On the Tip of My Tongue
Shadowhunter Fan Fic - Hurt/Comfort Bingo Fill
This fic is a one-shot to fill a square on my Hurt/Comfort bingo card cas created by @sweetspicybingo
Prompt filled: it's not fair to recovery room
Fandom: Shadowhunters
Pairing: Jalec - Jace Wayland/Alec Lightwood
Rating: Mature (for violence)
“Jace!!! Nooo!!!” Alec dropped his bow and the arrow he was about to shoot as he watched Jace collapse to the ground, the warlock and his ravener demon were pulverized by Magnus’ magic but not before Jace had been first stung by the demon’s poisoned tail to his shoulder and been blasted by a sickly green nearly opaque pulse of demon powered magic from the warlock who’d been brainwashed to do Valentine’s bidding.
It was the latest of Valentine’s series of passive-aggressive and increasingly less subversive attacks on the New York Institute and the Clave by extension. Alec himself went down as his legs went out from under him with the agonizing pain that raced through him via his bond with Jace. It wasn’t fair that Jace was getting hurt all the time, he protected both Clary, the cup and by extension the entire Downworlder population with stubborn conviction which only left in harm's way time and time again.
He crawled the last few feet, so that he could cradle Jace’s head in his lap, wrap protective arms around him and whisper encouragement to stay awake, to not give in. The spark in Jace’s beautiful multi-colored eyes was dulling and he could sense Jace fading through the bond.
The blond shadowhunter held on to Alec’s arms that embraced him to then look up into those gorgeous hazel eyes and with barely any sound to it said: “I love you too.” before he passed out.
The beeping was annoying and incessant but somehow he knew he needed to not ignore it, as his mind and body came back online. Jace went through what felt like quicksand to try and claw his way up to a fully awake state. When he opened his eyes, everything was blurry at first, but came into focus slowly as he took in the darkened room he was in.
The beeping was a heart-rate monitor beside his bed; he recognized the room as one of the recovery rooms at the New York Institute. He racked his brain for how he had gotten here but came up blank. The last thing he remembered was a flash of green and searing pain in his left shoulder and Alec’s concerned hazel eyes above him and then nothing but blackness until now.
He looked down from his half seated position and saw the blood transfusion needle stuck in the back of his hand along with another in his arm to administer a bag of clear liquids. His shoulder was bandaged he could just see the dark gray material poke out from underneath the navy blue hospital gown he was wearing.
His hand that wasn’t doubling as a pin cushion, was loosely covered by Alec’s, who had fallen asleep, his head resting on the bed beside Jace’s hip. He looked beautiful and peaceful in sleep. Gently Jace pulled his hand out from under his and carded his fingers gently through the shock of unruly black hair, and could feel his parabatai push into the gentle touch. Jace wanted him so much more than he could ever admit out loud, especially after finding out that Alec felt the same way. The words had been at the tip of his tongue ever since that catastrophic memory demon experience a few weeks back. However, Jace also knew that Valak had taken that memory from Alec so who knew if he even still felt the love that he had so unwillingly disclosed in front of all of them as it had floated towards the memory demon.
Alec slowly opened his eyes, he was sleep-drunk and rather adorably rubbed his eyes before he looked up at Jace who regarded him with a gentle smile.
“Hey there, brother.”
“How are you feeling?”
“Like I’ve been blasted by errant magic and stung by a demon?” Jace tried to laugh but winced when the motion pulled the wound on his shoulder.
“Hey take it easy, funny guy. Do you remember what happened?”
“I remember the warlock aiming at me and that ravener demon appearing out of nowhere. I’ve never seen a warlock with a ravener familiar. It was a very strange thing to see. And then I saw you crouching over me, encouraging me to stay awake before I passed out.”
As Jace said this he recalled vividly and with utmost certainty that what he had said to Alec, seeing his parabatai’s face fall was all the proof he needed.
“Anything else you recall?”
