wouldn't have it. The black dust particles in the air stank of destruction. They smelled of fresh earth and death.
By the time she got there, the giant earthworm was already writhing upwards. As always, it was preparing to fall. Bringing with it an earthquake and claiming hundreds of lives. [Reader] was genuinely surprised by the presence of another. Her entire immediate family were Closers. Although they had never ruled out the possibility that there were more like them, she had never met any. That was why the sight of Sōta was shocking.
It was the first time in her life that she had found herself gasping for breath. It was pretty crazy. After all, she was running through deserted, dry rice fields, straight towards danger. And yet, all she saw in Munakata was peace. And even though the silo door refused to budge, he faced it. Step by step, fighting the overwhelming force of the abyss.
She reached the door, bracing her legs with all her strength. When the door swayed slightly, she knew it would all be over in a moment.
Long, black hair tossed by the force of a hurricane hid the boy's face. At that time, she didn't know that behind them were hidden blue irises, reminiscent of endless lakes on a clear day. In his hand, a golden key gleamed. The same one that he had with great difficulty inserted into the materialized lock.
— O Great Gods who rule beneath the earth, you who have protected humanity for generations...— the teenager shouted over the wind.
[Reader] looked out at the parched fields. In her mind, she saw the place as it had been in the old days. Green. Partially submerged in water. She stood among the hard-working people, putting rice seedlings in place. She tilted her hat, responding to the greetings of her neighbours. She was taking a break to eat a simple lunch with her family.
She could smell the rain and feel the warmth of the sun on her face. The coolness as she dipped her feet into the slowly flowing water. The laughter of children playing surrounded her on all sides. She could almost touch the face of the old woman who was teaching her how to harvest.
In a split second, there was dead silence and darkness. This was once a place full of life. Before the inhabitants decided to leave. Like many others in Japan.
No matter how many times she did it, she could never get used to it. It was like saying goodbye to lives she had never known. She could only see fragments and she wanted to know them all. Because forgetting was like admitting that a place had long since died.
— Your mountains and rivers that we have long called our own... I return them to you! — the girl finished, turning the key.
— I didn't know anyone else could close doors — the boy said in surprise. — Anyway, thanks for the help. — The voice seemed to echo in the silence that fell after the hurricane had passed.
— I had no idea either — [Reader] admitted.
— Munakata Sōta. — He bowed politely.
Tumblr media
The girl should have expected it to end like this. She overslept because she closed the door far from Tokyo late at night and the train back was terribly late. Now, half asleep, she rushed out of the apartment. Luckily, Serizawa was never on time anywhere, so for once he could help her get to the other end of town. She checked one last time to make sure she had everything in her bag. She hadn't had time to eat anything in the morning but the driver had promised her she wouldn't be hungry.
— You and your definition of breakfast — she moaned ostentatiously.
— I never said it was a healthy breakfast. — Serizawa grinned.
He handed her a can of energy drink, which she accepted with quiet resignation. That's how it all starts. You eat anything and then you stop eating breakfast altogether. A future teacher should introduce healthy eating habits. Meanwhile, he was setting the exact opposite example.
She got into the car and fastened her seatbelt. As usual, the boy was in no hurry. He looked wonderfully rested. He reverently pressed the radio button. Ever since he bought his red car, he had become unbearably obsessed with it. Every friend had to look at it. Everyone around knew its technical specifications by heart. They had no choice.
— It's So Fly-Day, Fly-Day China Town! — came from the loudspeaker.
The girl moved her hand towards the smartphone hanging on the holder. She was slapped hard on the hands when she was about to change the song. There were no other songs than those from the sacred playlists. The 80s and 90s were the regions that had always ruled Serizawa's heart. And it was probably going to stay that way.
The student started singing loudly, so she turned off her brain while sipping an energy drink. It was getting ready to rain. Heavy clouds hung over the streets of Tokyo. They were reflected in the transparent skyscrapers of the city center. The traffic jam gave her a chance to admire the bright red light blocking their chance to pass another street. As if to spite them, a car full of young people was parked next to them. The gang started to make fun of the loud singing. They looked like truants. Serizawa got into a lively discussion with them, during which, among other things, many words were exchanged about mothers...
— So, how's it going? — asked the boy, stepping on the gas.
— You can see where we are going.
Oh yeah. Playing dumb was definitely a good idea.
— Don’t pretend. — Serizawa looked at her suggestively over his glasses.
— Nothing's moved on except for that traffic jam. End of story — [Reader] said.
The silence didn't last long. The driver had lost interest in the singing. Now he was interested in one thing, one thing only. She knew he wouldn't let up until he got to the heart of the matter.
— Why didn't you tell him? — Only silence answered him. — If you don't tell me, I'll be driving forty an hour and you'll never make it. — He smiled maliciously.
— Oh yeah? Bad luck. I've prepared myself. It looks like it's starting to rain. Since the sunroof is still broken, I've brought an umbrella. Time to put it up.
[Reader] did indeed pull an umbrella out of her purse. It looked ridiculous, to say the least. A red sports car and above it a colourful umbrella. It didn't help much because raindrops were still falling on their faces but at least the tops of their heads were dry.
