Mass Effect 2 replay, Garrus’ loyalty mission:
-Bailey thinks someone is feeding Fade inside information and that’s how he’s avoiding C-Sec. This is the first hint that “Fade” is Harkin.
-In the warehouse, you immediately meet “Fade” (really his contact) who asks you who needs to disappear.
This feels like part of the mission is missing. Why is Fade’s contact here? Why does he assume someone needs to disappear?
I suspect part of the mission to trigger this contact was cut. I’m curious why. Garrus’ mission is already short.
-If you don’t take the renegade interrupt to shoot them, the krogan bodyguards just leave.
That’s pretty funny. The game clearly wanted you to shoot them.
I have the impression one of the developers asked “So, what do we do if the player doesn’t shoot?” and another said, “Eh, for now just have them walk away. We’ll come up with something later.” Then they didn’t.
-The contact mentions that Harkin is helping Blue Suns infiltrate organizations and businesses on the Citadel.
Why are they doing so? They’re a mercenary group.
This is the first and last time it’s mentioned, so add this to the tally of hooks ME2 provides that ME3 doesn’t use.
-And Harkin is conveniently at the entrance of the Factory District when Shepard and co show up out of the blue.
Their timing today is amazing. That made it easier to find the right factory. Can you imagine how long it would have taken if Shepard had to check each factory to find Harkin? Or if he was at home that day?
-Garrus says he’ll give Sidonis an easy death compares to what the rest of his men received. It’s implied they were tortured.
No wonder their deaths are haunting him.
-In Thane’s mission, Shepard chooses (or not) to beat up Mouse for information. Thane would prefer the mission was nonviolent.
In Garrus’ mission, Garrus beats up Harkin for information. Shepard chooses whether or not to hold him back.
Thane’s at the end of a long and bloody life and making what peace he can with it. Garrus is essentially having an early mid life crisis about the direction his life will go.
Garrus isn’t an assassin, but he has chosen to kill many men in cold blood. I think he’d benefit from speaking with Thane.
-Garrus is only reflective on this mission if Shepard challenges his decision to kill Sidonis.
If they do not, Garrus accomplishes exactly what he sets out to do and closes that part of his life. Nothing forces him to think more deeply about it.
Given that most of the loyalty missions are meant to drive character growth, I assume that Bioware expected players to go the paragon route.
-Shepard has a lot of faith that Garrus won’t shoot them. I’m sure he has bullets that can go through more than person.
-Even after you tell him that you’re blocking Garrus’ shot, Sidonis keeps moving. He decides to lean over a railing!
That’s the clearest evidence that he has a death wish.
-What finally convinces Garrus to not shoot Sidonis is Sidonis saying there’s nothing he can do to make his actions right.
I think that’s what Garrus really wanted – to hear Sidonis take responsibility and admit that he fucked up.
Turians take personal responsibility very seriously, so that’s probably what showed Garrus that Sidonis had some chance of doing better.
-The mission summary says that Cerberus has operatives in C-Sec. Lovely. And a bit of foreshadowing for the Citadel Coup in ME3.
Normandy
-Thane says that when he married Irikah, the hanar let him leave their service. He chose to continue to freelance.
The lengths this drell is willing to go to deny he has any culpability in the assassinations he’s performed is impressive.
Also, I wonder how Irikah felt about it?
If nothing else, the assassinations kept Thane from home. Did she ever wish he’d quit and take a job that let him stay with the family? I’m sure he could have found something, even if it didn’t pay as well.
-After killing his wife’s murderers, Thane was passively suicidal until he met Shepard.
Understandable. He’s said repeatedly his wife is what connected him to the world. Without her, he was adrift.
He should have reconnected with Kolyat, but I can understand why he’d feel that Kolyat was better off without him. He did mention in his loyalty mission that he checked in with him after killing his wife’s murderers, but decided to stay away.
-Samara has two conversations after her initial post-loyalty dialogue. Unusual, except for Mordin.
-Unlike everyone else, attempting to initiate a relationship with Samara is renegade.
-She lets you down very gently. She seems genuinely attracted to Shepard but resolute that she is not going to pursue it.
-If you stay renegade throughout, she implies sex without emotion is common for maidens. She’s only interested in sex with a connection.
-The entire point of this conversation is to establish that Samara is not a romance option.
It’s actually pretty funny that Bioware felt this required its own independent conversation.
I’m happy they did so – Bioware leaned hard on asari being “available” in ME1. It’s a good counterbalance to have an asari squadmate that isn’t interested.
-Garrus believes that Shepard will win but they’ll definitely lose people.
I look forward to proving him wrong.
-Good turians follow bad orders and know their place. Garrus is a rebel because he argues against bad decisions.
Garrus in fandom is often considered a “yes man” because he always goes along with Shepard’s decisions. Yet his willingness to question Shepard until his concerns are appeased are what make him a bad turian.
Turians that don’t fit in because they argue too much are probably fast tracked for command or tapped for special operations, such as spectres.
