My Rocket | Cole Caufield
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
summary: after Cole gets jealous the last thing you expected was that you’d be in bed with him that night.
request: yes/no
warnings: swearing, mentioning of a sexual relationship
word count: 1.40k
authors note: hello, I am alive and well! Not sure that I like this but I am a bitch for soft Cole. Been writing this over the last few days so let’s all act like we like this, okay? Thanks 🫶
Tumblr media
You didn’t know how you two landed up in the living room like this.
The Ducks had been in town playing against the HABS and whilst you had been catching up with Trevor after the game he had Jamie join the conversation.
Jamie was polite and friendly and just seemed to send you a warm smile as he took in the sight of you in your boyfriends jersey.
Cole on the other hand watched the interaction between you two go down and he couldn’t help but feel his face form a scowl.
Now everything would have been fine if the HABS player just told you there how he felt, but instead Cole decided to be short with you the whole ride home “what the hell is your problem!” You groaned letting the front door to your apartment shut behind you.
Every single opportunity he had gotten the hockey player either ignored you or sent a negative remark your way “Cole!” You added as he continued to ignore you throwing his bag onto the floor.
Thankfully he seemed to agree that now was the time for him to start talking “why don’t you go back to that little buddy of yours?” You used to live in California and that was where you met Jamie for the first time but you never thought that Trevor would tell Cole about your past with him “he seemed really fucking interested in getting his girl back.” Cole crossed his arms as he sent you a glare.
A scoff left your lips “that was over a year ago.” His accusation struck your heart as you hadn’t even taken your heels off as you frowned.
The hockey player made his way over to you “you think he knows that?” He spat pressing his finger into your chest “you think he cares that you’re with someone else?” You swore you could see the anger in his eyes.
This wasn’t a topic that you two were new to though, last year the new team photographer was getting close to Cole and you simply wanted her to know that he had a girlfriend after she invited him out for drinks just the two of them “Cole I wouldn’t accept another guys move on me because I love you!” You blurted out like it shouldn’t have been as obvious as it was.
You frowned as he shook his head “baby you don’t understand that every guy looks at you w-” it was no secret that in Cole’s eyes you were an Angel sent straight from heaven “but I’m all yours so why does that matter?” Tears were now rolling down your cheeks as your anger had been replaced by sadness.
The thought of Cole not trusting you overwhelmed your sense “look if you can’t understand that then maybe you should sleep in the guest room tonight.” In the year that you two had been dating not once had you slept under the same room but not in the same bed.
All he could do was nod as you pushed past him letting your bedroom door slam shut behind you.
For two hours you two remained apart, Cole still to angry to see the fault in his ways and you too hurt to face him “just let me talk to him?” Trevor wavered as you had been on the phone with him since you got out of the shower.
The New York native met you during your first year at UCal and he quickly brought you into his friend group. That was where you met Jamie and started the four month long period of you two sleeping together. The summer of your sophomore year you met Cole and as one thing led to another and by your senior year you had transferred to a university in Montreal as you now lived with your boyfriend.
You shook your head running your fingers through your hair “I want him to come on his own terms.” You mumbled running your tongue over you lips as you could hear Cole in the shower “I don’t wanna play devils advocate but he loves you.” Trevors words made your eyes go wide.
He could sense your reaction and it made him smile ”Cole literally can’t shut up about you.” A smile formed on your face as you seemed to forget about the fact that you were mad at him “so he might seem mad but he is just scared of losing you-” you were quick to cut him off “losing me?” The idea of him being scared of losing you actually made you laugh as it was so ludicrous to even contemplate.
Trevor laughed at the way your cheeks turned pink “now I am quoting him but he thinks you’re a rocket.” Your stubborn manner was now wavering as you sighed “maybe I should talk to him?” You sighed watching Trevor hang up before you could continue talking.
Cole had been sat on the bed in the guest room as he stared at the mirror, his features had softened as his hands ran through his hair “Cole?” You mumbled leaning against the wall as you locked eyes with him.
As much as you didn’t want to admit it Cole looked hot in that moment with his towel hanging around hid waist and water dripping down his chest “hey baby.” The hockey player knew that the sight of you in nothing more than his jersey as even though you were taller than him the jersey still looked massive on you, it was something he was never going to get used to.
His hand raised to motion you over to him as you stayed half hidden with your hands fiddling with the ends of the jersey “I wanna see you.” He explained smiling as you listened.
Your walk to him seemed weary as you let your hand lock with his, silently telling Cole that he could bring you onto his lap. The hockey player let his hands run up your legs as you straddled his waist “hi” you stared down at his chest still not wanting to truly face him just yet.
Cole shook his head bringing his hands to cup your cheeks “want you to look at me baby.” Cole’s voice was soft as he titled your head up to face his “there is my pretty girl.” The hockey player cooed as he sent you a smile.
When you remained silent Cole took the moment to stare at your features “I am sorry that I was a dick,” his confession took you by surprise because out of all of the arguments that you two had this was the third time that he apologized first. His fingers drew soft circles on your skin “don’t blame Jamie for wanting you cause you’re one of a kind my love.” Cole hadn’t noticed the smile that had formed on your face as he continued “you could have slept with whoever you want before we got together.” “Cole-“ “I promise that for now on I won’t get mad at you but like you can’t blame me for wanting him to move away.” “Cole-” “I got scared that you were going to-” “Cole!”
