I decided to read the original Tokyo Mew Mew manga. This author note stuck out:
Tumblr media
Because a couple characters still kept these color coded names. Ichigo MOMO-miya. Lettuce MIDORI-kawa.
I already knew the Mews' first names and the alien trio's names came from foods, but hadn't known about colors being incorporated into their names.
So out of curiosity, I looked up Japanese words for colors:
Tumblr media
Source
Here's some additional color trivia:
The four main colors in Japanese culture are black, white, red, and blue, with the last two representing all warm and cool colors respectively. (Green especially used to be considered blue.)
The word for color is "iro", thus why many of the additional colors use "iro" as a suffix.
So with those in mind, I realized the Mews arenโ€™t the only characters named after colors. (Full name meanings are pulled from the fandom wiki, but here I'll list a name, the word part referring to a color, and said word part's literal meaning in Japanese unless otherwise indicated.)
Ichigo Momomiya: "momo" = peach
Minto Aizawa: "ai" = indigo
Retasu Midorikawa: "midori" = green
Bu-Ling Huang or Purin Fong: "huang" is the Mandarin form of ้ปƒ = yellow
Zakuro Fujiwara: "fuji" = wisteria
Ryou Shirogane: "shiro" = white
Keiichiro Akasaka: "aka" = red
And characters in spin-offs and sequels:
Ringo Akai: "aka" = red
Beri Shirayuki: "shira" = white
Tasuko Meguro: g โ†’ k in "kuro" = black
And finally...
Masaya Aoyama: "ao" = blue
The Blue Knight. Deep Blue. The aliens' messiah, if you treat the first name as a Japanese-to-English pun.
It was there in the name all along.

Traditional Kimono Colors
This could be useful when creating art and deciding what colors to paint their kimono. For example, during certain eras in the past, some colors known asย kinjikiย can only be used by high ranking officials, while other colors known asย yurushiiroย are used by commoners. Ordinary people were forbidden to wear bright clothes by the order of the Edo shogunate, so people used to wear kimono in brown, grey or blue colors.
Different colors also had different associations. In the Edo period, asagi blue (the color of the Shinsengumi uniform) was associated with low-ranking countryside samurai, so the Shinsengumi members werenโ€™t satisfied with their uniform.
In the Imperial Court, different colors denoted different ranks.ย
Tumblr media
Geisha also had rules about what color combinations should be worn in each month. Their kimono would change to suit the season like so:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Japanese have developed their own collection of traditional colors, known as dentoushoku. The four core colors are white, black, red and blue. The names for these were mentioned earliest in historical texts and they have the most meanings attached to them. Only these four could be considered pure primary colors. (source)
According to thisย chart, the colors are often named after nature and are traditionally grouped into series. They look more muted than modern colors because theyโ€™re based on ancient dyeing techniques. These colors are commonly used in daily life: (ๆกœ่‰ฒ(Sakura iro), ๆกƒ่‰ฒ(momo iro), ่–„็ด…(usubeni), ็Š็‘š่‰ฒ(sango iro), ๅฐ่ฑ†่‰ฒ(azuki iro), ็Ž‰ๅญ่‰ฒ(tamago iro), ๆฉ™่‰ฒ(daidai iro), ่Œ้ป„(moegi), ็ฉบ่‰ฒ(sora iro)), while others are only mentioned in literature and used for kimono (source)
Tumblr media
This site contains explanations of the names and history for a long list of traditional Japanese colors.
This site also contains a large list of colors with categories, such as Kimono colors, Edo Period colors, Japanese Painting and Ukiyo-e colors
For an immensely detailed and well-illustrated document of Japanโ€™s old colors and their associated names, itโ€™s worth visiting the beautiful website Nippon Colors.
[Edit] The Aizu Domain had its own color rank system for samurai and ashigaru (footsoldiers).