-Turian ships have more operations discipline but greater personal freedom.
I’m curious about what this like. How is operation discipline tighter? What personal freedoms do they have?
I don’t know much about miliatry operations. I suppose they’re given less leeway on how tasks are performed.
For personal freedoms – less strict uniform requirements? Able to take drugs while off duty? Fewer restrictions on relationships?
Give me examples, Bioware! I enjoyed those ME1 info dumps.
-Turians are implied to be highly active. Their ships have training rooms for exercise, combat sims, and they engage in full contact sparring.
I’m left with the impression that one of the responsibilities of their leaders is keeping them busy so they don’t find their own distractions. Like how you need to give a livestock dog a job or they’ll find their own. :) Turians need ACTION and will provide their own if not given any. If you want the ship to remain intact, make them burn off that energy.
-When speaking about the scout he sparred with, Garrus casually says the “betters” in the room were not pleased that they kept drawing.
The choice of the word “betters” is telling of the Hierarchy mindset. I bet Garrus casually uses the word “lessers” too and doesn’t mean it as an insult.

Alive, Just to Watch the Bruises Heal - Chapter 2
Whumpuary, Day 12 - Prompt: Old Injuries
Tumblr media
Shepard wants her old scars back, and there's only one person she trusts to do it
Okay, this one is probably the nastiest my whump stories are going to get. Be warned: blood, injury, trauma, and some very bad coping mechanisms.
AO3 Here
Shepard rolled over and looked at Thane. His eyes were closed and his breathing measured, but she didn't think he was asleep. She hadn't taken the anti-hallucinogens Mordin had provided to counteract the toxins in Thane's saliva and sweat, and though the first rush of chemical stimulation had come and gone while they had sex, Shepard was still pleasantly high. Logically, she knew Thane was immune to his own effects, but she couldn't help but wonder what it would feel like to live like this all the time. It was the first time in months she hadn't been in pain.
Shepard's eyes trailed along the shape of Thane's profile: the gentle slope of his brow to the dip of his eyes, his flat reptilian nose and full, smooth lips. By the time her gaze came to rest on his chin, he was looking at her too.
"What are you looking at, Siha?" he asked.
"The most beautiful man I've ever seen," Shepard replied. She hadn't told him that he was the first man she had bedded since her awkward academy years, or that he was the first person to see her naked since Cerberus had pressed her resisting body into service. She had a feeling he knew anyway.
Thane smiled, and reached over to cup her face in his hand. She let her eyes closed and pressed against him so she could feel the strange membrane that joined his middle fingers against her ear. It would be so easy to fall asleep, comfortable and pain-free, but she pushed the temptation away. There was something she had been wanting to take care of and now, with the suicide mission looming, she didn't want to put it off anymore. She leaned forwards and pressed a soft kiss to Thane's forehead, and then got out of bed.
"Shepard?" he asked, sitting up to watch her in confusion as she pulled on a sports bra and underwear. Now that Miranda owed her for saving her sister, she had convinced her to disable the monitoring devices in her bedroom.
"I need to ask something of you," she said without looking at him. She pulled open the bottom drawer of the wardrobe and dipped her hand inside.
"Anything," Thane said. When Shepard stood again, he had slipped out of bed and into his own underwear. She hadn't even heard him move.
"It's still creepy how quiet you can be," she said, and Thane dipped his head in a bashful apology. "And… maybe don't be too quick to agree. You haven't heard what I want yet."
"What do you have behind your back?" Thane asked, gently resting his hand on her arm. He didn't want her to notice, but she could tell he was growing suspicious. She swallowed and took her hands from behind her back to show him the knife.
It was a honed turian blade, used for skinning in traditional wild animal hunts, and Shepard had sharpened it until it rivaled Chakwas' surgical tools. Carefully, Thane took it from her and felt the weight, turning it over in his lightly scaled hands and running a finger along the flat of the blade.
"This is an impressive blade," Thane said. "What is it you want from me, Siha?"
Shepard had to turn away from him before she could answer. She watched the way the cool blue light from the fish tank swirled on the floor grating instead and swallowed the lump of fear swelling in her throat before she said anything. "Before Cerberus got their hands on me, before I… died - " she stopped suddenly, but Thane laid a hand on her shoulder to prompt her to continue. "Before I died, I had scars. Different scars. Scars that Cerberus erased." She turned back to him and looked him in the eyes. "I want them back."
Thane looked from her down to the knife in his hand and then back again.
"Siha, I - "
"I know what you're going to say," Shepard said. "But I'm not me without them. These are marks I got on Elysium, Therum, Ilos, the Citadel. I could have had them removed - hell, Udina offered to pay for the surgery when I got famous so my headshots wouldn't look so off-putting." She took a step towards him and clasped her hand around his wrist. "They're a reminder of everything I've lost. Everything I've fought for. Everything I still fight for."
She stopped and looked at him, pleading, but he shook his head. "You're not lucid, Shepard. My toxins are still in your bloodstream, affecting your judgement."
