Garbo Changes Her Mind! May Be Cast with Clark Gable in Idiot’s Delight!
By Louella Parsons
LOS ANGELES, June 2 – Garbo, who was dead set against playing the Lynn Fontanne role in Idiot’s Delight when it was purchased for her by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, is changing her mind. She wants to do a comedy and realizes now that Miss Fontanne was not caricaturing her but merely giving her own conception of the cockney girl who pretends to be a Russian. I can think of another “accented” actress whom Author Robert Sherwood more than likely had in mind when he wrote his play – but our interest is in MGM’s motion picture. There has been talk that Carole Lombard would co-star with Clark Gable but Missy Carole’s price, we hear, is prohibitive to the studio which has Garbo, Shearer, Loy, Howard and Crawford under contract. So don’t be surprised if announcement is made shortly that Garbo and Gable will be the co-starring sensation of 1937. They haven’t played together since Susan Lenox.

June 7, 1937 – Arizona Republic
In “Saratoga,” Jean Harlow departs somewhat from her usual role of loud-talking, gum chewing gamin. She is more of a lady. An occasional and interested spectator to the scenes between Ms. Harlow and Clark Gable in the picture is Carole Lombard, who goes with Gable…
June 8, 1937 – The Journal Times
No disrespect is intended but this thought comes – even in death there is a display of the tangles and cross-currents caused in Hollywood life by the whirling loom of quick romance and even quicker divorce. Clark Gable, a friend and co-worker of Miss Harlow, is shocked at the news. He turns for comfort to Carole Lombard, reputedly the latest object of his affections, following estrangement from his own wife… And Miss Lombard is the divorced wife of the grief-stricken William Powell, who had been planning to become the fourth husband of Miss Harlow!
June 8, 1937 – Fresno Bee
Gable Pays Tribute
Only last week Clark told some of us at a dinner party at Carole Lombard’s house that Jean was so pleasant to work with, and that she always respected the other players, and was never temperamental or difficult even when she was sick.

Movieland Bids Last Goodbyes at Jean Harlow’s Bier
William Powell Proclaims His Love for Her After Death
GLENDALE, Calif., June 9 (AP) – Beneath gray skies with darkening clouds, those who knew jean Harlow best gathered sadly today for the funeral of the screen’s platinum blonde star.
Through the misty dawn the bronze coffin inlaid with silver, holding the actress’ body, was brought the 10 miles from Los Angeles to Memorial Park here, escorted by police motorcycles.
In the Wee Kirk O’ the Heather Chapel the coffin rested in breathtaking banks of flowers.
It was blanketed with 1500 lilies of the valley and 500 gardenias, which the mother, Mrs. Marino Bello, and Miss Harlow’s sweetheart, William Powell, provided.
A silver plate on the casket bore an engraving of the signature of the 26-year-old glamor girl of the films, cut down at the very height of her career by uremic poisoning.
One of the first to appear in the little chapel of farewells was Warren Baxter. Soon after him came Carole Lombard, then Clark Gable, leading man in her unfinished picture.
Next was Nelson Eddy, whose tribute in the simple services was the singing of “Ah Sweet Mystery of Life,” with Eddy was his companion Jeanette Macdonald, in sad but rich voice saying her farewell in Jean Harlow’s favorite song,” Indian Love Call.”
Soon the 250 intimate friends had passed through the gate. That was all the police permitted within the Memorial Park. Brief was the Christian Science service read by Mrs. Genevieve Smith, for seven years confidante of the actress.
The pallbearers escorting the casket to the mausoleum were those with whom Miss Harlow had worked – Clark Gable, Edward J. Mannix, MGM executive; Hunt Stromberg, producer; Jack Conway and WS Van Dype, directors and Ray June, cameraman.
Interest centered on William Powell, scree actor who made public declaration of his love just after Miss Harlow’s death – “Why did this have to be? I loved her. I loved her.”