“Yeah, only just now though; I love you Alec, been wanting to say it since the Valak incident but too afraid to. The curse, our bond. I was worried it would change everything but I love you in the way that I shouldn't but I can’t deny it.”
Alec kissed him then, a soft tender meeting of their lips, the touch between them was electric and it made their bond thrum with increased intensity and connectedness, as the link between solidified infinitely more and it couldn’t feel more right to either of them.

um.. can we get the continuation to the angelo and valak lore machonachos just posted?
:3Sooo~We left off here~With Angelo getting a call from Heaven itself. Before anything can be done about Valak, Angelo figures he’d better go and see what Heaven wants. He doesn’t need more trouble while he’s trying to save his husband, so he wants to take care of it. Plus, duty and all that. He’s a responsible guy. He’s not gonna shirk his duties and obligations. So, he goes on up to Heaven. He’s unsure of what’s in store for him. Did they find out about him and Valak? Are they going to punish him further? Is this the end for him? He’s cautious, finding himself surrounded by the archangels. Gabriel seems a little peeved, but when isn’t he? It’s Michael who speaks. He praises Angelo for his good work in defending when the demons rose up and began attacking humans. He saved countless human lives, and possibly halted a would-be demonic uprising.(Luckily, it seems as if Heaven is unaware as to why the demons attacked. Aka: they don’t know that the demons were trying to capture Angelo whilst Valak and Ahriman were fighting.)While Michael is giving Angelo high regards and praising him, Gabriel just keeps looking angrier and angrier. Finally, at the end of it, Michael offers Angelo something. He offers him his powers back. The full extent. And just to really sweeten the offer, Angelo is allowed to feel the power surging back into him.
He’s surrounded by a glowing light, his wings sprout feathers back to their full size, his hair falls over his shoulders, his eyes lose their glassy dead look and become a beautiful blue once again, and the seal on his neck fades to merely a thin scar. He’s allowed to gaze upon himself in a mirror, and honestly, in that moment, the offer is extremely tempting. He’s beautiful again. He’s powerful again. He can fly again. He’s told that his duties on Earth could be relinquished, and he could return to being a Dominion. Of course, he’d have to earn back everyone’s trust, and he’d still be monitored, but he can be his true self again. It’s the hesitation that sets Gabriel off. He’s already annoyed that everyone is being so merciful to someone he deems unworthy. He chides Angelo for not accepting this gracious offer immediately. Why is he hesitating? Why wouldn’t he jump at the chance to be a Dominion again and regain his respect amongst the other angels in Heaven? When Angelo flat out refuses, it confuses the other archangels. They question why he wouldn’t want this, and if he doesn’t accept, the opportunity won’t be given to him again. He’ll have to live out the rest of his existence on Earth doing the same work he’d been doing for the past 40+ years. He’d have no chance to return to his former glory. He doesn’t say much, only that he’s content with his life in the land of the living. He’s fine living the way he does, and that one good deed doesn’t forgive his past transgressions. Aaand, that he has his own reasons for wanting to stay. Michael strips his power away. Gabriel scoffs and mumbles to himself, wondering why Angelo would refuse such an offer, how he’s ungrateful, all that. Angelo asks if he can leave. And Michael says yes, and that Heaven only needs him to continue his work among the humans, but besides financial support, Heaven really won’t have anything to do with him anymore. As Angelo begins to leave, and Gabriel makes snide comments, Angelo then asks, “So… we are done here?”After receiving confirmation, that yes, they are done. Angelo turns and decks Gabriel right in the face, knocking him back and few feet. Gabriel of course, whines and complains, but Angelo simply leaves and goes back home to continue on with the plans of getting Valak back. –To