"I'm not asking this on a whim, Thane," Shepard said softly. "I've been planning this since before we first met."
"Then why ask me?"
Shepard sighed and let go of his wrist. "Mordin could do it. He probably wouldn't even ask questions. Doctor Chakwas, if I could put up with the psych eval she'd put me through. Or Miranda, she gave me all these new scars." She paused to look at him again, hoping he'd see the truth of it in her blown-out pupils. "But I trust you more than any of them. You're the only one I want to trust my body to. My past. And I know you have the precision and skill to do it. I want it to be you."
Thane was silent for a long time, and Shepard had to bite her lip to resist the urge to beg. He turned the knife in his hands while he considered it - considered her - his eyes on the fine edge of the blue-black blade. Was it sharp enough to slice her skin neatly? Could he wield a blade against a woman he loved? Could he stand to make her bleed?
Finally, he held the knife still. "Where?" he said.
"Thank you, Thane," Shepard breathed.
She called up her omni-tool and flicked through the images she had prepared. A lot of them came from official Alliance media just after The Battle of the Citadel, but she'd had to use pictures she'd taken herself for the marks her uniform covered. A lot of them had Liara in them originally.
"Here," she said, enlarging a picture of her leg and rotating it in the air so Thane could see. A pale scar cut along her calf, just below her knee. "This one first."
He knelt and lifted her leg into his lap. The way he touched her now, examining her skin to find the exact angle for the knife, reminded her of how he had treated her in bed: there was that same methodical, conditioned fluidity to his movements that made her feel so safe. He pressed a kiss to her knee and she closed her eyes briefly. While she was distracted, he slashed the knife quickly across her flesh and she gasped in shock.
A glancing slice from the beam of a geth ghost energy weapon, that would have destroyed her knee if aimed just a little better.
"I am sorry," Thane said, but Shepard shook her head and lifted her leg out of his grip, tilting it to look at the new wound. Other than the fresh blood trailing down her calf, it looked exactly the way it used to. Exactly the way it should.
"It's perfect," she said. Maybe it was the drell toxins clouding her mind, but other than a dull ache she didn't even feel it. Thane didn't return her smile, but he did nod in understanding. His past was dark and painful too, and Shepard knew if anyone would understand the need to bear a constant reminder of suffering, it would be Thane. She pulled up the next image.
A new Cerberus scar ran from Shepard's sternum to her belly button, where something had been put inside her and sewn up again, but before there had been a long scar that crossed from under ribs to the centre of her stomach. Thane turned the knife into a reverse grip, kissed Shepard lightly where the cotton of her underwear met her skin, and then quickly stood and made his cut.
A knife fight behind a bar, where a batarian slaver had tried to grab a teenage boy.
The cut hurt more, but Shepard didn't care. She ignored the blood too, this time. The first time she had got that wound it had been deep, and the blood was all she could think about. If the batarian hadn't assumed he'd killed her and run off, she was sure she wouldn't have survived. It was good to have the reminder back where it belonged.
"Another," Shepard said. She had thought she was checking Thane could keep going, but it came out like a demand.
She was about to try again when Thane took her hand and used it to flip to the next image - a high-resolution shot of her face, from her brief time as the Alliance poster girl.
"These are the last three," she said, and left the question implied.
"I understand," Thane said, examining the short scar that traced its way from the side of her neck to her collar bone.
"It stops just here," Shepard said, touching a finger to her own skin and leaving a fingerprint of blood to mark the spot. "I couldn't - " before she could explain that all the topless pictures she still had featured distinctive blue hands on her skin, Thane had slashed her with the knife.
A shot from a rifle that had pierced her hardsuit. If not for the automatic medigel sealing her skin, she would have bled out in minutes. Liara had been there to see it.
Blood seeped into the cotton of her bra and Shepard nodded.
"This one is important," she said. She was starting to feel a tingle in her fingertips, but she knew the Cerberus implants would keep her from losing too much blood.
Thane ran the tip of the knife over the image first, tracing the long cut that traveled down from above her left eye, across her face, over her lips, and down to her chin on the opposite side.
"Siha," Thane whispered.
"I survived it the first time, and it was much worse than it looks," Shepard said. She wasn't prepared for this to end yet, not when she was so close to being complete again.
"It will hurt."
"I know."
"Close your eyes."
Shepard did as she was told, and though she knew the next thing she was going to feel would send her back to that frozen street on Elysium all those years ago, Thane made her feel too safe to care. Instead of the knife, though, he gave her his lips first, pressing them to hers with an urgency he hadn't show her before. She kissed him back, feeling the prickle of the toxin in his saliva spark against her lips. Just as she was wondering if it was intentional - if he was dosing her to keep the pain at bay - the knife interrupted her train of thought.
A spear from kishock harpoon gun, fired from the top of the building next to her, had narrowly missed her head. Instead, it had slashed across her face and turned her skin and muscle to hot pulp. Occasionally she still dreamed about screaming.