Carole Lombard Says She Will Not Be a “Type” in the Movies
By Carole Lombard (Guest Columnist for Robbin Coons)
Hollywood – “From now on, she’s going to be funny.” Somebody wrote that line about me and if I ever catch him I’m going to break his neck. The inspiration came to him just after I’d finished “My Man Godfrey” in which I was hoydenish.
Actually, something did happen during the making of that picture. I found that I was able to break away from Lombard and be the person I was supposed to be on the screen. I dropped the last vestige of my self-consciousness.
But I did not plan just to be funny from that time on. I think I showed that pretty clearly when I stepped into “Swing High, Swing Low.” I was a comic character in that one. But more than that, I hope. There was considerable footage fo tragic stuff. After all, you can’t be very funny when you’re playing a girl in love with someone, and when that someone is a bum, and walking out of your life on top of that.
Refuses to be a “type”
My new picture is “True Confession.” It’ll have humor and plenty of it. But I’m certainly not going to run riot on one single shade of emotion when there are so many more in the book. I’m going to sample quite a few of them. The script isn’t being written “to make the lines sound as if Lombard would say them.” It’s being written for a character I’m going to play.
Why? Because I’m not going to type myself. Typing means standing still. The public says, “There’s no use seeing her again, I’ve seen her last three pictures and they’re all alike.” And when you’re standing still you’re going backward, because Hollywood is fast and people are going to the right and left of you, passing you and getting ahead.
Aims for “surprises”
The idea, in Hollywood, is always to be new and slightly different. I’ll be all right as long as the public says, “She’s full of surprises.” When I don’t surprise them, you can count me out. That’s why I got sore when somebody wrote “From now on, she’s going to be funny.” It might just as well have been, “She’s going to be the same forever.” That’s practically libel, in this business.
Understand, I know my limitations. I don’t care for the “prestige” pictures. I don’t want to do a film which is supposed to be epic, colossal, or terrific. I can’t imagine myself a Duse or a Bernhardt. I’ll leave that ot the other little girls. But you can depend on this: as long as there’s breath in my body, I’ll try to make people say: “Have you seen the latest edition of Lombard?”
June 17, 1937 – Rogersville Review
CLARK GABLE’S IDEAL WIFE
Clark Gable, the screen’s great lover, who has had some of Hollywood’s loveliest as cinema wives, made a list of the things wives should have.
Gable whose first two marriages went the way of all flesh says: “First of all a wife must be a pal. She should enjoy the things you do. She must have a sense of humor. She must not bother about ashes on the floor or clothing not hung up. She must smile at unexpected guests for dinner. She should never sulk when he has financial setbacks. She must dress as her husband wants her to look.”
Memo to Carole Lombard. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to cut the above out and keep it for reference and future use.
June 17, 1937 – Los Angeles Times
… Carole Lombard and Clark Gable window shopping along Hollywood Boulevard…
June 19, 1937 – The Californian
(snippet of a longer article)
First, we have to eliminate Clark Gable. If you don’t make the mistake of including him among the ranks of Hollywood’s best catches, others will. Fifty million women have assume that at last they have what they’ve always wanted – a chance with Gable.
But don’t rush him. Although he’s separated from Mrs. Gable, he’s still a married man. When, and if, Mrs. Gable ever does get a divorce, Clark isn’t apt to rush into headlong into another halter. According to his own statements, he’s too fond of doing as he likes, and of going hunting and fishing with the boys whenever he feels like it.
At the moment, Carole Lombard is his palsy-walsy and they have a barrel of fun together. But with Carole another marriage is a question too. “I suppose I would,” she says, “if the right man came along.” But whether or not Mr. Gable is the right man, Carole doesn’t say.
In the meantime, she’s a million dollar bachelor girl herself, with an income of $300,000 a year from Paramount, and there’s a clause in her contract which permits her to make a picture off the lot for which she may ask her own price.
However, not many women have much sympathy for Carole. To have had William Powell for a husband, and Clark Gable for a beau, all in one lifetime – t’aint fair!