get Valak back, he needs a way to coax Kocell back. He’s an angel, he can’t just waltz down into Hell. He’s very unsure of what he’s supposed to do to get in contact with her. But, the answer comes to him unexpectedly. As if by a stroke of luck, Angelo spots a demon wandering around in human form. The demon isn’t really bothering anyone, and just seems like they’re just kinda living amongst humans like Valak did. So, of course, Angelo stomps right over to them and begins harassing them, grabbing them by the shirt and getting up in their face, telling them that he needs to get in contact with someone. He needs the demon to send a message for him. He needs the demon to tell Kocell that he wants a rematch. He wants to face off with her again. He gives the demon a specific time and place he wants to meet, and tells them to relay the message. There’s a bit of threatening on Angelo’s part to made sure that the demon does as it’s told. After that, it’s just a waiting game. Angelo tells Nevaeh that the plan is in motion. He’s nervous. Scared even. He doesn’t want to hurt Valak. But, whatever Kocell had done to him… that wasn’t his Valak. That was some sort of beast. Angelo and the girls make their preparations. They’re ready by the time Kocell shows up again. She’s boastful and showy as always, and makes a big deal of making her entrance with Valak in tow, looking just as feral as before. They’re a good distance away from the incomplete salt circles, so Kocell won’t notice them. It’s risky, but Angelo needs to lure the two demons to the circles. He needs to get Valak to chase him down again. Turning on his heel and pushing off with a powerful flap of his wings, Angelo lunges forward and away from Valak, coaxing him to chase after him. He just has to use his own legs to try and outrun Valak until he gets him to the circle. He can’t risk riding Heaven’s Bounty and disrupting the salt circles. He has to do this himself. He also can’t be too far ahead of Valak, because he doesn’t want him to notice the salt circle ahead of time.(Also, if anything went bad, he didn’t want Heaven’s Bounty to get hurt, because she would most definitely try to protect him if Valak attacked)He’s running as fast as his legs will take him, glancing over his shoulder to make sure Valak is behind him. Meanwhile, Kocell is following them, eager to see how her little pet does. She wants to watch. Unfortunately for her, she’s paying so much attention to Valak and Angelo, that she doesn’t bother to look down to her feet and to notice that she’s walked right into a salt circle. She’s literally stepped right into their trap. Nevaeh quickly rushes out and completes the circle, trapping Kocell inside. It’s a very intricate circle, it needs to be complex to hold the power of a demon general. Nevaeh doesn’t want Amber Lee anywhere near Kocell. Plus, Amber Lee can’t see Kocell or Valak when they’re in their demon forms. Kocell was caught off guard. She hadn’t expected that Angelo would team up with humans of all things. Nevaeh immediately starts reading off Psalms that will banish Kocell back to the 9th circle of Hell. Amber Lee has poked her head out once she sees Nevaeh jumping into action, she doesn’t know if it’s time for her to act yet. Valak definitely noticed when Kocell got trapped. She’s definitely screeching and making a bunch of noise. Valak turns his attention to her, ready to save his mistress. However, Amber Lee happens to be right in his path. And, obviously, Valak would have no problem completely eviscerating her to get to Kocell. Amber Lee has no idea that she’s right in the way. She’s ready to close up the other circle, but doesn’t know when. She’s unaware of the demon ready to bulldoze her down. Angelo panics, seeing that Valak’s attention is off of him, and that Amber Lee is in danger. With no other choice, he materializes his whip. He cracks it towards Valak and snares his wrist, tugging him forward and dragging him down into the salt circle intended for him. He holds him there and gives Amber Lee the signal to close off the circle. The moment the circle is closed, Angelo releases Valak from the whip. The injury seems to be searing and smoking, the whip leaving a pretty nasty burn on Valak’s skin.