He finally went quiet as he looked at you “what?” He scanned your face to see if he had missed something as you laughed “it’s going to take a lot more than a tall guy to ever make me think of leaving you.” You blurted out making him grin.
The hockey player felt his cheeks grow warm “how much we talking?” Cole teased wriggling his eyebrows making a giggle fall from your lips.
You pretended to think about it for a moment “you planning not loving me anymore?” Your question was meant to come off as rhetorical as you swore that you wouldn’t be getting an answer from him “you’re stuck with me till we die!” Cole yelled bringing both of your bodies down to the bed where he had flipped you over leaving him on top of you.
A squeal came from your mouth as you looked up at him “I’ll love you forever then.” Your words made him melt as his hands dropped to your sides.
Cole watched as his chain lay against your neck letting the cool metal act in contrast to your hot skin “here’s to putting up with me forever.” The boy smirked as he leaned down to kiss your lips.

Check out this great letter challenging the City of Kingston's plans for daytime evictions in Belle Park (from Mutual Aid Katarokwi-Kingston, March 19, 2024):
"I am a citizen of Kingston who lives on Montreal Street and volunteers five to seven days per week, for two or three hours per day, at the Integrated Care Hub with my colleague Brigit Smith.
In our role, at this grassroots level, we support the ICH shelter residents, substance users at the Consumption Treatment Centre, encampment residents at Belle Park and many unhoused in the community who have learned about the kindness, warmth and support we provide to the homeless.
As background, one of our business clients donated $10,000 to purchase a golf cart for the CTS and ICH staff to provide swift responses to overdoses, ultimately saving lives. We set up a prepaid account at BnB Pharmacy to support fulfillment of prescriptions, which we top up on a monthly basis. We raised over $12,000 this past winter to provide tents, air mattresses, sleeping bags, pillows, hygiene products, winter coats, boots, hats, gloves, running shoes, back packs, and warm clothing. We have built relationships with businesses in the community who support our efforts to take care of our homeless. We often purchase and donate coffee, donuts and
muffins so our unhoused feel, in some small way, that we care about their well-being. We process all incoming donations. We take care of everyone with respect and dignity and we are honoured to serve them. They are warm, friendly, appreciative, and respectful in all interactions. We do not deny the reality of challenges, as we see them every day, however one would think the threat to life would include concern for fires and freezing to death. We do not feel your decision is taking all complex matters into account. We feel uniquely qualified share our perspective.
The announcement of the City of Kingston to prohibit day use and evict our encampment homes on a daily basis, effective April 2, 2024, simply must not go forward.
We are in the midst of a national housing, economic, substance use and drug poisoning crisis. This is our reality. It is not going away. Delegations have approached council to talk about substance use in our schools at the elementary and secondary levels. Poverty and homelessness are growing. This is evident in the statistics authored by the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation. These may be the most complex times we will face in our lifetime and as citizens we can not condone the short sited and thoughtless approach of daily prohibition and daily eviction of homes. Asking our vulnerable residents who are often medically ill with complex mental illness, and or substance use and many fragile elderly, to pack up their homes and belongings daily, is inhumane. We must have more scope than knowing we will be complicit in the death of our vulnerable citizens, if we push them further into the woods and isolation, as Justine McIsaac stated at your council meeting in January 2023.
Moreover, the Office of the Federal Housing Advocate, authored by the Canadian Human Rights Commission (Feb 2024) clearly indicates the need for the City of Kingston to comply. It is a human right to receive adequate housing and yet you are proposing we dismantle the only home they have on a daily basis, destroying the little dignity they have. These are their homes, and it is incumbent upon us to improve their homes, not dismantle them. Our citizens in Belle Park are already a community in crisis, a traumatized and disadvantaged population. We have a group of seniors who depend on us to listen to their stories and memories and be present for their needs. Many, are quite sick and dropped off from the hospital in various states where continued active care is required. We also provide walkers, canes and wheelchairs. It is our norm. How can we respect and support the decision of the city when you do not seem to understand the complex matters of these very important citizens. We need to collaborate to find common ground.
Can you imagine what will happen to our emergency departments when we can no longer administer naloxone in Belle Park. An already overburdened HDH and KGH will now be providing overdose support because residents have moved further away from their support at the CTS and ICH. We serve hundreds of overdoses. These overdoses will land squarely at emergency along with the Paramedics and Police who must remain present until the emergency dept can serve them.
Our residents will find places to live in their tents further away from the ICH. Tent encampments will not cease to exist, with your dismantling strategy. Recently, you took the tent of a resident, and this particular resident continues to live at Belle Park under a tarp. You accomplished nothing but putting this resident further into crisis. This is their community, it is their home, their tents are their homes. Let that sink in, tents are the best we have provided them. This eviction will push them further into crisis, despair and desperation and as Justine stated, resulting in death.
