I used an "easier" brush that I love, but can't figure out how to make it stop breaking at small sizes. --- Day 6, Family: Just spying wistfully at Rocky's family... You know, it's not very telesis to keep me single for so long. LIGHT, when is it my tURN?!

“Here we are.”

Zeke hopped off of the yakmel cart first, reaching a hand out to his father to help him off.

Working with and not against his knees and back, Mort slowly pushed himself up off his seat, taking Zeke’s hand and shuffling off of the cart with a grunt. It had taken them a while to get to the outback where the new planting site was, since the cart drove nice and slowly, per Zeke’s instructions.

More than half the town was already there and milling about. Everyone had something in their hands—shovels, saplings, seeds and shrubbery. Off to the side was the builder in the (still rather intimidating) robot, freshly outfitted for everything tree planting, the director inspecting it with a defeated, wistful look.

“What a sight,” Mort murmured. “When was the last time you felt this much hope in the air…?”

A hum rumbled through Zeke’s chest. “Not even the Little Woods planting had this many people.”

He excused himself after that, walking off towards Wisteria, Professor Luo, and the robot to make sure everything was all set. Mort was suddenly left all by himself in the midst of all the activity.

He slowly made his way around, nodding in greeting to all he passed. Seeing everyone’s smiling faces, all the new greenery being put into the ground, so much life returned to the people and the landscape of Sandrock…all he could think about was Martle. How happy she would be to see all of this.

It almost felt like if he turned around, Mort would see her carrying a sapling right alongside everyone else, beaming that signature sunny smile.

“Alright, ready? Heeeeeave-ho!”

“Don’t forget, lift wit yer knees, Pebs!”

“Lift da…lift da tree!!”

The salvager family passed by Mort, all hands on a baby saxoul tree. Rocky or Krystal alone could’ve hauled the entire thing over their shoulder, but it seemed like little Pebbles wanted in on the action.

“Oh, look at you, Pebs! So strong!” Krystal cooed.

“Attaboy!” Rocky bellowed. “Ya got da technique!”

Mort chuckled at the sight, deciding to trail behind the family as they made their way to an open plot of soil.

“Where should it go, little man? Where’s a good home for this tree here?”

Pebbles glanced around the root ball that was twice the size of his head, looking for the perfect spot. He grunted a little, pushing in on the root ball. Rocky and Krystal followed suit, scooching ever so slightly per Pebbles’s directions.

Once he gave the cue (“Here! Here!”), they all set the tree down to the side and grabbed their shovels. Mort shuffled a little closer.

“Would you all like a hand?”

“Oh, please don’t strain yerself, Mr. Mort!” Krystal exclaimed. “We got three sets’a hands on this tree. We’ll be fine. Ain’t that right, Pebs?”

“Mishter Mort!” Pebbles dropped his shovel, waving wildly with both his hands. “Hi Mishter Mort! We planting trees!”

“Indeed you are,” Mort hummed with a low chuckle. “And what a fine job you’re doing. It’s not easy work.”

“Dis tree is gonna grow…an’ I’m gonna grow…an’ we’ll both be super big ‘n strong!”

“Now that more trees can be planted…you’re right about that, young lad. When you grow up, I sincerely hope that you can return to this tree to see it thriving like you will.”

“Big ‘n strong like Pa…big ‘n strong like Ma…big’ ‘n strong like Mishter Zeke ‘n Uncle Lo-Lo…big ‘n strong like you, Mishter Mort!!”

Mort’s eyes widened at that. He was but a frail old man, eroding like all the other rocks in this desert, blasted by wind and sand. Neither big nor strong. “Oho-ho… I’m but an old, old man, Pebbles. Hardly have the strength left in my knees to plant another tree.”

“Really?” Pebbles tilted his head to the side. Oh, the innocence of youth… “But Mishus Dan-bi and Miss Trudy and Ma ‘n Pa say you’re really strong!! You planted lots ‘n lots of trees a long time ago! And dey said…dey said you gotta strong heart!”

Mort blinked. He looked over to Rocky and Krystal, busy fluffing out the roots of the tree before they planted it. They simply shot him a small smile. “That is…very kind of them. And kind of you. Thank you. I just paved the way for those who came after.”

“You’re welcome, Mishter Mort!”

“Heh heh…Pebs, tree’s ready to get planted!” Rocky called, pulling the tot away.

Mort set his walking stick firmly into the dirt and walked over to them. “Would you grant me the honor of planting this one with you all?”

“Oh, of course, Mr. Mort!” Krystal said.

“Not a problem at all!” Rocky chimed in.

“Yay! Mishter Mort’s helping!” Pebbles giggled.

And so, 8 hands lowered the baby saxoul into the fresh soil, and 8 hands patted it down so it was nice and secure.

Mort felt his heart lift. Sandrock’s oldest remnants…and Sandrock’s newest hope. Planting the seeds together for a truly better future.

Oh, Martle, he mused. Forgive this old fool for staying. Forgive me for keeping Zeke here. But just look at what it’s all become…

He felt a breeze stir, tugging lightly at the brim of his hat, and he smiled.

She was smiling right alongside him.