He’s, of course, snarling and nearly foaming at the mouth, looking on as Nevaeh finishes reading the passages and exorcises Kocell back to Hell. The ground opens up, and with a scream, Kocell is plummeted back to the very bottom of Hell, as if there was a weight around her ankle dragging her down. Needless to say… she’s pissed. Once the ground closes back up and Kocell is nowhere to be seen, attention turns to Valak.Angelo had hoped that exorcising Kocell would make Valak return to normal… but it’s not the case. He’s banging and pounding at the invisible barrier encasing him in the circle. He’s still the same. Still feral. Still wild. They restrain him with chains made of Holy Gold, while Nevaeh recites incantations to keep him settled while they get him back to Angelo’s apartment(luckily humans can’t see any of this going down). And once they get him to Angelo’s place, they clear a room to put him in, and restrain him with even more chains. They place a large salt circle around the room to keep him imprisoned. And a good spritzing of holy water doesn’t hurt either. Angelo can’t stay in contact with the Holy Gold for too long, and after having to drag Valak all the way back home, he can’t even really be with him. He has to keep him locked away in that room.(He had to physically touch the gold while locking Valak up, which is much worse than simply being in the presence of the Holy Gold. He can be in the presence of it alot longer than he can be touching it. And he’s already done too much touching for the day.)So. He just has to lock Valak in the room and then go to sit with the girls. Angelo’s mood is notably… down. He has his husband back, but at what cost?

This Is the Coda That Never Ends... Part 15
(Read on AO3) (Read from the start)
This is not at all how Magnus pictured the rest of his night going.
“Great, she wants them back! So, what now?” Simon asks, clapping his hands together in anticipation.
Standing beside him Magnus hears Alec mutter “I’m going to kill him,” under his breath while his hands clench at his sides.
Magnus wonders if Simon truly understands what he’s just done, even if he didn’t exactly dissuade the idea himself.
Magnus meets Clary’s gaze and sees the same girl who came to him to get her memories back just a little over a year ago, fierce and determined, and gives her a small nod. Honestly, he didn’t really expect any other answer from her once the offer was on the table.
“Alexander…” Magnus starts, chancing a glance over at his husband to see the thinly veiled frustration and annoyance there, wondering how much of it is directed at him. “Can we talk privately for a minute?”
Alec actually looks like he might tell him no for a second before his expression softens ever so slightly.
Magnus offers a quick half-smile, half-grimace to the group. “Pardon us. Just going to steal my darling husband for a moment, we won’t be long.”
By the time he’s done speaking Alec is already halfway across the room so Magnus follows Alec out of the front door Simon left open, shutting it behind them.
“What were you thinking, Magnus? You know the whole point of this is to keep her from remembering too much, and now you’re just offering to throw her memories back at her like it’s nothing?” Alec is, rightfully, feeling a little betrayed by Magnus siding with Simon, he can tell. He certainly doesn’t blame him.
“She’s getting her other memories back, Alec. All on her own. But the ones we took from her? SImon’s right, she’ll never have them again unless we get them back. She didn’t choose to give those up, we did that.” Magnus reminds him.
“I know,” Alec admits. “But this wasn’t the plan. I should’ve known better than to let Simon get too close to this…”
“Don’t be too hard on him, Alexander. He only wants his friend back,” Magnus points out. “Tell me you wouldn’t have ruined any plan to do the same for Jace if it were him?”
Alec opens his mouth, hesitates, and closes it again. “That doesn’t make it right,” Alec says finally. “He knew exactly what he was doing. Both of you did. We could’ve talked it over first, but now…”
“Easier to ask for forgiveness than permission,” Magnus says, and there’s a hint of a question behind the words, asking for a bit of forgiveness of his own. “I’m sorry, but I couldn’t look her in the eyes and lie about this. She never wanted the truth hidden from her, not even as a child; Clary fought it every time Jocelyn brought her to me, you know.”
Sometimes Magnus thinks that Alec forgets his history with Clary and her family, with Jocelyn and Luke and Valentine. He watched her grow up, he shaped her childhood by taking those memories and experiences away from her at her mother’s request - Clary’s more than just someone who wandered into his life a year ago.
“Good to know she’s been nothing but trouble her entire life, and not just since Jace bumped into her outside Pandemonium,” Alec says with a roll of his eyes.