It is our understanding, a resolution from Council is required to move forward with your April 2 directive and we did not find this resolution. Can you please advise us as to how this decision was made as we understand this directive to be illegitimate
Please let us work with our community, fire department, police and bylaw to educate and support our residents. Our outdoor engagement team has worked very hard to collaborate with citizens, police and fire and we believe with a dedicated team we can build understanding and find common ground. We are inviting the community to volunteer with us. Give us a chance to build relationships. Please reconsider your decision and work with us to support our community while we build a made in Kingston strategy together. On a strategic level, we have a made in Kingston plan to collaborate with private sector and all levels of government to lift Kingston as the innovative and dynamic city it is. Please reconsider and work with us toward a sustainable solution.
Sincerely,
Pamela Gray and Brigit Smith"

DO PEOPLE OF VERY ADVANCED AGE HAVE THE RIGHT TO BE RUDE?
Grumpy ‘Old’ People: Is Being of VAA (Very Advanced Age) an Excuse for Rudeness?
This month I read and chatted with people about age and behavior. Specifically, people of VAA (very advanced age) who conduct themselves with a noteworthy level of rudeness, selfishness, and a lack of consideration for others. My inquiry was triggered by someone of VAA who is a member of a group I’m involved with that includes at least one millennial (who might be a zoomer I’m not sure), at least one gen X, numerous baby boomers, and several war babies.  A collection of individuals each of whom come to these monthly meetings with their own communication style but all of whom conduct themselves in the way one would expect from most Canadians. That is to say, they are considerate and polite. Except for one war baby, who is sharp as a knife, accomplished and ambitious, and brings to the group anecdotes of a varied and interesting life story. However, this person also eschews the notion of social interaction as a dynamic and equitable exchange of stories and ideas. In other words, this person hogs the floor. And hogs it while holding a proverbial rod which is snapped at anyone that attempts a polite intervention.
I would guess that we are all familiar with someone who would fit my description of this person of VAA. There is nothing extraordinary about a person of VAA behaving rudely. But there is also nothing extraordinary about someone of any other age behaving rudely. Think of the co-worker who constantly interrupts you, the person sitting behind you at the theatre or concert who is talking ‘at the top of their lungs’ or, my personal favourite, the camper in the next site over letting their music blare through the treetops, ruining, I say absolutely ruining! my plans to enjoy the sound of the screaming children the next site over. (At least the children will be going to bed, hehehe) In all these cases, most of us would find a way to speak up. And usually, we would do it politely, or discreetly, being the polite and considerate people we are.
Forgive me if I sound overly righteous about politeness (couldn’t resist that little rhyme). I do know I can be that way at times. But I also know that I can understand and accept rude behavior, in myself and in others, because we all must face our own trials of fear, pain, and loss and these experiences can and do cause us to lose our sensitivity to others while we go through such fires. This is true at any age in life. When I am faced with rudeness from a stranger I say to myself ‘they might have just lost a loved one or their pet, or they might be in pain’. When I am faced with chronic rudeness I do not understand, I simply avoid the person. But what should one do when the person cannot be avoided?
And so I ask: Aside from situations of acute distress or dementia, why do we seem to tolerate rude behavior more from people of VAA than from others? I realize there may be a tradition of ‘respecting our elders’ that prevents us from addressing such rudeness, but does respecting our elders equate to tolerating  habitually bad behavior?
Naturally I googled this question. Here is the inquiry I made:
Why do some people become rude and inconsiderate when they get older?
And here are the subject lines of the first 6 returns of the search:
From Griswold Home Care:
Behavioral Changes in Old Age: Why Do Some Old People Get Mean?
From Quora:
Why are some old people so rude and entitled?
From Reddit:
Why are old people so f****** rude? : r/NoStupidQuestions
From Eastern Daily Press (UK):
Opinion: Why getting older is no excuse for sheer rudeness
From Science Daily:
Old People Aren't Rude, Just Uninhibited: New Research
From the Montreal Gazette:
Opinion: Rude millennials? Feh. How about rude seniors?
Clearly, this is a subject of popular interest but not one that is driving much in the way of cutting edge medical inquiry, as the results of my search reveal. (The Science Daily article discusses Australian research from 2005 related to older people being more likely to ask others about their medical conditions: think VAA person beside you in a waiting room asking you if you are also there to get your ear wax removed. Personally, rather than rude, I find this funny.)
Within the first two pages of search results, I found two articles, one from a seniors home, and another from a business called Home Care Assistance which both suggested that a person of VAA who is behaving rudely may have pain, loneliness, fear, or dementia. Or, they are simply behaving the way they always have, but perhaps worse because they have pain, loneliness, or fear. Having a parent in a nursing home, I can certainly understand this.
Nowhere in my search results did I find an article from a medical perspective that can explain habitual rudeness in healthy people of VAA. Therefore I went directly to my favourite source of medical information, Mayo Clinic. On their website I searched, ‘personality changes in seniors’. The Mayo Clinic pointed to delirium or dementia as the reason for personality changes in seniors (that would lead to, for example, rude and inconsiderate behavior).
