Der dunkle bernsteinfarbene Mount Gay XO Triple Cask Blend begrüßt mich aus dem Noising-Glas mit einer feinen alkoholischen Schärfe und der Geruch von Eichenholz kommt mir entgegen. Zu dem Eichenholz-Aromen kommt noch eine Spur dunkle Schokolade und ein Hauch Vanille hinzu. Vervollständigt wird das Bukett mit den Aromen von Kokosnuss und trockenen Sherry. Gibt dem Rum einige Minuten an den Luft und die alkoholische Schärfe verflüchtigt sich und das Fruchtige stellt sich mehr in den Vordergrund. Der erste Schluck erinnert mich an trockenes Eichenholz und eine angenehme Schärfe wird von einer fruchtigen Süße am Gaumen begleitet. Die fruchtige Süße ist ein Mix aus süßen Weintrauben, Bananen und dunkler Schokolade. Die Konsistenz ist leicht samtig und minimal ölig. Auch die Fasslagerung des Rums hinterlässt seinen Geschmack und ich schmecke leicht rauchige Noten von verkohlten Holz und eine minimale Bitterkeit heraus. Das Finish zieht mich in seinen Bann und eine ganze Zeit lang schmecke ich zum Schluss die Aromen von Tabak, kalten Rauch und eine Spur Frucht in Form von reifen süßen Birnen. Fazit: Der Mount Gay Rum XO Triple Cask Blend besitzt ein reichhaltiges Aromenprofil. Geschmacklich ist er recht ausgewogen und das Fruchtige harmoniert gut mit dem Holzigen und sorgt so für ein unvergessliches Trinkerlebnis. Where has Mount Gay Rum been all my life? I'm the one who was tardy to the rum party since Mount Gay was established in 1703. Their master blender, Trudiann Branker, came though NYC to lead us through a tasting of some of the rums that have the same great taste with her special touch. The rum makes fabulous cocktails and the XO is perfection when served neat. Loved every minute of it. And I have to add that Branker is the first female master distiller in Barbados. Cheers to the Citrus Crush from Menu Barbados 🍹

1 ½ oz. XO Mount Gay rum 1 oz. falernum 3 slices orange, with peels and seeds 2 slices lemon, with peels and seeds 2 slices lime, with peels and seeds 3 oz. soda water 1 strip lime peel, to garnish 1 slice lemon, to garnish 1 maraschino cherry, optional,  to garnish

Instructions Chill a Martini glass with ice. Muddle together the rum, falernum and fruit in a cocktail shaker. Add the ice from the Martini glass and shake the cocktail. Stir in the soda water. Strain the cocktail into the chilled glass with fresh ice. Garnish with a twist of lime peel, a slice of lemon and a cherry on a skewer.

Daily MCO Drink #306, ‘MCO Day #308: CORN & OIL, made with 1.5 parts Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva, 1/2 part John Taylor’s Velvet Falernum, 2 dashes Angostura Bitters, shaken over ice and strained over fresh ice, 1/2 shot Mount Gay Black Barrel rum floated on top with a squeeze of lime. . Usually made with black strap rum from Barbados, which is floated in top like an oil patch. But since I didn’t have that I just floated Mount Gay Black Barrel on top instead. . It’s rum. A lot of rum, in fact, with falernum. And a bit of lime.