— What are you doing? HEY! Put that away this instant. You'll scare all the chicks when we get there!
Well, yes. Because the girls will definitely be standing in the parking lot in the pouring rain. Seeing such a car, splashing water left and right, must have been the height of their dreams.
The girl stubbornly held her hand up. The puddles were getting bigger, the drops were getting heavier. The sounds of songs mixed with the sound of rain. Passersby looked at them like they were crazy, rushing to hide in nearby shops and at bus stops.
— Where are you going? — the girl asked, feeling a growing sense of unease.
This was definitely not a path familiar to her.
— I can't show up like this, so we'll do circles until you come to your senses. It's my new teaching method — Serizawa said.
— I hope they don’t put any children in your care — [Reader] said.
They went in circles like two hamsters in a wheel. The fuel wasn't cheap and the passenger wondered how many more kilometers they would do before the driver broke.
The wet pavements sparkled, reflecting the light of billboards of famous brands. The few trees planted along the street bent under the pressure of the water. They seemed to shake off all the drops. The air smelled of damp. It was stuffy and heavy, announcing that it was just a passing downpour and would soon give way to the sun.
— Then why is the matter still at a standstill? — Serizawa asked again.
— You’re such a pain in the ass! — [Reader] tucked away her umbrella, letting the downpour get to them. — Okay, if you’re so keen, then this is on hold because I chickened out. Are you happy? — She rested her head on her elbow.
The boy sighed but turned back onto the right route.
— What are you afraid of? The friendzone? You two are obviously drawn to each other — Serizawa said.
It was true. The subtle touches of hands. The shy smiles during compliments. The seemingly friendly hugs. They spent a lot of time together. Definitely more than just friends. From the day she first met Munakata, she knew he would be more to her. But when it came time to take the relationship forward, she didn't have the courage.
— He's the only one who really understands me. If we don't work out, I'll lose him — she muttered.
In fact, it was like that. Sōta was the only person outside of her family who understood her as a Closer. He saw the world a little differently than everyone else. He suffered from the same problems and difficulties. Which made it easy for them to help each other and even easier to bond. But for the same reason, she felt that losing him would hurt just as much.
— If it doesn't work out, you can...
—…be friends? — [Reader] interrupted him. — You don’t really believe that, do you?
After a moment's thought, the boy nodded.
— Just don’t wait too long — Serizawa said as he pulled into the parking lot.
Tumblr media
— [Reader], heeeey, [Reader]! — The woman behind the counter waved energetically.
The girl preferred to avoid unnecessary confrontation and go upstairs straight away but she had no choice. She sighed quietly and looked into the shop. She was always cursing Munakata for choosing to live in this district. It was in Tokyo. It should have screamed anonymity. Meanwhile, here, everyone knew everyone and knew everything about them. In addition, downstairs, there was a 24-hour shop run by two elderly women and a student her age. It was like a high-class neighbourhood surveillance system. Unfortunately, it couldn't be turned off at will. And sometimes it would come in handy. Especially since each of the employees absolutely adored Sōta and followed his movements as much as they could. Did he buy in a different shop? Next time, they'd accuse him of not getting a discount again or deliberately announce that the goods were out of stock. Did he bring [Reader]? They'd ask her right away if she was his girlfriend because they themselves had granddaughters who would be interested in a potential beau. Are they rushing somewhere with Munakata? Not anymore! Time for some new gossip from the neighbourhood...
— Good morning — the girl greeted, not very enthusiastically.
She felt that the first question today would be: Where is…
— Where is our little Sōta? — Auntie blurted out straight away.
[Reader] didn't even try to point out that calling a twenty-two-year-old tall man little made no sense.
— I have no idea — she admitted honestly.
She had been trying to figure it out for days, tearing her hair out. Munakata had only sent one short message. He hadn't responded to any texts or returned any calls. His social media was dead, too. She didn't know where he had gone this time. They didn't always keep each other updated on where they were closing the doors. Now she was regretting it. He had disappeared without contact before but never for this long.
Auntie started talking about how the street renovation started across the street. Then about some white cat that was winning the hearts of all the internet users ([Reader] was almost certain that it was a student who was working part-time who had to show it to her). Then she moved on to how irresponsible these young people are, travelling at such a young age…
— About those awful young people — [Reader] chimed in. — I heard Sōta’s cousin was staying at his apartment.
— I gave her a spare key. — The woman waved her hand dismissively. — A bit scatterbrained, not like our Sōta...
— Exactly — [Reader] agreed, nodding vehemently. — Which is exactly why I need to check on her. — With that, she ran out of the store before her aunt could find a new topic of conversation.
The way up was familiar. She took the steps two at a time, running up the stairs.
She knocked on the door as hard as she could. There was a dull silence. She knocked again.
— I'm [Reader]! Serizawa told me you came and that you're Sōta's cousin.
There was a moment of silence, after which increasingly louder footsteps could be heard. A young girl appeared behind the door. The teenager hurriedly invited [Reader] inside. She bowed low, waving her dark ponytail.
She had to admit that, despite her aunt's words, the girl probably had some common sense. After all, she didn't open the door to a stranger on the spot.
