Art Deco-Inspired Accessories by Monica Forster Design Studio for Georg Jensen
Tumblr media
Iconic Danish design brand Georg Jensen partnered with Swedish designer Monica Förster, of Monica Förster Design Studio, on a seven-piece collection called Matrix. The Art Deco-inspired series, which includes two cylindrical vases, two square vases, two bowls, and a serving tray, is made from mirrored stainless steel that features a square grid design that gives each piece a graphic yet sculptural look.
The same grid on the vases also appears on the bases of the bowls and the perimeter of the tray adding a bit of visual lightness to the overall designs.
Flowers, or even pencils and brushes, can rest within the perforations individually or in groups to create unique floral (or desk) arrangements.

Fogia launches furniture collection that pays homage to the 1970s
Rich colours, curved shapes and heavy fabrics all feature in the latest collection from Swedish furniture brand Fogia, which is launching at Stockholm Design Week.
A curved armchair by Luca Nichetto, a set of brown-hued ceramic dishes by Note Design Studio and a tan-leather seat by Stefan Borselius are among the 14 products in Fogia's 2018 collection, which combines Scandinavian minimalism with 1970s forms and colours.
Other highlights include a set of geometric upholstered poufs, a side table and shelving unit with matching circular details, and a series of patterned rugs.
"We always strive to make furniture with international elegance," said company CEO Marcus Huber. "We create high-quality furniture with a design that lasts for a long time – that's our philosophy."
Stockholm-based Note Design Studio has contributed three designs to the collection. As well as the pedestal-shaped Upp ceramics, the studio designed a glass pendant light that resembles stretched fabric in shape, and a huge oak table that pays tribute to Japanese joinery.
According to Note's co-founder Cristiano Pigazzini, the table was originally designed as a meeting table for its own office.
"Our idea was to make something that you never throw away, that lasts forever," he explained. "It's a very simple construction, inspired by the Japanese way of pinning."
Pigazzini also worked with the other designers that created pieces for the collection, to ensure they all shared a similar aesthetic.
Italian designer Luca Nichetto took inspiration from a bean when creating the curves of his Mame armchair. It features a rounded profile, black metal legs and plump upholstery.
"The idea was to make a very classic shape – a match between classic Scandinavian design and a classic French chair, with a high back," said Nichetto.
Nichetto also designed the Print rugs, some of which are patterned with small squares that vary in tone and proportion, and some of which are adorned with ladder-like stripes.
Other chairs in the range include a lounge chair with wooden legs by Danish studio Norm Architects and a new version of Andreas Engesvik's Bollo chair, which has become one of the most recognisable items in Fogia's repertoire.
Swiss design duo Diiis created both the small Hawu shelving unit and the Gito side table. The table features a circular inset, which functions as a coaster, while the shelves feature semi-circular bookends.
The collection is completed by three designs from Stockholm-based designers: a new larger version of the modular Retreat sofa – designed by Monica Förster back in 2015 – the flower-inspired Poppy poufs by Nina Jobs, and the double-layer glass Big Sur table by Simon Klenell and Kristoffer Sundin.
The collection was unveiled at the Haymarket hotel as part of Stockholm Design Week 2018, which continues until 11 February. It is also on show at the Stockholm Furniture and Light Fair, which opened today.

Friday Five with Monica Förster
Monica Förster is a Lappland-born, Stockholm-based designer easily becoming one of the most well-known within the Swedish design world and beyond. She founded her eponymous studio in 1999 and since then she’s collaborated with an extensive roster of global brands, including Bernhardt Design, Cappellini, Poltrona Frau, Offecct, De Padova, Tacchini, Modus, E&Y Japan, Volvo, Alessi, Zero, and Swedese, a Swedish furniture manufacturer where she’s also the creative director. One of her most recent designs was the Kashan lounge chair for Bernhardt Design, which perfectly showcases her ability to make any piece one that can not only work in any setting, but it transcends decades making each one timeless. You can find her work exhibited internationally along with winning many awards, some of which have recognized her personally, including ELLE Decoration Design of the Year 2015, Interior Innovation Award Selection at imm Cologne in 2017, and Best Interior Accessory for ELLE Decoration Sweden in 2018, to name a few. Continue reading to find out more about Förster’s design process, favorite color, and where she’s from, in this week’s Friday Five.
1. The creative process Our studio has a big interest in different materials and how the material can change your way of thinking. Thought comes from within. There are origins that must be respected. There are stories to be heard, skills and experience to be observed. Then comes research and experimentation. In the end, the form emerges.
Working with paper you will always discover things you didn’t anticipate from the beginning. Also, you don’t need to worry about making mistakes and damaging an expensive material, and when you stop thinking you start working intuitively.
Mistakes occurring during the sketch process working with paper are consciously evaluated and brought into the process.

