Week 7 The role of social media in COVIC-19 update (Malaysia)
The use of social media to provide Malaysians with the most up-to-date information about COVID-19 has shown to be effective. According to Datuk Seri Mohammad Mentek, secretary-general of the Communications and Multimedia Ministry (KKMM), there are roughly 28 million social media users in Malaysia as of January 2021. Indeed, it is thought that because to the current pandemic condition, which has prompted people to stay at home for the majority of the time since the adoption of the Movement Control Order (MCO), the number has climbed by two million or 7% in just a year from 2020. “The use of Internet has been on the rise since we face the MCO and the country’s social media users made up 86 per cent of the total population in January 2021,”
Could News be misleading?
The widespread use of social media also leads to misinformation and the widespread dissemination of fake news, which has caused concerns among governments around the world, notably in Southeast Asia. Disinformation and misinformation have been discovered on social media, causing public debate and, at times, unwarranted concern. After a video went viral on Facebook in Malaysia, medical professionals were concerned about misinformation stating that coronavirus might cause individuals to act like zombies.
Tumblr media
Malaysian authorities are collaborating with the media to offer credible information to the general public despite the lack of fact-checking groups. Government agencies, such as the Malaysian Media and Communication Council's Sebenarnya.my website, provide as a one-stop shop for cross-checking material that has gone popular on social media. Medical hoaxes have certainly become easier to spread thanks to social media, which has been exacerbated by the public's lack of awareness of the unusual infection. Click-bait headlines from irresponsible media outlets add fuel to the flames of fake news in Southeast Asia, amplifying the spread of misinformation about the latest virus outbreak.
Citizens should constantly double-check their sources of information, conduct a Google search on the subject, and combine data from multiple sources. When many people first received the immunisation, a new trend began online, with people sharing photographs of the vaccine being administered or social media users displaying confirmation of a vaccination card. In this social media era, especially in these challenging times, those instances are a good way to convey optimistic thoughts.
Roles of Public Health Authorities
During a pandemic, it is critical for health authorities to manage information and maintain public faith. To allow for more effective distribution of vital information to the public, health authorities should pay close attention to the utilisation of appropriate media channels and sources. Malaysians typically obtain information on COVID-19 through television and internet news sites. Malaysians' primary source of COVID-19 information, as well as the most direct news medium, was the Malaysian Ministry of Health. Old information must be replaced with fresh information, inaccurate data must be addressed, and public statements and instructions must be sent as soon as possible. As new scientific discoveries are made and new information becomes available, the government and relevant authorities must be able to react quickly.
Tumblr media
Therefore, Malaysians also must be equipped with accurate and timely information to keep abreast of COVID-19 news and the appropriate preventive strategies. Social Media is a very good platform channel in combating the pandemic but Malaysian must be equipped with higher level of self -efficacy ensuring their own full knowledge of the accurate news .

Opposition leader wants new Esscom D-G
By Sandra Sokial
KOTA KINABALU, April 16:
An Opposition leader believes appointing at least a two-star general will provide better control of the Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom).
As such, Sabah’s Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) chief Datuk Seri Lajim Ukin, has proposed for the replacement of current Esscom director-general Datuk Mohammad Mentek soon.
He described Mohammad Mentek as lacking experiences to give orders during any security crisis similar to the Sulu intrusion, in Tanduo, Lahad Datu.
“I am very proud that a Sabahan is given a role in Esscom but in my opinion he is not qualified, and cannot give orders to two generals under Esscom because he does not have enough experiences and training,” said Lajim.
He stressed that the role of a director-general must be given to someone in uniform (in security forces) or at least with a two-star rank so that complete orders can be given if a similar incident like Tanduo intrusion recurs.
“The Government needs to replace him with someone with better qualification and experience in handling crisis in security matters,” he concluded.

Report suspicious characters in Semporna, says Esscom DG
By Sandra Sokial
KOTA KINABALU, April 11:
Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) is seeking help from the grassroots to report on any suspicious characters in their villages.
Its Director-General Datuk Mohammad Mentek also urged village heads as well as the Village Development and Security Committees (JKKK) to play their role, especially where security was concerned.
“If you spot suspicious characters or illegal immigrants in your village, report them to the police or authorities immediately.
“We do not want anyone to be traitors, covering or harbouring the illegal immigrants as they may be dangerous or have previous convictions.”
Mohammad said Esscom’s priority was to “clean up” areas under its jurisdiction of illegal immigrants, especially Semporna following the recent kidnapping case.
He said since Nov 24 last year, they had rounded up a total of 852 illegal immigrants under the “Op Gasak” operations carried out within the Esscom area.
In the latest “Op Gasak 6″, which was carried out at Kampung Labuan Haji Pulau Bum-Bum, they nabbed 527 people, of which 287 are women.
All were referred to the Immigration Department for screening. Of the figure, two men tested positive for drugs.
“We will continue to carry out operation to rid illegal immigrants of Esscom areas.
“At the same time, stern warning is issued to employers to stop taking people with no valid travel documents to work for them, or risk being charged in court.”