June 25, 1937- Miami News
Carole Lombard, who is co-starred with her ex-husband William Powell in “My Man Godfrey,” which is now showing at the Rosetta theater, receives $150,000 a film on her Paramount home lot, and double that amount when loaned to another studio. She will not act in a film unless she feels reasonably sure of its success. She held up production on “My Man Godfrey” six months while the story was rewritten five times. Miss Lombard’s current gentleman friend is Clark Gable, but she is not over-anxious to remarry, as she believes it is a whole-time job, and she enjoys her film work too much to give it up for any man.
June 29, 1937 - San Francisco Examiner
CHATTER IN HOLLYWOOD:
How do you think Carole Lombard leaves the studio every evening? In a limousine with liveried chauffeur? No, indeed. Clark Gable, who is working at MGM only a block away from the Selznick Studios, calls for her usually in a station wagon with guns, tents, and other camping paraphernalia hanging out the back. But Carole doesn’t mind. Life to her is a lot of laughs, anyway. She and Freddie March spend all their free time on the “Nothing Sacred” set practicing with BB guns, so it’s almost worth your life to visit that set.

A SIMPLE HOLLYWOOD BLACKMAIL SCHEME TURNS DEADLY
Morocco Jones figured this assignment would be a breeze. After all, sending a guy who specialized in busting up crime syndicates and international spy rings to Los Angeles to track down some two-bit blackmailer seemed like using a cannon to kill a mosquito. To Morocco, it seemed like a good excuse for a nice little Hollywood vacation—catch a bit of sun, bed a few starlets, and relax poolside with a large snifter of brandy.
But Morocco couldn't have been more wrong! Because this was no two-bit blackmail scheme. The half a billion-dollar payoff—for whoever was behind the plot—was money worth killing for. From the moment Morocco Jones hit fabulous movieland, things began to explode in some very strange and terrifying directions.
First, there was the reception committee of musclemen who waylaid Morocco in the dark right outside his client's fancy Spanish villa. Next was the ex-hood who had become high-priest of a powerful and sinister religious cult that didn't draw the line even at murder when it came to keeping its secrets secret. Then, there was the scandal sheet that raked in the do-re-mi from the studios—for the truly scandalous stories it didn't print about Screenland's kings and queens. Add in a crooked cop named Doheny who didn't like Morocco's lip, and the unsolved double murder of a famous screen beauty and her husband that tied into it all somehow. Nor could Morocco overlook the incendiary blond starlet in the oh-so revealing dress who seemed to have slept with half his suspects and was always one step ahead of him, wherever he went.
There were a lot of angles to figure, even for an operative like Morocco Jones—and his only hope of solving it was a lush out cold from a 10-day bender and a raw cub reporter who looked more destined to end up being written about in the Obits than getting his by-line on the story of the year—when and if it broke. This was a case with the distinct odor of an organized blackmail ring with syndicate tie-ups.

In the 1930s Ivor Novello was named Britain’s handsomest screen idol for his work in films. He was also a prolific writer, creating songs and lavish operettas. In 1914, Novello wrote the patriotic “Keep the Home Fires Burning”. It was an instant hit due to the First World War. It made Novello famous.
Novello got a two year contract with MGM in Hollywood but the studio bosses thought he “too English” for leading man roles. So he became a screenwriter and script doctor. His best known film script was for “Tarzan The Ape Man” (1932). So despite Having a reputation for sophisticated dialogue, Novello was reduced to creating one-liners for Johnny Weissmuller. Yes, Novello is responsible for “Me Tarzan, You Jane”.
Of his time in Movieland, Novello admitted, "I never wrote such rubbish in my life”. His stint at MGM was his "greatest failure".
“I came away knowing that obscurity and I were bad companions.”
At this time Novello became good friends with Vivian Holman, a young actress. At his suggested she decided to use Vivian Leigh as her stage name.
