Bay Area snow photos: rare winter storm transforms California landscape

The conditions are right across many parts of California to get snow on Thursday and Friday.

Cold air from the Arctic is combining with ocean moisture and will result in snow. The only question is how much will fall.

It was more than just a fluke dusting. Many areas found snow piling up to six inches.

this 1917 Mt Tamalpais and Muir Woods Railway panoramic map from Marin county, California showcases the views from its namesake peak and presents a lengthy advertisement of the journey. one ticket bought in San Francisco gets you a ferry trip across the bay, a short ride on an electric train to Mill Valley, and a trip up the mountain on a steam-powered rack train via a famously serpentine course. gravity car trips were also available, coasting downhill into Muir Woods. the railway burned in a wildfire in 1929, and closed shortly thereafter.
