LOOK AT THIS DUDE ASKIN' ME FOR MY TOP 5 SUPERVILLAINS!

In all seriousness though, I'll be glad to indulge, though be forewarned that my top 5 consists of supervillains from Marvel and DC, so like if this seems basic forgive me but I am allowed to be cringe in this instance because I've been dragged back into full on purgatory.

Number 1. Doctor Doom -As I've said before, I've always respected Victor, but I've never been super crazy about him. His animated and game adaptations are good but not perfect, and the movies so far have failed to get his character across in a great way, so that might've been a part of why I wasn't a Doom Superfan. Though after getting back into the absurdity and impactfulslness of superhero comics, it soon hit me... Doctor Doom is a villain made for comics. He's overdramatic, grandiose, terrifying, bombastic, egotistical, pragmatic, powerful, absurd, nuanced, insecure, lonely, the whole package placed within a suit of armor and a green cloak. He's an arrogant, tyrannical, cold hearted technological and magical genius who embodies every inch of supervillainy you could imagine, while remaining a genuinely sophisticated, and honorable figure even with his history of pettiness. Overall Doom is just one big magnificent bastard.

Number 2. Loki - Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, and Larry Leibber making the norse God of Mischief, the Poetic Edda's best figure, a supervillain... wasn't a bad idea. The result of that however was a wannabe king in a silly little outfit with devil horns who also happens to be Odin's adoptive son and the brother of Thor. This is inaccurate as hell and shouldn't work, yet it somehow does. He's a delightful trickster at every turn with a lot of gears consistently turning in his head, and while in the comics he's not really a villain anymore and his (in)famous run in the MCU ended on a surprisingly high note, he's still fun. Am I overrating him? Maybe.

Number 3. Magneto - Magneto is basically one of the most famous examples of a "Knight Templar" in fiction, a self-righteous figure fighting for a crusade that he deems noble at any cost. As for why he feels the need to do this? He's a holocaust survivor, it's as simple as that. The comics are the legit only piece of media that go into deeper details about Magneto's life in the concentration camps and the aftermath of that hell which only led into more hell, but that's the basic gist of what makes him tick. Magneto's lived in a world where innocent people got killed because of state approval, and he's not letting that happen again.

Number 4. The Joker - The Joker is a crook who fell into a vat of chemicals and got a clownish makeover, who ended up becoming the nemesis of Batman. While the other rouges have their particular danger levels, they all have some type of cause they're fighting for or they're purely out to benefit themselves. Joker just causes chaos, death, and suffering, for the sake of his twisted sense of humor. He is willing to kill and ruin lives in the most creative way possible, so long as he finds it funny. Yet despite how twisted he is, this evil ass clown actually can be funny. Not only that, but he's the most effective contrast to Batman, even more than the other rouges. Batman is a frightening figure with a semi-demonic visage who suffered one bad day in his youth, yet he is a hero dedicated to the cause of justice and protecting the innocent citizens of Gotham City. Joker is a colorful figure with a big 'ol grin on his face and a jovial demeanor, yet he is perfectly okay with causing as much unwarranted harm to others for the sake of artistic chaos. Ultimately, the Clown Prince of Crime is a villain that's managed to last for decades, despite the ever marching clock, for these exact reasons.

Number 5. Lex Luthor - Superman's biggest hater being a self-made millionaire that is the embodiment of the best and worst of humanity will never not be fitting. Though if I'm being honest, I don't feel like DC has gone far enough with Lex. Still he's genuinely a pretty good villain for the man of steel to face.

I don’t think I look young at all. I developed permanent dark circles at age fifteen that make me look like a perpetually exhausted raccoon. When I was in my sophomore year of high school I was routinely thought to be a teacher or my best friend’s mom.

He does, in a way that he will never quite expand upon, appreciate that the man has remained, if not his friend, then his contact. He is an ear to the outside world, a hand to reach where he could not. He is not a pawn, not exactly, not a mindless henchman with which to extend his reach, but he is, in a way, more useful than even that. He is vital, a hand stretched, grasping where his own skeletal hand can not reach. He is a friend, though. His dearest, his closest, barring, at least, Ayesha.

