A Plethora of Upgrades Transform this 1968 Mustang GT Into a Stallion

Way back in the Paleolithic Age, before Ben Franklin invented electricity and Al Gore put it to good use inventing the Internet, people scoured their local newspaper’s classified section in search of cool cars. One such practitioner of this ancient art was New Yorker Brian Commisso, and in 1986 an ad for a certain 1968 Mustang caused his heart to flutter with abandon. “The car for sale was a 1968 Shelby,” he explains, “so I immediately grabbed my buddy and went to see it.”

Brian, who was erudite beyond his years, courtesy of HOT ROD magazine and other, similarly-infallible sources of automotive knowledge, needed all of two seconds to recognize that the very rusty Shelby on offer was genuinely very rusty but not genuinely a Shelby. “I wasn’t interested in the clone,” he recalls, “but the owner had another Mustang under a tarp that caught my eye. Further inspection revealed that it was an original S-code 390 big block with a top-loader four-speed and 9-inch rear end. It was about ten different colors, but it was an original GT, and it was all there!”

Following a successful test drive Brian was able to subdue his enthusiasm sufficiently to induce the seller to sweeten the deal with a shed full of high-performance parts, including 428 Cobra Jet heads, a police interceptor crank, a 2×4 intake complete with carbs, a tri-power setup with all of its linkage, and a set of GT wheels and hub caps. After agreeing on a price, he brought his prize home and immediately began restoring it.

Though he had no formal training, Brian did learn plenty from his father, who worked as a Porsche mechanic in California during the early 60s. Growing up in car-centric Long Island also taught him plenty, including deep appreciation for fast cars and performance modifications. “One of my best car memories,” he recounts, “is from when I was about ten years old. On Friday nights, we would go out to dinner. This particular night, we were out on Sunrise Highway stopped at a light, and the two cars in front of us were revving their engines. I quickly noticed a ’68 Chevelle pairing up against a ‘67 Sting Ray. The light turned green, they went, and I was hooked. The people on the sidewalk watching the action were standing outside of a building called Baldwin-Motion.”

The mostly-stock body hides heavy modifications to engine, drive train, suspension, brakes, and interior.

Over a span of several years, Brian went through his Mustang and systematically returned it to as-new condition, with a few light upgrades added in. In 2001, he began showing the car, starting with a Shelby show at Lime Rock Park in Connecticut. “The show had original Cobras, Daytona Coupes, GT40s, and hundreds of Mustangs, but people swarmed all over my car. I won not only best-in-class but also best-in-show. My girlfriend, who later became my wife, jumped into my arms, congratulating me with the biggest kiss!”

In the ensuing years, Brian continued showing and driving his Mustang, but by 2010, the car began showing signs of wear, so he decided to go through it again. This time around, however, he made far more extensive modifications.

A TCI front and TCP rear coil-over suspension delivers superb handling and ride quality.

Brian wanted dramatically more power than the GT’s original 390 produced and found it in a 526 cubic-inch FE engine built by Dave Kogan at Kogan Motorsports in Island Park, New York. The foundation of this impressive power plant is a CNC machined 356 T6 aluminum block topped by medium riser aluminum heads. The bottom end includes a billet steel Eagle crankshaft and Eagle forged 4340 H-beam rods with ARP 2000 bolts. Domed 13:1 Mahle pistons complete the rotating assembly. A Comp Cams valve train, including a solid roller camshaft grind, roller rockers, dual springs, and 2.250-inch intake /1.750-inch exhaust valves fill the A-356 alloy heads. Originally built with a single plane intake and  Holley carburetor, Brian later decided to go with an eight-stack Weber intake manifold and TWI fuel system that includes TWI throttle body, mass airflow sensor, fuel rail and injectors, and an Aeromotive A1000 pump. The whole setup is managed by a FAST XFI 2.0 controller. A March Performance FrontRunner kit drives all accessories, including a Shelby water pump, 100-amp alternator, and Vintage Air A/C compressor. Spark comes from a FAST ignition box working with an MSD coil and distributor. Waste gas is sent on its way courtesy of custom made, Jet-Hot ceramic coated, long-tube headers, 3-inch pipes, an H-pipe with side cutouts, and Borla mufflers.

The 1968 Shelby Brian Commisso went to look at was a clone, so he cut a deal to buy this car instead- a genuine S-Code 390 GT.

Joe Rutner, of South Shore Performance in Freeport, New York, dyno-tuned the engine, unleashing a potent 747-horsepower at the flywheel, and 650-horsepower to the rear wheels, which is considerably more than double the 325 horsepower the car’s original 390 engine delivered. The big mill’s twist goes through a Hurst-shifted, TREMEC TKO five-speed via a dual-disc McLeod clutch and aluminum flywheel. For safety’s sake, the clutch package resides in a Lakewood scatter shield. A custom driveshaft links the TREMEC’s output shaft to a Moser rear end, built up with 3.73:1 gears, a locker differential, and 31-spline axles.