Alec is tense. Magnus knows how much he hates things being out of his control. Clary’s memories returning, Simon not blindly following his instructions the way they know Izzy, Jace, and Underhill would (hell, even Magnus was determined to play along for now before Simon broke ranks first), he can sense his husband silently panicking the more variables slip out of his control.
“If we lied to her about this she’d never trust us again. We can’t help her if she won’t come to us. What if she tried to go to the police? What if she ended up turning to someone who’d take advantage of her to help? We’re her best shot,” Magnus points out, standing by the decision he made in the moment.
“I wish I never knew about any of this,” Alec says finally. “If she just got her memories back, and came to us afterward… but you know I can’t let this happen without telling the Clave now. They’re going to want to track her, to monitor everything she does, everywhere she goes. This is exactly what I was trying to avoid by not getting involved but she just had to ruin it by showing up at the Institute, didn’t she?”
Magnus knows things haven’t been easy for Alec this past year. Even before he was Head of the Institute, covering for his siblings, for their involvement with Clary from the start, has always been something that left him uncertain. It only got worse as Head of the Institute, and then Consul. ‘The Law is the Law’ holds a lot more weight when you are the Law, but just the fact that Alec’s here, now, shows he’s still willing to follow his heart over the rules, and that’s part of the reason Magnus has grown to love him over the years.
“You could’ve ignored Izzy’s calls,” Magnus points out. “Or said something to the Clave the moment she told you what happened with Jace. You didn’t have to come here today. I didn’t have to buy her art, or offer the loft as a place to take her, or show up tonight when Simon called me. We both know you care too much to just ignore her while this happens, Alec.”
Alec sighs again, but this time the frustration is with himself. “Yeah, well, it’d be a hell of a lot easier if I could.”
Magnus smiles softly and reaches out to place a hand on Alec’s shoulder. “Last I checked, the man I fell in love with never took the easy way out of anything.” He leans in for a kiss, a short, chaste press of lips that has the tension melting out of Alec’s shoulders and arms immediately as he leans into it.
“How about you go do whatever Shadowhunter things you need to do about this, maybe give Luke a heads-up on the ‘returning Clary’s memories of him’ development? Clary didn’t seem to react negatively to seeing me again, so I’ll stay and take care of things here.” Magnus suggests, the words coming slower and with more weight than a casual offer to ‘babysit’ the others. He doesn’t outright say what taking care of things here entails but the way Alec’s eyes narrow shows that his ever-intuitive husband suspects the implications.
“Magnus-” Alec starts, but Magnus shakes his head.
“Just let me take care of this,” Magnus repeats, cutting him off. He doesn’t want Alec to be entirely in the dark - this isn’t the sort of thing he wants to do behind his back. But he wants Alec to have all the plausible deniability in the world in case there’s fallout. He is, after all, the Consul. “We’ll be fine. I promise. I’ll meet you back home.”
“If anything goes wrong-”
“Nothing will, but if it does you’ll be the first person I call. Now go,” Magnus says, giving Alec one last kiss goodbye before making a shoo-ing motion with his hands. Alec hesitates and Magnus wonders if he’ll let this happen without him, but then Alec nods, turning and waiting expectantly for the portal Magnus opens for him back to Alicante before returning inside to the others.
“Where’s Alec?” Izzy asks immediately.
“Alexander had some business to attend to,” Magnus says candidly. “And so do we. Lorenzo, we’re going to need a few things from your workroom.”
Lorenzo considers Magnus for a moment, shooting a questioning glance Clary’s way which earns him a small nod of confirmation from Magnus.
“I suppose dinner can wait, then,” Lorenzo says, waving his hand back towards the kitchen and sending a flow of yellow magic that direction. “Which one is it?” He asks.
“Valak,” Magnus informs him.
“Of course it is. Surprised he even took them after the last time,” Lorenzo comments casually before turning and vanishing down a side hallway.