2. Technology I always try to work in a cross-disciplinary way, and invent and renew typologies. The studio integrate new technology with an artisanal way of working. We seek for a solution to a need and answers to questions. I believe in collaboration and exchanging ideas with people from different fields like ergonomists, specialists regarding different materials and techniques is a great way to learn and grow. We don’t know how or in which way we will use technology in the future, maybe it is something we can or can not live without. Who knows what the future will bring.
3. Black Black represents the night, always present in our long winters in Sweden. The night means silence and we like to connect the design we make with silence. Our designs don’t shout, they whisper. In the studio we like to work with structure and tactility and it is a big part of our process. The starting point, however, for every project is the the question why. Our main approach is working with ideas and concepts.
4. Lappland I like to find inspiration in my daily life, and sometimes I go back to my origin in the north of Sweden to find ideas. Some of my most interesting work combines my background with the heritage of the producer. I get inspiration for use of light and organic shapes from my experience of growing up close to the Arctic circle. I like our projects to communicate through feelings and emotions. This is also an important part of our projects.
5. Human My objectives from the start has always been to design objects that are long-lasting. The ideal project for me is when you are not able to tell when the project was designed, if it is made today or twenty years ago. I think that many of the projects that we design in the studio represents just that.
Working with creative direction, I work with strategies, ideas and a vision on how to move a company forward in creating jobs, educating workers by design and thinking outside the box. Collaborating with the Bosnian company Zanat, has influenced our work in the studio and we have become more aware of working with socioeconomic sustainability. I also try to influence other producers to move along the sustainability path. For example while working with Swedese as creative director, I have implemented a creative workshop and a new business area designing items, using recycled wood from leftover material from the Swedese factory.

Monica Förster Design Studio Collaborates with Marrakech Design on Two Tile Collections
Monica Förster Design Studio collaborated with Swedish tile company Marrakech Design on two encaustic cement tile collections, one inspired by the colors of Sweden and the other by arches found in art nouveau architecture.
The Four Elements series features a Noorland (the northernmost part of Sweden) inspired color scheme – forest green, sky blue, pitch black, and brick red – with modern gradient, watercolor-like patterns that bring together the past and the future, as well as nature and the city.
Breaking The Wave explores a unique shape not seen in tiles, which was inspired by arches typically found in art nouveau architecture. When laid out, the tile lines form a hypnotic wave, transforming a traditional style into a contemporary pattern.

The Solid Wood Sana Dining Chair Will Hug You While You Sit
The Stockholm-based Monica Förster Design Studio continues collaborating with Bosnian furniture brand Zanat, who just unveiled the Sana dining chair during Salone del Mobile. The solid wood chair is both lightweight and stackable and with its curved backrest hugging you, it’s ideal for dining. The chair’s inner curve is sculpted for maximum comfort while the outer side is hand-carved with a textured pattern for added visual interest. Plus, it gives the chair a modern, handcrafted quality.
The chair is suitable for residential or commercial situations and it comes in various color combinations of the frame, backrest, and seat.

The Kashan Chair Is Not Defined by Any Time Period
Monica Förster Design Studio merges a curvy, overstuffed seat with blade-thin metal legs for a contrasting look in the Kashan chair for Bernhardt Design. It was designed to span the decades by not having a defined style that referenced any specific time period. It looks comfortable yet refined, playful yet restrained, giving it both a futuristic and classic appearance.
The super thin legs supporting the plump form makes it look as if the seat is floating above the ground.
The chair is outfitted with a custom suspension spring seat from high-density molded foam for elevated comfort.

Beyond Black by Monica Förster Design Studio
Monica Förster Design Studio extended their collaboration with Bosnian furniture manufacturer Zanat with Beyond Black, a sleek, sultry exhibition that merges the art of Bosnian craft with Sami spiritualism. The wood carving gives nod to traditional Bosnian techniques, while Sami-inspired pewter thread embroidery wraps itself around the the wood. Combining the two is unexpected, but leads to an interesting pairing that adds a contemporary twist.
