Far Wanderings: Legacy’s Allure
Tumblr media
Hello and welcome back to another article of Far Wanderings! Today we will go through one of Magic’s oldest and powerful formats:Legacy! Together with it’s variety, certain misconceptions of the format as well as the cost of it as a whole.
The main reason why Far Wanderings is on the topic of Legacy today is due to the fact I’ve been thinking a lot about Legacy. Many know that Legacy is definitely not a cheap format, and I’ve been itching to get back to a 60 card constructed format for quite a while now. Firstly, I would like to talk about the misconceptions many people have with Legacy
1. Legacy is ridiculously expensive, making it the format for rich peeps/collectors to play in
2. Legacy is an unfair format where combo decks are engineered to kill opponents on Turn 1.
3. People will lose often in Legacy if they don’t play blue, since Legacy is a blue-dominated format and the game’s best Counterspells are legal in Legacy.
First off, Legacy is an expensive, but it’s not ridiculously expensive to the point where that old man who’s been playing for 20 years in your shop being the only person who can afford Legacy. Secondly, Turn-1 kills are a thing in Legacy, but not to the point where it happens everytime. Lastly, not playing Blue is not the end of playing in Legacy, the metagame is very diverse and contains many top tier decks not playing Blue or have many fair decks outside of Blue.
Most people with this mindset of Legacy are not thinking of what Legacy looks like, but more towards Vintage. Where decks cost 5 digits, Turn 1 kills are very common and the entire set of Power 9 are somewhat legal. Also, Blue is very very popular in Vintage due to the fact that Standstill/Gush/Mental Misstep are all legal in Vintage but banned in Legacy.
What is Legacy really like though?
Legacy is often a format questioned by most players by a measure of it’s worth, cost as well as variety of decks played. I’ll admit that Legacy’s meta is quite stale, and rarely changes dramatically with the release of every new set(exceptions such as Delver and Eldrazi). Thus, most players familiar with the format enjoy it due the fact it isn’t as fast-paced as Modern/Standard. They can sit back, slowly construct their deck and be extremely familiar with different matchups. Decks in Legacy are also very well known for not having an expiry date on them, making the format worth the money for many players.
Despite it’s stale metagame, Legacy is much more diverse than you think. There would normally be a couple of usual suspects in the format, Miracles, Death and Taxes, Storm and Delver variants just to name a few, but Legacy has a habit repeatedly seen in the past where decks not seen very often do well in events. This is due to the fact that a large amount of decks, although not very well known, have the same power level as the Top Tier decks. It’s mostly a matter of being at the right time, attacking the meta when it least expects or prepared for it.
Legacy also is also home to many many strong Blue cards that people love/hate to play. However, there are many many decks that perform very well despite not having Blue:
Tumblr media
A fine example of certain Tier decks not playing Blue:
Death and Taxes
Eldrazi
4C Loam
Elves
Not playing Blue does not necessarily put any player at a disadvantage in Legacy, but more of a good challenge to me :)
Legacy’s cost
I mentioned earlier about Legacy being not as costly as Vintage. It is however very costly for players who don’t have a huge collection or a lot of money. One reason why Legacy is still in the region of 4 digits or high 3 digits to play is due to the Dual Lands.
Tumblr media
Dual Lands are extremely important in Legacy. This is mainly because they are fetchable and unlike Shocklands, they require no life to use straightaway. However, there are a few other lands that really cost you to cut a fair bit of your wallet.
Tumblr media
The bad part is that all these lands(small exception for Wasteland) share the same problems with one another, and that is they are all on the Reserved List. They would probably not see a reprint again and when the demand increases on cards with low supply, so does their price tag.
Most of the other staples in the format cost $100 a playset at the most, but lands tend to cost way more than that $100 mark :/
Good tips to get started in Legacy
The following tips are meant for new players tempted to start in Legacy. although I’m not a Legacy player, these are tips that have been passed down for many years are definitely useful for any new player getting into the format today.
1. Save $$$
Now this might sound like something like kid’s advice, but believe me - saving money is a really huge part of getting started in Legacy, a good way to do so would be making a change jar or committing to dip $30-$60 a month into your “Legacy Fund”.Another small piece of advice following this up would be to avoid spending money on cards not related to your “Legacy Fund”, as this delays a lot in your entry into Legacy.