Shepard nearly fell to her knees as the sharp pain lanced through her. Unlike the original injury, Thane had deliberately missed her eye, and it was her split-open lips that hurt her the most. Her mouth filled with blood and the iron tang made her feel sick.
"Medi-gel," she managed to burble through the mess, and spat it out as Thane quickly passed the minifacturer of his own omni-tool over her lips, stemming the bleeding in a few seconds.
"We should stop," Thane said.
"I'm fine," Shepard insisted, a little thickly through her numb lips. "You said it would hurt, and it did."
Thane had to understand that it was what she needed. None of the pain came close to the agony of the first few weeks of implant adjustment, and she had waged war across the Traverse without anybody even suspecting anything was wrong. The scars Thane was recreating for her had almost ended her on the days she got them, but in the days since they reminded her she was alive. The cuts hurt now, but every single one made her feel lighter. Better. She couldn't explain it to him, but the last one was the smallest of the lot and stopping now would leave her feeling as incomplete as if Cerberus had left off one of her limbs.
Thane sighed and switched the knife to his other hand. "Last one," he said.
"Last one."
This time he didn't try and make it a surprise - the cut was completely straight, which was maybe unsurprising given who gave it to her, and it meant that Thane needed to steady the blade with his other hand, pressing his palm over the back of the knife to keep it in place. Again, Shepard felt the comforting presence of his webbed middle fingers against her ear, and she smiled at him. Finally, he smiled back. Instead of letting him make the cut, Shepard took a sudden step forwards, and felt the knife dig in and slice through.
Saren's mutated corpse had slashed for her head and she had taken a step back just in time. His longest talon raked across her right cheek in a perfectly uniform arc.
Thane dropped the knife and wrapped his arms around her, welcoming her lips on his despite the blood that smeared onto his skin. It was over. She was back.
"Thank you, Thane," she whispered into his skin, "I know that was hard."
"Anything for you, Siha," he whispered back. They kissed again, but Thane pulled away after far too short a time. "Medigel," he said, and his tone told Shepard that he was not to be argued with. She nodded, and let him take care of her.
The slow application of gel let Thane run his fingers over his handiwork, and Shepard couldn't help but see it as symbolic. He had made her whole again, and now he was healing her old injuries. Making her better. By the end, she was tingling from the drell toxins that had got into her blood when they kissed and she felt warm and delicate from the gentle heat of the medigel. Above all, she felt loved. Thane insisted on taking her to the shower so he could wash of the blood, but she stopped at the fishtank to look at her reflection in the glass.
She looked like she had crawled out of hell, and in a way she had. Blood streaked down her face where the new scars were still a vicious red. It got in her hair and stained her underwear. When she opened her mouth, she could see the stains of red on her teeth. She wondered if this was how she'd looked on Elysium, when they found her broken body.
It felt good to be herself again.

Like a Sailor Lost at Sea
A warmth filled her body as she fell through the dark; A sense of peace followed it, blossoming in her chest. Somehow Shepard knew she was finally free, that she’d fulfilled some unknown service. For once in her life, she could rest.
No more wars to fight. No more people to save. No more expectations to fulfill.
Now she could be at peace.
At some point, the sense of falling became something different, almost like she was floating, suspended in some unknown reality. Soon enough the sense of falling became the opposite. She was rising but through what?
A light broke through the dark, beckoning her forward. Something about it drew her in with a new sense of longing, but it wasn’t her own. Finally reaching out Shepard broke out of the mysterious bubble that surrounded her.
The muffled crashing of waves filled her ears. Her eyes stung from the salt water that surrounded her and her lungs felt strained once more, a feeling she never wanted to feel again. Kicking off of the mysterious bubble Shepard propelled herself towards the light.
A ragged gasp of air filled her lungs as she surfaced. She was surrounded by water. As she began treading in place Shepard looked out across the seemingly endless sea. The darkness now engulfed her again, like a storm blocking out the sun. Heavy winds swirled around her as waves crashed against each other.
Something wasn’t right about this, there was no way she’d fallen back to Earth, she would have burned up long before she crashed into the ocean. No, something was different about this place.
Scanning the horizon Shepard caught sight of the tiniest glittering light, faint as it flashed in even intervals. She moved towards it, pushing herself to swim faster. As the minutes turned to hours and then to days she was left feeling like a sailor lost at sea, abandoned to the deep by the loss of her ship. It would have been disorienting if not for the light ahead of her. Shepard was never one to give up, no matter how small the odds, so she soldiered on like the true marine she was.
It seemed like forever but at some point, land appeared on the horizon. With renewed determination, Shepard surged forward and with each stroke, it got closer, and with it the light. It was almost blinding now, her beacon of hope.
That feeling of longing flooded her chest every time she stopped to stare at it, and with that feeling, she knew it was the home she’d fought her whole life to find. With one final push Shepard reached the warm shallows that surrounded the island and soon enough it was shallow enough for her to stand. So on shaky legs, she marched that final league to the warm white sands and once she reached dry land Shepard hit her knees.