Harem AU rambles- Corruption and twins (mainly the Apple Empire twin sets and related ramblings)
So! In the harem AU corruption, Killer's SOUL issue, etc are basically "genetic"/hereditary conditions that are passed down (although are still viewed as "curses"/demonic regardless by a lot of people). In corruption specifically, you will always have a twin with teal magic who is corrupted and a yellow magic "carrier," both of whom can have children with the genetic condition (although it can be a yellow magic "shattered" twin and purple carrier, or the even rarer orange "radiance" twin and purple carrier). Usually you wont find more than one set of corrupted+carrier in a generation of a family, and while technically anyone in the family can pass on the "gene" the corrupted individual and their twin have the highest likelihood of passing it down. (Can you tell I adore reading about genetics lol)
Anyways! So, the Apple Empire is unique that the previous emperor (Nox and Reve's father) produced not one, but three sets of corrupted individuals and their twins. (There is a whoooole reason for that, but that's major spoilers). The first twins, Nox and Reve, were born to the Empress in the middle of a long, tough war that lasted until not long before they took the throne. Morph and Pyrite, who were born to the Queen of the Witch Kingdom, who was said to have been so entranced by the Apple Kingdom Emperor that they slept together. And then the last set, Nova and Star, whom the Empress died giving birth to and it was believed the previous Emperor died of a broken heart by her passing. Because two deaths happened to coincide with their birth, the servants and some nobles started to believe (and spread a rumor that still persists into the actual story) that Nox is cursed and basically an omen of ill fortune, which led to a lot of problems for him.
In the Apple Kingdom it is tradition for the children of the royal family to be "given" companions/occasionally older children to look after them, that way the children have children their own age the royal family approves of/babysitters. Nox and Reve were "given" Mari, who was sold to the Apple Kingdom as a slave (and was technically a slave belonging to the princes). Nox eventually fell in love with Mari and wants to make her his Empress (Reve has a few candidates and technically wants to marry all of them but shush), and made her his consort to free her from slavery (done before he took the throne and eventually abolished slavery). (Star and Nova have... Multiple children to play with, actually lol. Orion (teen!Killer), Pyxis (teen!Dust), Vega (teen!Horror), Cyrus (child!Cross), Sumi (teen!Ink), Iro (a different teen!Ink), and Glass. A majority of these kids are orphans because Nox cant stop taking them all in lol).
Technically Nox was the crown prince, but he and Reve insisted on ruling the kingdom as a pair of rulers instead of just one. They also set a condition for marriage proposals that they both have to be married at the same time (to keep things fair, but also to keep proposals down while they try to convince the nobles to let them marry who they want.)
Other notable corrupted twins in the fic are Swad and Swan (who's situation is a whole nother post, but Swad is Nox's consort and Swan's location is unknown), Lunar and Solar (princes of the Kingdom of Giants, and aptly sized), Kage and Yume (Ukiyo kingdom princes obviously already introduced), Bella and Daisy (extremely rare case where both are carriers, Bella is "passive" technically), and Shard and Nighty (Shard is a shattered!Dream and assassin, Nighty lives with the mysterious Seer named Momo in the woods. Momo is... A trip I swear).

Like compleatly outside of a shipping standpoint Iโ€™m still SO dissapointed that the anime made Denkiโ€™s manga moment about thinking about his friends who are so important to him just be ship bait for ONE character.
I donโ€™t like ka/mi/j/iro at all (itโ€™s extremly one-sided and she has a much deeper connection with Momo and it feels very comp-het to me) but I still would have been sad even if I liked the ship.
The manga is so good on focusing on platonic love, which is rather rare in shonen, and the anime keeps falling into the same old ship bait routine.
Just one of the many things I will never forgive Bones for regarding mha lmao :((

Fifty Shades of Gray (part 2)
Continued from Part 1
Soraironezu (sky-colored gray) ็ฉบ่‰ฒ้ผ  #B8C8D1
Tumblr media
a light gray with bluish tints, like a lightly cloudy sky.
a type of gray that was popular in the late Edo period, and is considered an "iki" (fashionable) color that beautifully expresses the bright sky in slightly cloudy weather.
Akatsukinezu (dawn gray) ๆš้ผ  #D3CfD9
Tumblr media
a gray color with a slightly light purple tinge.
