I wanted you to know that I have a daughter. I have a daughter that you would really, really like. Because she and you are…I'm so sorry. It isn't really…What must you think of me? I'm, um…I'm just going to tell you. I…I am…You…It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter. I can't say it anyway. Let's just leave it at goodbye.

There is something equally beautiful and haunting about the music of Emahoy Tsege Mariam Gebru. She was a nun who lived in a convent in Ethiopia and once said, ""I took off my shoes and went barefoot for 10 years. No shoes, no music, just prayer."
She recorded her music in Germany with the proceeds going to various charitable causes. Mississippi Records sends profits to the Emahoy Tsege Mariam Music Publisher and Foundation to "assist in continuing her life-long mission of using music as a vessel to care for those who have been abandoned by society, or harmed by strife."
This was actually the second volume released by Mississippi Records. We posted about "Souvenirs" this year. The Bandcamp page states "her [Emahoy Tsege Mariam Gebru] compositions and unique playing style live somewhere between Erik Satie, Debussy, liturgical music of the Coptic Ethiopian Church, and Ethiopian traditional music. It is some of the most moving piano music you will ever hear!"
For me, it recalls the feeling I get listening to the work of Molly Drake or The Caretaker.

Molly Drake - Love Isn't a Right
Love isn't a right, it's got to be earned. Love isn't a right that's got to be learned. Maybe you spent your natural life loving husband or loving wife; were you loving and was your love returned? Love's nobody's fool and nobody's slave, Love won't go to school and learn to behave. Ride your love on an easy rein, If Love can go it comes back again. Love will haunt us from cradle to the grave. Love's a whisper, Love's a shout, Love's a flame that could blow out, Love's all beauty but make it a duty and Love will lie right down and die. Love, Love is a germ you'll never resist. Love, Love's the eternal will-o-the-wisp. Follow him through the darkest day, Love will glimmer and light your way, but grab at him and he flickers away out of sight. Love's enchanted, don't take it for granted, Follow him, isn't a right.

After hearing ‘Poor Boy’ from her son’s album Bryter Layter, Molly even penned a song in response entitled ‘Poor Mum’, which sees her address the themes carved out by Nick. In a later Guardian article, Gabrielle revealed: “I don’t think Nick even knew she wrote that song. But, yes, she’s saying: ‘You’ve got those emotions. Well, I got ’em too actually. We’re not just sitting here in the background.'”
Molly was devastated when her only son passed away, whom she had passionately encouraged to pursue his dreams. She was one of Nick’s biggest supporters, and her hopeful nature is best reflected in her song ‘Dream Your Dreams’. She sings: “Dream your dreams if it’s the last thing you do/ Never mind if they don’t ever come true/ Something grows from them at sight and gleaming/ The seed of magic lies in all our dreaming.”

Watching the first episode of Ashes to Ashes for the first time in a decade and surprised to find myself sobbing uncontrollably when Alex kisses Molly goodbye and says she'll be back for her birthday cake. It's partly knowing that they will never see each other again and partly that I've become a parent myself since this first aired, but it hits a lot harder than I expected.

This is a Stucky song right?!??
With Steve's didactic memory, and having recently read Thirteen Letters by dropdeaddream on AO3 - the lines about the oranges in this song have destroyed me:
And we can share a memory as every lover must
And I remember oranges
I remember oranges
I remember oranges
And you remember dust

I can feel something from you, Alex. A sadness. You're physically present, but really, you're elsewhere.

I'm not at all sure how I ran across this, but I was sold by the cover which made me think of the Molly Drake LP. Penny Carson Nichols (Trinidad, Colorado) apparently privately released "Trinidad Seed" to friends. Lisa Wheeler found it in a Colorado thrift store, and contacted Nichols.
Douglas McGowan (Yoga Records) got his friend Chris Cohen (yes, the musician Chris Cohen who recently released his 4th album on Hardly Art) to remaster this and here we are with a beautiful, authentic and stripped down album.
Best of all, the write up on Bandcamp used nearly all the comps that came to mind - "Penny’s laconic style will undoubtedly appeal to all fans of Sibylle Baier, Connie Converse, Molly Drake, and Vashti Bunyan." My addition would be Norma Tanega.

We tramped the open moorland in the rainy April weather
And came upon the little inn that we had found together
The landlord gave us toast and tea and stopped to share a joke
And I remember firelight
I remember firelight
I remember firelight
And you remember smoke