From this admittedly unscientific review of the literature, I have concluded that, while it is a given that anyone suffering from dementia or delirium has no control over their behavior and deserve our patience and empathy, it is not a given that when one enters the realm of VAA, they are prone to uncontrollable changes in their personality that turn them into inconsiderate rod-wielding rascals. It then follows that there is a high probability that the 40 something co-worker who constantly interrupts others and hogs the floor will become one of those rude and inconsiderate persons of VAA that constantly interrupts others and hogs the floor.
Therefore I cannot help but conclude that the person of VAA I have come to know has, well, always been this way. Still, I continue to ask myself, am I being intolerant? Am I lacking in empathy? This person may in fact be dealing with some personal difficulties, of course. Being a very real possibility, I will continue resisting the urge to grab that rod and snap it over my proverbial knee!
Perhaps I am impatient with the patience afforded to the person in my group because I have never subscribed to the idea that people of VAA should be perceived or treated differently from others. When I hear someone speaking to a sound and healthy person of VAA with the same tone used to speak to babies, I cringe. I have seen how the person interprets this type of speech. In their eyes I see them saying, your way of speaking to me is offensive, but life is short, I can’t be bothered to straighten you out you blockhead.
But I have to tell you, I am afraid. Does this freedom to be rude mean that, lurking around (and perhaps within us??), are people who have been restraining their rudeness due to social disapproval, but, once in VAA territory, will let their inner enfant terrible off the leash for the simple reason that they know they will be allowed to get away with it? Inside of me is there an impudent punk of VAA rubbing her hands in anticipation? I am a long ways from VAA territory but as we all know, time flies.
With so many Canadians heading toward very senior years – let’s say 85 plus and still that number would probably offend some – are we facing a possible tsunami of grumps in the grocery line checkout? Will we need our grocery store managers to reserve certain checkouts for ‘grumps of VAA only’? To all cashiers: if this happens, demand higher pay for working that checkout!
May your days ahead be filled with those of sunny dispositions. Thanks for reading.

Expanding breach: Blue Cross customers being warned about Sobeys hack
The number of warning letters associated with the cyberattack on Sobeys last fall continues to grow, and now includes one of the biggest health insurance companies in Canada.
CTV News has confirmed a new round has gone out to customers of Medavie Blue Cross, which is based out of Moncton, N.B.
In a late afternoon statement to CTV News, the company said it all goes back to the original breach.
"Managed Health Care Services Inc. (MHCSI), a subsidiary of Sobeys, notified us that they would be sending a communication to some of our members advising that an unauthorized third-party gained access to certain servers containing information relating to MHCSI customers on Nov. 1, 2022," said Brittany Mitchelmore, Medavie senior communications advisor, in the statement.
"MHCSI is a partner in our Preferred Pharmacy Network, which is a benefit provided to some of our clients. Based on what we know today, we have no indication that any member information was accessed. Our company wants to assure our clients that we have a number of security procedures in place to protect their information from unauthorized access. Any questions related to this should be directed to MHCSI," the statement concluded.
Dartmouth resident Bill Zebedee has now received three copies of the same letter in the mail, but the lack of information is frustrating, he says.
"It's just not clear from the letter who was involved in this," said Zebedee, noting that his employer has recently changed health plans.
"We were with Great West. We're with Blue Cross now," he said.
MHCSI is a company that provides group benefit plans and works with pharmacies, including Sobeys and Lawtons.
The empire waited until the latter-half of February to publically acknowledge a major data breach last fall.
CTV News inquired about the expanded round of letters Wednesday and received a statement similar to previous information.
"As we have previously stated, we had a cybersecurity event in November. With the help of external experts, we have investigated how an unauthorized third party gained access to some of our servers and systems. The process to identify what data was impacted has been extremely complex, and we’ve now reached a point where we can notify those who were potentially impacted," the unsigned statement read.
"We have seen no evidence that personal data was accessed or removed from our servers; however, out of an abundance of caution, we have sent notifications to those who could have been potentially impacted and in compliance with our regulatory obligations. IT security is and has always been a priority for us. Trust and transparency matter deeply to us and we regret that this event occurred."
"Cybercrime is really, really difficult to solve right now," said cybersecurity expert Terry Cutler from his office in Montreal.
Known as the Ethical Hacker, he says even basic contact information can be a gold mine for cyber-criminals.
"They have access to home address, phone number, email. Now, they can send all these types of scams to them. Phishing emails, social engineering attacks. This is where you might get a call saying, 'This is Amazon. We've got a charge on your card. Press one to speak to somebody.' And somebody gets into your computer and tries to defraud you," said Cutler.
While some of the letters have offered a free subscription to a credit monitoring service, Zebedee says he's been told he's not eligible, but he believes the company should offer it to everyone impacted.
"It's going to cost them a boat load, but, the response I'm hearing from the public, the public embarrassment for the company is costing them a lot more than what the monitoring would cost them," he said.

Public health, as well as health and workplace safety investigators, don't know exactly how all 226 residents and some 148 employees of a private seniors' home in the Town of Mount Royal became infected with COVID-19 — a catastrophic outbreak that has killed at least 70 residents.
Quebec Public Health Director Dr. Horacio Arruda said Thursday that the CHSLD Vigi Mont-Royal appears not to have been managed with the level of infection prevention controls in place at hospitals.