In the Edo period, the color name "nezumi" became popular. The term "nezumi" does not always refer to gray, but also to a dusky pink or grayish pink. (source)
Kasumi-iro (haze) ้œž่‰ฒ #C8C2C6
Tumblr media
a hazy color, a gray with a slight purplish tinge, or a light purple with a slight bluish tinge. Like a haze over the hills and fields. It's a light purple color that's pretty close to white.
The color of mourning clothes "Kasumi-no-Koromo" (้œžใฎ่กฃ)
The word 'kasumi' itself refers to a state in which a distant view becomes hazy due to fog or smoke.
Usukumonezu (light cloud gray) ่–„้›ฒ้ผ  #D4DCDA
Tumblr media
a light grayish green color. Light cloud-like gray.
similar to silver gray, silk gray, tin gray, and silver.
Chigusanezu (thousand grass gray) ๅƒ่‰้ผ  #BED3CA
Tumblr media
a light grayish green color. Chigusa-iro (mint green color) with a hint of gray
Chigusa-iro refers to the medium blue of indigo dyeing used to dye the loincloths of store servants in the Edo period, and the grayer version of the color was called Chigusanezu.
Yanaginezumi (willow gray) ๆŸณ้ผ  #C8D5BB
Tumblr media
the green-tinged gray color of willows. Light grayish green with yellowish tint.
Edo period.
In the "forty-eight browns and a hundred grays" of the late-Edo period, this color was also called "่ฑ†ใŒใ‚‰่Œถ" (beanstalk brown). The reason the same color was called by two different names, brown and gray, is because it's a low-saturated color. Generally, brown is a bitter and warm color. Gray is said to be soft and cool. Naturally, there is also a color called willow brown as a variant of willow gray.
Sakuranezumi (sakura gray) ๆกœ้ผ  #D8C6BC
Tumblr media
a pale cherry blossom color with a light crimson tint that is gray or light black and slightly dull.
The use of the color name "nezumi" has been seen since the early Edo period, but "sakuranezumi" probably only came to be used after the Genroku period (1688-1704).
Umenezu (plum gray) ๆข…้ผ  #977F7B
Tumblr media
A grayish purplish-red, similar to red plum blossoms
Meiji Period.
This color is dyed by iron mordant dyeing using plums. Umezome, which also uses plums as dyeing material, has existed since the Muromachi period (1336-1573), but its color is a light brown with reddish tints.
Kikyo-nezu (bellflower gray) ๆก”ๆข—้ผ  #95949A
Tumblr media
light gray bluish-purple color. Light purple with a slight grayish tinge.
It's said that this color name is derived from the grayish purple color of the bellflower.
Botan-nezu (peony gray) ็‰กไธน้ผ  #D3CCD6
Tumblr media
light purple with a slight grayish tinge. A gray color with a peony tinge.
Peonies are famous for their bright reds and pinks, but blue-colored ones are also available.
Fujinezumi (wisteria gray) ่—ค้ผ  #817EA4
Tumblr media
a subdued blue-purple color with a hint of purple wisteria and a hint of gray.
Edo period. Various dyeing methods for this color were introduced in the Edo period. The dyeing method is described in "Somono hayashinan" (1853, Kaei 6) as "equal parts of Soho water, a little bit of Karan indigo, a little bit of iron plaster, a little bit of momo peel, and a little bit of lime water.
It has been favored as a base color for women's kimonos since the mid-Edo period, and was frequently in vogue during the Meiji and Taisho periods.
Around 1894, it was called "shinkoma-iro" and was introduced in the fashionable costume magazine "Miyako no Hana", so it became popular among the general public along with the "Flower and Willow World"
Fujisusutake (wisteria soot bamboo) ่—ค็…ค็ซน #5A5359
Tumblr media
a wisteria-tinged, soot bamboo color with a dark grayish-purple blush.
already being used in the early Edo period, as seen in the base color of kosode in "Genji Hinakata," a book of kosode hinagata published in 1687.
a color chart in the "Tegami-moyo Setsuyo," an instruction manual for dyeing in the Edo period, includes the following text: "Wisteria soot. The color of a reddish brown gray dyed in the color of plum".