“What’s going on?” Clary asks, whipping her head back and forth between the two warlocks so fast she may very well give herself whiplash.
“Nothing is going on,” Izzy states, glaring at Magnus and crossing her arms. “Because we are not doing this behind my brother’s back. No way!”
Magnus moves closer to her so he can lower his voice in response. “Isabelle, your brother left me behind to take care of things here,” he explains, hoping she’ll catch his drift without him implicating Alec in more than he should out loud. The more everyone believes this is him acting on his own, the better. “If you’d like to join him, just say the word. We’ll be fine here if you need to go finish some reports.”
He’s giving her the same out he gave Alexander - if she’d rather keep her nose clean of this, go back to the Institute now and claim she had no knowledge of his immediate plans, he wouldn’t blame her. Studying her reaction he knows her answer before she even opens her mouth again: her expression shifts from that immediate stubborn flash of anger to concern the moment she looks over at Simon and Clary who are talking quietly amongst themselves.
She doesn’t want to leave them. He doesn’t blame her for that, either.
“I’ll stay,” she settles.
“Alright then,” Magnus confirms with a nod, placing a hand on her arm and giving it a light squeeze, a small act of reassurance.
“I don’t suppose there’s any hope this is being relocated elsewhere?” Lorenzo asks upon his return.
“Only if you’re kicking us out,” Magnus states. “It would be the most convenient, however - the warding against anything going wrong is already the strongest in the city, outside the Institute but we’re hardly going there.”
“What could go wrong? Magnus, what are you doing?” Clary asks, still confused.
“Exactly what you wanted, Clarissa,” he says, slipping back into the name she told them to use back at his loft. This is about to become much more stressful for all of them, so the most at ease he can keep her with small considerations like that, the better. “We’re getting your memories back. Well, some of them, like Simon said.”
Clary eyes the supplies in Lorenzo’s arms warily. “And it’s dangerous magic?”
The group shares a look, each one silently asking the others who is going to be the one to break it to Clary that they’re about to summon a demon and hope she doesn’t freak out
“Your memories were given to a memory demon. It’s the safest way to guard them, after all, anything else can be broken or tampered or lost forever. We just have to summon him and get them back,” Lorenzo explains matter-of-factly.
“A what?” Clary replies.
“It’s a very simple summoning. He’ll demand something in return, probably a memory from each of us because he’s terribly dull and predictable, and then you’ll get yours back and we’ll be on our way,” Magnus elaborates.
“No way. Magic is one thing but I’ve seen enough horror movies to know you don’t mess around with summoning demons. I know you said you weren’t some creepy cult but all the signs are stating otherwise right about now.” There’s a panicked edge to Clary’s words and Magnus wonders if, after everything, she simply might not be ready to enter back into the Shadow World.
“What happened to ‘whatever it takes’?” SImon points out.
“Well… yeah, but…” Clary falters, and none of the others push her. They all wait, silent, for her to make her own decision now. “Alright, I guess. I’ll try it.”
“Wonderful!” Magnus exclaims, already moving to push the sofas aside to make space when Lorenzo stops him.
“Oh no you don’t, Bane. You can stay here but we are not summoning anything in my living room. We’re going to the basement where there won’t be any collateral damage done to my Van Gough if things get dicey.”
There’s another moment then where Magnus is half-convinced Clary isn’t going to willingly go with them before she turns and follows Simon and Isabelle, with Magnus bringing up the rear down a set of spiralled stairs and into a mostly empty stone-floored room of Lorenzo’s basement. “This will be perfect. Clarissa, be a dear? Take that black chalk and draw a pentagram on the floor large enough for us to stand around, then go over it with this,” Magnus instructs, taking a glass jar of black sand and handing it to her.
“And I need to make sure everyone here is willing to do their part. The demon will play on any break in concentration, any lack of sincerity in agreeing to whatever his price is. He may only ask me for something, he may ask all of us, but our resolve has to remain strong until the end.” Magnus looks around the group, getting nods and “yes”s from each individual, ending with Clary as she connects the final line within the circle and steps back.