With too few employees on duty, the seniors' home may not have been kept as clean as it should have been, or people may even have been dining together, contributing to the spread of the novel coronavirus, he said.

Local Competition
Before starting my research on my local competition, I was aware of many of them already. I just needed to research a bit more and get details.
I am starting a home care service company for helping seniors in their home. There is a great demand , as there is a rise of the aging population . I pretty much offer the same services that my competition have to offer seniors living at home.
Competition # 1
This is a large home care agency that has been in business since 1966. They have 100 locations and service 350,000 clients across Canada. They have been the recipient of Canada’s best mange companies since 2006 . They provide customized care plans and solutions that allow clients to remain in the comfort of their home. Other services that they have to offer clients are patient assistance programs, pharmacy network, infusion/injections services and clinical trails. They determine the rate of service based on the type of the care that is required.
Strengths are they ave been in service for a long time and they cover all across Canada. They have good reviews from clients and family members.
Weakness are mix reviews from previous employees.
Competition # 2
This business been around for two years and is local covering  the same area as me.  They provide services not only in the home but will go to nursing homes, assist living, hospitals and rehab centers.  They also provide customized care plans and focus to allow seniors to enjoy life to it fullest potential while living at home. They also help clients with goverment programs so they can get a discount. Their rate of service also varies depending on the needs of the clients.  For marketing they get referrals and use online  networking such a google, facebook ,indeed). You can find a lot of information about this company on facebook and website. They had very good reviews from clients and family members
Strength is that the owner is very friendly and willing to help . I contact the owner  personally to get some more information on the business, he had to take a call but he was willing to set up a time to talk over the phone or I could email him some questions and he would do his best to answer them. He respond my email quickly.
I have to say I have not been able to find any weakness, they are pretty new to the industry.
Competition # 3
This competition is a non-profit organization established in 2007. They focus on keeping clients stimulated ,happy and participating  in activities that are meaningful to them. They don’t provide personal care, but focus on getting clients out the the house doing things which is just important . They offer all the information you need to know on their website. They do have a blog.
Strengths are they hire experience and certified works and good testimonial from clients and family .
Weakness is that you have to have a minimum of  four hours per visit and just provide service mainly to downtown Montreal.
Now I  have to find a way to make myself stand out and more unique then my competition.

drag meeting au part 20
“You know, I’m glad you came over,” Étienne told her after a while. Kate shifted slightly to look up at him and couldn’t help but smile, her heart soaring.
“I’m glad you invited me and I agreed to come.” She was – really. Even though she had her reservations about her – other issue, this had been exactly what she needed and Étienne was good company. He was – different from other men “she’d” dated, but she sometimes feared that he would turn out to be nasty once he found out about her secret. She liked to believe that she had a good read on him and that Étienne would remain his kind self, but – she was also afraid. “This was exactly what I needed,” She added and further relaxed into Étienne’s warm embrace.
 “How’s work been?”
She sighed and let him play with her hair for a moment before answering. “Busy, but better. We finally hired someone to take up the position after one of our senior members left. They’re slowly getting the gist of the job, so that’s a start. At least we’re not short-staffed anymore. If anything, it makes my life and job a little easier and I can actually take a lunch break and not worry we’re going to fall even more behind.” It had been a really terrible time. Her senior manager had left at the worst possible time, but – it had been planned ages in advance. It just happened to coincide with many contracts coming to their ends and projects that needed to be wrapped up and delivered. Between that, her every day stuff, her sister’s visit, and this lie she was slowly digging herself a grave with, it had been a really terrible past few weeks that had taken a beating out of her.
“Here’s hoping this person works out then; I was starting to worry about you – you really sounded out of it.”
Of course, she did; she was thinking of ending the best goddamned relationship she had ever been in since it was built upon her own lie, while being over worked and probably headed for a minor burnout and nervous breakdown. Of course, she would sound out of it. Still, it was – touching that Étienne worried – that he had reached out.
“Me too. Things should quiet down now and if anything, the holidays are approaching, so at least I’ll get a proper break then.”
Étienne fell quiet for a moment and when Kate looked up to see what was the matter, she found her boyfriend deep in thought.
“About the holidays,” He started, almost a little shy, and it was frankly adorable, even if she didn’t know where he was going with this, “I was wondering – well, did you have any plans? I mean – I’m not saying we need to spend them together! It’s – we haven’t been dating long, but, I thought – maybe we could do something? Together? Maybe? Or not – it’s fine if you don’t want to!”
Honestly, Kate thought Étienne was absolutely adorable when he blabbered on and was a little nervous about things like these. When he wanted to do something grand, but wasn’t sure if it was too much too soon. Kate melted on the inside, every time, without fault. She levelled with her boyfriend and took his face between her hands. She placed a soft kiss to his lips and couldn’t help but grin when it effectively got him to quiet down.
“I would have loved to, but unfortunately, I won’t be in town. I’m going back home for the holidays and I’ll be leaving on the twentieth.” All of that was true, actually. Her last day of work was the nineteenth and the following day she was flying back home, like she did every year.