2. Proxy/Playtest online
Decks in Legacy are by no means cheap, but proxying a deck before buying the actual pieces for it in Paper provides valuable understanding of the deck as a whole. The same applies to playtesting a deck on an online platform such as Xmage or Cockatrice. Proxying saves a lot of money and provides invaluable experience for new/experienced players looking to build any Legacy deck.
3. Borrow decks
Borrowing decks is quite a common sight in today’s standards. It provides a hands-on experience for many new players, for those unsure on what deck to play, borrowing decks might be a good idea. Another upside of borrowing decks would be the fact that you have an actual deck to participate at your store’s Legacy tourney, this would give you a better understanding of your store’s metagame as well as the strengths/weaknesses of other decks in the format. It also opens you up to playgroups/communities who enjoy playing Legacy :D
4. Budget Replacements
Although I wouldn’t highly recommend this tip, it does seem to work for different people/decks sometimes. One fine example would be replacing Duals with Shocks. Although not ideal for some decks due to land flexibility or the life loss makes it risky, Shocks do save a lot of money and players can find themselves upgrading to Duals later.
Conclusion/What I’m building
That is all for today’s Far Wanderings, Legacy is a very fun, powerful and explosive format. Most experienced players would often describe it as Magic’s greatest format and that it brings a lot of nostalgia to different people. Despite it’s cost and slow movement, Legacy somehow manages to intrigue players both old and new to the format. As for me, I’ve also decided to dive into the format with a more straightforward approach.
Tumblr media
Yes..it is Legacy Burn! I can’t really afford the staples in the format as a student, but Burn is a good place to start for anyone on a smaller budget as well as throwing fire at people’s faces :D
Once again, thank you for reading this week’s Far Wanderings, do share what decks you enjoy playing most in Legacy, and I’ll catch you later!

Breaking Heliod: 5 Apects to Combo
I love playing combo decks. I love building Combo decks. I really suck at both as well.  But over the years trying to make cards synergize, I’ve learned six qualities for successful combo: speed, consistency, efficiency, power, and resilience. Every good Combo deck utilizes three of these qualities. The great combo decks (ones that often times get banned), utilize four or more. Deck builders need to know which aspects they’re utilizing the most, then how and why.  Deck pilots need to know how to maximize the most important elements for their particular match-up, hands, and game state.  For those who don’t know these 5 aspects, let’s discuss them.
Speed.  Speed in Magic: The Gathering strictly refers to the turn in which a deck can win on average. For combo, speed should be the highest priority of the deck. The faster the deck can put together its combo, the less likely it is to be disrupted, and the less it has to interact with the opponent’s game plan. Having to interact to keep from losing prevents the combo deck from being proactive both in game play and in card slots.  Without many slots for interaction, combo decks need to race their opponents and win before needing to interact. (Splinter Twin as combo control was an extreme exception).
Consistency measures how often the deck works, not wins, but works in the way in which it was designed. Consistency is the second most important aspect of a combo deck, and thankfully it can be measured. Play a large number of games and record the coinciding data. Slap a statistic on it. If it doesn’t consistently work, remember this: Non-combo card slots in the deck should be devoted to consistency.  There should be plenty of slots available for consistency, which brings up our next quality.
Efficiency describes two things: 1) the number of cards required for the combo, and 2) the number of turns the combo takes to set-up on the battlefield. The smaller number of cards the combo demands, the easier it is to assemble.  The less turns needed for set-up makes it more difficult to interact with. An uber successful combo deck is efficient in both areas.  It has ways to find it’s combo quickly, requires only a few cards to assemble, and can combo out the turn the cards hit the battlefield.
Resilience refers to how well the deck plays through hate. Eventually a combo deck will be hated out. It may be hated out through sideboard options, while interactive decks will run main-board disruption. If a deck folds to a single card, it will be difficult to win side-boarded games, which are 2 out of every 3 games played in a given match. To be resilient, combo decks need either a plan B, redundancy in the deck, disruption of their own to protect the combo, or sideboard cards to bring in to interact with opponent’s hate. All of these make a more resilient deck.  Resiliency is necessary for post side-board games.