“I’m ready,” she says.
“Everyone take a spot at a point,” Magnus instructs.
Izzy glances down at the simple pentagram on the ground. “Wasn’t the last one much more… elaborate?” She questions.
Magnus thinks back for a moment before giving a slightly surprised chuckle. “Yes, it was. I’m afraid that was a bit of… misdirection on my part. I just needed to buy some time for something before we got started.”
“But all you did was talk to Alec--” Izzy starts before her words trail off into a knowing grin. “Of course you did.” Izzy glances around the circle again. “Don’t you want us to hold hands this time?” Izabelle asks, a sly smirk on her face. “Or is that only a requirement when Alec is around, too?”
At least Magnus has the decency to look a little guilty at being caught, even a full year later. “I plead the fifth.”
“Magnus!” Izzy laughs, shaking her head.
“Can you blame me? Your brother didn’t exactly make things easy for me, I had to take the opportunities as they presented themselves.” Magnus can only shrug at the admission.
“Are you two done discussing Magnus’ horrid courting attempts? In case you forgot, we have a demon to summon, and believe it or not I do have other things to be doing than this,” Lorenzo says.
“Yes. Of course,” Magnus clears his throat. “If everyone’s ready, let’s begin.”

So demons don't have to work for someone? They can just cause mayhem on their own? I figured Valak would be more into that
They’re supposed to pledge themselves to one of the demon generals upon becoming demons but some of them choose not to and remain on their own.
It’s not as peachy keen as it sounds. Sure, you don’t have a superior monitoring you and telling you what to do, but that also means you’re on your own. No one’s gonna come to your aid when you need anything. No one will side with you when you’re in trouble. Unpledged demons tend to get hunted down and eaten by other fledglings because they can kill them without having to worry about starting a turf war. Remaining unpledged is v dangerous but super liberating so it’s a double-edged sword.

Saanufi a Huuva – a channel separating birds and humans
Ileho Saanufi a Huuva saavaliti a Huuva, jute nuhe ilehude haad!
The Huuva Channel separates the island of Huuva, home to many species!
Located north of the main island of Jute (Saaval) is the small island Huuva (Coastal Jutean for “bird”). A nature preserve, it has no permanent human occupants except for some conservation workers and rangers and is instead home to several endemic insect, weed and fern species as well nesting places of the rare Saruan Plover and many other bird species in large numbers.
The Huuva Channel (Saanufi a Huuva, or literally Small Sea of Huuva) shields it from most other human activity. It is a small passage that is tightly controlled, with only a single ferry carrying visitors and scientists to it once a day allowed to serve as a connection.
The ferry port on Saaval is in Netun a Valak (Balak Fort), a settlement that originates as fort of the Balak Empire during its foray into Jute in the 19th century. The fort, known as Watchtower Fort (Netun a Dovi a Netumi) was historically used by imperial soldiers to maintain control of the channel and so monitor one of the possible routes to the city of Numudu, where the main trading posts of the empire were located. Armed patrol ships were regularly crossing the channel to Huuva and artillery was installed both on it and the mainland. It fell into disuse after Numudu was given up as a trading hub, but the remains of it are well preserved, as is the fort complex, which continues to overlook the channel.
A trip to Huuva is about 20 km long and usually takes about an hour and 15 minutes. Nowadays it is popular among birdwatchers, as at any given point of time many of the tens of thousands of the birds of the island will fly low over the channel, looking to catch fish on the sea surface or sometimes fighting other birds.
On arrival, guests and workers disembark on the wharf and are greeted by a yellow 19th century arch with paintings of the Saruan plover on both sides. Adjacent to it is a small eatery, Hemon a Huuva (”The Birdy Kitchen”). It provides a nice view of Saanufi a Huuva with Netun a Valak and its fort being visible on good days in the distance