— My name is Iwato Suzume, [Reader]-san. — She bowed.
— There's no need to be so formal. We're about the same age — the woman reassured her, seeing how uncertainly the girl was moving around.
[Reader] took a seat on a small sofa. The apartment was tiny but she liked it. It reminded her of a library of old books about Closers that she never wanted to read. Of piles of pedagogy textbooks that Munakata loved to study from cover to cover. Of a worn-out carpet with funny patterns, stained with soy sauce. Of a broken light bulb that the owner refused to replace, which meant that they always sat in semi-darkness in the evenings. Of the smell of freshly brewed coffee and men's perfume. This apartment was simply Sōta. She didn't know if it was her profession that required her to associate places with people. Maybe it was partly so. But now she was certain that being here, she felt the lack of a man more strongly than before.
— So… um… can I ask… I mean, what brings you here?
The teenager didn't seem comfortable with using just her first name.
— Serizawa probably told you the same thing but I'm looking for Sōta.
— I swear I don't know where he is — the girl said.
She admitted it a little too quickly for [Reader's] taste. But then again, seeing as she was struggling, she figured maybe she was just uncomfortable around a stranger.
Especially since Serizawa was the first person she had met that afternoon. Deep down, he had a good heart but he definitely didn't win at first meeting. He was loud. He always demanded what he wanted. There was an indescribable, cheerful chaos about him. He smelled of cigarettes, despite the fact that he had proclaimed that as a future teacher, he would "smash" anyone who tried to light one under his nose. He was also followed by the smell of fuel, which he poured gallons into his beloved, sleek car. The colour was as red as his temperament. If it was him that Suzume had seen first, it was no wonder she hadn't been of much help.
— I understand but... I was hoping you might know something. He hasn't been here in a while. You must have contacted him somehow to come.
— I didn't make arrangements to meet him beforehand. I was in the area and needed to rest for a while. I knew to pick up the keys downstairs if anything happened. That's all.
The woman felt her hope drain away.
— Oh... I won't bother you then. — She started to leave.
— Miss… I mean… are you very worried about Sōta-san? — Suzume looked at her with a sincere and penetrating gaze.
— We had a fight before he left.
[Reader] thought back to their last conversation. They hadn't parted on very good terms then. Hopeless, even. There were rarely any tensions between them. Both were rather calm people. However, in the work of Closers, risk always followed them. Because abandoned places were rarely safe. Deserted houses, ruins and flooded areas were not such a big problem in themselves but the earthworm dragged destruction with it. Wherever doors opened, there was the stench of death. Passages not closed in time heralded earthquakes. How long were they supposed to do this? Until the end of their strength? [Reader] couldn't plan anything in her life because duty was always following her. A secret she couldn't talk about. What once seemed like an adventure had become tedious. How much more suffering was she supposed to watch, inserting the key into countless locks?
Munakata didn't share her opinion. For him, everything was a noble privilege. So much so that he considered it his sacred duty to close the passages. [Reader] often wondered if this point of view had been instilled in him by his grandfather. It wasn't until she met Hitsujirō later that she understood that it was definitely not like that. Sōta simply didn't want to leave people in need and felt that there weren't many people who could replace him. No matter how many old memories of houses, shopping malls, bars, amusement parks or shrines he had to watch.
And, although he understood why the woman wanted to escape from this, he himself was not going to do it. He did not want to be convinced that it might be worth finding other people who could help and in time leave everything in their hands. He argued that no one would be able to see the earthworm. And exposing anyone to the sight of the abyss was too dangerous.
There were a few bitter words. The woman tried to recreate the conversation in her head many times but for the life of her, she couldn't remember them. All that remained in her memory was the disappointed look on Munakata's face in the dimly lit apartment. His hunched shoulders and how quickly he turned his head away. Perhaps so she wouldn't see that he was angry. Or maybe he just didn't want to show any tears. She had never seen him cry but this might have been the first time.
That evening, she stubbornly stared at her phone, fighting with herself not to call. She also secretly hoped that a picture of the man would appear on the screen. But nothing of the sort happened. And when she decided to write the next day, she got no reply. After a while, all she got was a dry text message saying:
I'm fine. Everything is okay.
It didn't sound like something that people who really had nothing going on would write. And Serizawa hadn't received any information. Munakata hadn't shown up for class and today he'd missed the exam to become a teacher. Something he'd been working towards for so long.
— Before he left... I said a few things that I now regret. It's normal to care about someone you love, right? — [Reader] rubbed her temple.
Well. She finally admitted it out loud in Sōta's apartment. Too bad it was under these circumstances. Even if his cousin had to tell him, it wasn't that important anymore. She just wanted to see him safe and sound.
— O-of course — the girl stuttered.
Her gaze went to a chair. Painted yellow, with only three legs. A strange little piece of furniture leaning against a stack of books, which had tipped over awkwardly with a noise.
— I've never seen it here. Maybe it's a college project.
It would make sense. Some of the work done for classes with the youngest sometimes took on strange, artistic forms.
She couldn't tell what made her approach the chair. When she touched it, it felt warm. Two holes carved into the wood seemed to stare at her like eyes. Quite familiar, blue in colour. She blinked a few times. The longing seemed to be slowly starting to overwhelm her.
