Understanding Mooncool’s Cadence Sensor and Pedal Assist

Every Mooncool E-trike provides three options for using its exceptional power. The first option is to simply pedal the e-trike, using entirely your own muscle power. This is not a fun option, although it can be very nice to have if your ride is too long and your battery runs out of power. However, e-trikes are heavy, and most riders rarely want to pedal with no assistance from the motor.

The second option is to use the high-quality Mooncool throttle provided on all their e-trike models. The throttle is conveniently located at the right-side handlebar grip. Just a slight turn of the throttle allows you to add as little or as much assistance as you may prefer.

Option number three is the high-tech Pedal Assist feature. The Pedal Assist uses information provided by the cadence sensor, and then gives the rider the needed level of assistance.

This is a fairly simple and very effective method of automatic power assistance to make your pedaling as easy as you desire. It consists of a disc that spins as you pedal. Evenly spaced around the disc are 24 magnets. When you begin to pedal, the disc begins to spin. As the disc spins, the attached magnets begin to move past the electronic sensor. With Mooncool’s generous number of magnets, it is only a split second before a magnet passes the cadence sensor. This immediately notifies the MAGiCYCLE controller that you are pedaling.

Now the controller knows that you are pedaling, but it does not know how fast you want to ride or how hard you want to pedal. That’s where the Pedal Assist System takes over, and does all the “heavy lifting” for you.

Pedal Assist System

The cadence sensor notifies the controller that you are pedaling, and the controller then sends power to help you pedal. How much power? That depends upon the Pedal Assist level you have selected on the e-trike’s display. The Pedal Assist System (PAS) on every Mooncool is preset to provide several levels of assistance.

The level of exercise while riding a Mooncool e-trike is completely in your control. If you want a lot of exercise, you can ride at Pedal Assist Level 0 and get no help at all from the motor. And it you want no exercise at all, you can ride with no pedaling at all, using only the throttle!

But what if you want just a little exercise, and without wearing yourself out? Mooncool makes it easy! You can choose any one of the provided levels of pedal assistance, and you can change levels with a quick push of one button.

In other words, whatever your level of fitness, you can customize the the riding effort to be perfect for you. This is true even if you have physical limitations, such as arthritic knees or leg pains. A properly selected PAS level often allows riders to get the exercise, sunshine, and fresh air they crave. Two-wheeled and three-wheeled e-cycles are similar in many ways. Yet, each is unique. The three-wheeled e-cycle is known as an electric trike, or e-trike. A motor with 55 Nm of torque gives your e-trike quicker starts and more powerful hill-climbing ability than a lesser motor with a lower torque output. To summarize, higher torque provides quicker takeoff, easier starts on an uphill incline, and greater ease of climbing hills.

How much power is enough? This varies with the individual rider. For example, a 300 pound rider needs more power than a 150 pound rider. In general, riders who live in an area with hills are happier with a 500 watt motor than a less expensive 350 watt motor. The same preference applies to riders who weigh in excess of 175 pounds, or who carry heavy gear when riding.

Power Comparison

At first glance, you might think these two trikes have equal power. If you look more closely, the Mooncool has the advantage over the Eunorau. Like the Mooncool, the Eunorau has a 500 watt hub motor. Unfortunately, it is mounted on the front wheel. In terms of traction, especially on hills or in gravel, that’s a definite disadvantage.

The Eunorau also has a 48 volt battery, but it only yields 12.5 amp hours…compared to Mooncool’s 15 amp hours.

Battery Range

How Much is Your Brain Worth?

You may think it looks a bit dorky, it may leave you with “helmet hair” and it may be too warm in hot weather…but wear it! My helmet has saved my noggin from injury more than once…but once is enough. Take a look at these statistics provided by New York City:

Almost 75% of fatal bicycle crashes (74%) involved a head injury.

Nearly all bicyclists who died (97%) were not wearing a helmet.

Serious injuries were rare among riders wearing a helmet (13%), but even more rare among bicyclists killed (3%).

Bicycle riders produce about twice as many head injuries as any other sport — including football! Please don’t risk it — just wear a helmet…especially if you ride an e-bike or e-trike. I selected the Livall MT1 Neo, and it’s a keeper. The speakers deliver sound quality that is about 50% better than Sena, and visibility is decent. Unfortunately, I can’t find a helmet that gives everything I want — great lighting, great communication, and decent sound quality. For example, communication is better with Sena, but it has no lighting and poor speakers. Here’s what I get with Livall:

All things considered, the Livall seems to be a good choice, and I have no plans to make a change. To make it even better, I will be adding a helmet light visible from the front. Of course, most of these features are not necessary, and not cheap, but they do contribute to the enjoyment of riding my Mooncool. But the main thing is…

All-Terrain Fat Tire E-bikes

The phrase “All-Terrain Electric Bike” refers to a bike equipped with knobby fat tires, front suspension, and at least one wheel is motorized. Some models have both wheels motorized, and all models have at least a 350 watt electric motor and a large battery to provide power.

They are great fun, but large and heavy, requiring decent physical condition and preferably a height of at least 5′9″ -- although some shorter riders have learned to handle these larger bikes. The all terrain fat tire e-bikes are versatile machines, and can take the rider over a variety of terrains, including off-road adventures. Most are equally at home on city streets and in suburban neighborhoods.

The e-bikes with 2-wheel power (dual motors) are almost unstoppable, with tremendous torque. Unfortunately, they are also expensive. I do know of one (and only one) very good all-terrain e-bike that is available for just under $1400 with FREE shipping. This is the best deal in a dual-motor all-terrain fat tire e-bike that I have personally ever seen.
