This is an interesting exercise. I'm gonna try to make it diverse, though I'm afraid it's gonna be mostly me meeting famous people LOL

I visited the White Collar sets (met the cast and crew, saw them filming, gave TDK a kiss ;-))

I've met Harrison "Jack" Smith, the one geologist that went to the Moon! (all other astronauts were test pilots)

I've become "IRL" friend with several fandom friends.

I have a PhD in Cosmochemistry (it's like geology applied to all solar system rocky bodies). As such, I've studied particles from the Wild 2 comet, brought by the Stardust mission.

I've walked on the Moho in Oman! (the Moho is the crust/mantle limit, which, most of the time is 30 km deep in the ground, but can exceptionally be brought to the surface by plate tectonic.)

The Westernest I've been is Hawaii. The Easternest is Japan.

I got tickets for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris!

I've told Gabriel Byrne, Tim DeKay and Ioan Gruffudd how much they mean to me (Gabriel and Ioan probably don't remember me by now... At least Tim does <3 )

I have great parents and for that I'll be eternally grateful. Last example of my mom's awesomeness: she heard on the radio a doc about asexuality and she sent me the link, figuring out it would talk to me. We subsequently had a conversation about it. But like, it's not as much that I came out to my mom, as my mom figured me out.

A friend (see point 3 LOL) just invited me to a Bruce Springsteen concert tonight so... I guess I'm about to go see Springsteen on stage?!

Una vez estaba escuchando musica a inicios de 2024 y escribi esta cosa en mi block de notas, no sé que opinar sobre ello, pero es una excusa para pasar esta playlist que definitivamente te pone en un mood raro :>

No habia nadie excepto aquella extraña. La lluvia caía insensantemente en el centro de aquella ciudad. Las gotas bajaban por los postes de luz apagada. Se reflejaban en los paneles de vidrio que encasillaban las lamparas, las gotas en el suelo se unian con otras en el espacio que había entre cada bloque del suelo. El ambiente estaba inusualmente colorido, como si en muchas partes moho empezaba a crecer en las estructuras, pero solo se podia ver su reflejo en lo empapado del ambiente y colorizara todo. Lo demas era de un azul palido representante del frio indescriptible que habia. Sin embargo aunque la lluvia era salvaje la calmada chica esperaba bajo la lluvia. Su cabello reempapado. Escuchando el rio que caia de el techo de las casas y estructuras cercanas. Su mirada bajo su cabello brillante era decidida por algo.

Era como si estuviera decidida a morir bajo el frio de la lluvia en vez de ensuciarse con la resequedad de un refugio.

Community-based OT practice through the lens of UKZN.

Community practice opens doors for the profession of occupational therapy to grow and to apply occupation in its natural settings. Yet communities are complex and dynamic; addressing health issues in communities is complicated by factors such as reimbursement, community-defined needs and health disparities. The current healthcare systems lack the ability to adequately address community health issues, health disparities, health promotion and health behaviours, which lays the groundwork for occupational therapists to actively explore and define roles in community practice (Hocking, 2011).  Because of this the OTs have no recipe for success in this realm of practice, no standard time to perform activities of daily living treatment sessions. Therefore, we need to adopt a client-centred community approach that requires practitioners to have the skills to work effectively with individuals and groups and restore community interactions, as well as prevention and health maintenance programs that enhance function and well-being. To be the crème de le crème needed in community practice, one needs to have a journey with UKZN. Occupational Therapy is a hands-on profession that ensures professional-specific knowledge and skills are achieved (Ndaba et al., 2023). Hence, fieldwork commences in the first year to expose the students to a supervised fieldwork practical where they make contact with patients for the first time and get a general idea of what fieldwork entails. This is when students are exposed to different communities within KZN to learn about the programs that run in communities, the socio-economic status, and the quality of healthcare that affects the communities. The module is not OT-related as it doesn’t indicate the OT role. Specifically, this is a challenge with the OT curriculum because most students in their first year don’t understand the occupational therapist roles generally; therefore, understanding it within a community context during those times makes it even harder. Due to this, the fundamentals of being a community-based OT are lost. It was observed by Hammell (2015) that the most influential theories and models informing the international occupational therapy profession have been formulated by theorists who all reside in the Western/Northern world. These models include the PEO, KAWA, MOHO, etc., which are taught from the second year and are based on understanding our clients, making it easier to down our intervention.  The early introduction of these theories narrows our intervention to be client-specific, resulting in well-being for our client. The use of models such as the ecological system is introduced in the third year; however, due to limited exposure to communities, it is not used.

