The little red building from the Athens Lumber Company may never have been a schoolhouse, but the people who saved it from demolition say they're still committed to restoring and reusing it. The building, dating from the late 1800s, was relocated last year by a group of area residents and now sits near the bike path on West Union Street. When Ohio University purchased the lumber company site in 2000 and announced it would demolish the buildings to create a parking lot at the present site of the University's Human Resource and Training Center at the corner of West Union and Factory Streets in Athens, the Save the Little Red Schoolhouse group formed. The group raised money from the city, Ohio University, and other donors, and succeeded in removing the building before it was destroyed. Hamilton House Movers moved the building to its current location in 2001. The schoolhouse group hoped to restore the building and use it as a way station for bicyclists. Many believed that the building was once a school for young children and had been moved from the grounds of the former Athens High School (current site of the middle school) to the lumber company property after being sold. Further research cast doubt on whether the building was ever used as a schoolhouse, as had been previously thought. Such a building did exist, although its fate is unclear. Actually that building was bought by a man, and he did take it away. But the question is, where did he take it?

There has been some doubt about the relocated building's former use from the beginning. Photographs in a publication, "Athens County Illustrated," appear to show the relocated "schoolhouse" on the lumber company property in 1897. The actual schoolhouse, which came from the grounds of the former high school, was probably not moved until 1898. Some wonder if the true history of the rescued building would ever be known for sure, or even which building was which. Despite this, the project still makes sense as a way to encourage community spirit and tourism. The city's $15,000 allocation for the project was not a bad investment. The restoration of the salvaged building brought together members of the Athens community who treasure connections with the city's past. The preservation group began repairs on the building's exterior after local architect John Valentour completed first-stage plans for the restoration. The former storage shed, once thought to be a school house, was moved from the Athens Lumber Company about one-half mile west on West Union Street in 2001, and is now the offices of Athens County Habitat for Humanity. The building sits adjacent to the Adena-Hockhocking bike path, and its restrooms and water fountain are open to the public.

Long active in chess promotion, Sanborn had curtailed his activities in recent years, but the stamp of his personality remains on much of New England chess. Frank Sanborn was the first man to institute an annual tournament for the chess championship of Boston. He began the series of schoolboy tournaments in Boston and broadened the coverage until he established a state-wide meet. For some years Sanborn was president of the New England Chess Association and in that time popularized the Swiss-style tournaments which now dominate the chess scene. The catalog of his labors is long. Harry Lyman, Saugus, said, “Frank Sanborn was always in the thick of things. Most people have forgotten he was one of the prime movers in bringing to Boston the 1938 U.S. Open Chess tournament. But to me his happiest actions seemed to be inspired by his concern for and support of the young players. Frank had a fine sense of history.”
