Monteverdi 375/L High Speed Coupe – 1971

Peter Monteverdi had been Ferrari's Swiss importer, but a falling out between the two mercurial personalities watered a longstanding seed in Monteverdi's mind, to build his own sports coupé. Like many European manufacturers of the period, Monteverdi chose to build a hybrid. At the time, the word referred not to a petrol-electric automobile, but to a car that combined Italian design brio with a reliable American V-8 powertrain. Monteverdi's automobiles were designed by Frua, bodied by the coachbuilder Fissore, and powered by the same Chrysler 440 V-8 and TorqueFlite automatic gearbox used in “muscle cars” of the same era.

Monteverdi High Speed 375 L, 1968, by Frua. A one-off commissioned by German photographer, author and industrialist Gunter Sachs (also third husband of Brigitte Bardot). The main difference between this and the 10 other Carrozzeria Frua 375 models was the shape of the rear window, rear side windows and the 3 vents on the rear roof buttresses. It was shown alongside a Frua 375 S at the Geneva Motor Show. The 375 refers to the power output of the Chrysler-sourced 7.2 litre V8 engine.

Monteverdi High Speed 375 L, 1971, by Fissore. An amazing example of the Chrysler-engineed Swiss coupé at the London Concours. It is unclear who designed the 375L. Peter Monteverdi claimed to have designed the car, Fissore never denied it but is likely that Fissore refined the styling details based on Monteverdi's sketches. In any case it uses tail lights of the Alfa Romeo Giulia Berlina
