Onyx's cringe ass horror recommendations for Halloween: so you like the idea of mascot horror, but most mascot "horror" makes you wanna kill yourself
I personally love the concept of mascot horror, at least in the idea of childish horror, combining childlike and nostalgic things with actual horror, etc. I don't love Garten of BanBan.
So here's some "mascot-esque" horror I think is a good sort of replacement, that utilizes the contrast of cute and childlike vs disturbing without just pretending to as an excuse to open a merch store.
1. Petscop (2017-2019 YouTube series) Basics: A man discovers an old Petscop disc in his mom's house and uploads a series of videos of him playing it to prove to a "friend" that it's real. Not outright scary, but cryptic and eerie. Content warnings: Child abuse and allusions to suicide
Tumblr media Tumblr media
2. Shipwrecked 64 (2024 video game) Basics: A cursed "lost N64 game" created by a slighted developer with the intention of exposing the covered-up crimes of the company that commissioned it. One of the most outright scary on the list. Content warnings: Graphic violence, self-hate, self-harm (brought up by ralseibinary because I forgor)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
3. Mr. Hopp's Playhouse (2019-2023 video game series) Basics: A girl's dying gift from her grandmother- a creepy toy rabbit named Mr. Hopp- turns out to be housing a demonic entity. Not very scary, but an entertaining game with an interesting story. Content warnings: Emotional abuse against children and implied violence (both in Mr. Hopp's Playhouse 2)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
4. The Walten Files (2020-present YouTube series) Basics: A series chronicling the disturbing incidents and supernatural occurences around the now-defunct Bon's Burgers. My personal pick for the scariest on the list. Content warnings: Harm against/death of children, extreme/graphic violence
Tumblr media Tumblr media
5. Harmony & Horror (2019-?? YouTube series) Basics: A mad toymaker traps his family inside a series of grotesque living dolls in a search for the perfect toy. A somewhat disturbing and scare-heavy series. Content warnings: Religious/satanic themes, graphic violence, domestic and child abuse
Tumblr media Tumblr media
6. The Nursery (2024-present YouTube series) Basics: My own horror series. A girl returns to her hometown years after leaving to investigate the urban legend of "The Thing" and an unidentified Jane Doe. Not so much childlike, at least, not yet, but designed to be Petscop-esque, sort of nostalgic. Content warnings: Implied child abuse and abandonment, graphic violence, harm to and death of small children, religious themes, body dysmorphia
Tumblr media Tumblr media
7. Welcome Home (2023 "ARG") Basics: A website detailing the restoration and preservation of the fictitious lost Sesame-Street style show Welcome Home. Not really an ARG. The opposite end of the spectrum from The Nursery, Welcome Home is less horror-based and more rooted in the nostalgic, childish aesthetic. Content warnings: None that I know of
Tumblr media Tumblr media
8. Amanda the Adventurer (2023-present video game series) Basics: A Dora-the-Explorer-esque public-access TV series houses at least one demon and the trapped souls of children who have been lured in by the show. Content warnings: Religious/satanic/cult themes, implied harm to/death of small children
Tumblr media Tumblr media
9. Choo-Choo Charles (2022 video game) Basics: A giant spider inhabiting a defunct train terrorizes a remote island, and an archivist and monster hunter is tasked with finding the spider's eggs. Different from most mascot horror and basically all horror on this list, but in a way that felt worth honoring with its inclusion. Content warnings: Religious/cult themes, animal death?