— It’s mine — Iwato said, picking up the piece of furniture.
[Reader] nodded.
— If you have any contact with Sōta, please tell him to reach out — the woman asked, grabbing the door handle.
— [Reader]?
— Yes?
— I'm sure he's fine and you'll see each other soon...
Tumblr media
— That little… what was her name? Suzume… I told her to leave it alone but she said she'd get him out.
So, she wasn't a cousin. And she knew exactly where Sōta was.
— How does she want to…? — The unspoken question hung in the air. — Never mind. I just need to know where she is now. I'll find her. No matter what I have to do. —  With that, [Reader] slammed the hospital door shut.
The idiot Serizawa was right. She had waited too long to confess her feelings. And now Sōta was stuck somewhere in the abyss, all alone. She had to find him and get him out. And then she would tell him everything and there would be no more ambiguities. Ever again.

[Gakuen K] Munakata Reisi Route Translation
Assisting the President of the Student Council Office
Tumblr media
LIST OF CHAPTERS
[Translation under the cut]
Tumblr media
Saya: --This is a program list for the school festival.
Munakata: Thank you. Next, please put together the applications for permission to use the classrooms there.
Saya: Okay, understood.
*A few moments later*
Saya: I put together the applications.
Munakata: Thank you. Next, please create a timetable for the event hall and the sports ground.
Munakata: I think we can use last year's data, could you please check?
Saya: I got it.
Munakata: When you are done with that, could you please deliver the documents to Awashima-sensei?
Saya: Okay.
*Many hours later...*
Saya: (Whoa…It's already dark outside)
Awashima: Huh, I was thinking about the lights being on…I see the President is still working, right?
Munakata: I have a lot of things that need to be done today, so it will take a little bit longer.
Awashima: That's so…Please be careful not to push yourselves too hard, both of you.
Munakata: Thanks for your concern.
Munakata: We hope to announce all the details at the end of the week.
Awashima: Understood. Well, I'll leave the key to you, so could you please lock the door?
Munakata: Got it. …Excuse me, Awashima-sensei.
Awashima: Yeah, what is it?
Munakata: Could you please sign this? I have some documents that I'd like you to look over.
Awashima: Understood. I'll verify them.
Awashima: Is that all?
Munakata: Yeah, thank you. Sorry for holding you back.
Awashima: It's fine. It's dark outside, please be careful going home.
Saya: Okay, thank you.
Munakata: Well, let's get back to work, shall we? We have a list of equipment needed, so please take a look at it and prepare the application.
Saya: Okay, understood. Um, how much longer are we going to work today?
Munakata: Until the end of today's work.
Saya: U-Understood!
Saya: (Let's do our best to finish it as soon as possible!)
Munakata: Could it be that you had plans?
Saya: No, it's not a big deal, don't worry.
Saya: (I can't tell him there was a TV show I wanted to watch…Work comes first!)
Munakata: I see. Sorry to keep you up late.
Saya: No! It's just that my work is taking too much time. I'll try to do it more efficiently.
Munakata: You are doing your best. It is inevitable because of the amount of work you had to do in the first place.
Saya: Senpai…Thank you.
Munakata: It's already dark, I'll walk you back to your dormitory when it's time to go home.
Munakata: But I don't know if I can finish before the date changes…Though I think it's just barely manageable.
Saya: Is it really going to take that long?
Munakata: …Or should we just stay the night?
Saya: Eh…?
Saya: (Stay the night, just the two of us?)
Munakata: Right, tomorrow is Saturday, and I have permission to use the student council chambers all weekend long.
Munakata: And we can proceed without losing time in getting here from the dormitory.
Munakata: If we work together until tomorrow morning, we'll certainly finish it.
Tumblr media
Choice: Understood ❤︎
Saya: U-Understood. Let's work hard all night today!!
Munakata: Oya, you are very motivated.
Saya: Yeah! I learned from senpai before.
Munakata: …? What's that?
Saya: Senpai said that if you put things off until later, you'll find yourself in trouble later, so I decided to follow your example.
Saya: So I want to finish it first.
Munakata: You…really remembered that, didn't you?
Saya: Oh, but I didn't bring a toothbrush or a towel for washing my face…The store is closed, right?
Tumblr media
Choice: Staying night is a bit…
Saya: I think that's true, but staying the night here is a bit too much…
Saya: (That means I and Munakata-senpai have to sleep together here…)
Munakata: I see…I thought it would be more efficient if we could alternate sleep and not lose any time for meetings.
Saya: (Senpai told me before that it's not good to put off work, so I guess I should stay the night)
Saya: I-I got it. I'm staying!
Tumblr media
Munakata: Hah…You don't have to make that face. It's all a joke. I think the day will be over soon.
Saya: Eh! Is that so? Could it be that "barely manageable" is also a joke…?
Munakata: I mean, that I almost managed with it.
Saya: (I wonder if he was making fun of me…?)
Munakata: Now, let's focus on the last spurt, shall we?