Novello was gay, an open secret in theater circles. He was known to have many lovers (including a one night stand with Winston Churchill if you can believe it). But his life partner was Bobbie Andrews. Andrews then introduced Novello to Noel Coward. The two became close friends and became collaborators, writing songs and musicals together.
Novello and Andrews were together for 35 years, often throwing its lavishness parties at their country estate where there was a steady supply of drugs, alcohol, and gay antics.
Novello died suddenly from a heart attack at the age of 58.
The Ivor Novello Awards for songwriting were created in his memory in 1955 given to British songwriters and composers as well as to an outstanding international music writer. The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art created a scholarship in his in 1952.

REMINISCING
August 14, 1977
By Frank Swertlow, Chicago Daily News
BEVERLY HILLS - During the first years of television, Ed Wynn, the radio and stage comic, was trying to break into television with a half-hour comedy on CBS. (1)
One night, he invited a couple of second echelon performers to make an appearance: a comedienne, known as "Technicolor Tessie" for her blazing red hair, and a song-and-dance man, best remembered for hollering "babalu."
Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz were the couple, and they, like Wynn, were sampling the waters of the new medium. CBS had asked Miss Ball and her conga-drum pounding husband to develop a comedy show for television. Later, after months of thought and testing their ideas on the vaudeville circuit, the couple came up with "I Love Lucy," the misadventures of Lucy and Ricky Riccardo. (2)
It made its debut on CBS in October 1951. More than a quarter of a century afterwards, "I Love Lucy" easily can vie for the honor of television's most successful show. It was the archtype [sp] domestic comedy, the bumbling husband and his daffy wife. It gave birth to two other Lucy shows, a host of specials and a giant production company, Desilu.
"We spent months thinking about what we should do," Miss Ball recalled. "We didn't want to be the average Hollywood couple. Nobody would think you had any problems if you had a car and swimming pool and a nice house.
"Ultimately, we wanted a show in which people could identify with us. Everybody could understand what it was like to struggle for a buck. I was an ordinary, everyday, middle class housewife. I wore the same dress often. My husband worked and tolerated my mistakes. It was something that everyone could identify with."
With the debut of the TV series, Lucille Ball, the former Goldwyn girl who started her film career in the 1930s, had a new career.
"I never expected the show to go more than a year," said Miss Ball. "I wanted to do the show on film so I could use them as home movies. Who knew about television then? It was a no-no to do TV work. The movie studios were against it."
To Miss Ball, who was not a new face to the public, the impact of her show was incredible. "We went to New York on a trip once and we were unprepared for what happened. People rushed up and wanted to touch you. They knew you, and called you by your first name. I had been in pictures for years, and most of the time I was never identified."
If the movers and shakers of the film industry who gave Miss Ball her start during the 1930s were alive, they would have been shocked. To them, simply and kindly, Lucille Ball was a B-movie queen, one of the many second-line actresses who never attained star billing, but who was an important ingredient to the motion picture industry.
Unlike many performers who labored under the cruel studio system, Miss Ball fondly remembered her early years in Hollywood. "It was nice to be under the umbrella of a studio. You always had a poppa. I loved it. I loved being part of the business. I would have swept floors just to be in it."
Miss Ball, however, did not forget the tactics of the brutal and disgusting lords of movieland. Harry "King" Cohn, the ruler of Columbia Pictures, stood out. "He made the biggest dent in everybody. He was ruthless. He always had to take a devious route." (3)
Miss Ball, who is not exactly a pushover, laughingly recalled the time she outwitted the sly Cohn.
Miss Ball had received an offer to work in a Cecil B. DeMille film, but Cohn refused to loan her to the producer. He was being mean. Then, Cohn decided to drop her contract. To do it, he sent the actress a horrible script something that the trade called a lease breaker. "Oh, everybody was dying to play opposite John Agar and Raymond Burr," she recalled jokingly. "I was going to be a harum [sp] girl." Naturally, Cohn expected her to refuse and it would be the end of her contract. (4)
The savvy Miss Ball decided to do the film and collect her check. When she made this announcement there was an uproar. She coyly told her bosses: "Oh, I want to do the film. It's a wonderful film."