I'M BACK! Currently busy with making my Spooky Month×Stranger Things AU, but I am here once more! With a new picture for Spooky Month!
And I drew the SM kids as main characters of games, I like! (Or just got stuck in my memory)
Tumblr media
Ross (DB) as Frisk (Undertale) (I had other ideas, but I ended up doing this, because I didn't want to leave out my boy from experimenting with his gender out of the group (given everyone uses They/Them to Frisk IN CANON and I (personally) headcanon them as genderfluid)
Roy (FtM) as Unnamed protagonist girl (My eyes deceive)
Robert (FtM) as Ginger (The Path)
Skid/Beverly as Ron (Bad Parenting, and shout out to @/spookyskidy on SM confession blog for giving me idea for him!)
Pump/Will as Protagonist child (Tattletail. I mean... he has a Tattletail toy IN THE SHOW)
And last, but not least...
Susie as Ruby (Mr. Hopps' playhouse)
Some rumbling undercut! (Mainly why I even made this picture)
So! This one needs a bit of backstory. So, few days ago, I got a video on "my eyes deceive" in my recommendations (original, not roblox version) and, due the title, I got curious and went to watch it (and that sent me down the spiral, that reminded me of that I like watching True Crime videos :D).
And, as I was on my daily walk, my brain went like... "What if I made an AU of this?" And here I am-
I only wanted to make picture of Roy (who, due what happens in the game, is FtM trans) in both endings, but I didn't feel like drawing that dark implications, so I just drew all SM kids as protagonists of games!
Also, fun fact! Roy was THE ONLY ONE, whose role I decided on spot (1. He was the very reason, I even wanted to do it... and 2. I kinda wanted to get Pump too, but... I did throw Susie around and in one place they were together (but it would be mainly be Susie's game and Pump would just run around with her).
If anyone gets curious about other possible ideas, I had for these kids, feel free to ask, I'd happily draw them too!

The Best Point-and-Click Games
A game’s aesthetic and theme must be creative, unique and interesting to attract viewers. To love a game as a whole, the characters must be great too. Some people may think point-and-click games are boring, but this isn’t the case with certain genres. This is especially the case with the most recent independent indie video games. Because of this, the best point-and-click games will be presented.
1. Fran Bow
Many things are inspired by the “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” novel by Lewis Carroll. This game; however, features many original elements from the book series. Fran Bow, Mr. Midnight, Itward, Palontras and King Ziar are the best characters in the game. In addition, the independent dark fantasy adventure game lives up to its genres with incredible story unpredictability. It also has a strong gothic horror aesthetic, which is seemingly composed of oil paint drawings. This game knows true horror lies within the atmosphere; not jump-scares. Because of this, horror is taken to an all-new level.
Tumblr media
2. Sally Face
For some reason, this game is a bit like “Fran Bow” with its own incredible unpredictability and several good characters. Sal, Larry, Ashely, Todd, Lisa, Neil and Gizmo are some of the best characters in the game. In addition, the game has it’s own aesthetic style, which is seemingly composed of sketchy drawings. The game utilizes individual horror elements to build its own creepy atmosphere once in a while. Despite this, there’s a mystery adventure in the indie game with its own kind of dark humor.
Tumblr media
3. Little Misfortune
Although this is more of a ‘choose your own adventure’ game, the gameplay is quite similar to a point-and-click game. This independent dark fantasy game takes place in the same universe as Fran Bow. However, there aren’t many horror environments or elements compared to its predecessor. The universe is better described as “messed up” through its dark humor. In addition, the weird and random things in the game are also messed up. These things create a strong and lingering impact while the humor wears off overtime. Despite all of this, the game still features great characters, such as Benjamin and Misfortune.
Tumblr media
4. There Is No Game: Wrong Dimension
At first, this seemed like a highly predictable game. However, as it progresses, the game’s story and gameplay mechanics become less predictable and more humorous. This game is the definition of weird upon its completion. Each chapter of the game features a new and different aesthetic art style, which is fun to play. This is a similar way of telling a story by introducing different environments, like what’s seen in the final chapter of “Sally Face”.
Tumblr media
5. Alice is Dead
This series includes a sequel game along with a third installment. However, the first game will only be covered. This game has beautiful drawn artwork paired with creepy and cinematic music. It has a mix of old-fashioned Disney movie wonder and creepiness to create a gritty horror style. Although there aren’t too many, there are some random and unexpected horror elements scattered throughout the game. In the end, the mystery is what truly pulls the story through.
Tumblr media
6. Parsnip
Like the previous game above, this game is short. There’s also a sequel to this game, but it doesn’t fit into the horror genre in any way. In this game, there are some different ending outcomes a player can easily gain for the sake of the story. One of these include a ‘good’ ending. These ‘endings’ create the adventure daylight horror genre. Besides Parsnip, Bell, LeRose and Squirrel Girl are the best characters in the game.
Tumblr media
7. Mr. Hopp’s Playhouse 1 & 2:
The games in this series are of the pixelized stealth horror genre. Both games also have multiple endings. The first installment has its own creepy and suspenseful atmosphere. By the end, players are most likely curious to know more about the story. Like its predecessor, the sequel has its own unique soundtrack, which is easily identifiable and individualized to the series. In addition, this game continues the story and lore befitting its genre to conclude everything from the prequel storyline.
Tumblr media
8. Whiskers
Unfortunately, this game is short for those who prefer playing a long title. The game also doesn’t have much of a story either. Regardless of these things, the game’s aesthetic is interesting with a “pant n’ drawing by hand” type of art style to it. The universe is also well-built and horrific in its own twisted way. Overall, for some reason, the game’s situation seems to create “Saw” movie vibes.