Is there a distinction, though, between Erik and Phantom, between which man asks what of his dear friend? Perhaps once, but no longer. There is very little man left to speak of.

He sees the way the man's expression changes, but he does not understand why it does. He does not understand what it is that he possibly gave away. Of course he doesn't. There is no world in which Erik does not believe himself in control of every situation. "Bah!" Erik scoffs, dismissing the idea outright. Or, perhaps not dismissing it, but ignoring it. What, though, does Erik know of children? "I am not their teacher. They are guests in my opera house, and guests are meant to behave."

The transactional interpretation put on friendship is both deeply troubling and, from the shadowy outlines he has been allowed to glimpse over the years, disturbingly understandable. Iskandar has never quite known how to balance the dichotomy, as with so much surrounding this man; he has settled for allowing both to reside uncomfortably side by side. Two oxen yoked together, pulling in opposite directions. And in the stasis that results, he himself has stayed a friend to Erik if not the Phantom. But is that as meaningful a distinction as he thinks? Does separating out the demon's crimes exonerate the man? No, he doesn't believe that.

The same idea of exchange that imbues their relationship has strangely benefitted the young dancers. They are no use to him, and so he ignores them— unless, of course, they intrude on his realm. That last declaration is chilling, yes, but equally heartbreaking. Iskandar knows full well that pity would not be welcome but there is nothing he can do to prevent his expression shifting to reflect just how much he recognized what must lay behind such a sentiment. That is unquestionably learned, possibly taught with deliberate malice. "Not always," he says dolefully. "It is not always thus, Erik. Children also can learn respect when they are shown behavior worth emulating." Such as kindness, which he is convinced Erik never had.

Thanks for asking! Long fuckin' story short, the CDM is the Coalition for Democratic Maintenance, a human trafficking assassination death cult. That's a bit of a mouthful, though, so instead I call it a bunch of assholes.

Take all this with a grain of salt and assume it will be subject to change because, as much as I've thought about the CDM, they're not fully fleshed out yet.

The CDM is indeed the Coalition for Democratic Maintenance, a pretty shady EU-based underground organization of government officials of every level, military and ex-military personnel, civilians, and no small number of children who work to, well, maintain democracy. They're responsible for quite a few data leaks, diplomatic crises and miracles, and assassinations the world over, though their work focuses mostly in Europe and North America (and countries with strong ties to Europe and North America). Though many people join the CDM willingly and often bring their children up in it and participate to varying degrees of involvement and intensity, the core of the CDM is much more intense. These people, headed from 2006 to the organization's end in 2027 by Dennis Makovic, are what you would think of as classic genre spies. Think HYDRA (MCU), think The Hand (Daredevil), think whatever the hell Jason Bourne had going on.

They attract all kinds. Conspiracy theorists, gun nuts, philosophers, doomsday preppers. Lots of 'em bring their kids, and the higher-level ones want to make sure we come up right, so there's a training program. Most of the kids there have parents in the organization; all of us got moved around a lot.

They took me when I was four.

Caden didn't come to the CDM via family ties. Caden was taken off the sidewalk outside a school for gifted and talented children in Minneapolis in 2006, right as Makovic was coming to power. This wasn't a coincidence. The man who took her, Erik Hobbes, was, at the time, one of Makovic's best friends. As Makovic climbed the ladder, he and Erik both realized that if they wanted to be prepared for the next fifty years, they would need someone really good, someone out of the ordinary, and they couldn't wait for a member to just happen to have a genius kid. So, they did some poking around and found Janiyah May Davis, a four year old genius, an only child living with her parents in a wealthy suburb of Minneapolis.

As far as what you saw about me leaving, that was because Erik and Mak had a falling out in 2016. Long story, not worth getting into right now, but Erik took me to the east coast of the US and we started over without the CDM. Good fucking riddance. Never liked Mak, anyway.