Cipher Academy ch.58 thoughts
[Thank You For Playing]
(Contents: Reflection)
I think it's pretty clear from this chapter that Nisio had a lot of other storylines planned, though I'm not sure how much attention each one would have gotten
Toshusai's mission to round up the Gun Eyes, Yosaimura's mission to dredge up the Unsinkable Aircraft Carrier, and of course Iroha's mission to save the Battlefield Dancer, all could well have been their own story arcs, but it's also possible that all but the latter would have been background events. Regardless, Nisio is telegraphing that there was more story to tell, and that we'll need to fill in the blanks on our own at this point
In a certain sense, I appreciate that Nisio is showing me what could have been. Being given breadcrumbs even after the story's conclusion allows me to continue creating the story in my heart, even if the canon is beyond my reach now. To borrow Nisio's wording, it feels less like the story has ended and more like it's stopped
Endings usually come in one of two flavors - wrap-ups or "our journey continues," but this one kind of feels like both in a way. It's demonstrating how the previous storylines wrapped up, but while also showing what new journeys started since then and which were never completed. It's a bit more realistic in that way, as people's lives aren't stories that can be bound neatly in the narrative of a book
That said, this is still a story, and some elements do need to be presented neatly. With the story concluding with every class working as a unit, I think it's fair to say that my take that this was, at its core, a Friendship story was correct. I wonder if perhaps every first-year class was made to treat the other classes as enemies or rivals specifically to build up to the point where they would be allies later? It would make sense for a military academy to lean into basic team-building structure like that, as the stages go as follows: Forming, Storming, Norming, and Performing. Every class is built from strangers, they're put at odds with each other to become acquainted, their dynamics normalize, and then they can operate efficiently with that familiarity. It makes sense for this to be repeated at every level, from intra- to inter-class relationships, and possibly even inter-school relations. In the end, I do wish that we could have spent more time exploring those relationships, as they were easily the most engaging part of this narrative
Oddly, the most reassuring thing about this ending was that it kind of gave me closure to a question I've had for over a decade now: was Medaka Box canceled? Based on this ending, I'm inclined to say no. There are so many parallels between these two endings - the timeskip, the where-are-they-now, the final shot of a group photo, the literal credits sequence. It was all so familiar that I recognized it pretty much immediately, but there was one key difference: while Medaka Box took us through the goings-on of the entire casts' lives, very little of it felt like story that could have drawn out the series' lifespan. I mean, sure, it could have, but none of it felt like it was meant to be story that we would have seen directly. It was everyone catching up and talking about what they've heard their friends have been up to, but with the exception of Munakata becoming an exorcist when ghosts or demons haven't been an established concept up to this point, all of it was just "oh, she's a baker now, he's a cop now, he's a politician now, she's a calligrapher now," etc. None of it was of any real consequence to the lives of the cast, it was just flavor text to reminisce on the events of the story and how far everyone has come
Here, I feel like we could have seen all of it and it would have been engaging. We're not just touching base with old friends here, we're waking up from a coma and learning that we missed all of the fun. It's such a vastly different feeling that I can't help but feel like this is how it would have felt if Medaka Box were canceled, therefore it most likely wasn't
I'm sure I could come up with more to wax poetic on with this series, but to be honest, I'm getting exhausted here. It's heartbreaking seeing one of my favorites get cut down like this, and as some of you may have heard, Martial Master Asumi has been canceled as well. I don't want to harp on this for much longer and make myself sadder, so I'll conclude on as positive a note as I can
I had a great time writing about this series. Being able to explore shonen tropes through Nisio's lens is always a delight and a bit of a trip, and getting the chance to share that experience with others was great fun. Iwasaki's art was fantastic, as evidenced by how many of these girls I absolutely fell in love with, and I'm glad I got to see so many parallels to Akira Akatsuki's style. I actually have to wonder if the styles of both series were directed by Nisio's vision or if perhaps Iwasaki is a fan of Akatsuki. Either way, this last year has given me the opportunity to relive my time with Medaka Box while also giving me something completely new at the same time. I'm so grateful that Nisio and Iwasaki at least got to make it this far, and I hope that we'll get to see both of them again in the near future
To everyone who read all 58 of my reviews for this series, thank you so much. To everyone who only read a few here and there, or even only read this one, thank you as well. I'm glad I got to spend time with you and I hope my little essays enriched your experience, even a little
Until next time

Danganronpa 3 Despair arc episode 6.
Thonks.
Hajime having a flashback while describing what happened.
Oh boy.
Confirms he was supposed to be the Ultimate Hope.
"All traces off previous personality deleted."
You got that wrong... But for now you're right.
They really couldn't have cut his hair, like the whole time.
Chiaki asking Chisa how Hajime is, because she taught at the Reserve Course.
And Chisa lying to her.
Ouch.
I love how Ibuki is sus of Peko and Fuyuhiko's "sudden friendship."
And kicking Teruteru for getting perverted.
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Few things are as Gundam Tanaka as Gundam calling a bunny a bringer of Calamity.
And than comforting said bunny and calling it BunBun.
So sweet.
Chisa got a hold of a key card from Juzo.
... Why would you want to live for Munakata's ideals?
Or die for him.
... Why?
Juzo saying he wouldn't hesitate to die for Chisa.