Meanwhile, Miss Ball, who had been trying to get pregnant for years, found out she was going to have a baby. Now, she was in trouble. If Cohn found out, he would break her contract. "I only told my mother and my husband I was pregnant."
Keeping her lips sealed, she went ahead with Cohn's film. "The wardrobe girl kept looking at me in my harum [sp] girl costume and saying, 'What's wrong with you, you are getting so big.' "So, I told her, 'Don't worry, I ate a big meal last night. Just put a little more taffeta on my dress.' Well, I finished the film and I collected my $85,000."
"Then I had to go to Mr. DeMille and tell him I couldn't do his film. I was pregnant. 'What,' he said. And I replied. 'I'm going to have a baby. 'Get rid of it,' he said. And he was serious.' She declined. (5)
While Miss Ball's career as a TV star is secure (she still has a contract with CBS) (6) she is not so certain about the state of the industry. Today, unlike when she started on the air, shows are yanked off the screen within a couple of weeks. This, she said, destroys performers.
"If a show is canceled, the actor takes the blame. He or she suffers for it. They suffer inside. The rejection - they failed. (7)
"I would fail. You can't protect yourself. It's out of your hands. It's always Lucy failed or Rhoda failed or Farrah Sauset Fawcett Sauset, whatever her name is, failed. It's rough." (8)
Even so, Lucille Ball, the red-haired girl from Jamestown, N.Y., would still be on top.

FOOTNOTES FROM THE FUTURE
(1) Ed Wynn (1886-1966) was a vaudevillian who hosted “The Ed Wynn Show” on television from 1949 to 1950. Lucy and Desi guest-starred on the show.
(2) ‘Riccardo’ is probably a misspelling of ‘Ricardo’, but it was also the way their surname was spelled on “I Love Lucy” in early episodes!
(3) Harry Cohn (1891-1958) was a much-despised executive at Columbia Studios. Lucille Ball once facetiously told Louella Parsons that she liked Harry Cohn too much to ever sign a contract with him. What Lucille meant is that Cohn had a reputation for being difficult. Despite that fact, a casting draught forced her to sign with Columbia in 1949.
(4) Lucille Ball had often complained to Cohn about the quality of the pictures she had been doing at Columbia. At the time The Magic Carpet was made, Ball was only obligated to Columbia for one more film, and Cohn had producer Sam Katzman, who turned out most of Columbia's low-budget "B" pictures, concoct a cheap Arabian Nights fantasy as a punishment to Ball for her constantly challenging him. More salacious writers insist that Cohn’s frustration with Ball was due to the fact that she would not submit to him sexually.
(5) The DeMille film in question was The Greatest Show on Earth, a movie set at the Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey circus. Lucille was set to play the elephant trainer, a role that went to Gloria Graham. It was a film Lucille really wanted to do - but she wanted a baby more. Later in life, Desilu created a TV version of the film. Lucille also guest-starred as the ringmaster on “Circus of the Stars II” in which Lucie Arnaz was featured as.... the elephant trainer!
(6) Lucille Ball had started working at CBS on radio and was considered their premiere star. In 1980, after her television shows had ended, she signed with NBC, a partnership that yielded very little except that Ball was obliged to appear on Bob Hope’s many specials, something she frequently did anyway. Both CBS and NBC declined her final series “Life With Lucy” which producer Aaron Spelling finally convinced ABC to air.
(7) Although this article was written ten years before “Life With Lucy”, Lucille could very well be describing her own devastation when the series was cancelled even before all the initial episodes aired. She was widely criticized and the series often turned up on “worst show” lists.
(8) Rhoda refers to a character on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” that was played by Valerie Harper, a performer that appeared on Broadway with Lucille. In 1974, the character was spun off into its own eponymous sitcom which aired for four seasons.