Some quick notes about MTaS Multiplayer

Don't have any pics yet, but here's what I've noticed:

Mi-an's area is mostly empty of equipment. Mason is still there (unable to be befriended still) but we have his workshop area and I have not found where he's supposedly building things.

Missing places: Eufala Salvage (fixed in an early co-op mission), the barn on the Wandering Y Ranch, the entire train station and about half the tracks, the bridge over to the Gecko Ruins area (for some reason our character is able to get to Sandrock from there, have no clue why), the apartments where a bunch of characters live, part of the outside of the Blue Moon Saloon (also another early mission), Construction Junction, the barber shop, By The Stairs, Amirah's pottery shop, the museum, the Golden Goose, Fang's place, the bridge between town and the tracks, the water tower, and the shooting range outside the Civil Corps.

The stage outside the Blue Moon exists but currently Matilda is holding her Tuesday-Thursday sermons at the steps of City Hall for some reason.

Missing characters so far: All of Rocky's staff (Pebbles exist so I presume Krystal does too - I just haven't seen her), Amirah, Arvio, Grace, Jensen, Pablo, Pen (admittedly I could have just missed him), and Ernest. On the other hand, Trudy is there from the beginning, as is Banjo and Meerkat. From one of the missions, it looks like we get Nia permanently in Multiplayer (as opposed to single/solo player where she only shows up for 3 days currently).

Main missions take a backseat to co-op missions (I've seen 2, not counting the beginner missions - one where Elsie straight out gives you a fish trap, and one where Trudy hires you on as essentially assistant mayor). You can't take a solo commission until you're level 15. You gain knowledge points the same time at level 5.

I was a bit off on that last one. The missions with the orange label that the singleplayer game uses are solo missions in multiplayer. You get a few solo missions but everything else is co-op until you're player level 15 where you can take solo commissions.

The tutorial is, interestingly, the same stuff more or less as the Portia tutorial - a pickhammer, an axe, and a furnace, interrupted with a tutorial on how to use the commissions board.

The abandoned ruins for Multiplayer is The Breach (just like it was in the previous open multiplayer). You do have to dig it out before you use it. It's possible to enter the Breach with multiple characters or solo, but apparently if you enter the multiplayer version you get tin two levels higher up in the mines than solo, where you get tin at the same level (3) as the solo game. The Breach uses a lot of the same structure as the Eufala Salvage Abandoned Ruins, but mixed up a bit so don't depend on your knowledge of that place for this version.

You can build things buildings without having Construction Junction up and going. (See note below about controllers.)

You gain rep points for talking to people as well as building things. This makes sense. You're also very far behind in the rankings so you'll want to balance talking out with building.

Your ranking for what you can do is based on your workshop level, not your personal level.

You gain access to some things by leveling up your workshop, but for others you'll still need to visit Qi's machine.

I was a bit vague on the above - as you gain workshop levels, you gain the ability to research certain things - so for example, you don't immediately have access to the dew collector blueprint. You still have to use data discs to have Qi research the devices.

Buying blueprints costs workshop points, not gols, at the Commerce Guild. And those blueprints include bronze bars, for some reason. (Interestingly enough, not the feather duster, which is either available from the beginning or just shows up at some point at your workstation.)

Hugo sells the bronze axe and pickaxe, simple weapons, blueprints for weapons (I think they cost gols rather than the workshop points), and for all of us who hate that stupid bronze blade, yes, he sells those.

You can get these neat things that allow you to get NPCs to cooperate on... something. Trudy gives you one free, and the rest can be bought with reputation points at City Hall. ETA: You use these coupons to get these NPCs to give you something related to your specialty for a certain period of time.

Knowledge points are like single player, but you're not restricted to whatever skill you were using. So no matter if you've been fighting monsters, carving out ruins, or doing co-op missions, you can apply the point to anything - you can gain combat skill, for example, for just being good at digging things out. ETA: In the multiplayer version, you gain knowledge points like you did in Portia - 1 per level.

Note to Steam Deck users/controller users: While most of the game works just fine on controller (I've been running it with no problem on Steam Deck), the building placement gives you an error message if you try to use a controller. So instead of trying to place a building on Steam Deck extremely clumsily, you cannot place it at all.

Pathea is aware of the popularity of Sandrock on Steam Deck and is working on controller support for the multiplayer. (Hopefully it'll get fixed on singleplayer too, I have custom controls for this kind of thing but it's still annoying.)

Summary: In order to get myself back into the habit of writing again and force myself to write outside of inconsistent waves of brainrot, every day of my winter break, I'm planning on doing a warmup exercise:

Spin a wheel of all the MTAS characters (including my builder Wis) twice, and write a short oneshot (limit 1000 words) involving both of those characters.

Absolute trashfire of a semester that I managed to escape relatively unscathed from?? Hard to say, grades still aren't final yet. But now that I finally have some proper time to just sit down and write, I want to clear off some of the stuff on my writing backlog! More details here, if you're curious.

But in order to get all of that stuff done, which isn't really in the locus of my brainrot anymore, I have to really sit myself down and force myself to write even when I don't have that wave of hyperfixation on it to help get through it. So that's what these are for! They won't really be at the top of my game quality wise, but most importantly, it's tangible writing that's being done instead of just kinda staring at my outlines and daydreaming about it.