There are about 20 color names with "susutake" (soot bamboo) in them, including "Yanagisusutake," "Ginsusutake," "Higosusutake," and "Sharesusutake," and many of them appear in color samples and hinagata books from the Genroku to Hoei periods of the Edo period.
Azukinezu (red bean gray) ๅฐ่ฑ†้ผ  #715454
Tumblr media
a reddish gray color. Azuki-iro (red bean color) tinged gray.
In the Edo period, the name comes from adding "nezu" (gray) to a color duller than azuki-iro. It's a part of the "a hundead grays" family, which also includes cochineal gray and red gray.
Budou-nezumi (grape gray) ่‘ก่„้ผ  #705B67
Tumblr media
A grape-dyed, grayish color. Dark grayish reddish purple.
thought to have appeared in the late Edo period.
Since the ancient name for grapes was "ebi" (shrimp), this budou-nezumi was also called "ebi-nezumi" (shrimp gray).
Tokinezu (ibis gray) ้ด‡้ผ  #E4D2D8
Tumblr media
a light pinkish gray color
named after the Japanese crested ibis
Yamabato-iro (mountain dove) ๅฑฑ้ณฉ่‰ฒ #767C6B
Tumblr media
a dull yellowish-green color with a strong grayish tinge, like the feathers of a mountain dove.
Yamabato means "blue dove," and the color name is derived from the color of its feathers.
"Kikujin" and "Aoshirotsurubami" are similar colors representing the color "blue" in the prohibited colors list, and their use was forbidden to the general public.
Incidentally, this is the color of the robe worn by the emperor, which was called "yamahato-iro robe" or "kikujin rode" or "aoshirotsurubami robe".
It was dyed with kariyasu and purple root as in the case of Kikujin and Aoshirotsurubami.
Hatobanezumi (dove feather gray) ้ณฉ็พฝ้ผ  #9E8B8E
Tumblr media
a reddish grayish-purple color that is a combination of light purple wisteria and gray.
the color of the back feathers of mountain doves
in the "Teikan Patterns and Setsuyo", it is written, "Hatobanezumi: yamabato-iro is different from this color", and a purplish gray color chart showing Hatobanezumi is pasted on it.
It is assumed that this dyeing started in the late Edo period, when a large variety of gray colors with names that ended with "-nezumi" appeared.
Nandonezu (closet gray) ็ดๆˆธ้ผ  #4C6473
Tumblr media
an ashy, austere blue color
also called "Omeshinando" (ๅพกๅฌๅพก็ดๆˆธ, closet-colored silk crepe)
originally meant "A closet made of silk crepe" (ๅพกๅฌ็ธฎ็ทฌใฎๅพก็ดๆˆธ).
"ๅพกๅฌ" is a respectful term for "to wear," and the 11th Shogun, Ienari Tokugawa, was a great admirer of high-grade crepe, which is why the word "ๅพกๅฌ" came to be used to refer to that type of crepe.
"็ดๆˆธ" is a room where clothing and furnishings are stored. It's a typical color of the Edo period, named for the meaning of "dark place," and is a dark blue with greenish tints.
In other words, this color name seems to have originated from the color of the "ๅพก็ดๆˆธ"-colored crepe worn by the Shogun.
Incidentally, there are other colors with "ๅพกๅฌ" in its name: "ๅพกๅฌ่Œถ" and "ๅพกๅฌ้‰„"
Asaginezu (light scallion gray) ๆต…่‘ฑ้ผ  #94A8B0
Tumblr media
an austere gray color with a bluish-green tinge, similar to the color of a cloudy sky. In terms of hue, it is closer to "Asagi-iro" with a hint of gray.
created during the Edo period, when gray colors were in vogue.
The color name literally derives from gray with "asagi-iro" tints
Fukagawanezumi (Fukagawa gray) ๆทฑๅท้ผ  #85A1A0
Tumblr media
a light bluish-greenish gray. The light indigo dye turns greenish blue and is called "asagi-iro", but Fukagawanezumi is a more subdued version of this asagi-iro color. However, it's more saturated than Asaginezu
This color became popular in the late Edo period, and its name derives from the fact that it was favored by the frugal young people of Fukagawa in Edo and geisha who disliked glamor and preferred austerity.
