Quincy Jones, the music producer and industry titan, has died aged 91. Jones was arguably the most versatile pop cultural figure of the 20th century, perhaps best known for producing the albums Off the Wall, Thriller and Bad for Michael Jackson in the 1980s, which made the singer the biggest pop star of all time. Jones also produced music for Sinatra, Aretha Franklin, Donna Summer and many others.

Moneta Sleet, Jr. (February 14, 1926 - September 30, 1996) was a Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer involved in the Civil Rights movement. His parents, Ozetta Allensworth Sleet and Moneta Sleet, Sr., raised him in Owensboro, Kentucky. At a very young age, his parents gave him a small box camera, which he used to take pictures of his family around the house. This marked the beginning of his lifelong love for photography.
He attended Kentucky State University, where he continued his passion for photography. He served with an all-Black unit in WWII, He returned to Kentucky State University to obtain his BA. He received his MA in Journalism from NYU.
He worked for multiple African American publications throughout his career. He began as a sportswriter for the Amsterdam News in New York City and the magazine Our World. Johnson Publishing Company offered him a position (1955-96).
He traveled to Liberia, Libya, Ghana, Kenya, Norway, the Soviet Union, South America, and the US. He married Juanita (1950) they had two sons and a daughter.
One of his many assignments was to cover Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. He reported on the Montgomery Bus Boycott, King’s acceptance of the Nobel Peace Prize, and the Selma to Montgomery March and was given access to the King family at home. He photographed King’s funeral. His image of the grieving Coretta Scott King won the Pulitzer Prize for feature photography. He was the first Black man to receive a Pulitzer and the first person to win an award while working for a Black publication.
He earned the Citation for Excellence from the Overseas Press Club of America, and awards from the National Urban League and the National Association of Black Journalists. He was able to exhibit his art in notable spaces, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. His hometown of Owensboro declared the date Moneta Sleet Jr. Day and installed a bronze historical marker in commemoration of his contributions to the civil rights movement and journalism. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence #sigmapiphi

Moneta J. Sleet Jr. (February 14, 1926- 1996) American press photographer best known for his work at Ebony magazine. Sleet was the first African-American man to win the Pulitzer Prize, and the first African American to win the award for journalism. Sleet was born in Owensboro, Kentucky. He was editor of the school newspaper at Western High School, his alma mater. After serving in an all black unit in WW2 he graduated cum laude from Kentucky State College (now Kentucky State University), a historically black college. He went on to obtain a master's degree in journalism from New York University (NYU) in 1950. After his education at NYU he was a sports journalist for the Amsterdam News in New York and then John P. Davis' magazine Our World. Sleet began working for Ebony magazine in 1955.
