“THE GUARDIAN”
by Molly Rose Freeman
“One day, Atlanta-based muralist Molly Rose Freeman realized that her brain, imagination and soul had been possessed” says Nashville Word of Mouth. “Patterns, inspired by spiritual spaces and iconography, she decided would be the official subject matter of her work.” Close to legally blind since birth, Durham, North Carolina native Freeman has always looked at the world in close-up. “The microscopic nature of my world allowed me to recognize that everything is made up of shapes and patterns” she says, expressing her fascination in both manmade pattern, including Ottoman mosaics and illuminated manuscripts, and natural, such as in wind maps and cell patterns. This mural on South 21st Ave. in Hollywood, Florida was painted in 2013 for the Downtown Hollywood Mural Project.  @mollyrosefree

“So now it is more of a meditation on how things grow. There was sort of this parallel realization when I was starting to work on patterns that I was also interested in how patterns relate to the rest of the universe. Our universe runs on certain patterns, even if we can’t recognize them. Somehow it feels like I am communing with whatever force that makes things grow or join together or evolve.” - Molly Rose Freeman

Did you know that hand painted, original murals can be less expensive than way-finding graphics? Privately commissioned art murals, like these by local artist Molly Rose Freeman, can wake up otherwise dreary and empty walls, injecting energy and meaning into moments like the walk in from the parking lot, or waiting at the elevator. Who doesn't want to work in a place where even the cinderblock inspires them?

Lost in the Trees / Farmer Foodshare / Molly Freeman
Tumblr media
We teamed up with friend/artist Molly Freeman and Upperatus to design a line of shirts, the proceeds of which go to help Farmer Foodshare. Farmer Foodshare is a fantastic nonprofit based in central North Carolina that helps connect those in need with local, healthy food.
These limited-editions shirts will only be available through the month of April via Upperatus' website.  To learn more about the project, pick up a shirt, and help us raise money for a great cause, go here.

RITES: Asheville NC, 2011
RITES is a collaboration between myself, dancer/choreographer Garth Grimball, and musician/composer Michael Libramento. We built a free-standing backdrop on the site of a leveled transmission repair shop along the banks of the French Broad River in Asheville's River Arts District. I painted a mural on-site over one month, and at the end of that time we showcased a one-time performance of jazz-fusion dance set to a live, original percussion score. The piece was inspired by the rituals of Spring, as well as the environment and momentum of the river around us. Special thanks to RiverLink, River Arts District Association, Asheville Mural Project, Arts2People, Steve Spurgeon, Court McCracken, all the dancers and musicians who volunteered their time, and our many sponsors who made this possible.

Detail of my part: So K.T.,Jesse, and Angel took us to Las Animas for the day and we had amazing fish and aguachile and rum, local whiskey, raicilla (moonshine) and lots of beer. We mentioned we were getting itchy to paint, and I had a couple little bottles of acrylic on me, so KT talked to the bar owner and he let @mollyrosefree and I go to town #mollyrosefreeman #olive47 #murals #mexico #tortuga #lasanimas #stars #jellyfish