Unexpected, but I don't think it's jealously. Even with the close up of his fist.
They all were friends, he took her death hard, makes sense.
... Or maybe he is jealous of being a third wheel to Chisa and Munakata.
He cares a lot for both of them. It must be hard when you know both of your friends are in love.
And you're just here.
I don't like the guy but I can sympathise.
Aaaannnd Nagito is still missing.
Chisa your disguise kinda sucks but sure, breaking in.
Close the door!
Wait someone vanished?
Of course it was Junko's fault.
Junko that's curry... Not soup. I guess it doesn't matter if either way it's ending up in an eye.
Gotta love Junko talking about how great normal everyday things are for torture.
And knowing she'll some of the most elaborate executions known to man.
Imagine Danganronpa 1 but the executions are just torture via household objects and food.
... Actually don't that sounds terrifying.
The Kamakura project description...
Why does hearing about it with professional jargon make it sound so much worse?
And it's already fucked.
So Izuru has all known talents, and the trade off was losing his personality and his memories.
... Fuck.
And naturally Junko knows, somehow.
So she and Mukuro are off to meet him.
Idk why I'm suprised that Junko casually had an eyeball on her.
But did it need to be on the stick of the food your eating?
The fated meeting between Junko and Izuru.
Funny thing about Munakata being against the Kamakura project is that he basically becomes his own Izuru Kamakura.
A despair disguised under the flag of hope.
I love how he's like what if Izuru Kamakura turned against us.
Yeah that'd be awful... 👀
Annnd Izuru takes down both Junko and Mukuro.
Man has all talents.
I do like that he still sounds like Hajime.
So much more soul crushing.
The thing is Junko and Izuru are intellectual equals.
But Junko has the upper hand.
Izuru doesn't see Junko as a threat, she's able to fool him and implant the seeds of wanting despair in him.
She knows his situation better than anyone, because he knows all the outcomes and so does she.
She's bored and knows he is too.
And uses that in her favour.
Ayy Ryota's okay.
Twogami saying he's going to keep going to the hospital till he's got a clean bill of health.
Which is sweet.
And Junko in the infirmary.
Makes sense that Mukuro doesn't like Izuru, especially cos he injured Junko and Junko's fangirling over him.
Butt for Junko I'm sure she'll go with it.
"When she wakes up, tell her I'll be waiting."
Looks like the seeds been planted.
I say seeds like it was done all sneaky and cryptic but girl just despair speeched him.
And it worked.
I'd say Junko has issues but we all knew that.
Huh, didn't know Junko had a spidey sense.
And cornered, Ryota of all people.
Wasn't who I expected her to grab first... Especially because Ryota didn't become a despair.
But that doesn't mean he escaped her grasp.
... Few ever do.

Reisi Munakata
Tumblr media
At a first glance Munakata is the poster boy for Scepter 4 in terms of his look, proper uniform and all but a further glance into his design reveals key aspects of his character. Let’s start with just his Scepter 4 outfit in general. Despite being one of three most important characters in the organization that the series focuses on he doesn’t have much deviation in his outfit the way Awashima and Fushimi do. I like to think this is intentional. He is supposed to represent Scepter 4 as its leader and king of the blue clan. The role this puts him in gives him comfort and purpose. But look at his neck. Unlike other characters he wears a cravat, possibly as a nod to the styles of aristocracy or royalty. But also think about how a cravat fits. It’s right around one’s neck, possibly symbolizing that while Munakata takes comfort in his role, it also serves as a detriment to him and his growth as a person.

Note
In regard to the email itself, there seems to be somewhat of a red flag with how it casually mentions the Elite Task Force being sent over to Jabberwock Island. IIRC, the only people who are authorised to use them are Munakata himself and Tengan and with how they’re usually kept under lock and key outside of extreme circumstances, it seems like whoever sent it must be someone who has close ties to Munakata himself.
Tumblr media
Yeah that does limit the potential people it can be quite a bit. And that's what's scaring me...
Tumblr media
I'm back...
Tumblr media
Hey. How's Kotoko feeling?
Tumblr media
Fine, I think... Are we still looking for stuff?
Tumblr media
Just about. Aside from the stuff on the laptop, everything here is pretty self-explanatory. A factory that makes robots.
Tumblr media
What about this big TV?
Tumblr media
What big TV-
Tumblr media
That one. *Jataro points to a certain big screen by one of the belts*
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oh! How did we miss that?
Tumblr media
The hell is this? It looks like Monokuma. What, is Monaca getting into the show business now?
Tumblr media
Hmmm... *Kurumi begins inspecting it...*
Tumblr media
Hey, check this out! There's a small compartment right under the mouth.
Tumblr media
Zoinks! It opened! Can you reach into its belly?
Tumblr media
Not how that works and...there's really nothing inside here, I can barely fit my hand in here. It looks like this is meant to store something.
Tumblr media
Ugh, another intricate design by wack-job inventors for their products.
[Monitors updated in the Truth Bullets Section]
Tumblr media
I found these papers too. Are they important? *Jataro holds three big rolls of paper in his arms*
Tumblr media
Let me see.... *Touko takes them...*
Tumblr media
Just as I figured, these are blueprints of some kind...