Though Western theories guide our profession, the presentation of the content and cases discussed on the theories are made to be South African suited; this is inspiring and promotes a vision and an aspiration towards a more culturally inclusive and globally relevant profession. It is a profession that addresses the occupational rights of diverse people in different communities, not solely those experiencing ill health in the privileged corners of the country. Even though, as students, we are taught this way, the assessment forms we used on our clients in communities are Westernised, making it challenging to assess them within that setting as most assessments are standardized. The curriculum of UKZN is structured in the sense that in the second and third years, each semester focuses on one component of an OT, whether psychosocial or physical (University of KwaZulu-Natal, 2024). This narrows the scope of OT within the communities to only viewing our clients using the medical model.  Being a community-based OT is not only practice-based but includes being able to advocate for clients, assessment skills, capacity-building skills and applying principles of occupation in a community context. Students are placed in an acute hospital or non-governmental organization setting during these times to foster learning (Naidoo et al., 2017). This limits students' ability to think critically when working in communities because they are exposed to seeing clients with particular presentations at a time.

In conclusion, the UKZN Occupational Therapy (OT) curriculum provides a robust foundation for preparing students to engage in community practice, emphasizing hands-on experience and early exposure to diverse communities. However, the complexity of community health, coupled with systemic health disparities and the reliance on Western theories and standardized assessments, poses significant challenges. While the curriculum's structure fosters a deep understanding of various OT components and client-centred care, it tends to limit the holistic, advocacy-based approach essential for effective community practice. To truly excel in community settings, students must navigate these complexities and develop a versatile skill set that extends beyond the traditional medical model, embracing cultural inclusivity and the unique dynamics of community health. This journey at UKZN, with its strengths and areas for growth, ultimately aims to equip future occupational therapists with the competence and adaptability needed to make a meaningful impact in diverse community contexts.

This morning I had to go shower at my parents again. When I came back I made corned beef hash and a fried a potato. Also had an applesauce. Being in the cold without easy access to hot water makes me appreciate a hot meal and also how hot my coffee is. I watched some Bojack in the morning. I doodled a little Venus stickman based on something I saw in Bojack. I tried hanging in David's server but once again I realized I just don't match their energy so I left. I realized I want to keep doing myself the kindness of not forcing myself to be around people I don't like. People shouldn't be a chore. Before lunch I streamed KSP for about an hour and a half and successfully made the plane I was trying to make. There were no chatters. For lunch I made a curry cup noodle and put some rice in it to help absorb the water which was great. Also had a granola bar and watched some Henry. After lunch I played more KSP and made a really big rocket to send a lander to Moho which worked out. After some more lolligagging and a tiny bit of work on my project, Daisy became free so we called and watched a Sonichu reading while I landed on Moho. Afterward we tried AI Dungeon and I had a good time trying something a little bit new. I always want to try new activities with Daisy but I can't always think of something. We had a good time and have something we will continue. In bed I played Kingdom Hearts for her. When she fell asleep I had to boil water for my dishes and the whole process took about 40 minutes. I'm really angry that my pipes are still frozen and all I can do is wait until maybe tomorrow, definitely Tuesday.

As usual I felt inspired to make something of my day at first but I didn't do as much as I wanted. I tried not to beat myself up about it though because I know I need honest to god rest and that work will get done in the coming week. So I didn't feel too terrible but I didn't feel very great either. I did a lot of noticing today about how I keep getting stuck in this same cycle. Obviously I need to try something different until I figure out what works instead of the same thing over and over.