Farrah Fawcett-Majors was a beautiful blonde actress and poster girl that burst onto the TV scene in the mid-1970s. A year after this interview, she was in the hit series “Charlie’s Angels” entering American iconography for her feathered hair and curvaceous figure the same way Betty Grable had in the 1940s.

Sunday Spotlight: The Great Movie Ride
Sunday Spotlight: The Great Movie Ride
The Great Movie Ride was an opening day attraction at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. The nearly 22-minute attraction was a celebration of the history of movies. It included famous scenes from iconic movies as guests re-lived some of cinema’s most memorable moments. It was inside the recreation of Grauman’s Chinese Theatre at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

CCelebrity Encounters Part 2 I’ll start off with this picture of Cliff Robertson that I took in December of 1963. My dad and I had gone down to Orange County for the opening of The Movieland Museum of The Air (I think tha was the name). There were actual planes, and replica planes from various movies. Mr Robertson was there as he had donated an aircraft. I came across him out on the tarmack, talking to these other gentlemen. I remember seeing him using his hands to describe a manuever. I snapped the picture while he talked and then asked if he would sign my book. He very nicely obliged. Mel Torme, The Velvet Fog as he was sometimes known, was also there near Mr Robertson. Unfortunately, while I did get his autograph, I did’t get a picture of him.
It was several more years before I had another encounter with a celebrity. In 1972 my mom got tickets for us to see Carol Burnett tape one of her shows. Unfortunately, or so we thought, my mom broke her ankle shortly before the date we were to go. That wasn’t going to stop her however. So off we went to CBS Television City with a wheelchair. I was selling Avon at the time, and I thought I’d give Carol and her then husband, Joe Hamilton, some fragrances in collector bottles. That is, IF I got to be on-stage with her. At the studio, one of the pages wheeled Mama into a space at the top of the seating. I was seated next to her, on the aisle. When Carol did her question and answer segment I stuck my hand up, waving frantically. She actually saw me and I got to ask my question which was, “May I give you a present?” She said yes, and I scurried down the aisle and up the stage side stairs to stand in front of her. Talk about nervous. I did giver her the bottles of cologne (which she probably got rid of later) and I think she shook my hand. To this day, I couldn’t tell you what her dress looked like..I was staring at her earring while trying to sound composed. Anyway, I then made my way back up the aisle where we enjoyed the rest of the show. Burt Reynolds was a guest star that night. Wheee! After the show was over, the studio page came to us and wheeled Mama out through the backstage area. We ran into Carol back there!! She stopped and talked to us for a few minutes and signed Mama’s cast. I wish I still had that piece. I did pick up several pieces of “sugar glass” that were scatterd on the floor. They were pieces of a window that Burt crashed through, on purpose, during the skit he was in. I don’t know if the pieces were ever in direct contact with him, but if not, they’re close enough. I wrote to Carol afterwards to thank her for being so sweet to my mom, and to me. She sent me an 8x10, autographed, picture of herself and one of Harvey Korman. Carol’s says To Chery and Harvey’s just has Love, Harvey Korman.
Later that same year, Mama (out of the cast and wheelchair) went to see Glen Campbell tape one of his shows. We were seated in about the second row of the audience and during a break in the taping I asked him if he would sign my book. He laughed, said he wasn’t supposed to but he would do it anyway. As he was doing that, Dom De Luise came up behind and him and asked if he could sign it too! Well, of course, I stammered Yes. Gee, to have someone ASK ME if they could sign my book! That was a thrill.

Jahrhunderts galten
inklusive neuer Achterbahn. April 2019. Vom drei. 25.03.2019 - Intraoralscan -- 3D-Modell -- ZE Krone -- Schiene in
zwei Stunden CADSPEED-Roadshow 2019 erfolgreich gestartet.
sowieso alles gibt. In unseren Herzen brennst du niemals ab, Europapark!
zahlreiche Events statt.
all deren Freunde eingeführt.