Tumblr media
Blueprints of what?
Tumblr media
It looks like one's for the screen we just saw. One is for...some sort of knife? And another for some wrist band type of device.
Tumblr media
I think this is what we were told that Makoto and the others had to wear. For their forbidden actions, I think it was called. I can't make heads or tails of all the details written here though...
[Blueprints added to the Truth Bullets Section]
Tumblr media
That...should do it for around here...

Meanwhile!
Time: 8:10 PM
Location: Towa City
Tumblr media
*standing at the door, Kyosuke standing at the door* Where are they...?
Tumblr media
They say they'll be arriving soon sir...
Tumblr media
I hope so, we don't really have a lot of time.
Tumblr media
If anything, this shit is driving me up the wall.
Tumblr media
Look, can we beat the shit outta him already? I'm getting tired of waiting!
Tumblr media
Look, ca-can we just wait a second before we jump to beating them up, they'll arrive - I know they will!
Tumblr media
Toko is correct, given the distant between Jabberwock Island and Towa City; it would take sometime but they'll make it.
Tumblr media
I hope so...
MASUYO: Hey uh, we arrive - sorry we took so long!
Tumblr media
Ah... seems Masuyo arrive, good now we can-.
*As the door opens, Masuyo along with some others are here...*
Tumblr media
Hello everyone, sorry we are late - just had to bring some company.
Tumblr media
...
Tumblr media
...
Tumblr media
...
Tumblr media
...
Tumblr media
...Uh, he-hey there... sorry for intruding...
Tumblr media
Th-The Despairs are here!
Tumblr media
What?! The Remanats of Despairs, here?! You brought along the enemy!
Tumblr media
Oh great, these assholes are here!
Tumblr media
You better explain yourself right this instant, despair scum!
Tumblr media
...!
Tumblr media
Ye-Yeah don't worry, we aren't here to cause any trouble; were here to help!
Tumblr media
Whoa hey, drop the sword man!
Tumblr media
Ex-Exactly, we came to assist Masuyo with this; you have to believe what we say!
Tumblr media
Exactly, we aren't here as your enemy but instead your allies!
Tumblr media
Ye-Yeah guys, look they aren't here to do anything; they came to help me that's all!
Tumblr media
Really... they are here to help us, huh? Are you sure they won't try to help that bastard Kota, I sure like to hear it.
Tumblr media
We-Well...you see...
Tumblr media
... (I guess it should be expected, they don't trust us but it's understandable...)

1/3) AU. The aristocratic magician Fushimi receives an official letter informing him that he is engaged to the daughter of an aristocrat. Fushimi asks the bandit Yata to take a break from their relationship (not to advertise it outside their home) while he finds a way to get rid of the stupid engagement. He casually says that idiots used to solve such problems with a duel, fortunately the aristocracy refused such a bloody solution to problems.
Tumblr media
Fushimi was busy using all his contacts to gather some gold and just pay Douhan off to cancel the engagement and meanwhile Yata had to go do something stupid in the meantime XD Imagine Fushimi as this aristocrat who inherited lands from his shitty parents along with his magic, he hates it but at least this allows him to live easily. Bandit Yata is his childhood friend, as kids Fushimi ran away from the castle with Yata and lived with the bandits for a while until neighboring aristocrat Munakata helped topple Niki’s reign of terror and Fushimi was restored to the rightful owner of the castle. He and Yata maybe had some falling out for a while but they’ve since reconciled, Yata will sneak into the castle all the time to see Fushimi. They’re carrying on like a low-key romantic relationship but say it’s still a little tentative, like they’ve kissed and Yata confessed and Fushimi managed a stumbling reply but they’re still working through this whole ‘friends to lovers’ thing.
One day Fushimi receives a letter from the King Kokujouji, who has decided that Fushimi will enter into a political marriage with Lady Douhan of the neighboring kingdom of jungle. Yata’s immediately crestfallen when he hears this, like part of him had almost forgotten that Fushimi’s an aristocrat and that he would be expected to marry well, and what can a bandit like Yata offer him. It doesn’t help that Fushimi seems much less concerned about this than Yata is, just clicking his tongue and telling Yata not to come by the castle for a couple weeks while Fushimi ‘sorts this out.’ Fushimi is of course already thinking of ways to get out of this but he’s not the best with emotions so he doesn’t even entirely notice that Yata’s distraught, he’s far more focused on planning his next steps and doesn’t realize that he hasn’t even directly stated that the reason he wants out of this is less the inconvenience (though it is a pain) and more that he’s in love with Yata. Instead Fushimi’s trying to think of good ways to break the engagement and idly makes a comment about how this would have been so much easier in the days when idiots could just solve these kinds of problems with a duel.