In keeping with the plan to upgrade this Mustang’s complete performance envelope, Brian addressed its inherent suspension and steering deficiencies. The original front suspension gave way to a TCI Engineering Pro Touring IFS arrangement, which features custom, 2.5-inch drop spindles, a 1.4-inch anti-sway bar, divorced steering arms, heliarc welded cradle and control arms, rack-and-pinion steering, and QA1 coilover shocks.

The 1968-1/2 Cobra Jet hood scoop isn’t factory, but it looks right at home on this car.

In the rear, Brian chose to go with a Total Control Products g-Bar 4-link setup, which lowers the rear of the car 2.5-inches to match the front. QA1 coilovers and a 0.75-inch sway bar help keep the rear wheels planted at all times. A ten-point, welded-in roll cage ties the whole chassis together and adds considerable structural rigidity, further enhancing the car’s handling prowess.

For stopping power, Brian turned to Wilwood. Slotted and vented 12-inch rotors are squeezed by four-piston calipers in both the front and rear, courtesy of a power-assisted 1-1/8-inch bore Wilwood master cylinder.

The car sits on BR series wheels from Vintage Wheels, patterned after the pin-drive, knock-off wheels that carried GT40s to victory at Le Mans and elsewhere in the 1960s. These wheels, which are pressure cast for greater strength, measure 17×8 in front and 17×10.5 at the rear. The fronts wear Sumitomo 225/45-17 tires and the rears are shod with Mickey Thompson SS rubber measuring 275/40-17. All four corners have 4.4” backspacing and that, combined with rolled fender lips all around, keeps the tires clear of the bodywork.

Aside from the rolled fender lips and a 1968-1/2 Cobra Jet hood scoop, the only other body work done to this car was a new Dynacorn quarter panel, installed to address minor rust. The rest of the sheet metal was rust free and straight, so all it needed was normal surface preparation for paint. That, and the paint job was done by Keith at K & M Autocraft in Deer Park, New York. At Brian’s request, the car’s original Highland Green color was slightly modified with the addition of light metal flake.

Brian turned to Sunrise Auto Upholstery in Lynbrook, New York to upgrade the interior in both form and function, while still retaining an overall vintage look and feel. Leather covered Corbeau seats provide far more support than the originals, and the high backs include slots for RCI Racing shoulder straps, which are part of the car’s 3-inch wide, 4-point harness. A 15”, 9-bolt Moto-Lita steering wheel looks right at home, as does the full complement of AutoMeter Sport Comp gauges.

Since getting the car back on the road several years ago, Brian has relished every moment with it. He’s had great success showing the car, both locally and out of state, and has enjoyed every bit of its fantastic performance, with a memorable ticket or two to prove it. Whether sharing it with others on a show field, or winding up that big block Shelby and running through the gears, this car is exactly what he envisioned when he set out to build his dream Mustang.

Comparison : Xiaomi Redmi 4 Vs Samsung Galaxy On8 Vs Motorola Moto G5 Vs Lenovo K6 Power Vs Samsung Galaxy J7 Vs Xiaomi Redmi 4A

Xiaomi Redmi 4 is finally launched in India, this may be yet another great option for those looking to buy a smartphone under Rs. 10,000. As per Xiaomi tradition, the new smartphone Redmi 4 offers a big battery, new processor (for the price tag), and enough variants to fit different price brackets. But Xiaomi Redmi 4 is not the only budget smartphone worth considering at this price point. Ahead of its availability on May 23, we pit the smartphone against its competition – Moto G5, Lenovo K6 Power, Samsung Galaxy J7, Samsung Galaxy On8 and Xiaomi Redmi 4A – to see how it fares. Here’s how the comparison:

Xiaomi Redmi 4 Specifications

Xiaomi Redmi 4 is like a mini version of the Redmi Note 4. This smartphone sports a metal unibody design similar to the Redmi Note 4 series, except this one has a 5-inch HD display compared to the former’s 5.5-inch full HD one.

The dual-SIM (Micro+Nano) Xiaomi Redmi 4 runs MIUI 8 based on Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow. Redmi 4 sports an full-metal body and a fingerprint sensor on the rear panel. Redmi 4 comes with 5-inch HD (720×1280 pixels) 2.5D curved glass display, and is powered by a 1.4GHz octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 435 SoC coupled with 2GB/ 3GB/ 4GB of RAM.