“Oh,” Étienne said and she could tell that he was trying not to seem too disappointed. “That’s alright – there’s always before – or after, but – where’s home? I thought for sure you were a local!”
She laughed at that remark, “Please, you don’t need to flatter me.”
“I’m serious. I would have never thought you were from elsewhere.”
“You’re probably one of the firsts; where do you think I’m from, now that you know?”
Étienne thought about it for a moment and Kate was intrigued to hear his answers. “You speak French really well, so that eliminates many places; east or west?”
 “West.”
 “Winnipeg? St-Bonniface?”
“Not quite,” She laughed. It was a good guess – an obvious guess to make, considering she had told him she was from the west.
“I refuse to say you’re from Ontario and also I don’t consider that being west, but, in case, are you from Ontario?”
“Heaven’s no. Not, Ontario.” Étienne almost seemed relieved by that and Kate wondered why.
“Prairies? I know there are Franco communities everywhere but, you don’t scream west coast and – I’ve never been to Alberta or Saskatchewan, so it’s a tossup on one of those.”
“Alberta – I’m from Edmonton,” She finally told him, amused by his deductions.
“Oh! I almost got to go a few years ago – for a mural project, but it got cancelled. I’d love to visit one day, though. Now I have an even better reason to go. Think you could show me around?”
Kate was quite frankly surprised that Étienne knew that Edmonton existed and that his first comment wasn’t related to oil or the mall. She nodded and Étienne seemed ever so pleased at the idea of having his own private guide to show him around. She rather hated the fact that her mind conjured images of summer plans where she and Étienne got to walk around the city hand in hand as she showed him around, but she couldn’t deny that the idea was ever so alluring.
“All right, so how did you end up here then?”
“I moved here about eight years ago. The company I was working with expanded into Montreal and they needed someone to get things started and lead the branch. They asked me if I wanted to and I said yes.” That was a watered down version of the real story, but at least it wasn’t a lie. Her boss had indeed offered her the opportunity to start the Montreal team and to take care of the branch. It had meant a bigger salary, a new adventure and new challenges. She’d accepted, wanting a change of pace and had thought she’d stick it out for a few years and then go back home. Instead, she’d absolutely loved it here and liked the work and her new life, even if she still missed home. It was why she always went back to visit when she could.
“Wow, that’s super impressive! So you’re like the big shot boss?”
“Something like that.” She said with a smile.
“Have I ever said that I think you’re absolutely badass?”
Kate’s cheeks burned bright red and Étienne laughed at her reaction.
“You truly are! You got offered a new job miles away from home and now you’re at the head of the branch and – you’re really cool, is all I’m saying. I think you’re really cool and a total badass and I can’t believe I’m dating you.” He reiterated and Kate – Kate wanted to bury her head in the sand or find the highest mountain and scream. Étienne was – too much, in all the good and wonderful ways and how the hell had she managed to land such a guy when she was running the worst of lies was utterly beyond her.
“Oh, come here, you fool and quit saying such nonsense.” She pulled Étienne to her and kissed him deeply, before Étienne’s mouth got the best of him and he said anymore of these too kind things that would leave her in a puddle by his couch.
Étienne did not protest the kiss and wrapped his arms around her waist to hold her even closer. She let him guide, after a while, enjoying far too much the sensation of his soft lips against her own, the brush of his tongue against hers, and how his hands clutched her sides one moment, before caressing them as though she was something to be venerated.
She gasped when she felt his hand snake under her shirt and Étienne broke away for a moment to check in and make sure everything was all right with her. She nodded, wrapped a leg around his, and thrilled at the feeling of Étienne’s palm on her stomach. His hand was sure as his thumb slightly dug into her flesh and she loved the contrast of his calloused fingers against her soft skin.
Kate wrapped her arms tight around Étienne’s neck and moaned when Étienne pressed hot kisses from her lips down to her neck. She would have let him go on with whatever it was he was doing, but her lips felt lonely without his and so instead, she went looking for another languid kiss that Étienne was more than happy to give her.

Grandparent scams are on the rise. Here's how you can protect yourself
Like hundreds of Canadian seniors this year, Ilene Lawson received a terrifying phone call she won’t soon forget.
She was told her granddaughter had been in a car accident and a loaded gun was found in the trunk. She was now in police custody.
“I was freaking out. I was totally freaking out,” said Lawson at her home in Mississauga, Ont. “I was shaking, which is not normally me. All I could think about is my granddaughter being a cell, locked up in there.”
The caller told Lawson her granddaughter would be released if she paid a $10,000 dollar cash bond. But she was told there was a gag order and she had to keep quiet.
It was only after she handed over the money, she realized it was all a lie.
She is now sharing her story in the hope that no one else will fall victim to the scam.
“Every night when I go to bed I relive it,” she said.
Police across the country are seeing a rise in criminals preying on fears of the elderly with what’s known as grandparent scams.
They say fraudsters are no longer just collecting by wire transfer.
“What we’re seeing locally is that there’s an in-person element. It’s not just online, and that’s concerning to me,” said Cpl. Laura Hirst of the Burnaby RCMP in B.C.