What do you think? Do you agree with the top picks? If not, what are some of your favorite point-and-click games? Please share with me!

Note
hello, in the tags of one of your lovely posts (about f/os who are clueless about your passions but are supportive anyways) you mentioned liking to watch breakdowns of horror games you've never played, and as someone who also enjoys stuff like that I was wondering if you had recommendations? or would like to use this ask to ramble about it? 👀
Oh!! Sure thing!! I’m not sure if you’re asking for recommendations of the games or the videos I watch on them so I’ll do a few of both ofjsofidjfjd, I don’t really get to talk about my love of horror games over here since I don’t have F/Os or S/Is (that I talk about) in those universes but I do love me some analyses lol
The most recent game I watched stuff on is Resident Evil Village, I’ll be honest I have not watched stuff on any of the other resident evil games but I caught myself up on the story that happened in 7 and then watched Village and it’s pretty solid, no I didn’t just watch it for Lady Dimitrescu even tho that definitely did raise my interest in the series of it. Some other games i’ve watch stuff on, playthroughs and analysis, thatve raised my interest lately were Bioshock, Subnautica (which is horror by association), Dark Deception, Little Nightmares 1&2 (HIGHLY RECOMMEND, I love LNs), Alice Madness returns, Sally face, Spooky‘s jumpscare mansion, which I’ll be honest I mostly like for the monsters in the monster categories because I think that it’s really creative and neat lol, and Mr Hopps playhouse (The second one just came out but I haven’t watched it yet so I can’t say anything about it but like it’s there 👀) there’s also games that are associated with Fnaf that I always jump on, fan games and games inspired by it are usually pretty good but that’s a whole other can of worms because I really do have a deep rooted love for anything Fnaf
I would, if you’re going to look up any of those, highly recommend that you check trigger warnings and content warnings before actually starting them in any capacity because there’s definitely stuff that could make people uncomfortable as happens with the horror genre, so please just don’t go in COMPLETELY blind and protect yourself
I have a ton of other horror games that I enjoy but as opposed to just watching analyses on them I often play them myself and or have had obsessions with them such as Batim, Fnaf, Little nightmares (which is in both lists because I haven’t played it but. Dude. It’s good, definitely look up the warnings though)
As for channels that I watch for explanations, SuperHorrorBro is kinda a go-to for me for explanations if I think I want to get into a game he’s covered or just get the gist of it, there is of course Game Theory, regardless of accurateness on theories, there’s also their sub-channel The Game Theorists which tends to have a bit more variety going on and is fun to just kind of keep an eye on if you’re looking for new content, and then if I get interested in something from there I’ll go down the rabbit hole of looking for creators were specifically doing videos on that game, whether it be breakthroughs, fun facts, Easter eggs, etc, thanks to me looking stuff up all the time sometimes I’ll randomly get breakdown videos recommended to me by YouTube from creators I don’t actively follow and then just watch them and Move on so unfortunately my variety ofcreator knowledge is pretty thin outside of these ones but they’re there and they work as a good stepping stone
I just have a deep rooted love for the Horror and Thriller genres and it tends to cross into my intense love for a story building and theorizing so I tend to get invested in finding out about the different worlds and stories even if I’m never going to actually play the game myself kfndkgnskfndk I also don’t know how long of an answer is too long so I’m gonna stop here but I really appreciate you asking so if do you want more recommendations of a specific flavor or just want to read me ramble on about stuff you can always feel free to ask me more :D

Would both Mr Hopp's Playhouse 1 & 2, be mixed with Bunny Call or just only the first game, while the second game is mixed with a different Fazbear Frights story?
I think just one, maybe the second one could be a different story.