The Redmi 4 sports a 13-megapixel rear camera with f/2.0 aperture, PDAF, and LED flash, and On the front, it bears a 5-megapixel front camera with f/2.2 aperture. As we mentioned, the Xiaomi Redmi 4X will be available in 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB inbuilt storage options, expandable via microSD card (up to 128GB).

Connectivity options on the Redmi 4 include 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, GPS/ A-GPS, Micro-USB with OTG, Bluetooth v4.1, and 3.5mm audio jack. It also sports an infrared sensor. It measures 139.2��69.6.x8.6mm, and weighs 150 grams. Xiaomi has made this the USP of the Redmi series. Redmi 4 has a 4100mAh battery, which will easily last a day. However, there is no fast-charging and the phone takes a good three hours plus to get to 100 per cent.

Redmi 4 smartphone have others features also. These include App Lock (password and fingerprint locks for apps), Second Space (allowing multi-account profiles), and Dual Apps (allowing users to utilise two different WhatsApp accounts simultaneously). Special beta preview of Android Nougat-based MIUI will be available to users out-of-the-box. The infrared sensor on board allows the smartphone to be used as a universal remote control.

Moto G5 Specifications

Motorola Moto G5 smartphone comes with a 5.00-inch touchscreen display with a resolution of 1080x1920 pixels at a PPI of 441 pixels per inch. Motorola Moto G5 price in India starts from Rs. 10,999.

Hot August Nights 2017: Painless Performance/STREET RODDER Top 100

Ten vehicles out of 6,000. That’s what we’re looking for when we come to Hot August Nights in Reno. In addition to general event coverage, STREET RODDER comes to this huge event every year in search of ten cars or trucks to pick as award winners in the Painless Performance/STREET RODDER Top 100 program. While our fellow staffers were choosing Top 100 winners at the Tri-Five Nationals in Bowling Green, Kentucky, we were doing the same in Reno. Those guys had every variety of ’55-’57 Chevy to choose from, but for us at Hot August Nights, the range was a bit broader. We try for a wide variety—in eras, manufacturers, and styles and well as by mixing some modest-budget homebuilt “real world” rides with some top-rung show cars.

There is no shortage of opportunity for winning prizes at Hot August Nights. The Top 100 prize package (a cool jacket, magazine and web coverage, and a little glory) isn’t near the big money prizes given out elsewhere at Hot August Nights, but we think a Top 100 award has a high value—and the winners agree.

The 2017 Painless Performance/STREET RODDER Top 100 season is now finished. One hundred vehicles have been honored and one of them will soon be announced as the 2017 Street Rod of the Year. Maybe it will be one of these winners from Hot August Nights. Which one would you pick?

1937 Chevy Pickup | Dale & Rozanne Buck | Mesa, AZ

Like most trucks, this one started out as a workhorse. Dale bought it from his father 49 years ago and used it to haul stuff, for transportations, dates, errands, and family trips. Look at it now, packed with a supercharged 383 stroker engine with dual carbs, riding on a modified MII front suspension and Chassisworks rear, covered in tangerine and cinnamon paint, and hauling in show trophies. The body and bed feature more than 25 modifications, including the one-piece hood and shaved sheetmetal. Mickey Thompson provided the wheels and tires. The cab is updated with bucket seats, Mooneyes gauges, modern audio, AC, and yards of brown leather.

1959 Cadillac | Larry Hanson | Gig Harbor, WA

What could be cooler than cruising the main drag of Reno, Nevada, in a mile-long ’59 Cadillac? Larry bought the car 17 years ago, from the son of the first owner who had passed away. It had been parked for 28 years under a carport. The rusted c was torn down for a frame-off rebuild and most of the sheetmetal was replaced. Bob Salstrom helped with much of the heavy lifting. Now the candy purple 63 Series Coupe DeVille looks and ride better than it ever did, powered by a beautifully dressed 454 engine with a 4L60 transmission. The interior combines modern elements like digital gauges and a contemporary steering wheel with classic two-tone tuck ‘n’ roll Naugahyde.

1936 Ford Club Cabriolet | Michael Mongiello | Eagle, ID

When’s the last time you saw a ’36 Club Cabrio, especially one as nice as this one. Only 4,616 were produced, and Michael believes there are only around 200 in existence today. This one was purchased from the original owners in Minnesota, and was street rodded with help from Griffin Rod & Customs, Danny Ingram, and others. The custom Dayton wheels were painted Tacoma Cream to contrast the Cloud Mist Grey (a 1940 Ford color). The lighter color is also used for pinstriping and on the beautiful valve covers and air cleaner cover on the Chevy 383 stroker engine. A Glide bench is covered in deep brown leather, along with the rest of the elegant interior.