The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC) says from Jan. 1 to Aug. 31 in 2022, there were 1,352 reports of ‘emergency’ scams, resulting in more than $4.5 million in losses. That’s almost twice the losses in all of 2021.
That’s only the reported cases. Victims often stay silent.
“It’s not only financial consequences but also emotional consequences, where these victims usually are going to have a sense of fear, discouragement, shame that they have listened to the fraudsters,” said Lt. Lynne Labelle of the Montreal police department.
RCMP say seniors who get such a call should:
Hang up and not provide any information to the caller
Do not send money to the caller
Call your family members right away, especially the family member in question
Report this information to police.
All scams should also be reported to the CAFC, which can be reached online or by phone at 1-888-495-8501.
“Be mindful or be careful of what you post online. Scammers can use details shared on social media platforms,” said Jeff Horncastle of the CAFC. “A lot of times if you list your family members, names of your family members, fraudsters unfortunately can gather this information and use it as an extra tool to try and scam you.”

Languages of Saints - C.R (6/10)
Tumblr media
Summary: A deal isn’t supposed to involve feelings, right? (Reader/Carter Baizen).
Prompt: “Did you enjoy yourself last night?”
for at the now @imcarterbaizen ‘s 4k challenge.
Masterlist
Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4 | Part 5
Feedback is always appreciated.
Montreal.
You had only seen her once in your life, after you had fallen off the ice sheet of the sidewalk that cold winter break you had spent chasing after the mirage (across the US and into Canada) that Rocio had fallen in love with so deeply. Said woman graduated the semester before (Rocio was a “super senior”, though she denied it) and instead of staying in contact with your best friend --her own childhood friend-- Roci was driven to damn near madness trying to contact her, only to find that said woman was engaged and enjoying her freedom for the last time. Rocio pleaded for her love, it wasn’t any different from now.
You ran through the crowd and pushed your way along to see a very still and wet Rocio watching a beautiful, now divorced, woman walk away from her the 2nd time. You only caught a glimpse of her, gold and white dress with simple jewelry and hair pulled up high. There isn’t any emotion on her face as she disappears.
It’s Montreal all over again, as you grab Roci before she fall to the floor. Henry, her younger brother comes over quickly and drags the two of you inside of the family’s garden home, the people are muttering to themselves, watching like hawks but doing nothing more and you can’t help but feel bitter anger rise in you at how this will only push Roci back.
“Senna, I love you . Senna, I’m sorry ,” you hear the tall woman murmur to herself, as you almost let out a sob at how broken she sounds, just like back then with a broken hearted look on her face. Heidi shakes her head from the sidelines, unsure of what to do with her eldest child, as the four of you cross the large and highly decorated wooden doors -- your time Carter Baizen completely forgotten as you watch over and listen to Rocio over the rest of the weekend.
Rocio and Senna --flower and dew-- things that are supposed to be together, but never will be.
“Rich people can’t fall in love,” Rocio looks at you haunted, like she knows something you don’t, with those glossy green eyes of her, “It’s just a sick game of compromises and titles, who can be who first.”
And maybe you take those words too close to heart.
Carter spends the rest of his weekend and the first two days of work doing damage between his own connections with Rocio, but mostly because there are pictures all over social media of him dancing with a “mysterious woman”, though some people already know and others could figure it out if they try hard enough -- like Ellis had on Monday morning. Carter groans at the memory.
“So, is this gonna be your thing now?” Ellis sits back while looking at his phone, Carter knows that he is looking at a image of himself and her dancing in the garden party festivities. While, it wasn’t high school, word still gotta around just as quick, though he had been careless as well, “Going out with the help? Thought you would do better than that at least. Keep aiming big, no?”
“I’m not aiming for anything,” Carter grows defensive as he runs a hand through his hair in frustration, but Ellis gives him a look of disbelief, even the self-made man didn’t believe himself because Carter had woken up dreaming of her, of her soft laugh, of her endless loyalty to her best friend -- and even to him, from what he had heard her talking, even though he knew he didn’t deserve it. He couldn’t help but find something admirable in that.
Carter stays silent, as Ellis shakes his head.
“You have a soft heart for pretty things, Car,” Ellis states with a laugh as blue eyes keep staring at him, “But don’t let them break it again, especially the quiet ones.”
Carter shakes his head at the advice, before turning to look at his old friend with completely seriousness as his thoughts drift over how serious you were over the money that couldn’t be accounted for, that even he didn’t know where it was going anymore. Carter frowns as his blue eyes meet his friend’s and close associate.
“If we’re talking seriously right now, I have a few questions to ask you.”
He doesn’t want to remember the rest of the how the conversation went as he stares at the New York skyline in the afternoon sun, before taking a deep sigh. He hopes he isn’t doing what Ellis had brought up -- he couldn’t be falling in love again, that wasn’t the end game anymore. But, here he was worrying that you hadn’t come into work the past two day, hoping that everything was okay -- even if it was Rocio. Carter knew he could reach out to you at any moment, but no -- he wasn’t going to play that game anymore.