After the Meireki Fire (1657), a common pleasure quarter centering on Tomioka Hachiman Shrine was born in Fukagawa, Edo. The area was home to a lumberyard and many lumber merchants, and it is said to have been, in a sense, the cultural center of Edo, where the Tatsumi geisha, with their enthusiasm and chivalrous spirit, were active. Fukagawanezumi was favored in the most chic Fukagawa area of Edo, and eventually became popular among the common people of Edo.
Minatonezumi (Minato gray) ๆนŠ้ผ  #77969A
Tumblr media
a light bluish-greenish gray. The color name comes from the minato paper used for koshibari, a sliding door and wall covering made in the village of Minato in Osaka.
In the latter half of the Edo period, colors with a stylish and fashionable feel came to be favored in contrast to the luxurious and gaudy colors of the previous period, and gray colors such as Minatonezumi became very popular as "forty-eight browns and a hundred grays".
Edonezu (Edo gray) ๆฑŸๆˆธ้ผ  #998D86
Tumblr media
Brownish gray. Yellowish-reddish gray.
Edo period.
It became popular along with other browns and grays from the mid-Edo period onward. Also called "chanezumi. It appears to have been dyed with yamamomo (bayberry) or ume (plum). Also called "่Œถ้ผ " (brown gray) and "ๅฝ“ไธ–้ผ " (modern gray).
Saganezu (Saga gray) ๅตฏๅณจ้ผ  #B08D84
Tumblr media
a brownish gray color.
It was a popular color in the late Edo period and is one of the "48 browns and a hundred grays".
Saga is located in the northwestern part of Kyoto, a region associated with the culture of the imperial court and known for its many beautiful temples: Arashiyama for its cherry blossoms, Tenryuji Temple for its autumn leaves, Daikakuji Temple, and Togetsu Bridge. The elegant and gentle atmosphere of this color may have been associated with the name "Saga," and thus the name was given to this color.
Saganezu emphasizes the elegant image of the color by adding the elegant "Saga" to the name. The popularity of this color may be said to be a triumph of the naming sense of the dyer or draper who gave it the color name.
Miyakonezu (capital gray) ้ƒฝ้ผ  #A3858C
Tumblr media
a warm, reddish gray.
Just by adding "Miyako" (capital) to the gray color, it gives a bit of a sophisticated image, though it does not refer to the capital of Edo but rather Kyoto.
It seems that Edo and Kyoto have different tastes in colors. The most obvious ones are Edo purple and Kyoto purple. The bluish purple was preferred in Edo, while reddish, flamboyant purple was preferred in Kyoto. In this sense, Miyakonezu also has a reddish tinge. It may be that it was a rat color that Kyoto people preferred. (source)
Naniwanezu (Naniwa gray) ๆตช่Šฑ้ผ  #D8BEBD
Tumblr media
a pale, austere crimson-red color. Naniwa is an old name for the area around Osaka City, and the color is named after the name of the place. It was one of the fashionable colors of the time, known as "forty-eight browns and a hundred grays".
If you read "ๆตช่Šฑ" as "nami no hana", it means salt, and perhaps the color name may have been created by combining salt and the name of the place, as the natural sea salt that was common in Osaka at the time contained many impurities and had this light reddish hue.
In any case, the way in which the reddish tint was added to the humble color of gray shows the spirit of the Osaka merchants, who were known as the "kitchen of the nation," toward the Shogunate.
Incidentally, like "Naniwanezu", there are other colors derived from names of places in the Kansai region, such as "Miyakonezu," named after Kyoto, and "Saganezu," named after Saga, but perhaps because they are both from the Kansai region, the color tones are a bit similar.

surprise! Iro is also the avatar because of fucking course he is
Momo can fruitbend
Concept: Aang takes the gaang into the spirit world to help him deal with A Thing. Except heโ€™s never brought multiple people into the spirit realm before and so he mucks it up on the return trip - and everyone ends up swapping bending abilities