With heaving breaths, her body began to shake. Sand clung to her hands as she braced herself against the ground, the sensation keeping her centered. Her eyes slid shut as she regained herself. The longer Shepard stayed there the stronger she felt, that sense of peace taking her over once more.
Warmth skated across her cheek when the barest touch of a delicate hand swept the wet hair from her face. Another hand came to rest on her shoulder, causing a burst of warmth to radiate through her body from that point
Shepard’s hand instinctively shot out to push the hand away but the other person caught it with an ease she didn’t expect. Lifting her head her eyes were met with the familiar gaze of a man she never expected to see again.
“Thane.” She barely wheezed out his name, her throat sore from her fight with the wild sea.
A soft smile brightened his face. “Hello Siha, I’ve missed you.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Forgive me for taking so long! January ended up being far crazier than expected. @gefionne I really hope you like it! When I saw you were also a FemShep x Thane fan I knew I had to put something together and I got a rush of inspiration to put this together.
Happy late Holidays!
every me, every you, every moment passing through - finale
part 1, part 2, part 3, part 4
There is a very long moment where nobody moves.
Penny catches Malorn’s gaze with a look caught between horror and sudden realization that he’s sure is mirrored on his own face. A shared moment of ah, so that’s what that was.
Had they always been able to do that? At least recently?
Had it been on purpose?
Had it been because of the extra circle?
How had they drawn an additional battle circle and had it work?
“Ashthorn, c’mon, help me carry them out.” Duncan is halfway to the wizard’s body before Malorn manages to break Penny’s gaze and move.
They each thread one of the wizard’s arms around their shoulders. Like the claws of the shadow creature, their fingers and hands are stained blue with spider blood. Their eyes and mouth are running that dark sparkling purple, but it seems to be drying out. Malorn isn’t entirely sure if that’s good or bad…
“There’s a new teleporter in here—” Marla calls from where she’s looking through the hole that had been blown through the dungeon wall. “—one of the big round exit ones.”
“Oh thank the gods.” Malorn mumbles, “Let’s get out of here.”
He and Duncan clamber somewhat akwardly after Marla through the hole, trying not to bump the wizard around too much. Penny follows behind them, arms wrapped around herself.
The exit teleport leaves them all standing outside the moon door inside Nidavellir. Nobody questions why.
The bear standing at the outer doors takes one look at the wizard’s limp form and says he’s escorting them to the King’s Hall. None of them have the energy to protest, but Duncan and Malorn refuse the offer to let him carry the wizard up.
Words are exchanged between their escort and the guard at the door—the Thane, Bjorn Ironclaws—but the doors are swung open and they are led to a side room set up with a small bed. None of the words Malorn hears are really registering. His head is buzzing. Too much happened, and all of it so fast.
Is this what it’s like for them?
All of the time?
“I am told you four rescued our hero from an unexplored depth within Nidavellir.” A rumbling voice greets them in the doorway, and they are met with the King of Bears, Valgard Goldenblade. “Grizzleheim thanks you for that service, we owe much to the wizard for stoping the Coven and the Everwinter.”
“Right.” Malorn just blinks, he’s out of his depth by miles. “Thank you, I’m sure once they’re awake we’ll be on our way.”
Mercifully, the king seems to understand that none of them are used to dealing with this. “Stay as long as you need. The doors of this world are open to you.” He says, and returns to the main hall.
Penny is working on cleaning the blood and starlight from the wizard’s hands, she’s been silent since the fight had ended and is still somewhat glassy eyed. Duncan is in the corner, inspecting some of the strange starlight liquid from the wizard’s face, drawing little symbols in the air and looking increasingly irate when nothing happens.
“So are we just not going to talk about them turning into some kind of monster?” It’s Marla who breaks the quiet. “Or how they broke through a wall into a dungeon already at capacity and then joined the duel by finger painting?”
“I don’t know,” Malorn admits, sitting down on the foot of the bed. “I’ve never seen magic like that—it wasn’t Myth, it didn’t even seem like the Astral stuff we’ve seen them use before.”
“Do you think the spider mage—Lorcan—do you think he was trying to draw it out of them?” Marla asks.
“No,” Penny says softly, “no I don’t think he knew what he was getting into. The same way we didn’t.”
She’s probably right.
Malorn thinks about the flash of fear in all those eyes. “Hey, Penny?”
“Mmm.”
“They’ve usually got a ring on them, full of spiral keys.” It’s a shot in the dark, but a fairly straight one. If anyone could tell them what was going on, it was probably someone the wizard had met more recently than not.
Penny digs a hand into the wizard’s backpack, which is on the floor next to the bed, surfacing with a ring full of mismatched keys. She holds it out to him in silence, the look she’s giving him is enough to know that she understands.
Duncan frowns deeper in the corner, “Ashthorn we just got ourselves beat to dirt by a bunch of spiders—you’re not suggesting—”
“—Do you want to find out what that was or not?” Malorn snaps “We don’t know how long they’ll be out for, we know they weren’t… weren’t like that before Azteca, we can’t go to Azteca, we can go to Khrysalis.”