1940 Ford Coupe | Ken Machado | Reno, NV

The reddest street rod parked at the Atlantis Resort was this homebuilt ’40 Deluxe coupe, driven all the way from Ken’s house, two miles away. For Ken, the coupe was inspired by the Flathead ’40 Ford coupe he drove when he was in high school (and drag raced in B/Gas). This time, Ken built his car strictly for the street (and shows), and with features not available in his teenage years, including a 480hp LS3 engine backed by a 4L65E trans, and a TCI suspension. Sheetmetal changes include the big-block firewall and low-key rear wheel tubs. Ken’s coupe won the Best Street Rod prize at the Atlantis in addition to STREET RODDER’s pick for Top 100.

1952 Ford Victoria Convertible | Jay & Dianne Skow | Quincy, CA

Jay and Dianne’s Vicky is a true old-school custom survivor. Jay’s parents bought it at a used car lot 60 years ago. It became his first car when he was 15 and he cut off the top when he was 16. After Jay’s 45th high school reunion, Dianne encouraged him to redo the car, which he still owned but had ignored for 42 years. The body-off rebuild was done with old-school components, such as the 1957 Thunderbird 312 Y-block with triple 94s. Fatman and RideTech components are out-of-sight suspension upgrades. The shaved, nosed, and decked body has ’58 Lincoln headlights, a ’55 Buick grille, and inverted ’56 Packard taillights. Now their grandchildren are wondering who will inherit it.

1965 Chevy Impala 2-Door Wagon | Richie Valles | Agua Dulce, CA

The concept behind the two-door wagon was to create something with the looks of a GM concept car, the style of a Sixties custom, and some lowrider flavor. He bought the car from a woman in her 80s in Hollywood. She and her girlfriends used to drive the car to Vegas to see Elvis perform at the Hilton back in the day. He redid the car at his shop, Unique Twist Auto Body in Burbank, converting the body to two doors, chopping the top, modified the front and rear, and added Buick Skylark wheels. The ’66 Impala seats were covered in suede. The 327 engine, in old time custom tradition, was left simple. Richie says he took a big chance painting it candy magenta, but people like it.

1933 Willys Roadster | Vaughn Veit | Buffalo, MN

Vaughn is something of a ’33 fan with a collection of every body style of ’33 Ford. This rare Willys is one of his non-Fords and probably the rarest. He told us there were only 71 Willys roadsters built that year, and less than a handful remain in the United States. The car was discovered in California and built from rusted parts at Roy Brizio Street Rods. The old time Ford Flathead has Navarro heads and intake, with a pair of Stromberg 97s on top. Underneath, the Art Morrison chassis modernizes the ride. The Sid Chavers interior blends traditional and contemporary. The painted wheels are one-offs built by Curtis Speed. 1956 Chevy Nomad | John & Sheila Emacio | Chattaroy, WA

Three days after winning a STREET RODDER Top 100 award, this sleek white ’56 Nomad took Fifth Place in the prestigious Hot August Night Cup contest. In 2011, John and Sheila won Top 100 with a different ’56 Nomad. That one was silver and black with an LS6. This one runs a Jack Gibbs 409 with Inglese sidedraft injection and a Gearstar 4L80E. The car was built at G# Rod and sits on an Art Morrison chassis. The wheels are from Billet Specialties. Billet aluminum side trim is from Atomic Machine. Dark red leather was used throughout the interior. John describes it as a “finessed hot rod,” and says the white paint highlights the cars build quality.

1954 Hudson Metropolitan Convertible | Ted Whipple | Reno, NV

There are Hudson Metropolitans. Built by Austin, Metros were badged as Hudsons in 1954 when Hudson merged with Nash. Ted bought his from the original owner’s widow. It was bending from the rust, but builders Ken Carford and Ricky Ruiz helped Ted resurrect the car. MG Midget suspension parts support the stock frame. The 2.3L Ford engine was donated by an ’85 Mustang II, with a C4 transmission behind it. JBM wheels measure 14 inches. Interior touches include the vinyl and tweed covered bench, Stewart Warner gauges, and a Moto-Lita steering wheel. In the four years he’s owned the car, Ted has driven it a lot, shown it a lot, and answered a bunch of questions.

1950 Chevy Fleetline | Mitch & Pam McDonald | Foresthill, CA

In addition to selecting pro built rods for Top 100, we love finding “real world” owner-built street rods—the roots of this hobby—like this ’50 Fleetline. Mitch got into cars as a kid, standing next to his father and uncles. This was a two-owner car when he bought it from a friend five years ago, and began modifying it to his taste. Now it features a one-piece windshield, a filled hood, and a mild rake—with a dual-carbed 427 Chevy big-block for plenty of power, and a Heidt’s IFS frontend and four-bar rear. The beautiful interior includes SRT Challenger seats upholstered in black and tan leather. Five-spoke Americans measure 17- and 20-inches and wear Pirelli rubber.