However, Carter Baizen is a weak man when he realizes he wants something, he keeps searching it out trying to catch a glimpse of it for a moment, trying to find a way to make it his. He had done all this once before, even lying about important matters of the heart in order to get the girl he wanted in the end, but there wasn’t anything to hold over your head -- I mean there was, but he didn’t want to take that route, of forcing you to be his for appearances sake. So, how was he supposed to go about it?
Then a letter came and a plan began to bubble in his head.
Your week had been just as hectic though for different reasons as you had stayed with Rocio until she had decided to take an extended rest in her stepfather’s Connecticut home for some time. She hadn’t said anything besides goodbye and had contacted you since, though you were always checking her instagram only to be welcomed with nothing but scenic shots and one or two quotes. You worried like any best friend would, but Rocio was a grown woman and thus you could only hope for the best. Thus, you spent the rest of the week playing catch up with your work and taking care of Monsieur after having him stay with your annoying next door neighbor.
“Another meeting with the boss,” Nick gives you a questionable stare, as he gets ready to leave, as you are carrying piles of folders and your laptop in front of the elevator as the clock strikes 6pm.
“Just a lot of things to look over,” you explain with shrug,”Especially with this gala he now added. It’s annoying--”
“But, you enjoy it,” he responds, only to laugh lowly at the look on your face, “Don’t be shy, I see it when you talk about the events. You should be proud, not everyone has the patience to deal with all these people.”
“Thanks,” is all you can say for the praise with a sincere smile as he leaves for an elevator heading to the bottom parking structure, but the thought almost made up with dealing with Mr. Baizen all the time. It wasn’t that you were over the hill over Nick’s praise or that Mr. Baizen annoyed you --though that wasn’t a complete lie sometimes-- but it was good to know that someone saw your actual dedication to everything that you did, especially over the sleepless nights and general loneliness that came with this type of work.
The ride up is quite since most people leave by 5:30, though you had always made it a habit to stay and work as much as you could in order to get the work done and off of your mind, though it had just lead to Harold and the former CEO to add more to your pile. Carter Baizen wasn’t exactly like that, but there was more research and outreach that come with event planning, that you had to quickly pick up and learn about. You spent most of the day calling and double checking, while most nights were spent with numbers, though it wasn’t as lonely as it was sitting in a dark office floor by yourself.
But, you would die before telling Carter Baizen that you somewhat enjoyed his company.
“Good evening,” you smile as politely as you can to the immaculately dressed man as he turns form looking at his laptop to greet you with a serious face, that you aren’t used to, as you sit down across from him like every Friday.
“Hey,” is all he lets out at the sight of you in a black skirt and blue button up, before remembering your best friend, “...how is Rocio doing?”
“As good as she can be, though I don’t blame her for leaving the city again,” you shrug, though feeling a slight appreciation towards the man for thinking about Rocio, even if they might have the best opinion of one another. It’s then that he decides to move towards a more personal topic.
“Have you seen---” he starts, curious as to if you even care about those few moments you shared a couple of days ago, the ones he couldn’t stop thinking about.
“Yes, Roci’s sister is very into telling me all the juicy Upper East side gossip when she can,” you explain as he has a vague memory of the much younger Violet, though his ears pick up over what you say in the end, “And as much as I appreciate your concern, this isn’t my first rodeo. I can take care of myself.”
You smile softer than he is used to and Carter swears that his heart stops for a moment. You go over the events for the upcoming month since there is a children’s center opening under the Baizen Co. name and other little events as there are events all over New York dealing with children and their needs when they aren’t in school -- a major center of philanthropy for the old CEO and his ( former , from what you have heard) wife. It is then that Carter brings up the gala and puts his plan into action.
“So, what do you think?” he asks, as you look over the the small envelope and letter addressed to him.
“This gala would be a great opportunity for the fundraising side of the corporation, but there is a mandatory couples clause to the gala,” you state, while looking at the letter and not noticing the huge shit eating grin on your boss’ face,  “Do you have anyone to be your plus one?”
“If I told you that I’m looking at her right now,” he leans a little closer, as his elbows find the upper part of his desk as he leans in a little more to annoy you.
“What?” you grumble, but that doesn’t stop Carter from moving forward with his plan, “ That’s very unprofessional, Mr. Baizen.”
Then, he goes in for the killing blow.
“Not up for this type of challenge,” he questions with a grin like a little kid as you frown at how he throws your words back at you, “Or I guess I could go with some super model actress, maybe even make a spectacle.”
You slamming your hands onto his desk catches him off guard, but he can’t help but love the angry look on your face at his comment and the idea of him potentially ruining everything you had worked on to make the company look presentable and keep going, regardless of how much was his doing. You take a deep breathe and Carter can’t help be think that he really likes this side of you. God, he must really be a masochist.
“I’ll be your plus one, Carter Baizen, ” you let out lowly, as Carter feels a spark of excitement and something else that he hasn’t felt in a very long time when you say his first name in that way, “But, you’re on a very thin rope during the whole event.”
“Completely understood,” he smiles as he leans back into his leather seat, as you shake your head before filling out the card and putting away with the reminder to mail it out before the next of next week. The meeting ends quickly after that, as Carter asks if you need a ride home once more.
You say no once more and disappear down the street, but as he drives back to his apartment Carter can’t help but feel like he won something tonight.