“No. No way, we could have been seriously hurt in there—and for what?”
“What if it’s killing them?”
“Who cares—they did it—they won, the fight is over! Bring them to the headmaster, tell him they turned into a weird winged beast, and let him deal with it!”
“Duncan—”
“What! Not everything has to revolve around what happens to them! Honestly they’d probably prefer if we just ignored it and moved on! That seems to be their default, pretend things just didn’t happen.”
“Well we can’t!” Penny isn’t usually one for anger, she’s too bright, too worried about what everyone else is doing. “They’ve been throwing themselves into danger and wars and titans know what else since they enrolled—you might not think you owe them anything, you might not think any of us are friends but I do! Malorn does!”
“Then you two can drag yourselves across the spiral without me, see how long you manage.” Duncan shoots back. “I’m not dealing with this anymore—I’m going back to nightside and I’m finding a way through that portal.”
He storms out, Malorn hears the creak of the great doors swinging open, and then slamming shut.
“I’ll go after him.” Marla says, “Either just try and convince him the portal is a dud without them—or else get him to come back. No offense, but please don’t go throwing yourselves at anything until we’re backYou’re both miserable fighters.” She looks reluctant to go, but swings her staff over one shoulder and vanishes into a small explosion of bats.
“You know the levitate cantrip right?” Penny asks once they’re alone, picking up the wizard’s backpack and shouldering it.
“Yep.”
“Perfect.”
~*~
“This is stupid and you know it.” Marla finds him where she expected to. “Exactly how are you expecting to win if you make it through?” Duncan, to his credit, is trying to mimic the wizard’s voice. Failing miserably, but trying. So on some level he’s aware it’s hopeless.
“Once the portal is open I can get help.”
“Yeah, sure, I bet you’re just dying to go running to Susie and Nolan for help.” Marla snorts, “Duncan come on, the best way to do this is going to—”
“—to what? Wait for the wizard to rescue us again?”
“To do this as a group, to do it together, to give all of us closure. Not just the wizard, and not just you.” Marla doesn’t stop the irritation from coloring her words. Duncan acts enough like he’s the only one who cared when they all thought Malistaire had died, like he was the only one betrayed when they were told what he was trying to achieve. “You don’t get to take that away from the rest of us.”
~*~
They’re floating.
Sleep feels like that sometimes.
It’s gentle.
It’s quiet.
Until it’s not.
They’re floating, and it’s not because they’re asleep.
They’re floating and their limbs are all aching and their head feels like it has split down the middle and there is still the faint echo of blood and starlight in their mouth, sour and metallic. There is a faint twinkling noise from below them. The wizard groans, tries to sit up, and falls straight down. Landing with a musical thud on the rainbow bridge that separates Grizzleheim from its spiral door.
How—?
“You’re okay!”
Penny’s voice hits their ears like a siren, and the wizard groans again.
“Why am—wait—” Jumping to their feet makes the world spin, but they look down towards the doors of Nidavellir, barely visible beyond the bridge. “—Lorcan, and the—wait—”
“—It’s alright.” Malorn takes them by the arm and they’re not going to admit it but without the added stability they might be at risk of tumbling right off the rainbow. “You’re safe. It’s over.”
“No.” The wizard shakes their head, squeezing their eyes shut when it makes the pain spike higher. “No, how did you know where to find me?”
“Malorn heard a voice.”
Their eyes snap open.
Brown. Gold. Brown again.
“What voice?”
Malorn leans back just a little, like he isn’t sure why that’s important, like their intensity is concerning. “A—a woman’s voice—she said you were—”
Raven. This had been Raven.
“Have you heard her since then?” Malorn shakes his head and the wizard lets their shoulders drop, lets the tension ebb slightly. “Good. If you do—tell me. I’m not—” they try to take a step and the world spins violently again.
“—Woah, hang on, you’re still really out of it.”
Right.
The shadow circles must have really done a number on them.
“How did we…get out?”
Malorn and Penny share a look that they do not like at all. “What do you remember?” Penny asks.
“I—the last round, and then the circle went out, and—I don’t know, I passed out didn’t I? You all carried me out.” That makes the looks get even worse. “What? What happened? Duncan and Marla are fine right—Lorcan didn’t—”
“—No, no they’re both fine!” Malorn says hurriedly, “Duncan stormed off while you were unconscious and Marla went to find him—we—you—” he lets out a nervous little laugh. “—you kind of—turned into…something.”
“I turned into something.” The wizard repeats blankly, looking between the pair for some kind of context. Any kind of context. When none is offered, the wizard sits slowly back down on the bridge, holding out a hand to both of the others and pulling them down too. “Do either of you know how to use conjuration sigils? I know that’s mainly a myth discipline, but it lets you turn memories—at least, short ones—into something other people can view.”