Of course he forgot that there was an idiot in the room with him, and now Yata’s like okay looks like I gotta challenge someone to a duel. Yata probably totally misunderstood Fushimi too, thinking that Fushimi was in a real bind and that he was trying to tell Yata that if Yata really loved him he would fight a duel for Fushimi’s sake, and meanwhile Fushimi was actually trying to tell Yata that he can handle this alone and Yata shouldn’t worry. Yata isn’t really into the idea of fighting a woman and maybe he thinks he can challenge like her bodyguard, only to discover that Lady Douhan is from a prominent clan of ninjas and can fight her own duels thanks. Say Douhan has already arrived at Fushimi’s castle as part of the engagement and Yata goes to her pavilion to give his challenge, he’s all ‘I don’t like fighting girls’ when she almost stabs him and he’s like never mind, I can fight a girl (also now he’s extra concerned because Douhan likes knives and what if Saruhiko likes that in a woman).
The duel begins and imagine Fushimi’s been away from the castle so he doesn’t even learn about it until he’s on his way home. He ends up spurring his horse on ahead of his entourage all ‘that stupid moron,’ super pissed at Yata but also secretly really worried because he knows how skilled Douhan is and what if Yata gets his idiot self killed. Yata meanwhile is fighting hard for Fushimi’s hand but Douhan has him on the ropes, he didn’t expect her to be so skilled. Imagine just as Fushimi shows up Yata launches a counterattack, claiming that he won’t hand Saruhiko to anyone. Douhan defends and then manages to injure him, it looks like Yata might be defeated when a shield comes up to protect him and Fushimi appears. Yata tells him to stay out of this, struggling to get up, but Fushimi is already by his side fussing over Yata’s wound and clicking his tongue as he calls Yata an idiot. Yata’s like don’t call me an idiot, I was trying to win your shitty hand in marriage. Fushimi says he didn’t ask Yata to get himself hurt for Fushimi’s sake and Yata says he didn’t have to ask, like Yata would let him marry someone else. Fushimi pauses and then softly clicks his tongue as he says ‘I wouldn’t marry anyone else but you, idiot.’
They’re both having a moment and then Douhan clears her throat behind them and asks if Fushimi has her money. Yata is like wait money and Fushimi explains he left to get funds to pay Douhan off, the engagement’s been canceled and if Yata hadn’t been so impulsive this would have all been handled quietly. Yata’s like why didn’t you tell me that and Fushimi’s like why didn’t you tell me you challenged someone to a duel. Yata’s like well what else was I gonna do, didn’t you want me to challenge her for you. Fushimi is like no I didn’t, I said only idiots fight duels. Yata huffs at that and Fushimi touches Yata’s wound all gingerly, looking momentarily concerned as he says Yata had better not get himself hurt like this again. Yata’s like it was worth it to win your hand though, Fushimi starts to argue that Yata didn’t win anything but then he gives this rueful smile and is like you didn’t have to fight anyone for that.

To Mod: So far what character do you think definitely gets mentally better as part of their character arc?
//Well there's a couple, so I'll make a small list.
Toko is the big one. I did a full analysis of how much she's improved mentally since the events of Danganronpa 1 and Ultra Despair Girls.
Makoto's arc for these last few arcs of the story are a key one.
Mukuro is another big one. Her entire role in the story is the big bad's sidekick turned over a new leaf and trying to cope with the horrible shit she spent like, 20 years doing.
Mikan, although her's is a bit wishy washy because she tends to regress back into her Despair self every now and then, but she sees it mostly as a way of confronting and accepting that side of her that's a little bit mental.
Nagito is another big one. Though not initially, he's definitely on that path now. He's kind of coming around to accepting that his mindset was warped and that he really only convinced himself that Hope and Luck were what they were because his talent did so much to ruin his life, so he kind of had to find the positives somewhere, but now that he's sort of facing that part of himself instead of running from it, he's starting to become less of a twat.
I'm gonna put Izuru on this list to, but his is a little looser. He's not getting "mentally" better so to speak, but he's becoming more of a person and less of a template the more he interacts with the others.
Another big one is Munakata. His is also about trying to overcome his past and being less of a dick than he was in DR3.
Angie's character arc is this too, even though I don't touch on it very often, but with everything she's been through she's not all smiles all the time anymore, because she's done putting on a front and trying to let God solve all her problems.
Tenko's character arc from this point on falls under this umbrella.
Miu's character arc has been this since the end of Phase 1 all the way up to this point, and even though I really didn't like The Tower arc back when I made it, with what Miu was able to do in this chapter, it was so worth writing it in the end because it's a great way to show how far she's come as a person.
I want to say Kokichi is this as well, but he hasn't really changed that much, he's just learning how to drop the front and show a little bit of sympathy and weakness when it matters.
Sora had some trauma that she needed to overcome, and that's shown best in Rise and Shine with the situation where she was afraid to take off her restraints, fearing what she might do, but bit the bullet to save Kaede and Monodam.
Iroha went through quite a lot of development in Survivor compared to her last canon appearance in the Omake thanks to Kokichi's influence and the fact that she's lived a life away from all the Despair and dread, and that's done a lot for her mentality and personality. She's not half as selfish as she was during the Killing Game.
Akane Taira's like this too, but more on that to come.
And lastly, this is sort of what's going to happen with Uchui from this point forward. He's managed to overcome the ghosts, beat Zetsubou, stop his father's project for good, and now he just needs to mentally heal the cracks. And after a long time of being alone and suicidal, he's finally willing to accept help for his problems.
//Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Trauma.