Power describes the strength of the combo, and it needs to be as broken as possible. By that, I mean when the combo is in effect, it must lead to winning the game, a.k.a inevitability. The combo could be to make infinite mana, card draw, life gain, mill, damage, or creature creation. But no matter what it is, the combo must lead to winning the game once on board.  If it doesn’t, or it doesn’t have inevitability, it isn’t powerful enough to build a deck around.  Now with all this discussed, let’s get to how identifying these 5 aspects helped me break the card Heliod, Sun-Crowned. First, here is my initial 75:
Creatures:
4 Helio, Sun-Crowned, 4 Walking Ballista, 4 Ranger, Captain of Eos,         4 Birds of Paradise
Instants:
4 Brought Back, 4 Once Upon a Time, 3 Eldarami’s Call, 3 Swift Justice
Arifacts:
4 Mishra’s Bauble
Enchantments:
4 Leyline of Vitality, 2 Force of Virture
Lands:
4 Windswept Heath, 4 Flooded Strand, 4 Temple Gardens, 2 Canopy Vista, 2 Plains, 2 Forests, 2 Cavern of Souls
Breakdown: The deck pairs Heliod with Walking Ballista for infinite damage between the card interactions.  Everything else in the deck either speeds it up, makes it resilient, efficient, or consistent.  Once Upon a Time, Eladamri’s Call, Mishra’s Bauble, and Ranger, Captain of Eos let me either dig or tutor for the cards I need.  Birds of Paradise and Brought Back ramps mana.  Ranger Captain and Cavern of Souls protect the combo pieces the turn I cast them to go off while Brought Back can bring them back if they are destroyed after casting them. Leyline of Vitality, Force of Virture, and Swift Justice speed up the deck, with Leyline acting as an engine card.  Leyline ensures I can cast Ballista for free and it doesn’t die because it comes in as an 0/1.  I can gain a life from a creature entering the battlefield, which triggers Heliod putting a counter onto a target creature, which is Ballista.  Then if i have mana open to activate Heliod’s lifelink ability, or a Swift Justice in hand, Walking Ballista goes infinite.  Force of Virtue is in the deck to act as another 2 copies of Leyline.  It doesn’t grant all the abilities of Leyline, but it is a free cast and grants a point of power and defense, as well as 2 white devotion to make Heliod a creature in case i need to go with Plan B of creature beat downs. Leyline gaining life for each creature entering the battlefield also buys an extra turn against aggro and burn decks in case I need until turn five for my combo.
The deck consistently goldfishes turn 4, and occasionally turn three, but this is only with Leyline on board from the opening hand.  Don’t underestimate the power of Brought Back and Leyline in this deck.  The deck can’t win on turn 3 without one of those two cards. Leyline can guarantee a turn three combo with a turn 2 Heliod and turn three Ballista coming down for free. Brought Back can ramp and dig through the deck quickly by returning fetch lands or Mishra’s Bauble to thin out the deck as well as return a combo piece, blocker, or sacked Ranger from the graveyard.
The sideboard consists of 4 Force of Vigor. 3 Leyline of Sanctity  2 Phyrexian Revoker, 2 Beast Within, 2 Engineered Explosives, 2 Path to Exile
Leyline and Force of Vigor protects my combo by either protecting my hand or my life total against direct damage and discard, or by killing artifacts and enchantments that shut my combo down.  Beast Within, EE, and Path take out anything I could need to take out, and Revoker can be tutored to shut down opponent combo pieces.  I was tempted to include 4 Silence in the sideboard as a control card, and I might still, but I haven’t played enough games to know if it’s worth it or not.
I didn’t want to jam Heliod into another shell like most people are attempting.  I wanted a shell based around the combo, and this one seems to be the best.  It’s important cards are hard to interact with such as Heliod and due to Cavern and Ranger, and many of the cards are simply free to play: Once Upon a Time, Leylines, Force of Virtue, Ballista, Bauble.  Please feel free to try this list with the understanding of the 5 aspects of combo, and that this list attempts to maximize all 5 aspects: speed, power, consistency, resilience, and efficiency to make every game winnable. If anyone has any other feedback or suggestions, please feel free to comment.

Hey, fellows! Kinda felt like sharing something today, so here you go: one of the first #mtgcombos I was able to pull of (I started playing with Mirrordin Besieged) Melira, Sylvok Outcast + Phyrexian Unlife, easy to pull of due to the low CMC of the cards, but a lot of fun to protect: Melira is kinda fragile and anyone could Naturalize a Phyrexian Unlife (Hexproof wasn't as common as now, in fact, it still wasn't a keyword) but still, it netted me a few wins 😉 #MTG #magicthegathering #mtgcommunity #mtgcard #mtgaddicts #mtgdaily #mtgcommander #mtgelite #mtgedh #mtglegacy #mtgcombos https://www.instagram.com/p/Bope25nBTnV/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1km103x6oiaox