When neither of them do, the wizard reaches back for their bag, stomach dropping momentarily when they find it missing until Penny slings it off her back. It takes a moment, but they dig out some parchment and charcoal. “Okay, this is the sigil—it’s easy, and it doesn’t take a lot of effort, just—whichever one of you wants to try, just draw it, think of the memory you want, and activate it the same way you would if you were doing a cantrip.”
Penny is the one who does it. She and Malorn exchange one more look like they’re worried about what’s going to happen afterwards. Like they don’t quite want to know.
The dark grey glow of death magic forming a flickering image.
Within it, they can see Lorcan kneeling on his frontmost legs, and something throwing itself at him. Claws digging into the segments of his body and ripping it apart. Something that looks almost like one of the shadow creatures. An amalgamation of them all, winged and clawed and—
—and then it dissolves.
And the wizard sees their own body.
Sees backlash, sees payment for creating the extra dueling rings, slam them into the wall of the dungeon.
Penny waves her hands through the image to banish it just as that happens.
“I—” they trail off, feeling a tremor work its way up their spine and force through their whole form. “—I don’t—I didn’t—” It’s not supposed to come out like that. Uncalled. Unsummoned. It’s supposed to be under control now. They’re supposed to be able to handle it now. If they can’t— gods and starlight if they can’t—
“—Don’t run away again.” Penny says quietly, reaching out for one of their hands and not letting go when they try to flinch back. “We can’t keep doing this.”
Shadow is a dangerous chaos unleashed upon the spiral. Oftentimes too destructive to allow. Its dangers must be understood. Its creator must be dealt with.
Raven’s voice is as soft as usual.
It sends a jolt of white hot anger through the wizard. She had told them to enter the lunar dungeon. She had guided Malorn to Nidavellir in search of them.
…Had she known Lorcan was waiting? Had she sent him here too? Lorcan had wanted them to deal with the wayward spider and his kin. Old Cob, his children, things they don’t have answers for.
What do they fear more?
Facing Malistaire again?
Or the idea that they are not as in control of their magic as they should be.
That they are walking the same razorwire of those before them.
Running away again.
Prodigal Problem Child.
They want to get out of here.
They are in no mood to humor Raven.
So perhaps spiting her is the better option.
What better way than to continue bending the laws of this reality.
“Come with me,” the wizard says quietly, pushing to their feet and taking one of Malorn’s hands with the one they have free. Pulling both him and Penny towards Baldur’s ship. “I should talk to Professor Drake before we go back to Nightside.”
Once more.
For good this time.
Drell headcanon
Taken from Ch5: Little Bird, of Acta Non Verba.
Because I 100% believe Thane would have been on Torfan, taking out more Batarian slavers.
Nihlus awoke again to the shower pipes clanging and the sharp scent of iron. With a heavy sigh, he glanced over from his cot to witness Shepard standing in the shower, the crimson hue of blood mixing with the cascading water at her feet. His gaze travelled upward, absorbing the indelible image of her desperately clawing at her skin, emitting incoherent shrieks about endless black eyes and exploding emerald nebulas.
Taken from Ch18: Catastrophe Theory of Acta Non Verba.
After checking the traffic logs, Nihlus confirmed his suspicion that Saren would have left the Citadel before ordering. “Has someone has ever rescinded a contract?”
When someone contacted The Compact, it was over for the target. The service price was out of reach for everyone except the exceptionally wealthy and of a certain type - the Compact channels were hardly public knowledge. Krios shook his head. “To my knowledge, such an occasion has never occurred.”
“Or I could kill the assassin.”
A laugh. “If you managed to do so, there would only be another. They do not stop.”
“I’d like to test that theory,” retorted Nihlus.
Krios cocked his head. “Then you will watch her die. You cannot bargain or reason with us. We do not feel pity, remorse, or fear. We will find her. That is what we do. It is all we do. They will move through you as though you do not exist to get to her. And she will die.”
Eris takes out a Compact assassin in Ch20: Uncertainty Principle.
"He got the keys to the zoo and sprung me from the cuckoo's nest, you know."
Both of them had sensory advantages over humans, and in the ship's close quarters, Nihlus had learned the many layers of her scent, teaching her to hide them from fellow predators. He laughed, and the Drell pulled his head back a little more. "I do not relish leaving a trail of bodies in my wake. My target is the girl. Do not be a fool."
There was truth in that. Compact assassins were discreet, swift and efficient. Doubting that collateral damage was unacceptable here, Nihlus said. "You're out of your mind if you think my last act will be betraying her."
3,4,5,29 for the OC asks!
hi omg thank you! ask game here
3. What factions are they a part of? Saryn is a member of the Thieves Guild and will later become the Guild Master, Vyrth is the Listener in the Dark Brotherhood.
4. Do you consider them canonically dragonborn? If so, how are they faring at their prophetic duties? If not, what made you decide to do away with that part of the vanilla story? Nope! Neither Saryn or Vyrth is currently considered a Dragonborn, mostly because I wanted to focus on their relationships within the factions/with their love interests without the added pressure of needing to save the world. I've written Dragonborn characters before but the main quest stuff can often feel disruptive to faction based content to me.
5. What were they doing before their adventure officially began? Before her story, Saryn was scraping by in the Grey Quarter. She grew up there and took odd jobs around the neighborhood to save up enough coin to get out, most frequently working as a server in the New Gnisis Cornerclub. (customer service was the most tragic backstory I could come up with.) I'm picking up Vyrth's story after the events of the Dark Brotherhood questline and moving to the Dawnstar Sanctuary - being the Listener, taking contracts, losing the Falkreath Sanctuary, Cure for Madness, etc. She's very shady about what she did before joining the Brotherhood, usually making excuses to not divulge too much personal info.
29. What do they think of Skyrim politics? (Jarls, Thanes, empire, high kings, etc) Neither Saryn or Vyrth are too involved in the political side of Skyrim since they're not Dragonborns. Due to growing up in Windhelm Saryn is pretty skeptical of anyone who strives to involve themselves in politics, finding that it attracts those who usually have an ulterior motive. Vyrth will tell you that she could solve all political strife with a few well placed daggers.
Why Residential Properties in Thane Are a Preferred Choice for Homebuyers
Tumblr media
In recent years, Thane has emerged as one of the most sought-after destinations for homebuyers in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). With its strategic location, excellent infrastructure, and quality lifestyle offerings, residential properties in Thane have seen a significant uptick in demand. This article explores the key factors that make Thane a preferred choice for homebuyers and why investing in this region can be a smart move for families, professionals, and investors alike.
1. Strategic Location and Connectivity
One of the most significant advantages of buying residential properties in Thane is its excellent connectivity. Thane is well-connected to Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, and other key locations in Maharashtra through a robust network of highways, railways, and public transport. The Eastern Express Highway, Ghodbunder Road, and the Thane-Belapur Road facilitate seamless travel, making daily commutes efficient and hassle-free. The presence of the Thane railway station, a major junction on the Central and Trans-Harbour lines, further enhances accessibility.
The upcoming metro lines and infrastructure projects, such as the Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan Metro, are poised to make commuting even more convenient, adding to the overall appeal of residential properties in Thane.
2. Expanding Infrastructure and Urban Development
Thane has witnessed significant infrastructural growth over the past decade, making it a modern urban hub. The development of flyovers, bridges, parks, and recreational spaces has transformed Thane into a well-planned city with top-notch amenities. Several prominent developers have contributed to this transformation by building residential complexes that offer a perfect blend of modern amenities, green spaces, and community living.
From luxurious apartments and spacious villas to affordable housing projects, there is a wide range of residential properties in Thane to cater to the diverse needs of homebuyers.
3. Green and Sustainable Living
Unlike many other densely populated regions in the MMR, Thane offers a greener environment with a large number of parks, gardens, and lakes. Areas like Yeoor Hills and Upvan Lake provide residents with access to nature and opportunities for outdoor activities. This green cover, coupled with efforts to promote eco-friendly and sustainable living, has made Thane a desirable destination for homebuyers seeking a healthier and more relaxed lifestyle.
4. High-Quality Amenities and Lifestyle Offerings
Residential properties in Thane are known for offering world-class amenities that go beyond the basics. Homebuyers can expect features such as swimming pools, gymnasiums, clubhouses, children’s play areas, jogging tracks, and security systems, to name a few. Many residential complexes also promote community engagement with social events, cultural programs, and interactive spaces, fostering a sense of togetherness and making Thane an attractive place for families.
5. Robust Social Infrastructure
Thane’s social infrastructure is another major draw for homebuyers. The city is home to top-rated educational institutions, hospitals, shopping malls, and entertainment centers. Reputed schools like Singhania School and Vasant Vihar High School provide quality education, while hospitals such as Jupiter Hospital and Hiranandani Hospital offer advanced healthcare services. Shopping destinations like Viviana Mall and Korum Mall cater to lifestyle and retail needs, making everyday living convenient and enjoyable.
6. Diverse Residential Options and Price Range
One of the defining features of the residential market in Thane is its ability to cater to diverse budgets and preferences. Whether you are a first-time homebuyer looking for an affordable apartment or a luxury seeker searching for a high-end villa, Thane offers a wide array of residential properties. The competitive pricing in Thane, when compared to central Mumbai, makes it an attractive option for many homebuyers without compromising on quality or amenities.
7. Promising ROI for Investors
For real estate investors, Thane offers excellent potential for returns on investment. The continuous infrastructural development and rising demand for residential properties have contributed to the steady appreciation of property values. The city's growth trajectory indicates that property investments in Thane can yield substantial long-term gains.
Conclusion
Residential properties in Thane offer a perfect blend of connectivity, infrastructure, green living, and modern amenities. As a city that is rapidly transforming into a preferred residential hub, Thane stands out as an excellent choice for homebuyers and investors seeking a high quality of life and promising future prospects.
